Non-minimally coupled scalar field models are well-known for providing interesting cosmological features. These include a late time dark energy behavior, a phantom dark energy evolution without singularity, an early time inflationary universe, scaling solutions, convergence to the standard $Λ$CDM, etc. While the usual stability analysis helps us determine the evolution of a model geometrically, bifurcation theory allows us to precisely locate the parameters' values describing the global dynamics without a fine-tuning of initial conditions. Using the center manifold theory and bifurcation analysis, we show that the general model undergoes a transcritical bifurcation, which predicts us to tune our models to have certain desired dynamics. We obtained a class of models and a range of parameters capable of describing a cosmic evolution from an early radiation era towards a late time dark energy era over a wide range of initial conditions. There is also a possible scenario of crossing the phantom divide line. We also find a class of models where the late time attractor mechanism is indistinguishable from that of a structurally stable general relativity based model; thus, we can elude the big rip singularity generically. Therefore, bifurcation theory allows us to select models that are viable with cosmological observations.
We show that the combined system of general relativity with a non minimally coupled electromagnetic field presents a bifurcation in a cosmical framework driven by a cosmological constant. In the same framework we show the existence of states such that the resulting combined energy (the sum of the minimally and the non minimally coupled energy momentum tensor of the electromagnetic field) vanishes in a sort of violation of the action-reaction principle.
We study dynamics of non-minimally coupled scalar field cosmological models with Higgs-like potentials and a negative cosmological constant. In these models the inflationary stage of the Universe evolution changes into a quasi-cyclic stage of the Universe evolution with oscillation behaviour of the Hubble parameter from positive to negative values. Depending on the initial conditions the Hubble parameter can perform either one or several cycles before to become negative forever.
Casimir effect for massless minimally coupled scalar field is studied. An explicit answer for de Sitter spacetime is obtained and analized. Cosmological implications of the result are discussed.
We investigate some cosmological models arising from a non-minimal coupling of a fermionic field to gravity in the geometrical setting of Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble gravity. The role played by the non-minimal coupling together with torsion in facing problems such as cosmological singularity, inflation and dark energy is discussed.
We study the cosmological evolution and singularity crossing in the Bianchi-I universe filled with a conformally coupled scalar field and compare them with those of the Bianchi-I universe filled with a minimally coupled scalar field. We also write down the solution for the Bianchi-I Universe in the induced gravity cosmology.
We study the minimally and non-minimally coupled scalar field models as possible alternatives for dark energy, the mysterious energy component that is driving the accelerated expansion of the universe. After discussing the dynamics at both the background and perturbation level, we confront the two models with the latest cosmological data. After obtaining updated constraints on their parameters we perform model selection using the basic information criteria. We found that the $Λ$CDM model is strongly favored when the local determination of the Hubble constant is not considered and that this sta…
Dynamical systems methods are used to investigate global behavior of the spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmological model in gravitational theory with a non-minimally coupled scalar field and a constant potential function. We show that the system can be reduced to an autonomous three-dimensional dynamical system and additionally is equipped with an invariant manifold corresponding to an accelerated expansion of the universe. Using this invariant manifold we find an exact solution of the reduced dynamics. We investigate all solutions for all admissible initial conditions using theor…
The solution to the current extending Universe problem, and the description of all stages of evolution compels scientists to consider various cosmological models. Scalar - tensor models are rather simple and also allow us to clearly define the separate stages of evolution. Furthermore, other cosmological models are reduced. Our work takes into consideration the non-minimally interacted scalar field and the spinor field. The spinor field has been considered to establish a better understanding of the stages of evolution in our Universe.
In this work a new non-minimally coupled model is presented, where a generic function $f(R)$ of the scalar curvature factors the usual Einstein-Hilbert action functional, motivated by relevant results obtained from similar models. Its cosmological dynamics are derived and the possibility of attaining a phase of accelerated expansion is assessed. To further probe the possible implications of the model, a dynamical system formulation is established, and used to assess the scenarios where $f(R)$ assumes a power-law or exponential form.
