We study the temporal evolution of the circuit complexity for a subsystem in harmonic lattices after a global quantum quench of the mass parameter, choosing the initial reduced density matrix as the reference state. Upper and lower bounds are derived for the temporal evolution of the complexity for the entire system. The subsystem complexity is evaluated by employing the Fisher information geometry for the covariance matrices. We discuss numerical results for the temporal evolutions of the subsystem complexity for a block of consecutive sites in harmonic chains with either periodic or Dirichlet boundary conditions, comparing them with the temporal evolutions of the entanglement entropy. For infinite harmonic chains, the asymptotic value of the subsystem complexity is studied through the generalised Gibbs ensemble.
We study the temporal evolution of the circuit complexity after the local quench where two harmonic chains are suddenly joined, choosing the initial state as the reference state. We discuss numerical results for the complexity for the entire chain and the subsystem complexity for a block of consecutive sites, obtained by exploiting the Fisher information geometry of the covariance matrices. The qualitative behaviour of the temporal evolutions of the subsystem complexity depends on whether the joining point is inside the subsystem. The revivals and a logarithmic growth observed during these tem…
Global quantum quench with a finite quench rate which crosses critical points is known to lead to universal scaling of correlation functions as functions of the quench rate. In this work, we explore scaling properties of the entanglement entropy of a subsystem in a harmonic chain during a mass quench which asymptotes to finite constant values at early and late times and for which the dynamics is exactly solvable. When the initial state is the ground state, we find that for large enough subsystem sizes the entanglement entropy becomes independent of size. This is consistent with Kibble-Zurek sc…
We investigate the time evolution of the subsystem trace distance and Schatten distances after local operator quenches in two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) and in one-dimensional quantum spin chains. We focus on the case of a subsystem being an interval embedded in the infinite line. The initial state is prepared by inserting a local operator in the ground state of the theory. We only consider the cases in which the inserted local operator is a primary field or a sum of several primaries. While a nonchiral primary operator can excite both left-moving and right-moving quasiparticles,…
In this paper, we study how quantum correlation between subsystems changes in time by investigating time evolution of mutual information and logarithmic negativity in two protocols of mass quench. Hamiltonian in both protocols is for 2-dimensional free scalar theory with time-dependent mass: the mass in one case decreases monotonically and vanishes asymptotically (ECP), and that in the other decreases monotonically before t = 0, but increases monotonically afterward, and becomes constant asymptotically (CCP). We study the time evolution of the quantum correlations under those protocols in two …

We study the time evolution of the entanglement entropy after quantum quenches in Lifshitz free scalar theories, with the dynamical exponent $z>1$, by using the correlator method. For quantum quenches we consider two types of time-dependent mass functions: end-critical-protocol (ECP) and cis-critical-protocol (CCP). In both cases, at early times the entanglement entropy is independent of the subsystem size. After a critical time ($t_c$), the entanglement entropy starts depending on the subsystem size significantly. This critical time $t_c$ for $z = 1$ in the fast ECP and CCP has been explained…
I investigate some properties of proposed definitions for subsystem/mixed state complexity and uncomplexity. A very strong dependence arises on the density matrix's degeneracy which gives a large separation in the scaling of maximum subsystem complexity with number of qubits (linear compared to exponential). I also investigate several cases where the uncomplexity of quantum states are superadditive and present some challenges and progress in showing that the relation holds in complete generality.
