In this series of two articles, we prove that every action of a finite group $G$ on a finite and contractible $2$-complex has a fixed point. The proof goes by constructing a nontrivial representation of the fundamental group of each of the acyclic $2$-dimensional $G$-complexes constructed by Oliver and Segev. In the first part we develop the necessary theory and cover the cases where $G=\mathrm{PSL}_2(2^n)$, $G=\mathrm{PSL}_2(q)$ with $q\equiv 3\pmod 8$ or $G=\mathrm{Sz}(2^n)$. The cases $G=\mathrm{PSL}_2(q)$ with $q\equiv 5\pmod 8$ are addressed in the second part.
Let $X$ be a contractible $2$-complex which is a union of two contractible subcomplexes $Y$ and $Z.$ Is the intersection $Y\cap Z$ contractible as well? In this note, we prove that the inclusion-induced map $π_{1}(Y\cap Z)\rightarrow π_{1}(Z)$ is injective if $Y$ is $π_{1}$-injective subcomplex in a locally CAT(0) 2-complex $X$. In particular, each component in the intersection of two contractible subcomplexes in a CAT(0) 2-complex is contractible.
Given a group $G$, its lattice of subgroups $\mathcal{L}(G)$ can be viewed as a simplicial complex in a natural way. The inclusion of $1_G, G \in \mathcal{L}(G)$ implies that $\mathcal{L}(G)$ is contractible, and so we study the topology of the order complex $\widehat{\mathcal{L}(G)} := \mathcal{L}(G) \setminus \{1_G,G\}$. In this short note we consider the homotopy type of $\widehat{\mathcal{L}(G)}$ where $G \cong PGL_2(p^{2^n})$, $p \geq 3$, $n \geq 1$ and show that $\widehat{\mathcal{L}(G)}$ is contractible. This is consistent with a conjecture of Shareshian on the homotopy type of order co…
There are known infinite families of Brieskorn homology 3-spheres which can be realized as boundaries of smooth contractible 4-manifolds. In this paper we show that free periodic actions on these Brieskorn spheres do not extend smoothly over a contractible 4-manifold. We give a new infinite family of examples in which the actions extend locally linearly but not smoothly.
We study chain complexes of field configurations and observables for Abelian gauge theory on contractible manifolds, and show that they can be extended to non-contractible manifolds by using techniques from homotopy theory. The extension prescription yields functors from a category of manifolds to suitable categories of chain complexes. The extended functors properly describe the global field and observable content of Abelian gauge theory, while the original gauge field configurations and observables on contractible manifolds are recovered up to a natural weak equivalence.
Let $G$ be a finite group and $\mathcal{A}_p(G)$ be the poset of nontrivial elementary abelian $p$-subgroups of $G$. Quillen conjectured that $O_p(G)$ is nontrivial if $\mathcal{A}_p(G)$ is contractible. We prove that $O_p(G)\neq 1$ for any group $G$ admitting a $G$-invariant acyclic $p$-subgroup complex of dimension $2$. In particular, it follows that Quillen's conjecture holds for groups of $p$-rank $3$. We also apply this result to establish Quillen's conjecture for some particular groups not considered in the seminal work of Aschbacher--Smith.
The problem of equivariant rigidity is the $Γ$-homeomorphism classification of $Γ$-actions on manifolds with compact quotient and with contractible fixed sets for all finite subgroups of $Γ$. In other words, this is the classification of cocompact $E_{fin}Γ$-manifolds. We use surgery theory, algebraic $K$-theory, and the Farrell--Jones Conjecture to give this classification for a family of groups which satisfy the property that the normalizers of nontrivial finite subgroups are themselves finite. More generally, we study cocompact proper actions of these groups on contractible manifolds and pr…
Smith theory says that the fixed point of a semi-free action of a group $G$ on a contractible space is ${\bb Z}_p$-acyclic for any prime factor $p$ of $G$. Jones proved the converse of Smith theory for the case $G$ is a cyclic group acting on finite CW-complexes. We extend the theory to semi-free group action on finite CW-complexes of given homotopy type, in various settings. In particular, the converse of Smith theory holds if and only if certain $K$-theoretical obstruction vanishes. We also give some examples that show the effects of different types of the $K$-theoretical obstruction.
Let R be a strongly Z-graded ring with degree-0 subring S, and let C be a chain complex of modules over the subring P of elements of non-negative degree. We show that there are non-commutative localisations of P which detect whether the complex C is S-finitely dominated or S-contractible, respectively, and that these localisations are universal among P-rings making S-finitely dominated and S-contractible complexes contractible. This generalises known results for polynomial rings to a much wider class of rings. We show by example that in general C need not be P-homotopy finite even if C is S-fi…
We formalize an equivariant version of Bestvina-Brady discrete Morse theory, and apply it to Vietoris-Rips complexes in order to exhibit finite universal spaces for proper actions for all asymptotically CAT(0) groups.
In this paper, we describe the homotopy type of the homotopy fixed point sets of $S^3$-actions on rational spheres and complex projective spaces, and provide some properties of $S^1$-actions on a general rational complex.
Given any modular category $\mathcal{C}$ over an algebraically closed field $k$, we extract a sequence $(M_g)_{g\geq 0}$ of $\mathcal{C}$-bimodules. We show that the Hochschild chain complex $CH(\mathcal{C};M_g)$ of $\mathcal{C}$ with coefficients in $M_g$ carries a canonical homotopy coherent projective action of the mapping class group of the surface of genus $g+1$. The ordinary Hochschild complex of $\mathcal{C}$ corresponds to $CH(\mathcal{C};M_0)$. This result is obtained as part of the following more comprehensive topological structure: We construct a symmetric monoidal functor $\mathfra…
If P is a dg-operad acting on a dg-algebra A via algebra homomorphisms, then P acts on the Hochschild complex of A. In the more general case when P is a dg-prop, we show that P still acts on the Hochschild complex, but only up to coherent homotopy. We moreover give a functorial dg-replacement of P that strictifies the action. As an application, we obtain an explicit strictification of the homotopy coherent commutative Hopf algebra structure on the Hochschild complex of a commutative Hopf algebra.
We explain our previous results about Hochschild actions [Kau07a, Kau08a] pertaining in particular to the coproduct which appeared in a different form in [GH09] and provide a fresh look at the results. We recall the general action, specialize to the aforementioned coproduct and prove that the assumption of commutativity, made for convenience in [Kau08a], is not needed. We give detailed background material on loop spaces, Hochschild complexes and dualizations, and discuss details and extensions of these techniques which work for all operations of [Kau07a, Kau08a]. With respect to loop spaces, w…
