We consider an interferometer based on artificially induced topological superconductivity and chiral 1D Majorana fermions. The (non-topological) superconducting island inducing the superconducting correlations in the topological substrate is assumed to be floating. This allows probing the physics of interfering Majorana modes via microwave response, i.e., the frequency dependent impedance between the island and the earth. Namely, charging and discharging of the island is controlled by the time-delayed interference of chiral Majorana excitations in both normal and Andreev channels. We argue that microwave measurements provide a direct way to observe the physics of 1D chiral Majorana modes.
We propose an interferometer for chiral Majorana modes where the interference effect is caused and controlled by a Josephson junction of proximity-induced topological superconductors, hence, a Majorana-Josephson interferometer. This interferometer is based on a two-terminal quantum anomalous Hall bar, and as such its transport observables exhibit interference patterns depending on both the Josephson phase and the junction length. Observing these interference patterns will establish quantum coherent Majorana transport and further provide a powerful characterization tool for the relevant system.
In the heterostructure composed of a topological insulator sandwiched by two s-wave superconductors, the time reversal invariant topological superconducting phase, possessing helical Majorana edge modes, is found to exist when the two s-wave superconductors form a Josephson junction with a pi phase shift. Based on such a heterostructure, a helical Dirac-Majorana interferometer is proposed to directly measure a unique transport signature of the helical Majorana modes. Furthermore, we envision how our proposal can be realized on the basis of existing materials such as Bi2Se3 or Bi2Te3 thin films…
We investigate theoretically the features of the Majorana hallmark in the presence of Coulomb repulsion between two quantum dots describing a spinless Aharonov-Bohm-like interferometer, where one of the dots is strongly coupled to a Kitaev wire within the topological phase. Such a system has been originally proposed without Coulomb interaction in J. of Appl. Phys. 116, 173701 (2014). Our findings reveal that for dots in resonance, the ratio between the strength of Coulomb repulsion and the dot-wire coupling changes the width of the Majorana zero-bias peak for both Fano regimes studied, indicat…
In this work, we investigate the conductance and current correlations properties of a quantum topological inteferometer consisting of a QD coupled to two Majorana Bound States (MBSs) confined at both ends of a 1D topological superconductor ring nanowire. We analyze the ring in its topological non trivial and trivial phases to show that the tunneling conductance, shot noise and fano factor present unique characteristics to distinguish the hallmark of MBSs. We reinforce our findings by taking advantage of the correspondence between the quantum topological interferometer and a dot effectively cou…
We propose an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer consisted of two topological superconducting chains (TSCs) to generate coherence of Majorana qubits, each qubit is made of two Majorana zero modes (MZMs) with the definite fermion parity. We obtain the generalized exact master equation as well as its solution and study the real-time dynamics of the MZM qubit states under various operations. We demonstrate that by tuning the magnetic flux, the decoherence rates can be modified significantly, and dissipationless MZMs can be generated. By applying the bias voltage to the leads, one can manipulate MZM qub…
The dynamics of a superconducting quantum point contact biased at subgap voltages is shown to be strongly affected by a microwave electromagnetic field. Interference among a sequence of temporally localized, microwave-induced Landau-Zener transitions between current carrying Andreev levels results in energy absorption and in an increase of the subgap current by several orders of magnitude. The contact is an interferometer in the sense that the current is an oscillatory function of the inverse bias voltage. Possible applications to Andreev-level spectroscopy and microwave detection are discusse…
We investigate the transport properties through a nanostructure composed of parallel double quantum dots coupled to two normal contacts. Additionally, each quantum dot is connected to a topological superconducting nanowire, hosting Majorana zero modes at its ends. A magnetic flux threading across the area enclosed by the interferometer is considered. First, we investigate the physical quantities of the system employing Green's function formalism. We find that the emergence of bound states appears in symmetric configurations of topological superconducting nanowires, i.e., depending on their len…
We find the admittance of a topological Josephson junction $Y(ω,φ_0, T)$ as a function of frequency $ω$, the static phase bias $φ_0$ applied to the superconducting leads, and temperature $T$. The dissipative part of $Y$ allows for spectroscopy of the sub-gap states in the junction. The resonant frequencies $ω_{\mathcal{M}, n} (φ_0)$ for transitions involving the Majorana ($\mathcal{M}$) doublet exhibit characteristic kinks in the $φ_0$-dependence at $φ_0=π$. The kinks -- associated with decoupled Majorana states -- remain sharp and the corresponding spectroscopic lines are bright at any temper…
