In this work, the structural, electrical, and optical properties of bilayer SiX (X= N, P, As, and Sb) are studied using density functional theory (DFT). Five different stacking orders are considered for every compound and their structural properties are presented. The band structure of these materials demonstrates that they are indirect semiconductors. The out-of-plane strain has been applied to tune the bandgap and its electrical properties. The bandgap increases with tensile strain, whereas, compressive strain leads to semiconductor-to-metal transition. The sensitivity of the bandgap to the pressure is investigated and bilayer SiSb demonstrates the highest bandgap sensitivity to the pressure. These structures exhibit Mexican hat-like valence band dispersion that can be approved by a singularity in the density of states. The Mexican-hat coefficient can be tuned by out-of-plane strain. Optical absorption of these compounds shows that the second and lower valence bands due to the high density of states display a higher contribution to optical transitions.
Nonreciprocal charge transport, which is frequently termed as electrical magnetochiral anisotropy (EMCA) in chiral conductors, touches the most important elements of modern condensed matter physics. Here, we have investigated the EMCA in Pt/PtMnGa (PMG) bilayers with the assitance of nonequilibrium fluctuation theorems. Large EMCA in the Pt/PMG bilayers can be attributed to nonreciprocal response of an interface-driven chiral transport channel. Due to the presence of large charge fluctuations for small current region, higher order EMCA coefficients should be added and they are all functions of…
We report a tunable spin mixing conductance, up to $\pm 22\%$, in a Y${}_{3}$Fe${}_{5}$O${}_{12}$/Platinum (YIG/Pt) bilayer. This control is achieved by applying a gate voltage with an ionic gate technique, which exhibits a gate-dependent ferromagnetic resonance line width. Furthermore, we observed a gate-dependent spin pumping and spin Hall angle in the Pt layer, which is also tunable up to $\pm$ 13.6\%. This work experimentally demonstrates spin current control through spin pumping and a gate voltage in a YIG/Pt bilayer, demonstrating the crucial role of the interfacial charge density for the…
In this work, the electrical properties of bilayer Antimonene with different stacking orders are studied. Density functional theory with van der Waals (vdW) correction is used to investigate the electrical performances. Two configurations demonstrate considerable bandgaps, whereas, the bandgaps are close to zero for other structures. The in-plane biaxial strain is applied to modify the electrical properties. The bandgap reaches a maximum at a specific strain level and then closes at more enormous compressive and tensile strains. The energy of three valleys ($Γ$, Q, and K) in the conduction ban…
We study current-induced switching of the Néel vector in CoO/Pt bilayers to understand the underlaying antiferromagnetic switching mechanism. Surprisingly, we find that for ultra-thin CoO/Pt bilayers electrical pulses along the same path can lead to an increase or decrease of the spin Hall magnetoresistance signal, depending on the current density of the pulse. By comparing the results of these electrical measurements to XMLD-PEEM imaging of the antiferromagnetic domain structure before and after the application of current pulses, we reveal the reorientation of the Néel vector in ultra-thin Co…
In this paper, the electrical and spin properties of mono- and bilayer HfSSe in the presence of a vertical electric field are studied. The density functional theory is used to investigate their properties. Fifteen different stacking orders of bilayer HfSSe are considered. The mono- and bilayer demonstrate an indirect bandgap, whereas the bandgap of bilayer can be effectively controlled by electric field. While the bandgap of bilayer closes at large electric fields and a semiconductor to metal transition occurs, the effect of a normal electric field on the bandgap of the monolayer HfSSe is quit…
We report the temperature dependent electrical transport properties of gated bilayer graphene devices. We see a clear evidence of insulating behavior due to electron-hole charge puddles. The electrical resistivity increases while the mobility decreases with decreasing temperature, a characteristic due to carrier inhomogeneity in graphene. The theoretical fittings using an empirical formula of single electron tunneling indicate that electrical resistivity follows a universal curve with a scaling parameter. The scaling parameter is determined to be a measure of the fluctuations in the electron-h…
Topological properties of electronic states in multivalley two-dimensional materials, such as mono- and bilayer graphene, or thin films of rhombohedral graphite, give rise to various unusual magneto-transport regimes. Here, we investigate the tunability of the topological magnetic moment (related to the Berry curvature) of electronic states in bilayer graphene using strain and vertical bias. We show how one can controllably vary the valley $g$-factor of the band-edge electrons, $g_v^*$, across the range $10 < |g_v^*| < 200$, and we discuss the manifestations of the topological magnetic moment …
Van der Waals heterostructures formed by stacking two-dimensional atomic crystals are a unique platform for exploring new phenomena and functionalities. Interlayer excitons, bound states of spatially separated electron-hole pairs in van der Waals heterostructures, have demonstrated potential for rich valley physics and optoelectronics applications, and been proposed to facilitate high-temperature superfluidity. Here, we demonstrate highly tunable layer-polarized excitons by an out-of-plane electric field in homo-bilayers of transition metal dichalcogenides. Continuous tuning from negative to p…
