Understanding non-Fermi liquids in dimensions higher than one, has been a subject of great interest. Such phases may serve as parent states for other unconventional phases of quantum matter, in a similar manner that conventional broken symmetry states can be understood as instabilities of the Fermi liquid. In this work, we investigate the emergence of a novel non-Fermi liquid in two dimensions, where the fermions with quadratic band-touching dispersion interact with the Bose metal. The bosonic excitations in the Bose metal possess an extended nodal-line spectrum in momentum space, which arises due to the subsystem symmetry or the restricted motion of bosons. Using renormalization group analysis and direct computations, we show that the extended infrared (IR) singularity of the Bose metal leads to a line of interacting fixed points of novel non-Fermi liquids, where the anomalous dimension of the fermions varies continuously, akin to the Luttinger liquid in one dimension. Further, the generalization of the model with multiple low-energy excitations is used to explore other unusual features of the resulting ground state.
In this work, we introduce a new type of topological order which is protected by subsystem symmetries which act on lower dimensional subsets of lattice many-body system, e.g. along lines or planes in a three dimensional system. The symmetry groups for such systems exhibit a macroscopic number of generators in the infinite volume limit. We construct a set of exactly solvable models in $2d$ and $3d$ which exhibit such subsystem SPT (SSPT) phases with one dimensional subsystem symmetries. These phases exhibit analogs of phenomena seen in SPTs protected by global symmetries: gapless edge modes, pr…
We consider symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in 2D protected by linear subsystem symmetries, i.e. those that act along rigid lines. There is a distinction between a "strong" subsystem SPT phase, and a "weak" one, which is composed of decoupled 1D SPTs with global symmetries. We propose a natural definition for strong equivalence of such phases, in terms of a linearly-symmetric local unitary transformation, under which a weak subsystem SPT is equivalent to the trivial phase. This leads to a number of distinct equivalence classes of strong subsystem SPTs, which we show are in one-to-o…
We study symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases of matter in 2D protected by symmetries acting on fractal subsystems of a certain type. Despite the total symmetry group of such systems being subextensively large, we show that only a small number of phases are actually realizable by local Hamiltonians. Which phases are possible depends crucially on the spatial structure of the symmetries, and we show that in many cases no non-trivial SPT phases are possible at all. In cases where non-trivial SPT phases do exist, we give an exhaustive enumeration of them in terms of their locality.
We classify subsystem symmetry-protected topological (SSPT) phases in $3+1$D protected by planar subsystem symmetries, which are dual to abelian fracton topological orders. We distinguish between weak SSPTs, which can be constructed by stacking $2+1$D SPTs, and strong SSPTs, which cannot. We identify signatures of strong phases, and show by explicit construction that such phases exist. A classification of strong phases is presented for an arbitrary finite abelian group. Finally, we show that fracton orders realizable via $p$-string condensation are dual to weak SSPTs, while strong SSPTs do not…
Subsystem symmetry protected topological (SSPT) order is a type of quantum order that is protected by symmetries acting on lower-dimensional subsystems of the entire system. In this paper, we show how SSPT order can be characterized and detected by a constant correction to the entanglement area law, similar to the topological entanglement entropy. Focusing on the paradigmatic two-dimensional cluster phase as an example, we use tensor network methods to give an analytic argument that almost all states in the phase exhibit the same correction to the area law, such that this correction may be use…
We study a mechanism whereby quantum information present in the initial state of a quantum many-body system can be protected for arbitrary times due to a combination of symmetry and spatial locality. Remarkably, the mechanism is sufficiently generic that the dynamics can be fully ergodic upon resolving the protecting symmetry and fixing the encoded quantum state, resulting in an infinite-temperature quantum memory. After exemplifying the mechanism in a strongly nonintegrable two-dimensional (2D) spin model inspired by the surface code, we find it has a natural interpretation in the language of…
We employ strange correlators to detect 2D subsystem symmetry-protected topological (SSPT) phases which are nontrivial topological phases protected by subsystem symmetries. Specifically, we analytically construct efficient strange correlators in the 2D cluster model in the presence of a uniform magnetic field and then perform the projector Quantum Monte Carlo simulation within the quantum annealing scheme. We find that strange correlators show the long-range correlation in the SSPT phase, from which we define strange order parameters to characterize the topological phase transition between the…

We reexamine the one-dimensional spin-1 $XXZ$ model with on-site uniaxial single-ion anisotropy as to the appearance and characterization of the symmetry-protected topological Haldane phase. By means of large-scale density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations the central charge can be determined numerically via the von Neumann entropy, from which the ground-sate phase diagram of the model can be derived with high precision. The nontrivial gapped Haldane phase shows up in between the trivial gapped even Haldane and N{é}el phases, appearing at large single-ion and spin--exchange inte…
We show that 2D fractal subsystem symmetry-protected topological phases may serve as resources for universal measurement-based quantum computation. This is demonstrated explicitly for two cluster models known to lie within fractal symmetry-protected topological phases, and computational universality is shown to persist throughout those phases. One of the models considered is simply the cluster model on the honeycomb lattice in one limit. We discuss the importance of rigid subsystem symmetries, as opposed to global or $(\text{D}-1)$-form symmetries, in this context.
