We probe the formation scenarios and the active galactic nuclei (AGN) occupation fraction of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the nearby Coma cluster by utilizing XMM-Newton observations of 779 out of 854 UDG candidates identified by Subaru survey. Their origin is probed by measuring the dark matter halo mass of the stacked sample of UDGs and the population of low-mass X-ray binaries residing in globular clusters. Our measurements suggest that the average UDG population does not have a substantial amount of hot gas or a large number of globular clusters. This supports the formation scenario, in which UDGs are puffed-up dwarf galaxies, agreeing with that obtained for 404 Coma cluster UDGs using Chandra. We also determine AGN occupation fraction of UDGs by cross-correlating the position of UDGs with the detected point sources in Coma. We detect three X-ray sources with detection significance $σ\geq 5$ that could be off-centre AGN within 5 arcsec from the centre of the UDG 317, UDG 432, and UDG 535. We identify an optical counterpart for the X-ray source associated with the UDG 317, suggesting that this source is more likely an off-centre AGN. Based on the current data, however, we cannot conclusively constrain whether the detected AGN is residing in the Coma cluster or not.
We demonstrate a novel technique for calibrating the energy scale of the XMM EPIC-pn detector, which allows us to measure bulk flows in the intracluster medium (ICM) of the Perseus and Coma clusters. The procedure uses the instrumental lines present in all observations, in particular, Cu-Ka. By studying their spatial and temporal variations, in addition to incorporating calibration observations, we refined the absolute energy scale to better than 150 km/s at the Fe-K line, a large improvement over the nominal accuracy of 550 km/s. We then mapped the bulk motions over much of the central 1200 a…
The Supermodel provides an accurate description of the thermal contribution by the hot intracluster plasma which is crucial for the analysis of the hard excess. In this paper the thermal emissivity in the Coma cluster is derived starting from the intracluster gas temperature and density profiles obtained by the Supermodel analysis of X-ray observables: the XMM-Newton temperature profile and the Rosat brightness distribution. The Supermodel analysis of the BeppoSAX/PDS hard X-ray spectrum confirms our previous results, namely an excess at the c.l. of ~4.8sigma and a nonthermal flux of 1.30+-0.4…
Large values for the mass-to-light ratio (") in self-gravitating systems is one of the most important evidences of dark matter. We propose a expression for the mass-to-light ratio in spherical systems using MOND. Results for the COMA cluster reveal that a modification of the gravity, as proposed by MOND, can reduce significantly this value.
We report the spectroscopic confirmation of a new protocluster in the COSMOS field at $z$ $\sim$ 2.2, COSMOS Cluster 2.2 (CC2.2), originally identified as an overdensity of narrowband selected H$α$ emitting candidates. With only two masks of Keck/MOSFIRE near-IR spectroscopy in both $H$ ($\sim$ 1.47-1.81 $μ$m) and $K$ ($\sim$ 1.92-2.40 $μ$m) bands ($\sim$ 1.5 hour each), we confirm 35 unique protocluster members with at least two emission lines detected with S/N $>$ 3. Combined with 12 extra members from the zCOSMOS-deep spectroscopic survey (47 in total), we estimate a mean redshift and a lin…

We study a merger of the NGC 4839 group with the Coma cluster using X-ray observations from the XMM-Newton and Chandra telescopes. X-ray data show two prominent features: (i) a long (~600 kpc in projection) and bent tail of cool gas trailing (towards south-west) the optical center of NGC 4839, and ii) a "sheath" region of enhanced X-ray surface brightness enveloping the group, which is due to hotter gas. While at first glance the X-ray images suggest that we are witnessing the first infall of NGC 4839 into the Coma cluster core, we argue that a post-merger scenario provides a better explanatio…
After thirty years of the discovery of the fundamental plane, explanations to the tilt of the fundamental plane with respect to the virial plane still suffer from the need of fine-tuning. In this paper, we try to explore the origin of this tilt from the perspective of modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) by applying the 16 Coma galaxies available in Thomas et al.[1]. Based on the mass models that can reproduce de Vaucouleurs' law closely, we find that the tilt of the traditional fundamental plane is naturally explained by the simple form of the MONDian interpolating function, if we assume a well…
