The hidden order phase in URu$_2$Si$_2$ is highly sensitive to electronic doping. A special interest in silicon-to-phosphorus substitution is due to the fact that it may allow one, in part, to isolate the effects of tuning the chemical potential from the complexity of the correlated $f$ and $d$ electronic states. We investigate the new antiferromagnetic phase that is induced in URu$_2$Si$_{2-x}$P$_x$ at $x\gtrsim0.27$. Time-of-flight neutron diffraction of a single crystal ($x=0.28$) reveals $c$-axis collinear $\mathbf{q}_\mathrm{m}=(\frac12,\frac12,\frac12)$ magnetic structure with localized magnetic moments ($\approx2.1\,μ_\mathrm{B}$). This points to an unexpected analogy between the (Si,P) and (Ru,Rh) substitution series. Through further comparisons with other tuning studies of URu$_2$Si$_2$, we are able to delineate the mechanisms by which silicon-to-phosphorus substitution affects the system. In particular, both the localization of itinerant 5$f$ electrons as well as the choice of $\mathbf{q}_m$ appears to be consequences of the increase in chemical potential. Further, enhanced exchange interactions are induced by chemical pressure and lead to magnetic order, in which an increase in inter-layer spacing may play a special role.
We report simultaneous measurements of the distribution of lattice constants and the antiferromagnetic moment in high-purity URu2Si2, using both Larmor and conventional neutron diffraction, as a function of temperature and pressure up to 18 kbar. We establish that the tiny moment in the hidden order (HO) state is purely parasitic and quantitatively originates from the distribution of lattice constants. Moreover, the HO and large-moment antiferromagnetism (LMAF) at high pressure are separated by a line of first-order phase transitions, which ends in a bicritical point. Thus the HO and LMAF are …
Neutron diffraction is used to examine the polarization of weak static antiferromagnetism in high quality single crystalline URu2Si2. As previously documented, elastic Bragg-like diffraction develops for temperature T<T_{HO}= 17.5 K at q=(100) but not at wave vector transfer q=(001). The peak width indicates correlation lengths ξ_c=230(12) Å\ and ξ_a=240(15) Å. The integrated intensity of the T-dependent peaks corresponds to a sample averaged c-oriented staggered moment of μ_{c}=0.022(1) μ_B at T=1.7 K. The absence of T-dependent diffraction at q=(001) places a limit μ_{\perp}<0.0011 μ_B on an…
We have used specific heat and neutron diffraction measurements on single crystals of URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ for Fe concentrations $x$ $\leq$ 0.7 to establish that chemical substitution of Ru with Fe acts as "chemical pressure" $P_{ch}$ as previously proposed by Kanchanavatee et al. [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 84}, 245122 (2011)] based on bulk measurements on polycrystalline samples. Notably, neutron diffraction reveals a sharp increase of the uranium magnetic moment at $x=0.1$, reminiscent of the behavior at the "hidden order" (HO) to large moment antiferromagnetic (LMAFM) phase transition observed a…
A review of recent state-of-the-art pulsed field experiments performed on URu$_2$Si$_2$ under a magnetic field applied along its easy magnetic axis $\mathbf{c}$ is given. Resistivity, magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, Shubnikov-de Haas, and neutron diffraction experiments are presented, permitting to emphasize the relationship between Fermi surface reconstructions, the destruction of the hidden-order and the appearance of a spin-density wave state in a high magnetic field.
We have made extensive reciprocal space maps in the heavy-fermion superconductor URu2Si2 using high-resolution time-of-flight single-crystal neutron diffraction to search for signs of a hidden order parameter related to the 17.5 K phase transition. Within the present sensitivity of the experiment (0.007 uB/U-ion for sharp peaks), no additional features such as incommensurate structures or short-range order have been found in the (h0l) or (hhl) scattering planes. The only additional low-temperature scattering observed was the well-known tiny antiferromagnetic moment of 0.03 uB/U-ion.