Low-frequency 1/f noise is ubiquitous, and dominates the signal-to-noise performance in nanodevices. Here we investigate the noise characteristics of single-layer and bilayer graphene nano-devices, and uncover an unexpected 1/f noise behavior for bilayer devices. Graphene is a single layer of graphite, where carbon atoms form a 2D honeycomb lattice. Despite the similar composition, bilayer graphene (two graphene monolayers stacked in the natural graphite order) is a distinct 2D system with a different band structure and electrical properties. In graphene monolayers, the 1/f noise is found to f…
We report the transport properties of monolayer and bilayer graphene from first principles calculations and Boltzmann transport theory (BTE). Our resistivity studies on monolayer graphene show Bloch-Gr${\rm \ddot{u}}$neisen behavior in a certain range of chemical potentials. By substituting boron nitride in place of a carbon dimer of graphene, we predict a twofold increase in the Seebeck coefficient. A similar increase in the Seebeck coefficient for bilayer graphene under the influence of a small electric field $\sim 0.3$ eV has been observed in our calculations. Graphene with impurities shows…
Twisted graphene bilayers provide a versatile platform to engineer metamaterials with novel emergent properties by exploiting the resulting geometric moiré superlattice. Such superlattices are known to host bulk valley currents at tiny angles ($α\approx 0.3 ^\circ$) and flat bands at magic angles ($α\approx 1^\circ$). We show that tuning the twist angle to $α^*\approx 0.8^\circ$ generates flat bands away from charge neutrality with a triangular superlattice periodicity. When doped with $\pm 6$ electrons per moiré cell, these bands are half-filled and electronic interactions produce a symmetry-…
Twisted van der Waals heterostructures with flat electronic bands have recently emerged as a platform for realizing correlated and topological states with an extraordinary degree of control and tunability. In graphene-based moiré heterostructures, the correlated phase diagram and band topology depend strongly on the number of graphene layers, their relative stacking arrangement, and details of the external environment from the encapsulating crystals. Here, we report that the system of twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene (tMBG) hosts a variety of correlated metallic and insulating states, as wel…
The twist degree of freedom provides a powerful new tool for engineering the electrical and optical properties of van der Waals heterostructures. Here, we show that the twist angle can be used to control the spin-valley properties of transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers by changing the momentum alignment of the valleys in the two layers. Specifically, we observe that the interlayer excitons in twisted WSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ bilayers exhibit a high (>60%) degree of circular polarization (DOCP) and long valley lifetimes (>40 ns) at zero electric and magnetic fields. The valley lifetime can be tuned…
We report on the observation of stable electrical oscillation in Pt/VO2 bilayer strips, in which the Pt overlayer serves the dual purposes of heating up the VO2 and weakening the electric field in the VO2 layer. Systematic measurements in an ultrahigh vacuum nanoprobe system show that the oscillation frequency increases with the bias current and/or with decreasing device dimension. In contrast to most VO2-based oscillators reported to date, which are electrically triggered, current-induced Joule heating in the Pt overlayer is found to play a dominant role in the generation of oscillation in Pt…
We report the infrared transmission measurement on electrically gated twisted bilayer graphene. The optical absorption spectrum clearly manifests the dramatic changes such as the splitting of inter-linear-band absorption step, the shift of inter-van Hove singularity transition peak, and the emergence of very strong intra-valence (intra-conduction) band transition. These anomalous optical behaviors demonstrate consistently the non-rigid band structure modification created by the ion-gel gating through the layer-dependent Coulomb screening. We propose that this screening-driven band modification…
We investigate electrical gating of photoluminescence and optical absorption in monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) configured in field effect transistor geometry. We observe an hundredfold increase in photoluminescence intensity and an increase in absorption at ~660 nm in these devices when an external gate voltage is decreased from +50 V to -50 V, while the photoluminescence wavelength remains nearly constant. In contrast, in bilayer MoS$_2$ devices we observe almost no changes in photoluminescence with gate voltage. We propose that the differing responses of the monolayer and bilayer d…
Moiré superlattice-induced sub-bands in twisted van der Waals homo- and hetero-structures govern their optical and electrical properties, rendering additional degrees of freedom such as twist angle. Here, we demonstrate the moiré superlattice effects on the intralayer excitons and trions in a twisted bilayer of MoS$_2$ of H-type stacking at marginal twist angles. We identify the emission from localized and multiple delocalized sub-bands of intralayer moiré excitons and show their electrical modulation by the corresponding trion formation. The electrical control of the oscillator strength of th…