We consider a non-minimally coupled curvature-matter gravity model (NMC) with a Weyl connection, a theory referred to as non-minimally coupled Weyl connection gravity (NMCWCG). The Weyl connection is an affine connection that is not compatible with the metric, and involves a vector field. Assuming a vacuum expectation value for the vector field and a matter Lagrangian that only contains the contributions of the vacuum energy, we show that the model admits solutions in the space-form with a reference curvature that can be fine-tuned to much smaller values than the contribution of the matter fie…
Motivated by the structure of one-loop vacuum polarization effects in curved spacetime we discuss a non-minimal extension of the Einstein-Maxwell equations. This formalism is applied to Bianchi I models with magnetic field. We obtain several exact solutions of the non-minimal system including those which describe an isotropization process. We show that there are inflationary solutions in which the cosmological constant is determined by the non-minimal coupling parameters. Furthermore, we find an isotropic de Sitter solution characterized by a "screening" of the magnetic field as a consequence …
We explore dynamics of cosmological models with bounce solutions evolving on a spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker background. We consider cosmological models that contain the Hilbert-Einstein curvature term, the induced gravity term with a negative coupled constant, and even polynomial potentials of the scalar field. Bounce solutions with non-monotonic Hubble parameters have been obtained and analyzed. The case when the scalar field has the conformal coupling and the Higgs-like potential with an opposite sign is studied in detail. In this model the evolution of the Hubble param…
We consider cosmological dynamics of a canonical bulk scalar field, which is coupled non-minimally to 5-dimensional Ricci scalar in a DGP setup. We show that presence of this non-minimally coupled bulk scalar field affects the jump conditions of the original DGP model significantly. Within a superpotential approach, we perform some numerical analysis of the model parameter space and consider bulk-brane energy exchange in this setup. Also we show that the normal, ghost-free branch of the DGP solutions in this case has the potential to realize a self-consistent phantom-like behavior and therefor…
Using the dynamical system theory we show that the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmological model with bulk viscous fluid in the presence of cosmological constant is equivalent to a degenerate two dimensional Bogdanov-Takens normal form. The equation of state parameter, $ω$, the bulk viscosity coefficient, $ξ$, and the cosmological constant, $Λ$, define the necessary parameters for unfolding the degenerate Bogdanov-Takens system. The fixed points of the system are discussed together with the variation of their stability properties upon changing the relevant parameters $ω$, $Λ$ and $ξ$. Th…
We study the existence and stability of cosmological scaling solutions of a non-minimally coupled scalar field evolving in either an exponential or inverse power law potential. We show that for inverse power law potentials there exist scaling solutions the stability of which does not depend on the coupling constant $ξ$. We then study the more involved case of exponential potentials and show that the scalar field will assymptotically behaves as a barotropic fluid when $ξ\ll 1$. The general case $ξ\not\ll 1$ is then discussed an we illustrate these results by some numerical examples.
We examine Friedmann-Robertson-Walker models in three spacetime dimensions. The matter content of the models is composed of a perfect fluid, with a $γ$-law equation of state, and a homogeneous scalar field minimally coupled to gravity with a self-interacting potential whose energy density red-shifts as $a^{-2 ν}$, where a denotes the scale factor. Cosmological solutions are presented for different range of values of $γ$ and $ν$. The potential required to agree with the above red-shift for the scalar field energy density is also calculated.
The purpose of this study is to describe a perfect fluid matter distribution that leads to a constant curvature region, thanks to the effect of a non-minimal coupling. This distribution exhibits a density profile within the range found in the interstellar medium and an adequate matching of the metric components at its boundary. By identifying this constant curvature with the value of the cosmological constant, and superimposing the spherical distributions arising from different matter sources throughout the universe, one is able to mimic a large-scale homogeneous cosmological constant solution…
We study the integrable model with minimally and non-minimally coupled scalar fields and the correspondence of their general solutions. Using the model with a minimally coupled scalar field and a the constant potential as an example we demonstrate the difference between the general solutions of the corresponding models in the Jordan and the Einstein frames.
