In the present paper we consider a Gaussian thermostat on a compact Riemannian surface with negative thermostat curvature. In the case of surfaces with boundary, we show that the thermostat ray transform with attenuation given by a general connection and Higgs field is injective, modulo the natural obstruction, for tensors. We also prove that the connection and Higgs field can be determined, up to a gauge transformation, from the knowledge of the parallel transport between boundary points along all possible thermostat geodesics. In the case of closed surfaces, we obtain similar results for the ray transform with some additional conditions on the connection. Under the same condition, we study connections and Higgs fields whose parallel transport along periodic thermostat geodesics coincides with the ones for the flat connection.
We show that the attenuated geodesic ray transform on two dimensional simple surfaces is injective. Moreover we give a stability estimate and develop a reconstruction procedure.
We describe the range of the attenuated ray transform of a unitary connection on a simple surface acting on functions and 1-forms. We use this to determine the range of the ray transform acting on symmetric tensor fields.
We present two range characterizations for the attenuated geodesic X-ray transform defined on pairs of functions and one-forms on simple surfaces. Such characterizations are based on first isolating the range over sums of functions and one-forms, then separating each sub-range in two ways, first by implicit conditions, second by deriving new inversion formulas for sums of functions and one-forms.
We study the problem of recovery both the attenuation $a$ and the source $f$ in the attenuated X-ray transform in the plane. We study the linearization as well. It turns out that there are natural Hamiltonian flow that determines which singularities we can recover. If the perturbations $δa$, $δf$ are supported in a compact set that is non-trapping for that flow, then the problem is well posed. Otherwise, it may not be, and least in the case of radial $a$, $f$, it is not. We present uniqueness and non-uniqueness results for both the linearized and the non-linear problem; as well as a Hölder sta…
This article deals with stability issues related to geodesic X-ray transforms, where an interplay between the (attenuation type) weight in the transform and the underlying geometry strongly impact whether the problem is stable or unstable. In the unstable case, we also explain what types of artifacts are expected in terms of the underlying conjugate points and the microlocal weights at those points. We show in particular that the well-known iterative reconstruction Landweber algorithm cannot provide accurate reconstruction when the problem is unstable, though the artifacts generated, specific …
We derive explicit reconstruction formulas for the attenuated geodesic X-ray transform over functions and, in the case of non-vanishing attenuation, vector fields, on a class of simple Riemannian surfaces with boundary. These formulas partly rely on new explicit approaches to construct continuous right-inverses for backprojection operators (and, in turn, holomorphic integrating factors), which were previously unavailable in a systematic form. The reconstruction of functions is presented in two ways, the latter one being motivated by numerical considerations and successfully implemented at the …
In this paper we consider the Gaussian thermostat ray transform on both closed Riemannian surfaces and compact Riemannian surfaces with boundary. We establish certain results on the injectivity of the thermostat ray transform and the surjectivity of its adjoint.
For a compact Riemannian surface with boundary we study attenuated geodesic transform of functions and differential forms. We generalize several known results on uniqueness and stability of this transform dropping condition of absence of conjugate points.
We show that for a simple surface with boundary the attenuated ray transform in the presence of a unitary connection and a skew-Hermitian Higgs field is injective modulo the natural obstruction for functions and vector fields. We also show that the connection and the Higgs field are uniquely determined by the scattering relation modulo a gauge transformation. The proofs involve a Pestov type energy identity for connections together with holomorphic gauge transformations which arrange the curvature of the connection to have definite sign.
It has been shown in [Pa1] that on a simple, compact Riemannian 2-manifold the attenuated geodesic ray transform, with attenuation given by a connection and Higgs field, is injective on functions and 1-forms modulo the natural obstruction. Furthermore, the scattering relation determines the connection and Higgs field modulo a gauge transformation. We extend the results obtained therein to the case of magnetic geodesics. In addition, we provide an application to tensor tomography in the magnetic setting, along the lines of [Pa2].
For a two-dimensional simple magnetic system, we study the attenuated magnetic ray transform $I_{A,Φ}$, with attenuation given by a unitary connection $A$ and a skew-Hermitian Higgs field $Φ$. We give a description for the range of $I_{A,Φ}$ acting on $\mathbb C^n$-valued tensor fields.
In this paper we consider the geodesic X-ray transform with attenuation coefficient as a combination of smooth complex function and 1-form. We show that attenuated X-ray transform applied to the pair of tensors is injective modulo the natural obstruction.