Opening up a band gap of the graphene and finding a suitable substrate are two challenges for constituting the nano-electronic equipment. A new two-dimensional layered crystal g-C2N (Nat. Commun. 2015, 6, 1--7) with novel electronic and optical properties can be effectively synthesized via a wet-chemical reaction. And g-C2N can be used as a suitable substrate to open the band gap of graphene as much as 0.239 eV, which is large enough for the band gap opening at room temperature. The physics behind the band gap opening is that g-C2N substrate can produce the inhomogeneous electrostatic potentia…
We report electrical current switching of noncollinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) Mn$_3$GaN/Pt bilayers at room temperature. The Hall resistance of these bilayers can be manipulated by applying a pulse current of $1.5\times10^6$~A/cm$^2$, whereas no significant change is observed up to $\sim10^8$~A/cm$^2$ in Mn$_3$GaN single films, indicating that the Pt layer plays an important role. In comparison with ferrimagnetic Mn$_3$GaN/Pt bilayers, a lower electrical current switching of noncollinear AFM Mn$_3$GaN is demonstrated, with a critical current density two orders of magnitude smaller. Our result…
Detection of local strain at the nanometer scale with high sensitivity remains challenging. Here we report near-field infrared nano-imaging of local strains in bilayer graphene through probing strain-induced shifts of phonon frequency. As a non-polar crystal, intrinsic bilayer graphene possesses little infrared response at its transverse optical (TO) phonon frequency. The reported optical detection of local strain is enabled by applying a vertical electrical field that breaks the symmetry of the two graphene layers and introduces finite electrical dipole moment to graphene phonon. The activate…
We develop a theory for density, disorder, and temperature dependent electrical conductivity of bilayer graphene in the presence of long-range charged impurity scattering as well as an additional short-range disorder of independent origin, establishing that both scattering mechanisms contribute significantly to determining bilayer transport properties. We find that although strong screening properties of bilayer graphene lead to qualitative differences with the corresponding single layer situation, both systems exhibit the linearly density dependent conductivity at high density and the minimum…
The discovery of electric field induced bandgap opening in bilayer graphene opens new door for making semiconducting graphene without aggressive size scaling or using expensive substrates. However, bilayer graphene samples have been limited to um size scale thus far, and synthesis of wafer scale bilayer graphene posts tremendous challenge. Here we report homogeneous bilayer graphene films over at least 2 inch x 2 inch area, synthesized by chemical vapor deposition on copper foil and subsequently transferred to arbitrary substrates. The bilayer nature of graphene film is verified by Raman spect…
Coupling degrees of freedom of distinct nature plays a critical role in numerous physical phenomena. The recent emergence of layered materials provides a laboratory for studying the interplay between internal quantum degrees of freedom of electrons. Here, we report experimental signatures of new coupling phenomena connecting real spin with layer pseudospins in bilayer WSe2. In polarization-resolved photoluminescence measurements, we observe large spin orientation of neutral and charged excitons generated by both circularly and linearly polarized light, with a splitting of the trion spectrum in…
A striking feature of bilayer graphene is the induction of a significant band gap in the electronic states by the application of a perpendicular electric field. Thicker graphene layers are also highly attractive materials. The ability to produce a band gap in these systems is of great fundamental and practical interest. Both experimental and theoretical investigations of graphene trilayers with the typical ABA layer stacking have, however, revealed the lack of any appreciable induced gap. Here we contrast this behavior with that exhibited by graphene trilayers with ABC crystallographic stackin…

Electrical detection of topological magnetic textures such as skyrmions is currently limited to conducting materials. While magnetic insulators offer key advantages for skyrmion technologies with high speed and low loss, they have not yet been explored electrically. Here, we report a prominent topological Hall effect in Pt/Tm$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ bilayers, where the pristine Tm$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ epitaxial films down to 1.25 unit cell thickness allow for tuning of topological Hall stability over a broad range from 200 to 465 K through atomic-scale thickness control. Although Tm$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ i…
The temperature $T$ and magnetic field $H$ dependence of anisotropic in-plane $ρ_{ab}$ and out-of-plane $ρ_{c}$ resistivities have been investigated in single crystals of the bilayer manganite La$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$. Below the Curie transition temperature $T_c=$ 125 K, $ρ_{ab}$ and $ρ_{c}$ display almost the same temperature dependence with an up-turn around 50 K. In the metallic regime (50 K $\leq T \leq$ 110 K), both $ρ_{ab}(T)$ and $ρ_{c}(T)$ follow a $T^{9/2}$ dependence, consistent with the two-magnon scattering. We found that the value of the proportionality coefficient $B_{…