We introduce the subsystem symmetry-preserving real-space entanglement renormalization group and apply it to study bifurcating flows generated by linear and fractal subsystem symmetry-protected topological phases in two spatial dimensions. We classify all bifurcating fixed points that are given by subsystem symmetric cluster states with two qubits per unit cell. In particular, we find that the square lattice cluster state is a quotient-bifurcating fixed point, while the cluster states derived from Yoshida's first order fractal spin liquid models are self-bifurcating fixed points. We discuss th…
We show the violation of the entanglement-area law for bosonic systems with Bose surfaces. For bosonic systems with gapless factorized energy dispersions on a N^d Cartesian lattice in d-dimension, e.g., the exciton Bose liquid in two dimension, we explicitly show that a belt subsystem with width L preserving translational symmetry along d-1 Cartesian axes has leading entanglement entropy (N^{d-1}/3)ln L. Using this result, the strong subadditivity inequality, and lattice symmetries, we bound the entanglement entropy of a rectangular subsystem from below and above showing a logarithmic violatio…
What kinds of symmetry-protected topologically ordered (SPTO) ground states can be used for universal measurement-based quantum computation in a similar fashion to the 2D cluster state? 2D SPTO states are classified not only by global on-site symmetries but also by subsystem symmetries, which are fine-grained symmetries dependent on the lattice geometry. Recently, all states within so-called SPTO cluster phases on the square and hexagonal lattices have been shown to be universal, based on the presence of subsystem symmetries and associated structures of quantum cellular automata. Motivated by …
Elementary excitations in the hybrid Bose-Fermi system induced by circularly polarized light in a two-dimensional gas of charge carriers with different masses
We introduce a model of three-dimensional (3D) topological order enriched by planar subsystem symmetries. The model is constructed starting from the 3D toric code, whose ground state can be viewed as an equal-weight superposition of two-dimensional (2D) membrane coverings. We then decorate those membranes with 2D cluster states possessing symmetry-protected topological order under line-like subsystem symmetries. This endows the decorated model with planar subsystem symmetries under which the loop-like excitations of the toric code fractionalize, resulting in an extensive degeneracy per unit le…
Quantum phases of matter are resources for notions of quantum computation. In this work, we establish a new link between concepts of quantum information theory and condensed matter physics by presenting a unified understanding of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) order protected by subsystem symmetries and its relation to measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC). The key unifying ingredient is the concept of quantum cellular automata (QCA) which we use to define subsystem symmetries acting on rigid lower-dimensional lines or fractals on a 2D lattice. Notably, both types of symmetries ar…
It is well-known that 3D Type-I fracton models can be obtained from the condensations of stacked layers of 2D anyons. It is less obvious if 3D Type-II fractons can be understood from a similar perspective. In this paper, we affirm that this is the case: we produce the paradigm Type-II fracton model, Haah's cubic code, from a 2D layer construction. However, this is not a condensation of 2D anyons, but rather we start with stacks of 2D subsystem-symmetry protected topological states (SSPT). As this parent model is not topologically ordered in the strict sense, whereas the final state is, we refe…
We demonstrate that linear combinations of subregion entropies with canceling boundary terms, commonly used to calculate the topological entanglement entropy, may suffer from spurious nontopological contributions even in models with zero correlation length. These spurious contributions are due to a specific kind of long-range string order, and persist throughout certain subsystem symmetry-protected phases. We introduce an entropic quantity that measures the presence of such order, and hence should serve as an order parameter for the aforementioned phases.