Using a recent proposal of circuit complexity in quantum field theories introduced by Jefferson and Myers, we compute the time evolution of the complexity following a smooth mass quench characterized by a time scale $δt$ in a free scalar field theory. We show that the dynamics has two distinct phases, namely an early regime of approximately linear evolution followed by a saturation phase characterized by oscillations around a mean value. The behavior is similar to previous conjectures for the complexity growth in chaotic and holographic systems, although here we have found that the complexity …
We apply the recently developed notion of complexity for field theory to a quantum quench through a critical point in 1+1 dimensions. We begin with a toy model consisting of a quantum harmonic oscillator, and show that complexity exhibits universal scalings in both the slow and fast quench regimes. We then generalize our results to a 1-dimensional harmonic chain, and show that preservation of these scaling behaviours in free field theory depends on the choice of norm. Applying our set-up to the case of two oscillators, we quantify the complexity of purification associated to a subregion, and d…
Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) is a concrete solvable model with non-Fermi liquid behavior and maximal chaos. In this work, we study the entanglement Rényi entropy for the subsystems of the SYK model in the Kourkoulou-Maldacena states. We use the path-integral approach and take the saddle point approximation in the large-$N$ limit. We find a first-order transition exist when tuning the subsystem size for the $q=4$ case, while it is absent for the $q=2$ case. We further study the entanglement dynamics for such states under the real-time evolution for noninteracting, weakly interacting and strongly int…
The study of the entanglement dynamics plays a fundamental role in understanding the behaviour of many-body quantum systems out of equilibrium. In the presence of a globally conserved charge, further insights are provided by the knowledge of the resolution of entanglement in the various symmetry sectors. Here, we carry on the program we initiated in [Phys. Rev. B 103, L041104 (2021)], for the study of the time evolution of the symmetry resolved entanglement in free fermion systems. We complete and extend our derivations also by defining and quantifying a symmetry resolved mutual information. T…
We study the evolution of holographic complexity of pure and mixed states in $1+1$-dimensional conformal field theory following a local quench using both the "complexity equals volume" (CV) and the "complexity equals action" (CA) conjectures. We compare the complexity evolution to the evolution of entanglement entropy and entanglement density, discuss the Lloyd computational bound and demonstrate its saturation in certain regimes. We argue that the conjectured holographic complexities exhibit some non-trivial features indicating that they capture important properties of what is expected to be …
We investigate the evolution of complexity and entanglement following a quench in a one-dimensional topological system, namely the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We demonstrate that complexity can detect quantum phase transitions and shows signatures of revivals; this observation provides a practical advantage in information processing. We also show that the complexity saturates much faster than the entanglement entropy in this system, and we provide a physical argument for this. Finally, we demonstrate that complexity is a less sensitive probe of topological order, compared with measures of enta…
The rate of complexification of a quantum state is conjectured to be bounded from above by the average energy of the state. A different conjecture relates the complexity of a holographic CFT state to the on-shell gravitational action of a certain bulk region. We use 'complexity equals action' conjecture to study the time evolution of the complexity of the CFT state after a global quench. We find that the rate of growth of complexity is not only consistent with the conjectured bound, but it also saturates the bound soon after the system has achieved local equilibrium.
In this work, we explore the effects of a quantum quench on the circuit complexity for a quenched quantum field theory having weakly coupled quartic interaction. We use the invariant operator method, under a perturbative framework, for computing the ground state of this system}. We give the analytical expressions for specific reference and target states using the ground state of the system. Using a particular cost functional, we show the analytical computation of circuit complexity for the quenched and interacting field theory. Further, we give a numerical estimate of circuit complexity with r…

We investigate equilibration and generalized thermalization of the quantum Harmonic chain under local quantum quench. The quench action we consider is connecting two disjoint harmonic chains of different sizes and the system jumps between two integrable settings. We verify the validity of the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble description for this infinite dimensional Hilbert space system and also identify equilibration between the subsystems as in classical systems. Using Bogoliubov transformations, we show that the eigenstates of the system prior to the quench evolve towards the Gibbs Generalized En…