The onset of antiferromagnetic order in URu2Si2 has been studied via neutron diffraction in a helium pressure medium, which most closely approximates hydrostatic conditions. The antiferromagnetic critical pressure is 0.80 GPa, considerably higher than values previously reported. Complementary electrical resistivity measurements imply that the hidden order-antiferromagnetic bicritical point far exceeds 1.02 GPa. Moreover, the redefined pressure-temperature phase diagram suggests that the superconducting and antiferromagnetic phase boundaries actually meet at a common critical pressure at zero t…
We discuss possible approaches to the problem of the URu2Si2 "Hidden Order" (HO) which remains unsolved after tremendous efforts of researches. Suppose there is no spatial symmetry breaking at the HO transition temperature and solely the time-reversal symmetry breaking emerges owing to some sort of magnetic order. As a result of its 4/mmm symmetry, each uranium atom is a three-dimensional magnetic vortex; its intra-atomic magnetization M(r) is intrinsically non-collinear, so that its dipole, quadrupole and toroidal moments vanish, thus making the vortex "hidden". The first non-zero magnetic mu…
Phase transitions and symmetry are intimately linked. Melting of ice, for example, restores translation invariance. The mysterious hidden order (HO) phase of URu$_2$Si$_2$ has, despite relentless research efforts, kept its symmetry breaking element intangible. Here we present a high-resolution x-ray diffraction study of the URu$_2$Si$_2$ crystal structure as a function of hydrostatic pressure. Below a critical pressure threshold $p_c\approx3$ kbar, no tetragonal lattice symmetry breaking is observed even below the HO transition $T_{HO}=17.5$ K. For $p>p_c$, however, a pressure-induced rotation…
Since the 1985 discovery of the phase transition at $T_{\rm HO}=17.5$ K in the heavy-fermion metal URu$_2$Si$_2$, neither symmetry change in the crystal structure nor magnetic ordering have been observed, which makes this "hidden order" enigmatic. Some high-field experiments have suggested electronic nematicity which breaks fourfold rotational symmetry, but direct evidence has been lacking for its ground state at zero magnetic field. Here we report on the observation of lattice symmetry breaking from the fourfold tetragonal to twofold orthorhombic structure by high-resolution synchrotron X-ray…
In the external field slightly inclined to the $x$- or y-axis of the frustrated tetragonal atiferromagnet Pr2CuO4, a transition is discovered from the phase with orthogonal antiferromagnetic spin subsystems along [1,0,0] and [0,1,0] to the phase with the collinear spins. This phase is shown to be due to the pseudodipolar interaction, and transforms into the spin-flop phase S perp H asymptotically at very high field. The discovered phase transition holds at T=0 and is a quantum one, with the transition field being the critical point and the angle between two subsystems being the order parameter…
Fe pnictides and related materials have been a topic of intense research for understanding the complex interplay between magnetism and superconductivity. Here we report on the magnetic structure of SrMn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ that crystallizes in a trigonal structure ($P\bar{3}m1$) and undergoes an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at $T_{\textrm c}$ $= 118(2)$ K. The magnetic susceptibility remains nearly constant at temperatures $T \le T_{\textrm N}$ with $\textbf{H}\parallel \textbf{c}$ whereas it decreases significantly with $\textbf{H}\parallel \textbf{ab}$. This shows that the ordered Mn moments…
X-ray diffraction experiments under pressure in a diamond anvil cell have been performed to gauge any response of the crystalline lattice of URu2Si2 to the "hidden order" or antiferromagnetic transitions, the latter of which is accessible only with applied pressure. The ambient-pressure crystal structure of URu2Si2 persists to high pressure, and structural characterization reveals a reasonably robust crystal lattice with respect to both of the aforementioned temperature-induced electronic transitions. Coupling between the lattice and the "hidden order" transition is reconfirmed to be subtle, a…