Majorana zero modes are leading candidates for topological quantum computation due to non-local qubit encoding and non-abelian exchange statistics. Spatially separated Majorana modes are expected to allow phase-coherent single-electron transport through a topological superconducting island via a mechanism referred to as teleportation. Here we experimentally investigate such a system by patterning an elongated epitaxial InAs-Al island embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer. With increasing parallel magnetic field, a discrete sub-gap state in the island is lowered to zero energy yielding pe…
We study the full counting statistics of interferometers for chiral Majorana fermions with two incoming and two outgoing Dirac fermion channels. In the absence of interactions, the FCS can be obtained from the $4\times4$ scattering matrix $S$ that relates the outgoing Dirac fermions to the incoming Dirac fermions. After presenting explicit expressions for the higher-order current correlations for a modified Hanbury Brown-Twiss interferometer, we note that the cumulant-generating function can be interpreted such that unit-charge transfer processes correspond to two independent half-charge trans…
We study the transport properties of an interferometer composed by a quantum dot (QD) coupled with two normal leads and two one-dimensional topological superconductor nanowires (TNWs) hosting Majorana bound states (MBS) at their ends. The geometry considered is such that one TNW has both ends connected with the QD, forming an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer threaded by an external magnetic flux, while the other TNW is placed near the interferometer TNW. This geometry can alternatively be seen as a long wire contacted across a local defect, with possible coupling between independent-MBS. We u…
Motivated by the need of quantum measurement of Majorana qubits and surface-code stabilizers, we analyze the performance of a double-dot interferometer under the influence of environment noise. The double-dot setup design allows accounting for the full multiple tunneling process between the dots through the Majorana island, within a master equation approach. In the co-tunneling regime, which results in a Majorana-mediated effective coupling between the dots, the master equation approach allows us to obtain analytic solutions for the measurement currents. The measurement quality, characterized …

By driving a 3D transmon with microwave fields, we generate an effective avoided energy-level crossing. Then we chirp microwave frequency, which is equivalent to driving the system through the avoided energy-level crossing by sweeping the avoided crossing. A double-passage chirp produces Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana interference that agree well with the numerical results. Our method is fully applicable to other quantum systems that contain no intrinsic avoided level crossing, providing an alternative approach for quantum control and quantum simulation.
We investigate adiabatic quantum pumping of chiral Majorana states in a system composed of two Mach--Zehnder type interferometers coupled via a quantum point contact. The pumped current is generated by periodic modulation of the phases accumulated by traveling around each interferometer. Using scattering matrix formalism we show that the pumped current reveals a definite signature of the chiral nature of the Majorana states involved in transport in this geometry. Furthermore, by tuning the coupling between the two interferometers the pump can operate in a regime where finite pumped current and…

We propose microwave-controlled rotations for qubits realized as Majorana bound states. To this end we study an inhomogeneous Kitaev chain in a microwave cavity. The chain consists of two topologically nontrivial regions separated by a topologically trivial, gapped region. The Majorana bound states at the interfaces between the left (right) regions and the central region are coupled, and their energies are split by virtual cotunneling processes. The amplitude for these cotunneling processes decreases exponentially in the number of sites of the gapped region, and the decay length diverges as th…
A trijunction made of three topological semiconducting wires, each supporting a Majorana bound state at its two extremities, appears as one of the simplest geometry in order to perform braiding of Majorana fermions. By embedding the trijunction into a microwave cavity allows to study the intricate dynamics of the low-energy Majorana bound states (MBSs) coupled to the cavity electric field under a braiding operation. Extending a previous work (Phys. Rev. Lett. 2019, 122, 236803), the full time evolution of the density matrix of the low-energy states, including various relaxation channels, is co…
In modern experiments with hybrid superconducting (SC)/semiconducting nanowires the presence of zero-energy Andreev bound states (ABSs), characterized by a partial overlap of the Majorana wave functions, is a common problem that significantly complicates the detection of a genuine Majorana bound state (MBS). In this article, taking into account spatial inhomogeneity of experimentally investigated nanowire samples, we study interference transport features of a curved heterostructure in which two normal wires (or arms) are separated by a superconducting wire. Since Andreev reflection on the two …
Majorana bound states have been proposed as building blocks for qubits on which certain operations can be performed in a topologically protected way using braiding. However, the set of these protected operations is not sufficient to realize universal quantum computing. We show that the electric field in a microwave cavity can induce Rabi oscillations between adjacent Majorana bound states. These oscillations can be used to implement an additional single-qubit gate. Supplemented with one braiding operation, this gate allows to perform arbitrary single-qubit operations.
