We propose and experimentally demonstrate a self-calibrating detector of Cooper pair depairing in a superconductor based on a mesoscopic superconducting island coupled to normal metal leads. On average, exactly one electron passes through the device per broken Cooper pair, independent of the absorber volume, device or material parameters. The device operation is explained by a simple analytical model and verified with numerical simulations in quantitative agreement with experiment. In a proof-of-concept experiment, we use such a detector to measure the high-frequency phonons generated by another, electrically decoupled superconducting island, with a measurable signal resulting from less than 10 fW of dissipated power.
We discuss the charge and the spin tunneling currents between two Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superconductors, where one density of states is spin-split. In the presence of a large temperature bias across the junction, we predict the generation of a spin-polarized thermoelectric current. This thermo-spin effect is the result of a spontaneous particle-hole symmetry breaking in the absence of a polarizing tunnel barrier. The two spin components, which move in opposite directions, generate a spin current larger than the purely polarized case when the thermo-active component dominates over the…
We consider a hybrid structure where a material with Rashba-like spin-orbit coupling is proximity coupled to a conventional superconductor. We find that the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ can be tuned by rotating the vector $\boldsymbol{n}$ characterizing the axis of broken inversion symmetry. This is explained by a leakage of $s$-wave singlet Cooper pairs out of the superconducting region, and by conversion of $s$-wave singlets into other types of correlations, among these $s$-wave odd-frequency pairs robust to impurity scattering. These results demonstrate a conceptually differen…

Fermi surface effect on spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry in unconventional superconducting films
我们提出了一种有助于稳定具有破缺时间反转对称性的超导态的机制,该机制被预测在d波超导膜中实现[A。B. Vorontsov,Phys. Rev. Lett. 102,177001(2009)]。
Motivated by recent thermal conductivity measurements in the superconductor CeCoIn5, we theoretically examine a possible staggered spin-triplet superconducting order to be induced by the coupled spin-density-wave (SDW) and d-wave superconducting (SC) orders in the high field and low temperature (HFLT) SC phase peculiar to this material with strong paramagnetic pair-breaking (PPB). It is shown that one type of the $π$-triplet order is consistent with the thermal conductivity data and can naturally be incorporated in the picture that the Q-phase is a consequence of the strong PPB effect inducing…

Spontaneous symmetry breaking is an important concept for understanding physics ranging from the elementary particles to states of matter. For example, the superconducting state breaks global gauge symmetry, and unconventional superconductors can break additional symmetries. In particular, spin rotational symmetry is expected to be broken in spin-triplet superconductors. However, experimental evidence for such symmetry breaking has not been conclusively obtained so far in any candidate compounds. Here, by 77Se nuclear magnetic resonance measurements, we show that spin rotation symmetry is spon…
We have studied the electronic properties of ScS, a transition-metal monochalcogenide with rocksalt crystal structure, using magnetization, specific heat, transport, and muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. All measurements confirm the bulk superconducting in ScS with a transition temperature of $T_{C}$ = 5.1(5) K. Specific heat together with transverse-field $μ$SR measurements indicate a full gap, while our zero-field $μ$SR study reveals the presence of spontaneous static or quasi-static magnetic fields emerging when entering the superconducting state. We discuss various possib…
Understanding depairing effects in a hybrid-superconducting interface utilizing high spin-orbit materials such as topological insulators or 1D semiconducting nanowires is becoming an important research topic in the study of proximity-induced superconductivity. Experimentally, proximity-induced superconductivity is found to suppress at much lower magnetic fields compared to the superconducting layer without a good understanding of its cause. Here, we provide a phenomenological tool to characterize different pair-breaking mechanisms, the ones that break or preserve time reversal symmetry, and sh…
Three-dimensional line-nodal superconductors exhibit nontrivial topology, which is protected by the time-reversal symmetry. Here we investigate four types of short-range interaction between the gapless line-nodal fermionic quasiparticles by carrying renormalization group analysis. We find that such interactions can induce the dynamical breaking of time-reversal symmetry, which alters the topology and might lead to six possible distinct superconducting states, distinguished by the group representations. After computing the susceptibilities for all the possible phase-transition instabilities, we…
We study the behavior of spinless fermions in superconducting state, in which the phases of the superconducting order parameter depend on the direction of the link. We find that the energy of the superconductor depends on the phase differences of the superconducting order parameter. The solutions for the phases corresponding to the energy minimuma, lead to a topological superconducting state with the nontrivial Chern numbers. We focus our quantitative analysis on the properties of topological states of superconductors with different crystalline symmetry and show that the phase transition in th…
We present a superconducting device showing a clear parity effect in the number of electrons, even when there is, on average, a single nonequilibrium quasiparticle present and the parity of the island switches due to quasiparticles tunneling in and out of the device at rates on the order of 100 Hz. We detect the switching by monitoring in real time the charge state of a superconducting island connected to normal leads by tunnel junctions. The quasiparticles are created by Cooper pairs breaking on the island at a rate of a few kHz. We demonstrate that the pair breaking is caused by the backacti…
The excess increase of the local field distribution width $ΔH\equivσ/γ_μ$ (with $γ_μ=135.5\,$MHz/T being the gyromagnetic ratio of $μ^{+}$), and/or the spontaneous magnetic field $H_{\rm spon}$, have been reported in the superconducting state of a series of compounds more than 10 by $μ$SR (muon spin rotation or relaxation) experiment. Sizes of these quantities are of the order of 1G on the whole. We propose that the increase of the local field distribution $ΔH$ in those compounds, including ions with strong spin-orbit interaction of 5d electrons, such as La in LaNiGa$_2$ or Re in Re$_6$Zr, is …
The search for unconventional superconductivity has been focused on materials with strong spin-orbit coupling and unique crystal lattices. Doped bismuth selenide (Bi$_2$Se$_3$) is a strong candidate given the topological insulator nature of the parent compound and its triangular lattice. The coupling between the physical properties in the superconducting state and its underlying crystal symmetry is a crucial test for unconventional superconductivity. In this paper, we report direct evidence that the superconducting magnetic response couples strongly to the underlying 3-fold crystal symmetry in…
Recent experiments have pointed to a chiral p-wave-like superconductivity in epitaxial Bi/Ni bilayers that are spontaneously time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB), making it a promising platform for exploring physics useful for topologically protected quantum computing. Quite intriguingly, evidence has emerged that in non-epitaxial Bi/Ni bilayers, superconductivity arises due to the formation of NiBi3, which has been reported to host coexisting ferromagnetic and superconducting orders at the surface. We perform high resolution surface magneto-optic Kerr effect (SMOKE) measurements using a Sag…
Understanding the detailed behaviour of superconducting pair breaking photon detectors such as Kinetic Inductance Detectors requires knowledge of the nonequilibrium quasiparticle energy distributions. We have previously calculated the steady state distributions resulting from uniform absorption of monochromatic sub gap and above gap frequency radiation by thin films. In this work, we use the same methods to calculate the effect of illumination by broadband sources, such as thermal radiation from astrophysical phenomena or from the readout system. Absorption of photons at multiple above gap fre…