Magnetic structure of tetragonal UAu$_2$Si$_2$ was investigated by single-crystal neutron diffraction experiments. Below $T_{\rm N}$ = 20 K it orders antiferromagnetically with a propagation vector of $k = (2/3, 0, 0)$ and magnetic moments of uranium ions pointing along the tetragonal $c$-axis. Weak signs of the presence of a ferromagnetic component of magnetic moment were traced out.Taking into account a group theory calculation and experimental results of magnetization and $^{29}$Si-NMR, the magnetic structure is determined to be a squared-up antiferromagnetic structure, with a stacking sequ…

The aim of this study is to compare the magnetic behavior of URu2Si2 under uniaxial stress along the a-axis with the behavior under hydrostatic pressure. Both are very similar, but uniaxial stress presents a critical stress σxa smaller (0.33(5)GPa) than the hydrostatic critical pressure px =0.5 GPa where the ground state switches from HO (hidden order) to AF (antiferromagnetic) ground state. From these critical values and from Larmor neutron diffraction (LND), we conclude that the magnetic properties are governed by the shortest U-U distance in the plane (a lattice parameter). Under stress, th…
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), neutron diffaction (ND), x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements on the frustrated A-site spinel CoAl2O4 compound reveal a collinear antiferromagnetic ordering below Tn = 9.8(2) K. A high quality powder sample characterized by x-ray diffraction that indicates a relatively low Co-Al inversion parameter x = 0.057(20) in (Co1-xAlx)[Al2-xCox]O4, shows a broad maximum around 15 K in magnetic susceptibility and a sharp peak at Tn in heat capacity. The average ordered magnetic moment of Co^2+ (S = 3/2) ions at the A-site is estimated…

Co4Ta2O9 exhibits a three-dimensional magnetic lattice based on the buckled honeycomb motif. It shows unusual magnetoelectric effects, including the sign change and non-linearity. These effects cannot be understood without the detailed knowledge of the magnetic structure. Herein, we report neutron diffraction and direction-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements on Co4Ta2O9 single crystals. Below 20.3 K, we find a long-range antiferromagnetic order in the alternating buckled and flat honeycomb layers of Co2+ ions stacked along the c axis. Within experimental accuracy, the magnetic momen…
We report the high-field induced magnetic phase in single crystal of U(Ru0.92Rh0.08)2Si2. Our neutron study combined with high-field magnetization, shows that the magnetic phase above the first metamagnetic transition at Hc1 = 21.6 T has an uncompensated commensurate antiferromagnetic structure with propagation vector Q2 = ( 2/3 0 0) possessing two single-Q domains. U moments of 1.45 (9) muB directed along the c axis are arranged in an up-up-down sequence propagating along the a axis, in agreement with bulk measurements. The U magnetic form factor at high fields is consistent with both the U3+…
The entire magnetic phase diagram of the quasi two dimensional (2D) magnet on a distorted triangular lattice KFe(MoO4)2 is outlined by means of magnetization, specific heat, and neutron diffraction measurements. It is found that the spin network breaks down into two almost independent magnetic subsystems. One subsystem is a collinear antiferromagnet that shows a simple spin-flop behavior in applied fields. The other is a helimagnet that instead goes through a series of exotic commensurate-incommensurate phase transformations. In the various phases one observes either true 3D order or quasi-2D …
A recent polarized neutron diffraction experiment on the 5d2 rhenium double perovskite Ba2YReO6 held at a low temperature uncovered weak magnetic diffraction peaks. Data analysis inferred a significantly reduced Re dipole moment, and long-range order compatible with an antiferromagnet, non-collinear motif. To interpret the experimental findings, we present a model wavefunction for Re ions derived from the crystal field potential, Coulomb interaction, and spin-orbit coupling that fully respects the symmetry of the low-temperature ordered state. It is used to calculate in analytic form all multi…
We discuss a model scenario for multiferroic systems of type II (collinear spins) where the electric dipolar order competes with a frustrated magnetic order in determining the elastic distortions of the lattice ion positions. High magnetic frustration due to second neighbors exchange and small spin easy-axis anisotropy lead to the appearance of the so called quantum magnetic plateau states. Increasing the magnetic field above the plateau border produces composite excitations, where fractionalized spin tertions arise together with spontaneous dipolar flips (in the form of domain walls) and enha…