We investigate the cosmological dynamics of non-minimally coupled scalar field system described by $F(ϕ)R$ coupling with $F(ϕ)=(1-ξϕ^N)R$($N\ge2$) and the field potential, $V(ϕ)=V_0ϕ^n$. We use a generic set of dynamical variables to bring out new asymptotic regimes of the underlying dynamics. However, our dynamical variables miss the most important fixed point$-$ the de Sitter solution. We make use of the original form of system of equations to investigate the issues related to this important solution. In particular, we show that the de-Sitter solution which is a dynamical attractor of the sy…
The paper provides a qualitative and numerical analysis-based investigation of cosmological models founded on an asymmetrical scalar doublet comprising of a classical and a phantom scalar fields. Presence of a phantom scalar field allows one to consider also classical scalar fields with attraction of like-charged particles which significantly extends a diversity of cosmological models' behaviours. It is shown that a cosmological model based on an asymmetric scalar doublet in the case of minimal interaction has 9 singular points 2 of which are attractive and the rest are non-stable saddle ones.…
We obtain general solutions for some flat Friedmann universes filled with a scalar field in induced gravity models and models including the Hilbert-Einstein curvature term plus a scalar field conformally coupled to gravity. As is well known, these models are connected to minimally coupled models through the combination of a conformal transformation and a transformation of the scalar field. The explicit forms of the self-interaction potentials for six exactly solvable models are presented here. We obtain the general solution for one of the integrable models, namely, the induced gravity model wi…
We present self-similar cosmological solutions for a barotropic fluid plus scalar field with Brans-Dicke-type coupling to the spacetime curvature and an arbitrary power-law potential energy. We identify all the fixed points in the autonomous phase-plane, including a scaling solution where the fluid density scales with the scalar field's kinetic and potential energy. This is related by a conformal transformation to a scaling solution for a scalar field with exponential potential minimally coupled to the spacetime curvature, but non-minimally coupled to the barotropic fluid. Radiation is automat…
We show that the combined minimal and non minimal interaction with the gravitational field may produce the generation of a cosmological constant without self-interaction of the scalar field. In the same vein we analyze the existence of states of a scalar field that by a combined interaction of minimal and non minimal coupling with the gravitational field can exhibit an unexpected property, to wit, they are acted on by the gravitational field but do not generate gravitational field. In other words, states that seems to violate the action-reaction principle. We present explicit examples of this …
The stability criteria for spatially flat homogeneous and isotropic cosmological dynamical system is investigated with the interaction of a scalar field endowed with a perfect fluid. In this paper, we depict the dynamical system perspective to study, qualitatively, the scalar field cosmology under two special cases, with and without potential. For analysis with potential we use simple exponential potential form, $V_{o}e^{-λϕ}$. We generate, by introducing new dimensionless variables, an autonomous system of ordinary differential equations $(ASODE)$ for each case and obtain respective fixed poin…
A cosmological model where a fermion field is non-minimally coupled with the gravitational field is studied. By applying Noether symmetry the possible functions for the potential density of the fermion field and for the coupling are determined. Cosmological solutions are found showing that the non-minimally coupled fermion field behaves as an inflaton describing an accelerated inflationary scenario, whereas the minimally coupled fermion field describes a decelerated period being identified as dark matter.
We discuss cosmological model with homogeneous and isotropic Yang-Mills field non-minimally coupled to gravity through an effective mass term. In this model conformal symmetry is violated which leads to possibility of inflationary expansion. Parameters of non-minimal coupling have relatively ``natural'' values in the regime of sufficiently long acceleration stage.