A quantum phase transition (QPT) between distinct ground states of matter is a wide-spread phenomenon in nature, yet there are only a few experimentally accessible systems where the microscopic mechanism of the transition can be tested and understood. These cases are unique and form the experimentally established foundation for our understanding of quantum critical phenomena. Here we report the discovery that a magnetic-field-driven QPT in superconducting nanowires - a prototypical 1d-system - can be fully explained by the critical theory of pair-breaking transitions characterized by a correla…
We propose a superconducting instability where microscopic supercurrent loops form spontaneously within a unit cell at the superconducting transition temperature with only uniform, onsite and intra-orbital singlet pairing. As a result of the circulating currents time-reversal symmetry is spontaneously broken in the superconducting state. Using Ginzburg-Landau theory, we describe in detail how these currents emerge in a toy model. We discuss the crystallographic symmetry requirements to realize such a state and show that they are met by the Re6X (X=Zr, Hf, Ti) family of time-reversal symmetry b…
We propose a solid state refrigeration technique based on repeated adiabatic magnetization/demagnetization cycles of a superconductor which acts as the working substance. The gradual cooling down of a substrate (normal metal) in contact with the working substance is demonstrated for different initial temperatures of the substrate. Excess heat is given to a hot large-gap superconductor. The on-chip refrigerator works in a cyclic manner because of an effective thermal switching mechanism: Heat transport between N/N versus N/S junctions is asymmetric because of the appearance of the energy gap. T…
Irrespective of the class they belong to, all the hole doped high-Tc cuprate superconductors show an anti-correlation between the superconducting transition temperature and the characteristic pseudogap energy in the underdoped region. The doping dependent pseudogap in the quasiparticle spectral density is believed to remove low-energy electronic states and thereby reduce the superconducting condensate. Impurities within the CuO2 plane, on the other hand, break Cooper pairs in the unitarity limit and diminish superfluid density. Both pseudogap in pure cuprates and impurity scattering in disorde…
We theoretically investigate k-space structures of $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconducting (SC) and spin-density-wave (SDW) orders in their coexistent phase induced by a paramagnetic pair-breaking (PPB) effect in relation to the high field and low temperature (HFLT) SC phase in CeCoIn$_5$. It is shown that, in k-space, the SDW order develops near the gap nodes where the SC order is suppressed by PPB, and the nesting condition for the SDW ordering is satisfied. By comparing the results in the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave SC model and those in an artificial model with no sign change of the gap function in k-sp…
It has been shown [1] that many seemingly contradictory experimental findings concerning the superconducting state in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ can be accounted for as resulting from the existence of an assumed tetra-critical point at near ambient pressure at which $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $g_{xy(x^2-y^2)}$ superconducting states are degenerate. We perform both a Landau-Ginzburg and a microscopic mean-field analysis of the effect of spatially varying strain on such a state. In the presence of finite $xy$ shear strain, the superconducting state consists of two possible symmetry-related time-reversal symmetry (TRS…