Context. Galaxy clusters are continuously growing through the accretion of matter in their outskirts. This process induces inhomogeneities in the gas density distribution (clumping) which need to be taken into account to recover the physical properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) at large radii. Aims. We studied the thermodynamic properties in the outskirts (R > R500) of the massive galaxy cluster Abell 2142 by combining the Sunyaev Zel'dovich (SZ) effect with the X-ray signal. Methods. We combined the SZ pressure profile measured by Planck with the XMM-Newton gas density profile to recov…
We have analyzed all available archival XMM-Newton observations of X Comae, a bright X-ray quasar behind the Coma cluster, to study the properties of the warm-hot intergalactic medium in the vicinity of the nearest massive galaxy cluster. The RGS observations confirm the possible presence of a Ne IX K-alpha absorption line at the redshift of Coma, although with a limited statistical significance. This analysis is therefore in line with the earlier analysis by Takei et al. (2007) based on a sub-set of these data. Its large column density and optical depth, however, point to implausible conditio…
The spatial and kinematic distribution of warm gas in and around the Coma Cluster is presented through observations of Lyman-alpha absorbers using background QSOs. Updates to the Lyman-alpha absorber distribution found in Yoon et al. (2012) for the Virgo Cluster are also presented. At 0.2-2.0 R_vir of Coma we identify 14 Lyman-alpha absorbers (N_HI = 10^{12.8-15.9} cm^-2) towards 5 sightlines and no Lyman-alpha absorbers along 3 sightlines within 3\sigmav_coma. For both Coma and Virgo, most Lyman-alpha absorbers are found outside the virial radius or beyond 1\sigmav consistent with them largel…
Using Suzaku data, we had found a $3.4σ$ evidence for the X-ray emitting warm-hot circumgalactic medium (CGM) in the L$^\star$ galaxy NGC 3221. Here we present XMM-Newton data and outline an efficient, rigorous and well-defined method to extract the faint CGM signal. We confirm the CGM detection at $4σ$ significance within 30-200 kpc of the galaxy. We claim with $99.62\%$ confidence that the CGM is extended beyond $150$ kpc. The average temperature of the CGM is 2.0$^{+0.2}_{-0.3} \times 10^6$ K, but it is not isothermal. We find suggestive evidence for a declining temperature gradient out to …
Many ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) have been discovered in the Coma cluster, and there is evidence that some, notably Dragonfly 44, have Milky Way-like dynamical masses despite dwarf-like stellar masses. We used X-ray, UV, and optical data to investigate the star formation and nuclear activity in the Coma UDGs, and we obtained deep UV and X-ray data (Swift and XMM-Newton) for Dragonfly 44 to search for low-level star formation, hot circumgalactic gas, and the integrated emission from X-ray binaries. Among the Coma UDGs, we find UV luminosities consistent with quiescence but NUV$-r$ colors indi…
We use deep high resolution \textit{HST/ACS} imaging of two fields in the core of the Coma cluster to investigate the occurrence of nuclear star clusters (NSCs) in quiescent dwarf galaxies as faint as $M_{I} = -10$ mag. We employ a hierarchical Bayesian logistic regression framework to model the faint end of the nucleation fraction ($f_{n}$) as a function of both galaxy luminosity and environment. We find that $f_n$ is remarkably high in Coma: at $M_{I} \approx -13$ mag half of the cluster dwarfs still host prominent NSCs. Comparison with dwarf systems in nearby clusters and groups shows that,…
We describe a far infrared survey of the Coma cluster and the galaxy filament it resides within. Our survey covers an area of $\sim$150 deg$^2$ observed by $Herschel$ H-ATLAS in five bands at 100, 160, 250, 350 and 500$μ$m. The SDSS spectroscopic survey ($m_{r} \le 17.8)$ is used to define an area (within the Virial radius) and redshift selected ($4268 < v < 9700$ km s$^{-1}$) sample of 744 Coma cluster galaxies - the Coma Cluster Catalogue (CCC). For comparison we also define a sample of 951 galaxies in the connecting filament - the Coma Filament Catalogue (CFC). The optical positions and par…
We present a deep XMM-Newton observation of the extremely massive, rapidly rotating, relativistic-jet-launching spiral galaxy 2MASX J23453268-0449256. Diffuse X-ray emission from the hot gaseous halo around the galaxy is robustly detected out to a radius of 160 kpc, corresponding roughly to 35 per cent of the virial radius ($\approx 450$ kpc). We fit the X-ray emission with the standard isothermal $β$ model, and it is found that the enclosed gas mass within 160 kpc is $1.15_{-0.24}^{+0.22} \times 10^{11} \, \rm{M}_{\odot}$. Extrapolating the gas mass profile out to the virial radius, the estim…
We present analysis of the far ultraviolet (FUV) emission of sources in the central region of the Coma cluster (z=0.023) using the data taken by the UVIT aboard the multi-wavelength satellite mission AstroSat. We find a good correlation between the UVIT FUV flux and the fluxes in both wavebands of the Galex mission, for the common sources. We detect stars and galaxies, amongst which the brightest (r <= 17 mag) galaxies in the field of view are mostly members of the Coma cluster. We also detect three quasars (z = 0.38, 0.51, 2.31), one of which is likely the farthest object observed by the UVIT…