We present a new mechanism to condense a scalar field coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet term. We propose a scenario in which the condensed state will emerge from the background energy density in the late-Universe. During the radiation and dust-dominated eras, the energy density of the scalar field, $ρ_φ$, decreases at a slower rate than the background density. Eventually, $ρ_φ$ dominates over the energy density of dust and the scalar field could be condensed. In the condensed phase, we have the de Sitter phase for the universe with $ρ_φ=3H_0^2M_P^2$. Moreover, we study the cosmological perturbations…
This paper generalizes two previously known techniques for generating minimally coupled Einstein-scalar field solutions in 4 dimensions; the Buchdahl and Fonarev transformations. By applying this solution generation technique, minimally coupled Einstein-scalar field solutions can be generated from vacuum solutions with arbitrary cosmological constant in arbitrary dimension. The only requirement to a seed solution is that it posesses a hypersurface-orthogonal Killing vector field. The generalization that allows us to use seed solutions with arbitrary cosmological constant uncovers a new class o…
We explore dynamics of cosmological models with a nonminimally coupled scalar field evolving on a spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker background. We consider cosmological models including the Hilbert-Einstein curvature term and the $N$ degree monomial of the scalar field nonminimally coupled to gravity. The potential of the scalar field is the $n$ degree monomial or polynomial. We describe several qualitatively different types of dynamics depending on values of power indices $N$ and $n$. We identify that three main possible pictures correspond to $n<N$, $N<n<2N$ and $n>2N$ cases…
In the context of the recently proposed type-II minimally modified gravity theory, i.e. a metric theory of gravity with two local physical degrees of freedom that does not possess an Einstein frame, we study spherically symmetric vacuum solutions to explore the strong gravity regime. Despite the absence of extra degrees of freedom in the gravity sector, the vacuum solutions are locally different from the Schwarzschild or Schwarzschild-(A)dS metric in general and thus the Birkhoff theorem does not hold. The general solutions are parameterized by several free functions of time and admit regular …
A model for the Universe is proposed whose constituents are: (a) a dark energy field modeled by a fermionic field non-minimally coupled with the gravitational field, (b) a matter field which consists of pressureless baryonic and dark matter fields and (c) a field which represents the radiation and the neutrinos. The coupled system of Dirac's equations and Einstein field equations is solved numerically by considering a spatially flat homogeneous and isotropic Universe. It is shown that the proposed model can reproduce the expected red-shift behaviors of the deceleration parameter, of the densit…
We study two cosmological models: A non-minimally coupled scalar field on brane world model and a minimally coupled scalar field on Lorentz invariance violation model. We compare some cosmological results in these scenarios. Also, we consider some types of Rip singularity solution in both models.
We present the four-dimensional equations on a brane with a scalar field non-minimally coupled to the induced Ricci curvature, embedded in a five-dimensional bulk with a cosmological constant. This is a natural extension to a brane-world context of scalar-tensor (Brans-Dicke) gravity. In particular we consider the cosmological evolution of a homogeneous and isotropic (FRW) brane. We identify low-energy and strong-coupling limits in which we recover effectively four-dimensional evolution. We find de Sitter brane solutions with both constant and evolving scalar field. We also consider the specia…
We apply dynamical systems techniques to investigate cosmological models inspired in scalar-tensor theories written in the Einstein frame. We prove that if the potential and the coupling function are sufficiently smooth functions, the scalar field almost always diverges into the past. The dynamics of two important invariant sets is investigated in some detail. By assuming some regularity conditions for the potential and for the coupling function, it is constructed a dynamical system well suited to investigate the dynamics where the scalar field diverges, i.e. near the initial singularity. The …
We have used the dynamical system approach in order to investigate the dynamics of cosmological models of the flat Universe with a non-minimally coupled canonical and phantom scalar field and the Ratra-Peebles potential. Applying methods of the bifurcation theory we have found three cases for which the Universe undergoes a generic evolution emerging from either the deSitter or the static Universe state and finishing at the deSitter state, without the presence of the initial singularity. This generic class of solutions explains both the inflation and the late-time acceleration of the Universe. …
In this publication we investigate dynamics of a flat FRW cosmological model with a non-minimally coupled scalar field with the coupling term $ξR ψ^{2}$ in the scalar field action. The quadratic potential function $V(ψ)\propto ψ^{2}$ is assumed. All the evolutional paths are visualized and classified in the phase plane, at which the parameter of non-minimal coupling $ξ$ plays the role of a control parameter. The fragility of global dynamics with respect to changes of the coupling constant is studied in details. We find that the future big rip singularity appearing in the phantom scalar field c…
Non-minimal actions with matter represented by a scalar field coupled to gravity are considered in the context of a homogeneous and isotropic universe. The coupling is of the form $-ξ/2 ϕ^2 R$. The possibility of successful inflation is investigated taking into account features of loop cosmology. For that end a conformal transformation is performed. That brings the theory into the standard minimally coupled form (Einstein frame) with some effective field and its potential. Both analytical and numerical estimates show that a negative coupling constant is preferable for successful inflation. Mor…
We study integrable models in the Bianchi I metric case with scalar fields minimally and non-minimally coupled with gravity and the correspondence between their general solutions. Using the model with a minimally coupled scalar field and a constant potential as an example, we demonstrate how to obtain the general solutions of the corresponding models in the Jordan frame.
