The kinematics on spatially flat FLRW space-times is presented for the first time in co-moving local charts with physical coordinates, i. e. the cosmic time and Painlev\' e-type Cartesian space coordinates. It is shown that there exists a conserved momentum which determines the form of the covariant four-momentum on geodesics in terms of physical coordinates. Moreover, with the help of the conserved momentum one identifies the peculiar momentum separating the peculiar and recessional motions without ambiguities. It is shown that the energy and peculiar momentum satisfy the mass-shell condition of special relativity while the recessional momentum does not produce energy. In this framework, the measurements of the kinetic quantities along geodesic performed by different observers are analysed pointing out an energy loss of the massive particles similar to that giving the photon redshift. The examples of the kinematics on the de Sitter expanding universe and a new Milne-type space-time are extensively analysed.
In quantum theory of the free Dirac field on spatially flat FLRW spacetimes we introduce a new type of vacuum able to separate the positive and negative frequencies in the rest frames. This is refereed as the rest frame vacuum shoving that this differs from the adiabatic vacuum apart from the Minkowski spacetime where these two vacua coincide.
The quantum electrodynamics (QED) on a spatially flat $(1+3)$-dimensional Friedmann-Lema\^ itre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetime with a Milne-type scale factor is outlined focusing on the amplitudes of the allowed effects in the first order of perturbations. The definition of the transition rates is reconsidered obtaining an appropriate angular behavior of the probability of the pair creation from a photon.
The general formalism of the free Dirac fermions on spatially flat $(1+3)$-dimensional Friedmann-Lema\^ itre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetimes is developed in momentum representation. The mode expansions in terms of the fundamental spinors satisfying the charge conjugation and normalization conditions are used for deriving the structure of the anti-commutator matrix-functions and, implicitly, of the retarded, advanced, and Feynman fermion propagators. The principal result is that the new type of integral representation we proposed recently in the de Sitter case can be applied to the Dirac fer…
The framework of the relativistic quantum mechanics on spatially flat FLRW space-times is considered for deriving the analytical solutions of the Dirac equation in different local charts of these manifolds. Systems of commuting conserved operators are used for determining the fundamental solutions as common eigenspinors giving thus physical meaning to the integration constants related to the eigenvalues of these operators. Since these systems, in general, are incomplete on the FLRW space-times there are integration constants that must be fixed by setting the vacuum either as the traditional ad…
We study the spatially homogeneous relativistic Boltzmann equation for massless particles in an FLRW background with scattering kernels in a certain range of soft and hard potentials. We obtain the future global existence of small solutions in a weighted $L^1\cap L^\infty$ space.
We propose a method of projecting the quantum states from a state space of a given geometry into another state space generated by a different geometry, taking care on the correct normalization which is crucial in interpreting the quantum theory. Thanks to this method we can define on any spatially flat FLRW spacetime states in which genuine Minkowskian parameters are measured. We use these Minkowskian states for separating the frequencies in the rest frames of the massive scalar particles defining thus the scalar rest frame vacuum. We show that this vacuum is stable on the de Sitter expanding …
Future stability of expanding spatially homogeneous FLRW solutions of the spherically symmetric Einstein--massless Vlasov system with spatial topology $\mathbb{R}^3$
New spherical scalar modes on the expanding part of Sitter spacetime, eigenfunctions of a conserved Hamiltonian-like operator are found by solving the Klein-Gordon equation in the appropriate coordinate chart, with the help of a time evolution picture technique specially developed for spatially flat FLRW charts. Transition coefficients are computed between these modes and the rest of the scalar spherical and plane wave modes, either momentum or energy eigenfunctions on the spatially flat FLRW chart.