We use data from the HST Coma Cluster Treasury program to assess the richness of the Globular Cluster Systems (GCSs) of 54 Coma ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs), 18 of which have a half-light radius exceeding 1.5 kpc. We use a hierarchical Bayesian method tested on a large number of mock datasets to account consistently for the high and spatially varying background counts in Coma. These include both background galaxies and intra-cluster GCs (ICGCs), which are disentangled from the population of member GCs in a probabilistic fashion. We find no candidate for a GCS as rich as that of the Milky Way,…
We present Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations of the Abell 3391/Abell 3395 intercluster filament. It has been suggested that the galaxy clusters Abell 3395, Abell 3391, and the galaxy group ESO-161 located between the two clusters, are in alignment along a large-scale intercluster filament. We find that the filament is aligned close to the plane of the sky, in contrast to previous results. We find a global projected filament temperature kT = $4.45_{-0.55}^{+0.89}$~keV, electron density $n_e=1.08^{+0.06}_{-0.05} \times 10^{-4}$~cm$^{-3}$, and $M_{\rm gas} = 2.7^{+0.2}_{-0.1} \times 10^{1…

We study a sample of 148 early-type galaxies in the Coma cluster using SDSS photometry and spectra, and calibrate our results using detailed dynamical models for a subset of these galaxies, to create a precise benchmark for dynamical scaling relations in high-density environments. For these galaxies, we successfully measured global galaxy properties, modeled stellar populations, and created dynamical models, and support the results using detailed dynamical models of 16 galaxies, including the two most massive cluster galaxies, using data taken with the SAURON IFU. By design, the study provides…
(Abridged) We explore the massive cluster XMMXCSJ2215.9-1738 at z~1.5 with KMOS spectroscopy of Halpha and [NII] covering a region that corresponds to about one virial radius. Using published spectroscopic redshifts of 108 galaxies in and around the cluster we computed the location of galaxies in the projected velocity vs. position phase-space to separate our cluster sample into a virialized region of objects accreted longer ago (roughly inside half R200) and a region of infalling galaxies. We measured oxygen abundances for ten cluster galaxies with detected [NII] lines in the individual galax…
X-ray emitting gaseous coronae around massive galaxies are a basic prediction of galaxy formation models. Although the coronae around spiral galaxies offer a fundamental test of these models, observational constraints on their characteristics are still scarce. While the presence of extended hot coronae has been established around a handful of massive spiral galaxies, the short X-ray observations only allowed for measurements of the basic characteristics of the coronae. In this work, we utilize deep XMM-Newton observations of NGC 6753 to explore its extended X-ray corona in unprecedented detail…
We explore the variation in stellar population ages for Coma cluster galaxies as a function of projected cluster-centric distance, using a sample of 362 red-sequence galaxies with high signal-to-noise spectroscopy. The sample spans a wide range in luminosity (0.02-4 L*) and extends from the cluster core to near the virial radius. We find a clear distinction in the observed trends of the giant and dwarf galaxies. The ages of red-sequence giants are primarily determined by galaxy mass, with only weak modulation by environment, in the sense that galaxies at larger cluster-centric distance are sli…
The nearby group centered on its bright central galaxy NGC 1407 has been suggested to be an unusually dark system from previous kinematic studies. It is also known for hosting a bright galaxy, NGC 1400, with a large radial velocity (1200 km s$^{-1}$) with respect to the group center. Previous ROSAT X-ray observations revealed an extended region of enhanced surface brightness just eastward of NGC 1400. We investigate the NGC 1407/1400 complex with XMM-Newton and Chandra observations. We find that the temperature and metallicity of the enhanced region are different (cooler and more metal rich) t…

We examine 11 XMM-Newton observations of the giant spiral galaxy NGC 1961, allowing us to study the hot gaseous halo of a spiral galaxy in unprecedented detail. We perform a spatial and a spectral analysis; with the former, the hot halo is detected to at least 80 kpc and with the latter its properties can be measured in detail up to 42 kpc. We find evidence for a negative gradient in the temperature profile as is common for elliptical galaxies. We measure a rough metallicity profile, which is consistent with being flat at $Z \sim 0.2 Z_{\odot}$. Converting to this metallicity, the deprojected …