We study the interplay between Andreev (Majorana) bound states that form at the boundary of a (topological) superconductor and a train of microwave pulses. We find that the extra dynamical phase coming from the pulses can shift the phase of the Andreev reflection, resulting in the appear- ance of dynamical Andreev states. As an application we study the presence of the zero bias peak in the differential conductance of a normal-topological superconductor junction - the simplest, yet somehow ambiguous, experimental signature for Majorana states. Adding microwave radiation to the measuring electro…
Using scattering theory, we investigate interferometers composed of chiral Majorana fermion modes coupled to normal metal leads. We advance an approach in which also the basis states in the normal leads are written in terms of Majorana modes. Thus each pair of electron-hole states is associated with a pair of Majorana modes. Only one lead Majorana mode couples to the intrinsic Majorana mode whereas its partner is completely reflected. Similarly the remaining Majorana modes are completely reflected but in general mix pair-wise. We demonstrate that the charge current can also be expressed in ter…
We implemented experimentally an interferometer-type charge qubit consisting of a single-Cooper-pair transistor closed by a superconducting loop that is in flip-chip configuration inductively coupled to a radio frequency tank circuit. The tank permits to readout the qubit state, acting as inductance measuring apparatus. By applying continuous microwave power to the quantum device, we observed inductance alterations caused by redistributions of the energy level populations. From the measured data, we extracted the energy gap between ground and upper levels as a function of the transistor quasic…
We consider signatures of abelian and nonabelian quasiparticle statistics in quantum Hall Fabry-Perot interferometers. When quasiparticles enter and exit the interference cell, for instance due to glassy motion in the dopant layer, the anyonic phase can be observed in phase jumps. In the case of the nonabelian nu=5/2 state, if the interferometer is small, we argue that free Majorana states in the interference cell are either strongly coupled to one another or are strongly coupled to the edge. We analyze the expected phase jumps and in particular suggest that changes in the parity of the Majora…
No experiment could directly test the particle/antiparticle duality of Majorana fermions, so far. However, this property represents a necessary ingredient towards the realization of topological quantum computing schemes. Here, we show how to complete this task by using microwave techniques. The direct coupling between a pair of overlapping Majorana bound states and the electric field from a microwave cavity is extremely difficult to detect due to the self-adjoint character of Majorana fermions which forbids direct energy exchanges with the cavity. We show theoretically how this problem can be …
We present a Michelson-type microwave interferometer for use in ferromagnetic resonance experiments. The interferometer is capable of broadband operation without manual adjustment of phase delay or amplitude attenuation. A prototype of the design shows significant improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio when compared to non-interferometric ferromagnetic resonance experiments. We demonstrate that this increase in sensitivity can lead to a drastic increase in the data acquisition rate for hard-to-measure thin films that otherwise would require long integration times.
Coupling Majorana fermion excitations to coherent external fields is an important stage towards their manipulation and detection. We analyse the charge and transmon regimes of a topological nano-wire embedded within a Cooper-Pair-Box, where the superconducting phase difference is coupled to the zero energy parity states that arise from Majorana quasi-particles. We show that at special gate bias points, the photon-qubit coupling can be switched off via quantum interference, and in other points it is exponentially dependent on the control parameter $E_J/E_C$. As well as a probe for topological-s…
We describe here the implementation of an interferometer-based microwave impedance microscope on a home-built tuning-fork based scanning probe microscope (SPM). Tuning-fork based SPMs, requiring only two electrical contacts for self-actuation and self-detection of the tuning fork oscillation, are especially well suited to operation in extreme environments such as low temperatures, high magnetic fields or restricted geometries where the optical components required for conventional detection of cantilever deflection would be difficult to introduce. Most existing and commercially available system…
We study the spectrum of a one-dimensional Kitaev chain placed in a microwave cavity. In the off-resonant regime, the frequency shift of the cavity can be used to identify the topological phase transition of the coupled system. In the resonant regime, the topology of the system can be controlled via the microwave cavity occupation and, moreover, for a large number of photons (classical limit), the physics becomes similar to that of periodically-driven systems (Floquet insulators). We also analyze numerically a finite chain and show the existence of a degenerate subspace in the presence of the …
Majorana qubits offer a promising way to store and manipulate quantum information by encoding it into the state of Majorana zero modes. As the information is stored in a topological property of the system, local noise cannot lead to decoherence. Manipulation of the information is achieved by braiding the zero modes. The measurement, however, is challenging as the information is well hidden and thus inherently hard to access. Here, we discuss a setup for measuring the state of a Majorana qubit by employing standard tools of microwave engineering. The basic physical effect that we employ is the …
Coupling a semiconducting nanowire to a microwave cavity provides a powerfull means to assess the presence or absence of isolated Majorana fermions in the nanowire. These exotic bound states can cause a significant cavity frequency shift but also a strong cavity nonlinearity leading for instance to light squeezing. The dependence of these effects on the nanowire gate voltages gives direct signatures of the unique properties of Majorana fermions, such as their self-adjoint character and their exponential confinement.