By using a recent approach proposed by Hackl $et\, al.$ to evaluate the complexity of the free fermionic Gaussian state, we compute the complexity of the Dirac vacuum state as well as the excited state of the Fermi system with a mass quench. First of all, we review the counting method given by Hackl $et\, al.$, and demonstrate that the result can be adapted to all of the compact transformation group $G$. Then, we utilize this result to study the time evolution of the complexity of these states. We show that, for the rotational invariant reference state, the total complexity of the incoming vac…
This paper is devoted to the study of the evolution of holographic complexity after a local perturbation of the system at finite temperature. We calculate the complexity using both the complexity=action(CA) and the complexity=volume(CA) conjectures and find that the CV complexity of the total state shows the unbounded late time linear growth. The CA computation shows linear growth with fast saturation to a constant value. We estimate the CV and CA complexity linear growth coefficients and show, that finite temperature leads to violation of the Lloyd bound for CA complexity. Also it is shown th…
We compute the ultraviolet divergences of holographic subregion complexity for the left and right factors of the thermofield double state in warped AdS$_3$ black holes, both for the action and the volume conjectures. Besides the linear divergences, which are also present in the BTZ black hole, additional logarithmic divergences appear. For the action conjecture, these log divergences are not affected by the arbitrarity in the length scale associated with the counterterm needed to ensure reparameterization invariance. We find that the subregion action complexity obeys the superadditivity proper…
The study of the moments of the partially transposed density matrix provides a new and effective way of detecting bipartite entanglement in a many-body mixed state. This is valuable for cold-atom and ion-trap experiments, as well as in the general context of quantum simulation of many-body systems. In this work we study the time evolution after a quantum quench of the moments of the partial transpose, and several related quantities, such as the Rényi negativities. By combining Conformal Field Theory (CFT) results with integrability, we show that, in the space-time scaling limit of long times a…
We consider the scaling behavior of circuit complexity under quantum quench in an a relativistic fermion field theory on a one dimensional spatial lattice. This is done by finding an exactly solvable quench protocol which asymptotes to massive phases at early and late times and crosses a critical point in between. We find a variety of scaling behavior as a function of the quench rate, starting with a saturation for quenches at the lattice scale, a "fast quench scaling" at intermediate rate and a Kibble Zurek scaling at slow rates.
There are several different proposals, relating holographic complexity to the gravitational objects defined on the Wheeler-DeWitt patch. In this paper, we investigate the evolution of complexity following a global quantum quench for these proposals. We find that surprisingly they all reproduce known properties of complexity, such as the switchback effect. However, each of these proposals also has its own characteristic features during the dynamical evolution, which may serve as a powerful tool to distinguish the various holographic duals of complexity.
In this work, we find that the complexity of quantum many-body states, defined as a spread in the Krylov basis, may serve as a new probe that distinguishes topological phases of matter. We illustrate this analytically in one of the representative examples, the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, finding that spread complexity becomes constant in the topological phase. Moreover, in the same setup, we analyze exactly solvable quench protocols where the evolution of the spread complexity shows distinct dynamical features depending on the topological vs non-topological phase of the initial state as well a…
We study the entanglement islands and subsystem volume complexity corresponding to the left/ right entanglement of a conformal defect in $d$-dimensions in Randall-Sundrum (RS) braneworld model with subcritical tension brane. The left and right modes of the defect mimic the eternal black hole and radiation system respectively. Hence the entanglement entropy between the two follows an eternal black hole Page curve which is unitarity compatible. We compute the volumes corresponding to the left and right branes with preferred Ryu-Takanayagi (RT) surfaces at different times, which provide a probe o…
We consider the Nielsen complexity ${\mathcal C}_N$, the Loschmidt echo ${\mathcal L}$, and the Fubini-Study complexity $τ$ in the transverse XY model, following a sudden quantum quench, in the thermodynamic limit. At small times, the first two are related by ${\mathcal L} \sim e^{-{\mathcal C}_N}$. By computing a novel time-dependent quantum information metric, we show that in this regime, ${\mathcal C}_N \sim dτ^2$, up to lowest order in perturbation. The former relation continues to hold in the same limit at large times, whereas the latter does not. Our results indicate that in the thermody…
The time evolution of the entanglement entropy is a key concept to understand the structure of a non-equilibrium quantum state. In a large class of models, such evolution can be understood in terms of a semiclassical picture of moving quasiparticles spreading the entanglement throughout the system. However, it is not yet known how the entanglement splits between the sectors of an internal local symmetry of a quantum many-body system. Here, guided by the examples of conformal field theories and free-fermion chains, we show that the quasiparticle picture can be adapted to this goal, leading to a…