We report room temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy study of bilayer graphene prepared by mechanical exfoliation on SiO$_2$/Si surface and electrically contacted with gold pads using a mechanical mask. The bulk conductivity shows contribution from regions of varying electron density indicating significant charge inhomogeneity. Large scale topographic images show ripple like structures with a roughness of $\sim$1nm while the small scale atomic resolution images show graphite-like triangular lattice. Local dI/dV-V tunnel spectra have an asymmetric V-shape with the minima lo…
Intense current pulses are often required to operate microelectronic and spintronic devices. Notably, strong current pulses have been shown to induce magnetoresistance changes attributed to domain reorientation in antiferromagnet/heavy metal bilayers and non-centrosymmetric antiferromagnets. In such cases, nonmagnetic resistivity changes may dominate over signatures of antiferromagnetic switching. We report systematic measurements of the current-induced changes of the transverse and longitudinal resistance of Pt and Pt/NiO layers deposited on insulating substrates, namely Si/SiO$_2$, Si/Si$_3$…
The effect of grain boundaries and wrinkles on the electrical properties of polycrystalline graphene is pronounced. Here we investigate the stitching between grains of polycrystalline graphene, specifically, overlapping of layers at the boundaries, grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and subsequently doped by the oxidized Cu substrate. We analyze overlapped regions between 60 and 220 nm wide via Raman spectroscopy, and find that some of these overlapped boundaries contain AB stacked bilayers. The Raman spectra from the overlapped grain boundaries are distinctly different from bilayer grap…
With exceptional electrical and mechanical properties and at the same time air-stability, layered MoSi2N4 has recently draw great attention. However, band structure engineering via strain and electric field, which is vital for practical applications, has not yet been explored. In this work, we show that the biaxial strain and external electric field are effective ways for the band gap engineering of bilayer MoSi$_2$N$_4$ and WSi$_2$N$_4$. It is found that strain can lead to indirect band gap to direct band gap transition. On the other hand, electric field can result in semiconductor to metal t…
Tin chalcogenides (SnS, SnSe, and SnTe) are found to have improved thermoelectric properties upon the reduction of their dimensionality. Here we found the tilted AA + s stacked two-dimensional (2D) SnTe bilayer as the most stable phase among several stackings as predicted by the structural optimization and phonon transport properties. The carrier mobility and relaxation time are evaluated using the deformation potential theory, which is found to be relatively high due to the high 2D elastic modulus, low deformation potential constant, and moderate effective masses. The SnTe bilayer shows a hig…
We investigate the effect of an electrical current on the attenuation length of a 900 nm wavelength spin-wave in a permalloy/Pt bilayer using propagating spin-wave spectroscopy. The modification of the spin-wave relaxation rate is linear in current density, reaching up to 14% for a current density of 2.3$\times10^{11} $A/m$^2$ in Pt. This change is attributed to the spin transfer torque induced by the spin Hall effect and corresponds to an effective spin Hall angle of 0.13, which is among the highest values reported so far. The spin Hall effect thus appears as an efficient way of amplifying/at…
We fabricated a large number of single and bilayer graphene transistors and carried out a systematic experimental study of their low-frequency noise characteristics. A special attention was given to determining the dominant noise sources in these devices and the effect of aging on the current-voltage and noise characteristics. The analysis of the noise spectral density dependence on the area of graphene channel showed that the dominant contributions to the low-frequency electronic noise come from the graphene layer itself rather than from the contacts. Aging of graphene transistors due to expo…
The unique property of bilayer graphene to show a band gap tunable by external electrical fields enables a variety of different device concepts with novel functionalities for electronic, optoelectronic and sensor applications. So far the operation of bilayer graphene based field effect transistors requires two individual gates to vary the channel's conductance and to create a band gap. In this paper we report on a method to increase the on/off ratio in single gated bilayer graphene field effect transistors by adsorbate doping. The adsorbate dopants on the upper side of the graphene establish a…
The atomic thickness of two-dimensional (2D) materials provides a unique opportunity to control material properties and engineer new functionalities by electrostatic doping. Electrostatic doping has been demonstrated to tune the electrical and optical properties of 2D materials in a wide range, as well as to drive the electronic phase transitions. The recent discovery of atomically thin magnetic insulators has opened up the prospect of electrical control of magnetism and new devices with unprecedented performance. Here we demonstrate control of the magnetic properties of monolayer and bilayer …