Lattice modulation and magnetic structures in magnetoelectric compounds Tb1-xDyxMnO3 have been studied around the ferroelectric (FE) Curie temperature T_C by x-ray and neutron diffraction. Temperature-independent modulation vectors through T_C are observed for the compounds with 0.50< x < 0.68. This indicates that ferroelectricity with a polarization (P) along the c axis in the RMnO3 series cannot be ascribed to such an incommensurate-commensurate transition of an antiferromagnetic order as was previously anticipated. Neutron diffraction study of a single crystal with x=0.59 shows that the FE …
By means of powder neutron diffraction we investigate changes in the magnetic structure of the coplanar non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Ge caused by an application of hydrostatic pressure up to 5\phantom{ }GPa. At ambient conditions the kagomé layers of Mn atoms in Mn$_3$Ge order in a triangular 120$^{\circ}$ spin structure. Under high pressure the spins acquire a uniform out-of-plane canting, gradually transforming the magnetic texture to a non-coplanar configuration. With increasing pressure the canted structure fully transforms into the collinear ferromagnetic one. We observed that magn…
We set forth the structural and magnetic properties of the frustrated spin-$5/2$ triangle lattice antiferromagnet Na$_3$Fe(PO$_4$)$_2$ examined via x-ray diffraction, magnetization, heat capacity, and neutron diffraction measurements on the polycrystalline sample. No structural distortion was detected from the temperature-dependant x-ray diffraction down to 12.5 K, except a systematic lattice contraction. The magnetic susceptibility at high temperatures agrees well with the high-temperature series expansion for a spin-$5/2$ isotropic triangular lattice antiferromagnet with an average exchange …
Non-resonant X-ray magnetic scattering has been used to study the magnetic structure of multiferroic TbMnO3 in its ferroelectric phase. Circularly polarized X-rays were combined with a full polarization analysis of the scattered beam to reveal important new information on the magnetic structure of this canonical multiferroic. An applied electric field is shown to create a magnetic nearly mono-domain state in which the cylcoidal order on the Mn sublattice rotates either clockwise or counter-clockwise depending on the sign of the field. It is demonstrated how this technique provides sensitivity …
The perovskite nickelates RNiO$_3$ (R: rare-earth) have been studied as potential multiferroic compounds. A certain degree of charge disproportionation in the Ni ions has been confirmed by high resolution synchrotron power diffraction: instead of the nominal Ni$^{3+}$ valence, they can have the mixed-valence state Ni$^{(3-δ)+}$ and Ni$^{(3+δ)+}$, though agreement has not been reached on the precise value of $δ$ (e.g. for NdNiO$_3$, $δ=0.0$ and $δ=0.29$ were reported). Also, the magnetic ground state is not yet clear: collinear and non-collinear Ni-O magnetic structures have been proposed to ex…
We used a local susceptibility approach in extensive polarized neutron diffraction studies of the spin liquid \tbti. For a magnetic field applied along the [110] and [111] directions, we found that, at high temperature, all Tb moments are collinear and parallel to the field. With decreasing temperature, the Tb moments reorient from the field direction to their local anisotropy axes. For the [110] field direction, the field induced magnetic structure at 10 K is spin ice-like, but with two types of Tb moments of very different magnitudes. For a field along [111], the magnetic structure resembles…
We report on the ultrafast dynamics of magnetic order in a single crystal of CuO at a temperature of 207 K in response to strong optical excitation using femtosecond resonant x-ray diffraction. In the experiment, a femtosecond laser pulse induces a sudden, nonequilibrium increase in magnetic disorder. After a short delay ranging from 400 fs to 2 ps, we observe changes in the relative intensity of the magnetic ordering diffraction peaks that indicate a shift from a collinear commensurate phase to a spiral incommensurate phase. These results indicate that the ultimate speed for this antiferromag…
The magnetism of Sr$_2$F$_2$Fe$_2$OS$_2$ was examined through neutron powder diffraction and thermodynamic and transport measurements. Quasi-two-dimensional magnetic order develops below $T_N$ = 106(2) K with an in-plane correlation length exceeding 310 Å and an out-of-plane correlation length of just 17(3) Å. The data are consistent with a two-k structure with $k_1$ = (1/2, 0, 1/2) and $k_2$ = (0, 1/2, 1/2) and an ordered moment of 3.3(1) $μ_B$ oriented along the in-plane components of k. This structure is composed of orthogonal AFM chains intersecting at super-exchange mediating O sites. Den…