We study higher-dimensional soliton and hairy black hole solutions of the Einstein equations non-minimally coupled to a scalar field. The scalar field has no self-interaction potential but a cosmological constant is included. Non-trivial solutions exist only when the cosmological constant is negative and the constant governing the coupling of the scalar field to the Ricci scalar curvature is positive. At least some of these solutions are stable when this coupling constant is not too large.
We examine the stability and the strong cosmic censorship in the Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter (RN-dS) black hole by investigating the evolution of a scalar field non-minimally coupled to the curvature. We find that when the coupling parameter is negative, the RN-dS black hole experiences instability. The instability disappears when the coupling parameter becomes non-negative. With the increase of the coupling parameter, the violation of the strong cosmic censorship occurs at a larger critical charge ratio. But such an increase of the critical charge is suppressed by the increase of the cosmolo…
We consider gravity theory with varying speed of light and varying gravitational constant. Both constants are represented by non-minimally coupled scalar fields. We examine the cosmological evolution in the near curvature singularity regime. We find that at the curvature singularity the speed of light goes to infinity while the gravitational constant vanishes. This corresponds to the Newton's Mechanics limit represented by one of the vertex of the Bronshtein-Zelmanov-Okun cube. The cosmological evolution includes both the pre-big-bang and post-big-bang phases separated by the curvature singula…
We solve the Wheeler-DeWitt equation for the minisuperspace of a cosmological model of Bianchi type I with a minimally coupled massive scalar field $ϕ$ as source by generalizing the calculation of Lukash and Schmidt [1]. Contrarily to other approaches we allow strong anisotropy. Combining analytical and numerical methods, we apply an adiabatic approximation for $ϕ$, and as new feature we find a period-doubling bifurcation. This bifurcation takes place near the cosmological quantum boundary, i.e., the boundary of the quasiclassical region with oscillating $ψ$-function where the WKB-approximatio…
In this work, in the framework of dynamical system analysis, we focus on the study of the accelerated expansion of the Universe of $f(Q)$ gravity theory where $Q$ be the non-metricity that describes the gravitational interaction. We consider the linear form of $f(Q)$ gravity i.e. $f(Q)=-α_{1}Q-α_{2}$ where $α_{1}$ and $α_{2}$ are constants. We consider an interaction between dark matter (DM) and dark energy (DE) in $f(Q)$ gravity. To reduce the modified Friedmann equations to an autonomous system of first-order ordinary differential equations, we introduce some dimensionless new variables. The…
We give a complete description of the asymptotic behavior of a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe with ``normal'' matter and a minimally coupled scalar field. We classify the conditions under which the Universe is or is not accelerating. In particular, we show that only two types of large time behavior exist: an exponential regime, and a subexponential expansion with the logarithmic derivative of the scale factor tending to zero. In the case of the subexponetial expansion the Universe accelerates when the scalar field energy density is dominant and the potential behaves in a specified manner,…
We study evolution of cosmological models filled with the scalar field and barotropic matter. We consider the scalar field minimally and non-minimally coupled to gravity. We demonstrated the growth of degree of complexity of evolutional scenario through the description of matter content in terms of the scalar field. In study of all evolutional paths for all initial conditions methods of dynamical systems are used. Using linearized solutions we present simple method of derivation corresponding form of the Hubble function of the scale factor $H(a)$.
