We investigate the effect of peculiar velocities of inhomogeneities and the spatial curvature of the universe on the shape of the gravitational potential. To this end, we consider scalar perturbations of the FLRW metric. The gravitational potential satisfies a Helmholtz-type equation which follows from the system of linearized Einstein equations. We obtain analytical solutions of this equation in the cases of open and closed universes, filled with cold dark matter in presence of the cosmological constant. We demonstrate that, first, peculiar velocities significantly affect the screening length of the gravitational interaction and, second, the form of the gravitational potential depends on the sign of the spatial curvature.
In dynamic spacetimes in which asymmetric gravitational collapse/expansion is taking place, the timelike geodesic equation appears to exhibit an interesting property: Relative to the collapsing configuration, free test particles undergo gravitational "acceleration" and form a double-jet configuration parallel to the axis of collapse. We illustrate this aspect of peculiar motion in simple spatially homogeneous cosmological models such as the Kasner spacetime. To estimate the effect of spatial inhomogeneities on cosmic jets, timelike geodesics in the Ricci-flat double-Kasner spacetime are studie…
Using methods developed in Quantum Field Theory in curved space we can estimate the effects of the inhomogeneities and of a non vanishing velocity on the depletion of a Bose Einstein condensate within the hydrodynamical approximation.
We consider the Universe at the late stage of its evolution and deep inside the cell of uniformity. At such scales, the Universe is highly inhomogeneous and is filled with inhomogeneities in the form of galaxies and the groups of galaxies. We also suggest that the Universe is filled with a perfect fluid, and its fluctuations have peculiar velocities of the same (non-relativistic) order of magnitude as for the inhomogeneities. In this sense, the inhomogeneities (e.g. galaxies) and fluctuations of perfect fluids are coupled with each other. We clarify some important points of this approach and p…
We study an effect of inhomogeneity of density distribution of the Universe. We propose a new Lagrangian perturbation theory with a backreaction effect by inhomogeneity. The inhomogeneity affects the expansion rate in a local domain and its own growing rate. We numerically analyze a one-dimensional plane-symmetric model, and calculate the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of several observed variables to discuss those statistical properties. We find that the PDF of pairwise peculiar velocity shows an effective difference from the conventional Lagrangian approach, i.e. even in one-dimen…
For the first time we calculate quantitatively the influence of inhomogeneities on the global expansion factor by averaging the Friedmann equation. In the framework of the relativistic second-order Zel'dovich-approximation scheme for irrotational dust we use observational results in form of the normalisation constant fixed by the COBE results and we check different power spectra, namely for adiabatic CDM, isocurvature CDM, HDM, WDM, Strings and Textures. We find that the influence of the inhomogeneities on the global expansion factor is very small. So the error in determining the age of the un…
Inflation provides a natural mechanism to account for the origin of cosmic structures. The generation of primordial inhomogeneities during inflation can be understood via the spontaneous creation of quanta from the vacuum. We show that when the corresponding {\it stimulated} creation of quanta is considered, the characteristics of the state of the universe at the onset of inflation are not diluted by the inflationary expansion and can be imprinted in the spectrum of primordial inhomogeneities. The non-gaussianities (particularly in the so-called squeezed configuration) in the cosmic microwave …
The first objective of this thesis is to fill the lack in cosmology of a description on the past light cone: the null hypersurface on which observed signals propagate. Its second goal is to evaluate the importance of inhomogeneities in the determination of dark energy parameters, whose real nature is still unknown and for which the influence of matter structures has been proposed as a cosmological alternative. We start with the definition of a "geodesic lightcone" gauge simplifying greatly the study of light propagation in the Universe. We then define a gauge invariant average of scalars on th…
We study effects of inhomogeneities on distance measures in an exact relativistic Swiss-cheese model of the universe, focusing on the distance modulus. The model has LCDM background dynamics, and the `holes' are non-symmetric structures described by the Szekeres metric. The Szekeres exact solution of Einstein's equations, which is inhomogeneous and anisotropic, allows us to capture potentially relevant effects on light propagation due to nontrivial evolution of structures in an exact framework. Light beams traversing a single Szekeres structure in different ways can experience either magnifica…

We consider the Universe deep inside the cell of uniformity. At these scales, the Universe is filled with inhomogeneously distributed discrete structures (galaxies, groups and clusters of galaxies), which perturb the background Friedmann model. Here, the mechanical approach (Eingorn & Zhuk, 2012) is the most appropriate to describe the dynamics of the inhomogeneities which is defined, on the one hand, by gravitational potentials of inhomogeneities and, on the other hand, by the cosmological expansion of the Universe. In this paper, we present additional arguments in favor of this approach. Fir…
In this paper, we consider the Universe at the late stage of its evolution and deep inside the cell of uniformity. At these scales, we consider the Universe to be filled with dust-like matter in the form of discretely distributed galaxies, a minimally coupled scalar field and radiation as matter sources. We investigate such a Universe in the mechanical approach. This means that the peculiar velocities of the inhomogeneities (in the form of galaxies) as well as fluctuations of other perfect fluids are non-relativistic. Such fluids are designated as coupled because they are concentrated around i…
We study a class of inhomogeneous and anisotropic $G_2$ string cosmological models. In the case of separable $G_2$ models we show that the governing equations reduce to a system of ordinary differential equations. We focus on a class of separable $G_2$ M-theory cosmological models, and study their qualitative behaviour (a class of models with time-reversed dynamics is also possible). We find that generically these inhomogeneous M-theory cosmologies evolve from a spatially inhomogeneous and negatively curved model with a non-trivial form field towards spatially flat and spatially homogeneous di…
The solutions of many issues, of the ongoing efforts to make deformed graphene a tabletop quantum field theory in curved spacetimes, are presented. A detailed explanation of the special features of curved spacetimes, originating from embedding portions of the Lobachevsky plane into $\mathbf{R}^3$, is given, and the special role of coordinates for the physical realizations in graphene, is explicitly shown, in general, and for various examples. The Rindler spacetime is reobtained, with new important differences with respect to earlier results. The de Sitter spacetime naturally emerges, for the f…
This thesis tackles the vast question of generating accelerated periods of expansion of the universe. Models loosely related were developed in the early and late universe. In the early universe, generalizations of the Schwinger effect were developed in curved (de Sitter) space and some backreaction effects were estimated. In the late universe, a fractal model was developed and confronted to supernovae data. This relies on the idea of an accelerated expanding universe being nothing but a mirage due to inhomogeneities disposed in a fractal (in this particular model) way. Finally a model of inter…
Idealizing matter as a pressureless fluid and representing its motion by a peculiar--velocity field superimposed on a homogeneous and isotropic Hubble expansion, we apply (Lagrangian) spatial averaging on an arbitrary domain $\cal D$ to the (nonlinear) equations of Newtonian cosmology and derive an exact, general equation for the evolution of the (domain dependent) scale factor $a_{\cal D}(t)$. We consider the effect of inhomogeneities on the average expansion and discuss under which circumstances the standard description of the average motion in terms of Friedmann's equation holds. We find th…
The measurements of the Hubble constant reveal a tension between high-redshift (CMB) and low-redshift (distance ladder) constraints. So far neither observational systematics nor new physics has been successfully implemented to explain this tension away. This paper present a new solution to the Hubble constant problem. The solution is based on the Simsilun simulation (relativistic simulation of the large scale structure of the Universe) with the ray-tracing algorithm implemented. The initial conditions for the Simsilun simulation were set up as perturbations around the $Λ$CDM model. However, un…