The low temperature state of CeRu2Al10 has been studied by neutron powder diffraction and muon spin relaxation (muSR). By combining both techniques, we prove that the transition occurring below T*~27K, which has been the subject of considerable debate, is unambiguously magnetic due to the ordering of the Ce sublattice. The magnetic structure with propagation vector k=(1,0,0) involves collinear antiferromagnetic alignment of the Ce moments along the c-axis of the Cmcm space group with a reduced moment of 0.34(2)mu_B. No structural changes within the resolution limit have been detected below the…
The Fe1+xTe phase diagram consists of two distinct magnetic structures with collinear order present at low interstitial iron concentrations and a helical phase at large values of x with these phases separated by a Lifshitz point. We use unpolarized single crystal diffraction to confirm the helical phase for large interstitial iron concentrations and polarized single crystal diffraction to demonstrate the collinear order for the iron deficient side of the Fe1+xTe phase diagram. Polarized neutron inelastic scattering show that the fluctuations associated with this collinear order are predominate…

The Co2V2O7 is recently reported to exhibit amazing magnetic field-induced magnetization plateaus and ferroelectricity, but its magnetic ground state remains ambiguous due to its structural complexity. Magnetometry measurements, and time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction (NPD) have been employed to study the structural and magnetic properties of Co2V2O7, which consists of two non-equivalent Co sites. Upon cooling below the Neél temperature TN = 6.3 K, we observe magnetic Bragg peaks at 2K in NPD which indicated the formation of long range magnetic order of Co2+ moments. After symmetry analy…
We present the results of a combined $^7$Li NMR and diffraction study on LiGa$_{0.95}$In$_{0.05}$Cr$_4$O$_8$, a member of LiGa$_{1-x}$In$_{x}$Cr$_4$O$_8$ "breathing" pyrochlore family. Via specific heat and NMR measurements, we find that the complex sequence of first-order transitions observed for $x=0$ is replaced by a single, apparently second-order transition at $T_f=11$ K. Neutron and X-ray diffraction rule out both structural symmetry lowering and magnetic long-range order as the origin of this transition. Instead, reverse Monte Carlo fitting of the magnetic diffuse scattering indicates t…

We present the results of the first neutron powder and single crystal diffraction studies of the coupled spin tetrahedra systems ${\CuTeX}$ (X=Cl, Br). Incommensurate antiferromagnetic order with the propagation vectors ${\bf{k}_{Cl}}\approx[0.150,0.422,\half]$, ${\bf{k}_{Br}}\approx[0.158,0.354,\half]$ sets in below $T_{N}$=18 K for X=Cl and 11 K for X=Br. No simple collinear antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic arrangements of moments within Cu${}^{2+}$ tetrahedra fit these observations. Fitting the diffraction data to more complex but physically reasonable models with multiple helices leads t…
We report a high-resolution neutron diffraction study of the crystal and magnetic structure of the orbitally-degenerate frustrated metallic magnet AgNiO2. At high temperatures the structure is hexagonal with a single crystallographic Ni site, low-spin Ni3+ with spin-1/2 and two-fold orbital degeneracy, arranged in an antiferromagnetic triangular lattice with frustrated spin and orbital order. A structural transition occurs upon cooling below 365 K to a tripled hexagonal unit cell containing three crystallographically-distinct Ni sites with expanded and contracted NiO6 octahedra, naturally expl…
We report a comprehensive neutron diffraction study of the crystal structure and magnetic order in a series of single-crystal and powder samples of SrFeO$_{3-δ}$ in the vacancy range $0 \leq δ\leq 0.23$. The data provide detailed insights into the interplay between the oxygen vacancy order and the magnetic structure of this system. In particular, a crystallographic analysis of data on Sr8Fe8O23 revealed a structural transition between the high-temperature tetragonal and a low-temperature monoclinic phase with a critical temperature T = 75 K, which originates from charge ordering on the Fe subl…