We investigate the possibility of dressing a four-dimensional black hole with classical scalar field hair which is non-minimally coupled to the space-time curvature. Our model includes a cosmological constant but no self-interaction potential for the scalar field. We are able to rule out black hole hair except when the cosmological constant is negative and the constant governing the coupling to the Ricci scalar curvature is positive. In this case, non-trivial hairy black hole solutions exist, at least some of which are linearly stable. However, when the coupling constant becomes too large, the…
We study asymptotic safety of models of the higher derivative quantum gravity with and without matter. The beta functions are derived by utilizing the functional renormalization group, and non-trivial fixed points are found. It turns out that all couplings in gravity sector, namely the cosmological constant, the Newton constant, and the $R^2$ and $R_{μν}^2$ coupling constants, are relevant in case of higher derivative pure gravity. For the Higgs-Yukawa model non-minimal coupled with higher derivative gravity, we find a stable fixed point at which the scalar-quartic and the Yukawa coupling cons…
We investigate the dynamics of Einstein equations in the vicinity of the two recently described types of singularity of anisotropic and homogeneous cosmological models described by the action $$ S=\int d^4x \sqrt{-g}{F(ϕ)R - \partial_aϕ\partial^aϕ-2V(ϕ)}, $$ with general $F(ϕ)$ and $V(ϕ)$. The dynamical nature of each singularity is elucidated, and we show that both are, in general, dynamically unavoidable, reinforcing the unstable character of previous isotropic and homogeneous cosmological results obtained for the conformal coupling case.

We derive an exact solution belonging to Kundt class of spacetimes both with and without a cosmological constant that are minimally coupled to a free massless scalar field. We show the algebraic type of these solutions and give interpretation of the results. Subsequently, we look for solutions additionally containing an electromagnetic field satisfying nonlinear field equations.
We propose a new cosmological framework in which the strength of the gravitational force acted on dark matter at late time can be weaker than that on the standard matter fields without introducing extra gravitational degrees of freedom. The framework integrates dark matter into a type-II minimally modified gravity that was recently proposed as a dark energy mimicker. The idea that makes such a framework possible consists of coupling a dark matter Lagrangian and a cosmological constant to the metric in a canonically transformed frame of general relativity (GR). On imposing a gauge fixing constr…
In this paper we generalize our previous results on spin connection for the linear scalar cosmological perturbation in $f(T)$ theory to wider class of theories which includes a scalar field $Φ$ non-minimally coupled to torsion, and allows $Φ$-dependence of the function $f$. The case of $f_{TT}=0$, with a scalar field non-minimally coupled to torsion needs a special treatment. In both considered cases we derive self-consistent equations of motion for cosmological perturbation using a solution for non-trivial spin connection.
The slow roll approximation is studied for cosmological models in Hyperextended Scalar-Tensor Theories of Gravity. A procedure to obtain slow roll solutions in non-minimally coupled gravity is outlined and some examples are provided. An integral condition over the functional form of the non-minimal coupling is imposed in order to obtain intermediate inflationary behavior.
Minimally modified gravity is a class of models with only the two tensor degrees of freedom as in general relativity. Using the framework with auxiliary constraints these models can maintain a dynamical cosmological background. The form of the constraints is thereby restricted by the requirement of dynamical dark energy and the avoidance of a breakdown of perturbation theory. Studying the linear perturbations around the FLRW background the results are, however, quite insensitive to the details of the constraints leading to a modified effective gravitational constant or a non-vanishing sound sp…
A linear relationship between the Hubble expansion parameter and the time derivative of the scalar field is assumed in order to derive exact analytic cosmological solutions to Einstein's gravity with two fluids: a barotropic perfect fluid of ordinary matter, together with a self-interacting scalar field fluid accounting for the dark energy in the universe. A priori assumptions about the functional form of the self-interaction potential or about the scale factor behavior are not neccessary. These are obtained as outputs of the assumed linear relationship between the Hubble expansion parameter a…