We present a dynamical analysis of the (classical) spatially flat and negative curved Friedmann-Lameitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) universes evolving, (by assumption) close to the thermodynamic equilibrium, in presence of a particles creation process, described by means of a realiable phenomenological approach, based on the application to the comoving volume (i. e. spatial volume of unit comoving coordinates) of the theory for open thermodynamic systems. In particular we show how, since the particles creation phenomenon induces a negative pressure term, then the choice of a well-grounded ansatz …
We investigate an interacting two-fluid model in a spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) Universe, when the energy transfer between these two dark components is produced by a factorisable nonlinear sign-changeable interaction depending linearly on the energy density and quadratically on the deceleration parameter. We solve the source equation and obtain the effective energy densities of the dark sector and their components. We show that the effective equation of state of the dark sector includes some of the several kind of Chaplygin gas equations of state as well as a gener…
We study a Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) space-time in the theory of $f(Q)$-gravity, where $Q$ denotes the non-metricity scalar. It has been previously shown in the literature, that there exist four distinct families of connections, which are compatible with the isometries of the FLRW metric; three for the spatially flat case and one when the spatial curvature is present. In the spatially flat case, one connection is dynamically irrelevant and yields the dynamics of the coincident gauge in the Cartesian coordinates. For this, we obtain the general solution of an arbitrary $f(Q)$…
This work was mainly driven by the desire to explore, to what extent embedding some given geometry in a higher dimensional flat one is useful for understanding the causal structure of classical fields traveling in the former, in terms of that in the latter. We point out, in the 4D spatially flat FLRW universe, that the causal structure of transverse-traceless (TT) gravitational waves can be elucidated by first reducing the problem to a 2D Minkowski wave equation with a time dependent potential, where the relevant Green's function is pure tail -- waves produced by a physical source propagate st…
Exploiting the existence of two "cosmological" constants, one associated with the classical Lovelock theorem and one with the vacuum energy density, we argue, in a model independent way, that in spatially closed FLRW cosmologies with a positive definite effective cosmological constant there exists a range in this constant that serves as a sufficient condition for the satisfaction of the null, weak, strong and dominant energy conditions at a bounce. The application of energy conditions is not unambiguous and we show how the bounce can be considered classically and how, we believe more reasonabl…
The present matter density of the Universe, while highly inhomogeneous on small scales, displays approximate homogeneity on large scales. We propose that whereas it is justified to use the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) line element (which describes an exactly homogeneous and isotropic universe) as a template to construct luminosity distances in order to compare observations with theory, the evolution of the scale factor in such a construction must be governed not by the standard Einstein equations for the FLRW metric, but by the modified Friedmann equations derived by Buchert [7, …
In a recent series of papers Endean examines the properties of spatially homogeneous and isotropic (FLRW) cosmological models filled with dust in the ``conformally flat spacetime presentation of cosmology'' (CFS cosmology). This author claims it is possible to resolve a certain number of the difficulties the standard model exhibits when confronted to observations, if the theoretical predictions are obtained in the special framework of CFS cosmology. As a by-product of his analysis Endean claims that no initial (big-bang) nor final (big-crunch) singularities occur in the closed FLRW model. In t…
We investigate the asymptotia of decelerating and spatially flat FLRW spacetimes at future null infinity. We find that the asymptotic algebra of diffeomorphisms can be enlarged to the recently discovered Weyl-BMS algebra for asymptotically flat spacetimes by relaxing the boundary conditions. This algebra remains undeformed in the cosmological setting contrary to previous extensions of the BMS algebra. We then study the equations of motion for asymptotically FLRW spacetimes with finite fluxes and show that the dynamics is fully constrained by the energy-momentum tensor of the source. Finally, w…
We prove a stable singularity formation result for solutions to the Einstein-scalar field and Einstein-stiff fluid systems. Our results apply to small perturbations of the spatially flat FLRW solution with topology $(0,\infty) \times \mathbb{T}^3.$ The FLRW solution models a spatially uniform scalar-field/stiff fluid evolving in a spacetime that expands towards the future and that has a "Big Bang" singularity at $\lbrace 0 \rbrace \times \mathbb{T}^3,$ where its curvature blows up. We place data on a Cauchy hypersurface $Σ_1'$ that are close to the FLRW data induced on $\lbrace 1 \rbrace \time…
McVittie spacetimes embed the vacuum Schwarzschild(-(anti) de Sitter) spacetime in an isotropic FLRW background universe. We study the global structure of McVittie spacetimes with spatially non-flat FLRW backgrounds. This requires the extension of the definition of such spacetimes, previously given only for the flat and open cases, to the closed case. We revisit this definition and show how it gives rise to a unique spacetime (given the FLRW background, the mass parameter $M$ and the cosmological constant $Λ$) in the open and flat cases. In the closed case, an additional free function of the c…