Magnetic frustration in three dimensions (3D) manifests itself in the spin-$\frac12$ insulator Li$_2$CuW$_2$O$_8$. Density-functional band-structure calculations reveal a peculiar spin lattice built of triangular planes with frustrated interplane couplings. The saturation field of 29 T contrasts with the susceptibility maximum at 8.5 K and a relatively low Néel temperature $T_N\simeq 3.9$ K. Magnetic order below $T_N$ is collinear with the propagation vector $(0,\frac12,0)$ and an ordered moment of 0.65(4) $μ_B$ according to neutron diffraction data. This reduced ordered moment together with t…
We report the crystal structure and highly-anisotropic magnetic, transport and thermal properties of an exceptionally good single crystal of U(Ru0.92Rh0.08)2Si2 prepared using a modified Czochralski method. Our study, that also includes neutron diffraction results, shows all the heavy-fermion signatures of pristine URu2Si2 , however, the superconductivity, hidden order and remanent weak antiferromagnetic orders are absent. Instead, the ground state of the doped system can be classified as a spin liquid that preserves the heavy-fermion character. U(Ru0.92Rh0.08)2Si2 exhibits a short-range magne…
The structure and magnetic properties of Mn1+xV2-xO4 (0<x<=1), a complex frustrated system, were investigated by heat capacity, magnetization, x-ray diffraction, and neutron diffraction measurements. For x<=0.3, a cubic-to-tetragonal (c > a) phase transition was observed. For x > 0.3, the system maintained the tetragonal lattice. The collinear and noncollinear magnetic transition was also observed for all compositions. To reveal the dynamics of the ground state, first principle simulation was applied to not only analyze the orbital effects of Mn2+, Mn3+, and V3+ ions, but also the related exch…
The present study reports on the structural and magnetic phase transitions in Pr-doped polycrystalline Tb0.6Pr0.4MnO3, using high-resolution neutron powder diffraction (NPD) collected at SINQ spallation source (PSI), to emphasize the suppression of the sinusoidal magnetic structure of pure TbMnO3 and the evolution to a collinear A-type antiferromagnetic ordering. The phase purity, Jahn-Teller distortion, and one-electron bandwidth for eg orbital of Mn3+ cation have been calculated for polycrystalline Tb0.6Pr0.4MnO3, in comparison to the parent materials TbMnO3 and PrMnO3, through the Rietveld …
Neutron diffraction on the centrosymmetric square-net magnet EuGa$_2$Al$_2$ reveals multiple incommensurate magnetic states (AFM1,2,3) in zero field. In applied field, a new magnetic phase (A) is identified from magnetization and transport measurements, bounded by two of the $μ_0H$~=~0 incommensurate magnetic phases (AFM1,helical and AFM3, cycloidal) with different moment orientations. Moreover, magneto-transport measurements indicate the presence of a topological Hall effect, with maximum values centered in the A phase. Together, these results render EuGa$_2$Al$_2$ a material with non-coplana…
We report a comprehensive study of magnetic properties of Ni3TeO6. The system crystallizes in a noncentrosymmetric rhombohedral lattice, space group R3. There are three differently coordinated Ni atoms in the unit cell. Two of them form an almost planar honeycomb lattice, while the third one is placed between the layers. Magnetization and specific heat measurements revealed a single magnetic ordering at TN = 52 K. Below TN the susceptibility with the magnetic field parallel to the c-axis drops towards zero while the perpendicular susceptibility remains constant, a characteristic of antiferroma…
We present a resonant x-ray diffraction study of the magnetic order in NdFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ and its coupling to applied electric fields. Our high-resolution measurements reveal A coexistence of two different magnetic phases, which can be triggered effectively by external electric fields. More in detail, the volume fraction of the collinear magnetic phase is found to strongly increase at the expense of helically ordered regions when an electric field is applied. These results confirm that the collinear magnetic phase is responsible for the ferroelectric polarization of NdFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ and,…
We show that interlayer spins play a dual role in the Cairo pentagonal magnet Bi$_4$Fe$_5$O$_{13}$F, on one hand mediating the three-dimensional (3D) magnetic order and on the other driving spin-reorientation transitions both within and between the planes. The corresponding sequence of magnetic orders unraveled by neutron diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy features two orthogonal magnetic structures described by opposite local vector chiralities, and an intermediate, partly disordered phase with nearly collinear spins. A similar collinear phase has been predicted theoretically to be stabil…