Star clusters are ideal platforms for categorising X-ray emitting stars and to study X-ray emission as a function of stellar age and activity. We present a comprehensive study of an open star cluster, NGC2527, by combining data from XMM-UVOT-Gaia. Cluster membership of stars and their photometry are taken from Gaia and cross-matched with XMM and UVOT detections. We estimate the age of NGC2527 as ~630 Myr, reddening as E(B-V)=0.13 mag, and a distance of 642+/-30 pc using PARSEC isochrones. We detect 5 sub-subgiants and 5 bandgap stars, which defy single star evolution. We estimate the temperatu…
In order to connect galaxy clusters to their progenitor protoclusters, we must constrain the star formation histories within their member galaxies and the timescale of virial collapse. In this paper we characterize the complex star-forming properties of a $z=2.5$ protocluster in the COSMOS field using ALMA dust continuum and new VLA CO(1-0) observations of two filaments associated with the structure, sometimes referred to as the "Hyperion" protocluster. We focus in particular on the protocluster "core" which has previously been suggested as the highest redshift bona fide galaxy cluster traced …
We investigate the distribution and velocity field of galaxies situated in a band of 100 by 20 degrees centered on M87 and oriented along the Local supercluster plane. Our sample amounts 2158 galaxies with radial velocities less than 2000 km/s. Of them, 1119 galaxies (52%) have distance and peculiar velocity estimates. About 3/4 of early-type galaxies are concentrated within the Virgo cluster core, most of the late-type galaxies in the band locate outside the virial radius. Distribution of gas-rich dwarfs with $M_{\rm H\,I} > M_*$ looks to be insensitive to the Virgo cluster presence. Among 50…
We analyze the 3D morphology and kinematics of 13 open clusters (OCs) located within 500 pc of the Sun, using Gaia EDR3 and kinematic data from literature. Members of OCs are identified using the unsupervised machine learning method StarGO, using 5D parameters (X, Y, Z, $μ_α\cosδ, μ_δ$). The OC sample covers an age range of 25Myr--2.65Gyr. We correct the asymmetric distance distribution due to the parallax error using Bayesian inversion. The uncertainty in the corrected distance for a cluster at 500~pc is 3.0--6.3~pc, depending on the intrinsic spatial distribution of its members. We determine…
Galaxy groups and clusters are the main tools used to test cosmological models and to study the environmental effect of galaxy formation. This work provides a catalogue of galaxy groups and clusters, as well as potentially merging systems based on the SDSS main galaxy survey. We identified galaxy groups and clusters using the modified friends-of-friends (FoF) group finder designed specifically for flux-limited galaxy surveys. The FoF group membership is refined by multimodality analysis to find subgroups and by using the group virial radius and escape velocity to expose unbound galaxies. We lo…

Supermassive black holes (BHs) residing in the brightest cluster galaxies are over-massive relative to the stellar bulge mass or central stellar velocity dispersion of their host galaxies. As BHs residing at the bottom of the galaxy cluster's potential well may undergo physical processes that are driven by the large-scale characteristics of the galaxy clusters, it is possible that the growth of these BHs is (indirectly) governed by the properties of their host clusters. In this work, we explore the connection between the mass of BHs residing in the brightest group/cluster galaxies (BGGs/BCGs) …
Population studies of the extragalactic objects are a major part of the universe large-scale structure study. Apart from radio, infrared, and visible wavelength bands, observations and further identification of extragalactic objects such as galaxies, quasars, blazers, liners, and active star burst regions are also conducted in the X-ray and gamma bands. In this paper we make identification and cross-correlate of the infrared and X-ray observational data, build a distribution of a selected sample sources by types and attempted to analyze types of the extragalactic objects at distances up to z =…
The M49 group, resident outside the virial radius of the Virgo cluster, is falling onto the cluster from the south. We report results from deep {\sl XMM-Newton} mosaic observations of M49. Its hot gas temperature is 0.8\,keV at the group center and rises to 1.5\,keV beyond the brightest group galaxy (BGG). The group gas extends to radii of $\sim300$\,kpc to the north and south. The observations reveal a cold front $\sim20$\,kpc north of the BGG center and an X-ray bright stripped tail 70\,kpc long and 10\,kpc wide to the southwest of the BGG. We argue that the atmosphere of the infalling group…