In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic structure of gauge theories in decelerating and spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universes. Firstly, we thoroughly explore the asymptotic symmetries of electrodynamics in this background, which reveals a major inconsistency already present in the flat case. Taking advantage of this treatment, we derive the associated memory effects, discussing their regime of validity and differences with respect to their flat counterparts. Next, we extend our analysis to non-Abelian Yang-Mills, coupling it dynamically and simultaneously to a Dirac…
In this paper, we extend the treatment of asymptotically decelerating spatially flat FLRW spacetimes initiated in [1]. We show that a certain class of those metrics is ruled by the asymptotic algebra $\mathfrak{b}\mathfrak{m}\mathfrak{s}_s$, which belongs to a one-parameter family of deformations of $\mathfrak{b}\mathfrak{m}\mathfrak{s}$. Furthermore, we enlarge our ansatz to include $\text{Diff}(S^2)$ transformations whose asymptotic algebra $\mathfrak{g}\mathfrak{b}\mathfrak{m}\mathfrak{s}_s$ is a one parameter deformation of $\mathfrak{g}\mathfrak{b}\mathfrak{m}\mathfrak{s}$. Therefore, the…
The fundamental singularity theorem of FLRW cosmologies assumes that the matter content in the cosmological model obeys the strong energy condition along with a nonpositive cosmological constant which gives rise to an irrotational geodesic singularity. In this paper, we show that the important case of a spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universe with barotropic matter obeying only the \emph{weak} energy condition with a nonnegative cosmological constant also contains a past singularity. We accomplish this using topological methods from dynamical systems theory. The methods emp…
In the context of theories of Kaluza-Klein type, with a large extra dimension, we study self-similar cosmological models in 5D that are homogeneous, anisotropic and spatially flat. The "ladder" to go between the physics in 5D and 4D is provided by Campbell-Maagard's embedding theorems. We show that the 5-dimensional field equations $R_{AB} = 0$ determine the form of the similarity variable. There are three different possibilities: homothetic, conformal and "wave-like" solutions in 5D. We derive the most general homothetic and conformal solutions to the 5D field equations. They require the extr…
Geodesics are used in a wide array of applications in cosmology and astrophysics. However, it is not a trivial task to efficiently calculate exact geodesic distances in an arbitrary spacetime. We show that in spatially flat (3+1)-dimensional Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetimes, it is possible to integrate the second-order geodesic differential equations, and derive a general method for finding both timelike and spacelike distances given initial-value or boundary-value constraints. In flat spacetimes with either dark energy or matter, whether dust, radiation, or a stiff fluid,…
In this paper, we consider spatially flat FLRW cosmological models in two contexts in an attempt to derive a set of conditions that characterize when such models exhibit oscillatory behaviour. In the first case, we consider a spatially flat FLRW model with only a minimally-coupled scalar field, described by a nonnegative scalar field potential. In the second case, we extended this model to include barotropic matter. We show that for the case of a positive cosmological constant, spatial flatness, and barotropic matter, oscillatory solutions are certainly possible. However, these solutions do no…
In this paper we present the techniques for computing cosmological bounces in polynomial $f(R)$ theories, whose order is more than two, for spatially flat FLRW spacetime. In these cases the conformally connected Einstein frame shows up multiple scalar potentials predicting various possibilities of cosmological evolution in the Jordan frame where the $f(R)$ theory lives. We present a reasonable way in which one can associate the various possible potentials in the Einstein frame, for cubic $f(R)$ gravity, to the cosmological development in the Jordan frame. The issue concerning the energy condit…
We investigate the dynamics of the spatially flat universes submitted to isotropic tidal forces and adiabatic expansion under Einstein's equations. Surprisingly, the tendency to a high Hubble anisotropy at late times starts to appear as far as we assume the strong energy condition, a characteristic which becomes dominant in the radiation era and even more stringent under a stiff matter regime. We introduce the parameter b which measures the relative change in the magnitudes of the Hubble anisotropy and the scale factor and use it to show that the anisotropies must be kept small as long as we a…
We construct the quantum mechanical evolution operator in the Functional Schrodinger picture - the kernel - for a scalar field in spatially homogeneous FLRW spacetimes when the field is a) free and b) coupled to a spacetime dependent source term. The essential element in the construction is the causal propagator, linked to the commutator of two Heisenberg picture scalar fields. We show that the kernels can be expressed solely in terms of the causal propagator and derivatives of the causal propagator. Furthermore, we show that our kernel reveals the standard light cone structure in FLRW spaceti…
We study the dissipation of oscillating scalar backgrounds in a spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universe using non-equilibrium quantum field theory. To be concrete, a $Z_2$-symmetric two-scalar model with quartic interactions is used. For quasi-harmonic oscillations, we adopt the multi-scale analysis to obtain analytical approximate expressions for the evolution of the scalar background in terms of the retarded self-energy and retarded proper four-vertex function. Different from the case in flat spacetime, we find that in an expanding universe the condensate decay in this mo…

We study the asymptotic dynamics of $f(T, B)$-theory in an anisotropic Bianchi III background geometry. We show that an attractor always exists for the field equations, which depends on a free parameter provided by the specific $f(T, B)$ functional form. The attractor is an accelerated spatially flat FLRW or non-accelerated LRS Bianchi III geometry. Consequently, the $f(T, B)$-theory provides a spatially flat and isotropic accelerated Universe.