We report the structural, magnetic and thermodynamic properties of the double perovskite compound La2CuIrO6 from X-ray, neutron diffraction, neutron depolarization, dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, specific heat, muon-spin-relaxation (uSR), electron-spin-resonance (ESR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. Below ~113 K, short-range spin-spin correlations occur within the Cu2+ sublattice. With decreasing temperature, the Ir4+ sublattice progressively involves in the correlation process. Below T = 74 K, the magnetic sublattices of Cu (spin s = 1/2) and Ir (pseudospin j = 1/2) i…
In the orthorhombic manganites o-RMnO3, where R is a heavy rare earth (R = Gd-Yb), the Mn3+ sublattice is known to undergo two magnetic transitions. The low temperature phase has an antiferromagnetic structure (collinear or elliptical), which has been well characterized by neutron diffraction in most of these compounds. The intermediate phase, occurring in a narrow temperature range (a few K), is documented for R = Gd-Ho as a collinear modulated structure, incommensurate with the lattice spacings. We report here on a 57Fe Mössbauer study of 2% 57Fe doped o-YbMnO3, where the spin only Fe3+ ion …
Magnetic phases for the intermetallic compound NdMn1.4Co0.6Si2 have been investigated at various temperatures by dc magnetization, neutron diffraction and neutron depolarization. Our study shows multiple magnetic phase transitions with temperature (T) over 1.5-300 K. In agreement with dc-magnetization and neutron depolarization results, the temperature dependence of the neutron diffraction patterns shows five distinct regions with different magnetic phases. These temperature regions are (i) T >= 215 K, (ii) 215 K > T >= 50 K, (iii) 50 K > T >= 40 K, (iv) 40 K > T > 15 K, and (v) T =< 15 K. The…
AMX$_3$ compounds are structurally diverse, a notable example being the post-perovskite structure which adopts a two-dimensional framework with corner- and edge-sharing octahedra. Few molecular post-perovskites are known and of these, none have reported magnetic structures. Here we report the synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of molecular post-perovskites: CsNi(NCS)$_3$, a thiocyanate framework, and two new isostructural analogues CsCo(NCS)$_3$ and CsMn(NCS)$_3$. Magnetisation measurements show that all three compounds undergo magnetic order. CsNi(NCS)$_3$ (Curie temperature, $T_\ma…
Neutron and x-ray diffraction measurements are presented for powders and single crystals of CaCo{1.86}As2. The crystal structure is a collapsed-tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure as previously reported, but with 7(1)% vacancies on the Co sites corresponding to the composition CaCo{1.86(2)}As2. The thermal expansion coefficients for both the a- and c-axes are positive from 10 to 300 K. Neutron diffraction measurements on single crystals demonstrate the onset of A-type collinear antiferromagnetic order below the Neel temperature TN = 52(1) K with the ordered moments directed along the tetragonal…
Sr$_{3}$ZnIrO$_{6}$ is an effective spin one-half Mott insulating iridate belonging to a family of magnets which includes a number of quasi-one dimensional systems as well as materials exhibiting three dimensional order. Here we present the results of an extensive investigation into the magnetism including heat capacity, a.c. susceptibility, muon spin rotation ($μ$SR), neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering on the same sample. It is established that the material exhibits a transition at about $17$ K into a three-dimensional antiferromagnetic structure with propagation vector $\bo…
Using neutron powder diffraction and Monte-Carlo simulations we show that a spin-liquid regime emerges at $all compositions in the diamond-lattice antiferromagnets Co(Al1-xCox)2O4. This spin-liquid regime induced by frustration due to the second-neighbour exchange coupling J2, is gradually superseded by antiferromagnetic collinear long-range order (k=0) at low temperatures. Upon substitution of Al3+ by Co3+ in the octahedral B-site the temperature range occupied by the spin-liquid regime narrows and TN increases. To explain the experimental observations we considered magnetic anisotropy D or t…