We describe how microwave spectroscopy of cold fermions in quasi-1D traps can be used to detect, manipulate, and entangle exotic non-local qbits associated with "Majorana" edge modes. We present different approaches to generate the p-wave superfluidity which is responsible for these topological zero-energy edge modes. We find that the edge modes have clear signatures in the microwave spectrum, and that the line shape distinguishes between the degenerate states of a qbit encoded in these edge modes. Moreover, the microwaves rotate the system in its degenerate ground-state manifold. We use these…
We introduce a model of interacting Majorana fermions that describes a superconducting phase with a topological order characterized by the Fibonacci topological field theory. Our theory, which is based on a $SO(7)_1/(G_2)_1$ coset factorization, leads to a solvable one dimensional model that is extended to two dimensions using a network construction. In addition to providing a description of the Fibonacci phase without parafermions, our theory predicts a closely related "anti-Fibonacci" phase, whose topological order is characterized by the tricritical Ising model. We show that Majorana fermio…
We propose an experimental setup of an interferometer for the observation of neutral Majorana fermions on topological insulator - superconductor - ferromagnet junctions. We show that the extended lattice defects naturally present in materials, dislocations, induce spin currents on the edges while keeping the bulk time-reversal symmetry intact. We propose a simple two terminal conductance measurement in an interferometer formed by two edge point contacts, which reveals the nature of Majorana states through the effect of dislocations. The zero temperature magneto-conductance changes from even os…

We investigate the low-energy theory of a one-dimensional finite capacitance topological Josephson junction. Charge fluctuations across the junction couple to resonant microwave fields and can be used to probe microscopic excitations such as Majorana and Andreev bound states. This marriage between localized microscopic degrees of freedom and macroscopic dynamics of the superconducting phase, leads to unique spectroscopic patterns which allow us to reveal the presence of Majorana fermions among the low-lying excitations.
We study charge transport in a single-electron transistor implemented as an interferometer such that the Coulomb blockaded middle island contains a circular chiral Majorana or Dirac edge mode. We concentrate on the regime of small conductance and provide an asymptotic solution in the limit of high transport voltage exceeding the charging energy. The solution is achieved using an instanton-like technique. The distinctions between Majorana and Dirac cases appears when the tunnel junctions are unequal. The main difference is in the offset current at high voltages which can be higher up to $50\%$ …
We consider the surface states of a spherical topological insulator piecewise-terminated by superconductivity or ferromagnetism over various regions of the spherical surface. Such terminations gap the surface states by breaking U(1) particle-number symmetry or time-reversal symmetry, respectively. Interfaces and trijunctions between differently terminated surface regions can host propagating and bound Majorana modes, and the finite size of the spherical system makes it easily amenable to numerical analysis via exact diagonalization of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian within a truncated Hil…
We report the realization and investigation of a ballistic Andreev interferometer based on an InAs two dimensional electron gas coupled to a superconducting Nb loop. We observe strong magnetic modulations in the voltage drop across the device due to quasiparticle interference within the weak-link. The interferometer exhibits flux noise down to $\sim 80\, μΦ_0/\sqrt{\textrm{Hz}}$, and a robust behavior in temperature with voltage oscillations surviving up to $\sim7\,$K. Besides this remarkable performance, the device represents a crucial first step for the realization of a fully-tunable ballist…
The ability to detect single photons has become increasingly essential due to the rise of photon-based quantum computing. In this theoretical work, we propose a system consisting of a quantum dot (QD) side-coupled to a superconducting nanowire. The coupling opens a gap in both the QD mode and the Majorana zero mode (MZM) at the nanowire edge, enabling photon absorption in the system. We show that the absorbed photoelectron decays via rapid (sub-nanosecond to nanosecond) nonradiative heat transfer to the nanowire phonon modes rather than by spontaneous emission. Furthermore, we calculate the te…