We study circuit complexity for spatial regions in holographic field theories. We study analogues based on the entanglement wedge of the bulk quantities appearing in the "complexity = volume" and "complexity = action" conjectures. We calculate these quantities for one exterior region of an eternal static neutral or charged black hole in general dimensions, dual to a thermal state on one boundary with or without chemical potential respectively, as well as for a shock wave geometry. We then define several analogues of circuit complexity for mixed states, and use tensor networks to gain intuition…
We study the evolution of holographic subregion complexity under a thermal quench in this paper. From the subregion CV proposal in the AdS/CFT correspondence, the subregion complexity in the CFT is holographically captured by the volume of the codimension-one surface enclosed by the codimension-two extremal entanglement surface and the boundary subregion. Under a thermal quench, the dual gravitational configuration is described by a Vaidya-AdS spacetime. In this case we find that the holographic subregion complexity always increases at early time, and after reaching a maximum it decreases and …
After quantum quenches in many-body systems, finite subsystems evolve non-trivially in time, eventually approaching a stationary state. In typical situations, the reduced density matrix of a given subsystem begins and ends this endeavour as a low-entangled vector in the space of operators. This means that if its operator space entanglement initially grows (which is generically the case), it must eventually decrease, describing a barrier-shaped curve. Understanding the shape of this "entanglement barrier" is interesting for three main reasons: (i) it quantifies the dynamics of entanglement in t…
The presence of nonanalyticity in observables is a manifestation of phase transitions. Through the study of two paradigmatic topological models in one and two dimensions, in this work we show that the circuit complexity based on our specific quantification can reveal the occurrence of topological phase transitions, both in and out of equilibrium, by the presence of nonanalyticity. By quenching the system out of equilibrium, we find that the circuit complexity grows linearly or quadratically in the short-time regime if the quench is finished instantaneously or in a finite time, respectively. No…
We investigate the evolution of holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) and holographic complexity (HC) under a thermal quench in Einstein-Maxwell-Axion theory (EMA), which is dual to a field theory with momentum relaxation on the boundary. A strip-shaped boundary geometry is utilized to calculate HEE and HC via `entropy=surface' and `complexity=volume' conjecture, respectively. By fixing other parameters we claim that either large enough black hole charge or width of the strip will introduce swallow-tail behaviors in HEE and multi-values in HC due to the discontinuity of the minimum Hubeny-Ran…
In this paper, we holographically quantify the entanglement and complexity for mixed states by following the prescription of purification. The bulk theory we consider in this work is a hyperscaling violating solution, characterized by two parameters, hyperscaling violating exponent $θ$ and dynamical exponent $z$. This geometry is dual to a non-relativistic strongly coupled theory with hidden Fermi surfaces. We first compute the holographic analogy of entanglement of purification (EoP), denoted as the minimal area of the entanglement wedge cross section and observe the effects of $z$ and $θ$. T…
We consider a quantum quench in a finite system of length $L$ described by a 1+1-dimensional CFT, of central charge $c$, from a state with finite energy density corresponding to an inverse temperature $β\ll L$. For times $t$ such that $\ell/2<t<(L-\ell)/2$ the reduced density matrix of a subsystem of length $\ell$ is exponentially close to a thermal density matrix. We compute exactly the overlap $\cal F$ of the state at time $t$ with the initial state and show that in general it is exponentially suppressed at large $L/β$. However, for minimal models with $c<1$ (more generally, rational CFTs), …
We extend the branch point twist field approach for the calculation of entanglement entropies to time-dependent problems in 1+1-dimensional massive quantum field theories. We focus on the simplest example: a mass quench in the Ising field theory from initial mass $m_0$ to final mass $m$. The main analytical results are obtained from a perturbative expansion of the twist field one-point function in the post-quench quasi-particle basis. The expected linear growth of the Rényi entropies at large times $mt\gg 1$ emerges from a perturbative calculation at second order. We also show that the Rényi a…
In this work, we study the time evolution of the entanglement hamiltonian during the process of thermalization in a (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) after a quantum quench from a special class of initial states. In particular, we focus on a subsystem which is a finite interval at the end of a semi-infinite line. Based on conformal mappings, the exact forms of both entanglement hamiltonian and entanglement spectrum of the subsystem can be obtained. Aside from various interesting features, it is found that in the infinite time limit the entanglement hamiltonian and entanglement spe…