We first give a constructive answer to the attenuated tensor tomography problem on simple surfaces. We then use this result to propose two approaches to produce vector-valued integral transforms which are fully injective over tensor fields. The first approach is by construction of appropriate weights which vary along the geodesic flow, generalizing the moment transforms. The second one is by changing the pairing with the tensor field to generate a collection of transverse ray transforms.
We consider a general family of curves $Γ$ on a compact oriented Finsler surface $(M,F)$ with boundary $\partial M$. Let $φ\in C^{\infty}(M)$ and $ω$ a smooth 1-form on $M$. We show that $$\int_{γ(t)}\{φ(γ(t))+ω_{γ(t)}(\dotγ(t))\}\,dt=0$$ holds for every $γ\inΓ$ whose endpoints belong to $\partial M$, $γ(a)\in\partial M$, $γ(b)\in\partial M$ if and only if $φ=0$ and $ω$ is exact. Similar results were proved when $M$ is closed and some additional conditions on Gaussian curvature are imposed. We also study the cohomological equations of Anosov generelized thermostats on a closed Finsler surface.…
We study the geodesic X-ray transform $X$ on compact Riemannian surfaces with conjugate points. Regardless of the type of the conjugate points, we show that we cannot recover the singularities and therefore, this transform is always unstable (ill-posed). We describe the microlocal kernel of $X$ and relate it to the conjugate locus. We present numerical examples illustrating the cancellation of singularities. We also show that the attenuated X-ray transform is well posed if the attenuation is positive and there are no more than two conjugate points along each geodesic; but still ill-posed, if t…
We reduce boundary determination of an unknown function and its normal derivatives from the (possibly weighted and attenuated) broken ray data to the injectivity of certain geodesic ray transforms on the boundary. For determination of the values of the function itself we obtain the usual geodesic ray transform, but for derivatives this transform has to be weighted by powers of the second fundamental form. The problem studied here is related to Calderón's problem with partial data.
We consider the anisotropic Calderon problem of recovering a conductivity matrix or a Riemannian metric from electrical boundary measurements in three and higher dimensions. In the earlier work \cite{DKSaU}, it was shown that a metric in a fixed conformal class is uniquely determined by boundary measurements under two conditions: (1) the metric is conformally transversally anisotropic (CTA), and (2) the transversal manifold is simple. In this paper we will consider geometries satisfying (1) but not (2). The first main result states that the boundary measurements uniquely determine a mixed Four…
We consider the problem of developing a method to reconstruct a potential $q$ from the partial data Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the Schrödinger equation $(-Δ_g+q)u=0$ on a fixed admissible manifold $(M,g)$. If the part of the boundary that is inaccessible for measurements satisfies a flatness condition in one direction, then we reconstruct the local attenuated geodesic ray transform of the one-dimensional Fourier transform of the potential $q$. This allows us to reconstruct $q$ locally, if the local (unattenuated) geodesic ray transform is constructively invertible. We also reconstruct $q$ gl…
We consider integral geometry inverse problems for unitary connections and skew-Hermitian Higgs fields on manifolds with negative sectional curvature. The results apply to manifolds in any dimension, with or without boundary, and also in the presence of trapped geodesics. In the boundary case, we show injectivity of the attenuated ray transform on tensor fields with values in a Hermitian bundle (i.e. vector valued case). We also show that a connection and Higgs field on a Hermitian bundle are determined up to gauge by the knowledge of the parallel transport between boundary points along all po…
Consider a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $\geq 3$ with strictly convex boundary, such that the manifold admits a strictly convex function. We show that the attenuated ray transform in the presence of an arbitrary connection and Higgs field is injective modulo the natural obstruction for functions and one-forms. We also show that the connection and the Higgs field are uniquely determined by the scattering relation modulo gauge transformations. The proofs involve a reduction to a local result showing that the geodesic X-ray transform with a matrix weight can be inverted locally near a…
We consider the nonlinear problem of determining a connection and a Higgs field from the corresponding parallel transport along geodesics on a Riemannian manifold with boundary, in any dimension. The problem can be reduced to an integral geometry question of some attenuated geodesic ray transform through a pseudolinearization argument. We show injectivity (up to natural obstructions) and stability estimates for both the linear and nonlinear problems for generic simple metrics and generic connections and Higgs fields, including the real-analytic ones. We consider the problems on simple manifold…