We propose two experiments to probe the Majorana fermion edge states that occur at a junction between a superconductor and a magnet deposited on the surface of a topological insulator. Combining two Majorana fermions into a single Dirac fermion on a magnetic domain wall allows the neutral Majorana fermions to be probed with charge transport. We will discuss a novel interferometer for Majorana fermions, which probes their Z_2 phase. This setup also allows the transmission of neutral Majorana fermions through a point contact to be measured. We introduce a point contact formed by a superconductin…
We consider a Josephson contact mediated by 1D chiral modes on a surface of a 3D topological insulator with superimposed superconducting and magnetic layers. The system represents an interferometer in which 1D chiral Majorana modes on the boundaries of superconducting electrodes are linked by ballistic chiral Dirac channels. We investigate the noise of the Josephson current as a function of the dc phase bias and the Aharonov-Bohm flux. Starting from the scattering formalism, a Majorana representation of the Keldysh generating action for cumulants of the transmitted charge is found. At temperat…

We present a new measurement-based scheme for performing braiding operations on Majorana zero modes and for detecting their non-Abelian statistics without moving or hybridizing them. In our scheme, the topological qubit encoded in any pair of well-separated Majorana zero modes in a mesoscopic superconductor island is read out from the transmission phase shift in electron teleportation through the island in the Coulomb blockade regime. We propose experimental setups to measure the teleportation phase shift via conductance in an electron interferometer or persistent current in a closed loop.
We found that QED in the lowest eigenstate of the microwave-cavity, capacitively coupled with Majorana populated Josephson junctions array, is described with an effective $ϕ^{4}$ model emerging in the finite domain of the system parameters. Strong anharmonicity of the cavity mode arises due to electric-dipole phase transition facilitated by the single-electron zero mode and Cooper pair tunneling between superconducting islands. An instantonic meandering of the electromagnetic field potential at finite temperatures is predicted.
We predict conductance oscillations in a quantum-anomalous Hall 2d strip having a superconducting region of length $L_x$ with a chiral Majorana mode. These oscillations require a finite transverse extension of the strip $L_y$ of a few microns or less. Measuring the conductance periodicity with $L_x$ and a fixed bias, or with bias and a fixed $L_x$, yields the speed of the chiral Majorana mode. The physical mechanism behind the oscillations is the interference between backscattered chiral modes from second to first interface of the NSN double junction. The interferometer effect is enhanced by t…
We report the realization of a ballistic Josephson interferometer. The interferometer is made by a quantum ring etched in a nanofabricated two-dimensional electron gas confined in an InAs-based heterostructure laterally contacted to superconducting niobium leads. The Josephson current flowing through the structure shows oscillations with h/e flux periodicity when threading the loop with a perpendicular magnetic field. This periodicity, in sharp contrast with the h/2e one observed in conventional dc superconducting quantum interference devices, confirms the ballistic nature of the device in agr…
We show that the microwave (MW) spectra in semiconductor-nanowire-based transmon qubits provide a strong signature of the presence of Majorana bound states in the junction. This occurs as an external magnetic field tunes the wire into the topological regime and the energy splitting of the emergent Majorana modes oscillates around zero energy owing to their wave function spatial overlap in finite-length wires. In particular, we discuss how these Majorana oscillations, and the concomitant fermion parity switches in the ground state of the junction, result in distinct spectroscopic features --in …
The superconducting proximity effect in semiconductor nanowires has recently enabled the study of new superconducting architectures, such as gate-tunable superconducting qubits and multiterminal Josephson junctions. As opposed to their metallic counterparts, the electron density in semiconductor nanosystems is tunable by external electrostatic gates providing a highly scalable and in-situ variation of the device properties. In addition, semiconductors with large $g$-factor and spin-orbit coupling have been shown to give rise to exotic phenomena in superconductivity, such as $φ_0$ Josephson jun…
We consider microwave spectroscopy of Josephon junctions composed of hybridized Majorana states in topological 1-D superconductors. We point out how spectroscopic features of the junction appear in the current phase relation under microwave irradiation. Moreover, we discuss a way to directly probe the nonequilibrium state associated with the 4π periodic Josephson effect. In particular, we show how the microwave driving can be used to switch from a 4π to a 2π Shapiro step in the current voltage relation.