We prove nonlinear Lyapunov stability of a family of `$n+1$'-dimensional cosmological models of general relativity locally isometric to the Friedman Lemaître Robertson Walker (FLRW) spacetimes including a positive cosmological constant. In particular, we show that the perturbed solutions to the Einstein-Euler field equations around a class of spatially compact FLRW metrics (for which the spatial slices are compact negative Einstein spaces in general and hyperbolic for the physically relevant $n=3$ case) arising from regular Cauchy data remain uniformly bounded and decay to a family of metrics …
We investigate the effect of peculiar velocities of inhomogeneities and the spatial curvature of the universe on the shape of the gravitational potential. To this end, we consider scalar perturbations of the FLRW metric. The gravitational potential satisfies a Helmholtz-type equation which follows from the system of linearized Einstein equations. We obtain analytical solutions of this equation in the cases of open and closed universes, filled with cold dark matter in presence of the cosmological constant. We demonstrate that, first, peculiar velocities significantly affect the screening length…
We sketch a particularly simple and compelling version of D-brane cosmology. Inspired by the semi-phenomenological Randall--Sundrum models, and their cosmological generalizations, we develop a variant that contains a single (3+1)-dimensional D-brane which is located on the boundary of a single bulk (4+1)-dimensional region. The D-brane boundary is itself to be interpreted as our visible universe, with ordinary matter (planets, stars, galaxies) being trapped on this D-brane by string theory effects. The (4+1)-dimensional bulk is, in its simplest implementation, adS_{4+1}, anti-de Sitter space. …
I describe the logical basis of the method that I developed in 1962 and 1963 to define a quantum operator corresponding to the observable particle number of a quantized free scalar field in a spatially-flat isotropically expanding (and/or contracting) universe. This work also showed for the first time that particles were created from the vacuum by the curved space-time of an expanding spatially-flat FLRW universe. The same process is responsible for creating the nearly scale-invariant spectrum of quantized perturbations of the inflaton scalar field during the inflationary stage of the expansio…
In the context of $f\left( R\right) $-gravity with a spatially flat FLRW metric containing an ideal fluid, we use the method of invariant transformations to specify families of models which are integrable. We find three families of $f(R)$ theories for which new analytical solutions are given and closed-form solutions are provided.
The dissipative dynamics of an expanding massless gas with constant cross section in a spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) universe is studied. The mathematical problem of solving the full nonlinear relativistic Boltzmann equation is recast into an infinite set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations for the moments of the one-particle distribution function. Momentum-space resolution is determined by the number of non-hydrodynamic modes included in the moment hierarchy, i.e., by the truncation order. We show that in the FLRW spacetime the non-hydrodynamic modes decou…
No. It is simply not plausible that cosmic acceleration could arise within the context of general relativity from a back-reaction effect of inhomogeneities in our universe, without the presence of a cosmological constant or ``dark energy.'' We point out that our universe appears to be described very accurately on all scales by a Newtonianly perturbed FLRW metric. (This assertion is entirely consistent with the fact that we commonly encounter $δρ/ρ> 10^{30}$.) If the universe is accurately described by a Newtonianly perturbed FLRW metric, then the back-reaction of inhomogeneities on the dynamic…
Simply-connected homogeneous spacetimes for kinematical and aristotelian Lie algebras (with space isotropy) have recently been classified in all dimensions. In this paper, we continue the study of these "maximally symmetric" spacetimes by investigating their local geometry. For each such spacetime and relative to exponential coordinates, we calculate the (infinitesimal) action of the kinematical symmetries, paying particular attention to the action of the boosts, showing in almost all cases that they act with generic non-compact orbits. We also calculate the soldering form, the associated viel…