We propose a set of constraints on the ground-state wavefunctions of fracton phases, which provide a possible generalization of the string-net equations used to characterize topological orders in two spatial dimensions. Our constraint equations arise by exploiting a duality between certain fracton orders and quantum phases with "subsystem" symmetries, which are defined as global symmetries on lower-dimensional manifolds, and then studying the distinct ways in which the defects of a subsystem symmetry group can be consistently condensed to produce a gapped, symmetric state. We numerically solve…
We study 't Hooft anomalies and the related anomaly inflow for subsystem global symmetries. These symmetries and anomalies arise in a number of exotic systems, including models with fracton order such as the X-cube model. As is the case for ordinary global symmetries, anomalies for subsystem symmetries can be canceled by anomaly inflow from a bulk theory in one higher dimension; the corresponding bulk is therefore a non-trivial subsystem symmetry protected topological (SSPT) phase. We demonstrate these phenomena in several examples with continuous and discrete subsystem global symmetries, as w…
We study models with fracton-like order based on $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theories with subsystem symmetries in $d=2$ and $d=3$ spatial dimensions. The $3d$ model reduces to the $3$-dimensional Toric Code when subsystem symmetry is broken, giving an example of a subsystem symmetry enriched topological phase (SSET). Although not topologically protected, its ground state degeneracy has as leading contribution a term which grows exponentially with the square of the linear size of the system. Also, there are completely mobile gauge charges living along with immobile fractons. Our method shows …
Strongly correlated analogues of topological insulators have been explored in systems with purely on-site symmetries, such as time-reversal or charge conservation. Here, we use recently developed tensor network tools to study a quantum state of interacting bosons which is featureless in the bulk, but distinguished from an atomic insulator in that it exhibits entanglement which is protected by its spatial symmetries. These properties are encoded in a model many-body wavefunction that describes a fully symmetric insulator of bosons on the honeycomb lattice at half filling per site. While the res…

In this work, we present a collection of three-dimensional higher-order symmetry protected topological phases (HOSPTs) with gapless hinge modes that exist only in strongly interacting systems subject to subsystem symmetry constraints. We use a coupled wire construction to generate three families of microscopic lattice models: insulators with helical hinge modes, superconductors with chiral Majorana hinge modes, and fractionalized insulators with helical hinge modes that carry fractional charge. In particular, these HOSPTs do not require spatial symmetry protection, but are instead protected by…
Symmetry is an important property of quantum mechanical systems which may dramatically influence their behavior in and out of equilibrium. In this paper, we study the effect of symmetry on tripartite entanglement properties of typical states in symmetric sectors of Hilbert space. In particular, we consider Abelian symmetries and derive an explicit expression for the logarithmic entanglement negativity of systems with $\mathbb{Z}_N$ and $U(1)$ symmetry groups. To this end, we develop a diagrammatic method to incorporate partial transpose within the random matrix theory of symmetric states and f…
The Haldane phase (HP) is a paradigmatic example of symmetry protected topological phase. We explore how the bosonic HP behaves in the presence of local disorder, employing quantum Monte Carlo simulations of an extended Bose-Hubbard model subject to uncorrelated, quenched disorders. We find that the HP is robust against a weak disorder and the non-local string order of HP exhibits a reentrant behavior. Besides, a direct transition between the HP and superfluid phase is uncovered. A significant part of the ground-state phase diagram is established for the model, unveiling the location of HP sur…

Majorana zero modes (MZM-s) occurring at the edges of a 1D, p-wave, spinless superconductor, in absence of fluctuations of the phase of the superconducting order parameter, are quintessential examples of topologically-protected zero-energy modes occurring at the edges of 1D symmetry-protected topological phases. In this work, we numerically investigate the fate of the topological phase in the presence of phase-fluctuations using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique. To that end, we consider a one-dimensional array of MZM-s on mesoscopic superconducting islands at zero temp…
An extended Bose-Hubbard model (EBHM) with three- and four-body constraints can be feasible in cold atoms in an optical lattice. A rich phase structure including various symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases is obtained numerically with suitable parameter settings and particle filling. The SPT phase is characterized by the Berry phase as a local topological order parameter and the structure of the entanglement spectrum (ES). Based on the presence of various topological phases, separated by gapless phase boundaries, the EBHM exhibits various bosonic topological pumps, which are constructe…
We study the entanglement spectrum (ES) of the Bose-Hubbard model on the two dimensional square lattice at unit filling, both in the Mott insulating and in the superfluid phase. In the Mott phase, we demonstrate that the ES is dominated by the physics at the boundary between the two subsystems. On top of the boundary-local (perturbative) structure, the ES exhibits substructures arising from one-dimensional dispersions along the boundary. In the superfluid phase, the structure of the ES is qualitatively different, and reflects the spontaneously broken U(1) symmetry of the phase. We attribute th…
We prove that the boundaries of all non-trivial 1+1 dimensional intrinsically fermionic symmetry-protected-topological phases, protected by finite on-site symmetries (unitary or anti-unitary), are supersymmetric quantum mechanical systems. This supersymmetry does not require any fine-tuning of the underlying Hamiltonian, arises entirely as a consequence of the boundary 't Hooft anomaly that classifies the phase and is related to a `Bose-Fermi' degeneracy different in nature from other well known degeneracies such as Kramers doublets.
We present an unbiased numerical density-matrix renormalization group study of the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model supplemented by nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction and bond dimerization. It places the emphasis on the determination of the ground-state phase diagram and shows that, besides dimerized Mott and density-wave insulating phases, an intermediate symmetry-protected topological Haldane insulator emerges at weak Coulomb interactions for filling factor one, which disappears, however, when the dimerization becomes too large. Analyzing the critical behavior of the model, we prove that…
We study the thermodynamic properties of a 2D array of coupled one-dimensional Bose gases. The system is realized with ultracold bosonic atoms loaded in the potential tubes of a two-dimensional optical lattice. For negligible coupling strength, each tube is an independent weakly interacting 1D Bose gas featuring Tomonaga Luttinger liquid behavior. By decreasing the lattice depth, we increase the coupling strength between the 1D gases and allow for the phase transition into a 3D condensate. We extract the phase diagram for such a system and compare our results with theoretical predictions. Due …