We present an analysis of archival {\it HST/ACS} imaging in the F475W ($g_{475}$), F606W ($V_{606}$) and F814W ($I_{814}$) bands of the globular cluster (GC) system of a large (3.4 kpc effective radius) ultra-diffuse galaxy (DF17) believed located in the Coma Cluster of galaxies. We detect 11 GCs down to the 5$σ$ completeness limit of the imaging ($I_{814}=$27 mag). Correcting for background and our detection limits yields a total population of GCs in this galaxy of $27\pm5$ and a $V$-band specific frequency, $S_N=28\pm5$. Based on comparisons to the GC systems of Local galaxies, we show that …

Galaxy clusters are the most massive virialized structures in the Universe and are formed through the gravitational accretion of matter over cosmic time. The discovery of an evolved galaxy cluster at redshift z=2, corresponding to a look-back time of 10.4 billion years, provides an opportunity to study its properties. The galaxy cluster XLSSC 122 was originally detected as a faint, extended X-ray source in the XMM Large Scale Structure survey and was revealed to be coincident with a compact over-density of galaxies with photometric redshifts of 1.9 +/- 0.2. Subsequent observations at millimetr…
We use the GALEX data of the GUViCS survey to construct the NUV luminosity function of the Virgo cluster over ~ 300 deg.2, an area covering the cluster and its surrounding regions up to ~ 1.8 virial radii. The NUV luminosity function is also determined for galaxies of different morphological type and NUV-i colour, and for the different substructures within the cluster. These luminosity functions are robust vs. statistical corrections since based on a sample of 833 galaxies mainly identified as cluster members with spectroscopic redshift (808) or high-quality optical scaling relations (10). We …
The virial masses of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) have been estimated using the kinematics and abundance of their globular cluster populations, leading to disparate results. Some studies conclude that UDGs reside in massive dark matter halos while others, controversially, argue for the existence of UDGs with no dark matter at all. Here we show that these results arise because the uncertainties of these mass estimates have been substantially underestimated. Indeed, applying the same procedure to the well-studied Fornax dwarf spheroidal would conclude that it has an "overmassive" dark halo or, …
Using data from the ALFALFA Arecibo HI survey of galaxies and the Virgo cluster X-ray pressure profiles from XMM-Newton, we investigate the possibility that starless dark HI clumps, also known as "dark galaxies", are supported by external pressure in the surrounding intercluster medium. We find that the starless HI clump masses, velocity dispersions and positions allow these clumps to be in pressure equilibrium with the X-ray gas near the virial radius of the Virgo cluster. We predict the sizes of these clumps to range from 1-10 kpc, in agreement with the range of sizes found for spatially res…
Structure formation in the current Universe operates through the accretion of group-scale systems onto massive clusters. The detection and study of such accreting systems is crucial to understand the build-up of the most massive virialized structures we see today. We report the discovery with XMM-Newton of an irregular X-ray substructure in the outskirts of the massive galaxy cluster Abell 2142. The tip of the X-ray emission coincides with a concentration of galaxies. The bulk of the X-ray emission of this substructure appears to be lagging behind the galaxies and extends over a projected scal…
We present the analysis of the XMM-Newton data of the Circum-Galactic Medium of MASsive Spirals (CGM-MASS) sample of six extremely massive spiral galaxies in the local Universe. All the CGM-MASS galaxies have diffuse X-ray emission from hot gas detected above the background extending $\sim(30-100)\rm~kpc$ from the galactic center. This doubles the existing detection of such extended hot CGM around massive spiral galaxies. The radial soft X-ray intensity profile of hot gas can be fitted with a $β$-function with the slope typically in the range of $β=0.35-0.55$. This range, as well as those $β$ …
We report the discovery of three large (R29 >~ 1 arcminute) extremely low surface brightness (mu_(V,0) ~ 27.0) galaxies identified using our deep, wide-field imaging of the Virgo Cluster from the Burrell Schmidt telescope. Complementary data from the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey do not resolve red giant branch stars in these objects down to i=24, yielding a lower distance limit of 2.5 Mpc. At the Virgo distance, these objects have half-light radii 3-10 kpc and luminosities L_V=2-9x10^7 Lsun. These galaxies are comparable in size but lower in surface brightness than the large ultradiffu…
