Neutron diffraction is used to examine the polarization of weak static antiferromagnetism in high quality single crystalline URu2Si2. As previously documented, elastic Bragg-like diffraction develops for temperature T<T_{HO}= 17.5 K at q=(100) but not at wave vector transfer q=(001). The peak width indicates correlation lengths ξ_c=230(12) Å\ and ξ_a=240(15) Å. The integrated intensity of the T-dependent peaks corresponds to a sample averaged c-oriented staggered moment of μ_{c}=0.022(1) μ_B at T=1.7 K. The absence of T-dependent diffraction at q=(001) places a limit μ_{\perp}<0.0011 μ_B on an f- or d-orbital based in-plane staggered magnetic dipole moment, which is associated with multipolar orders proposed for URu_2Si_2.
The influence of magnetic dipole interactions (MDIs) on the magnetic properties of local-moment spin systems is investigated. The eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the MDI tensor are determined for a wide variety of spin lattices and magnetic wavevectors in the magnetically ordered state with collinear moment alignments. The predicted easy axes in the ordered state are compared with experimental results for antiferromagnetic (AFM) compounds. The theory is generalized to include noncollinear AFM structures and compared with experiments. Many properties caused or influenced by MDIs in the ordered …
We report an experimental study of 2D dipole clusters formed by small magnetic particles floating at the air-water interface. The particles form hexagonally ordered clusters due to interplay between dipole-dipole repulsion and confining external forces. Optical images of the clusters allow determination of area S, total energy E, and the chemical potential for different particle numbers N<130. Asymptotic expressions for E(N), S(N) account fairly well for the smooth part of our experimental results. However, on top of the smooth dependences we observe quasiperiodic fluctuations with dips at ``m…
We report formation of magnetic textures in the ferromagnetic (FM) phase of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ for $x =$ 0.125; these textures are magnetic bubbles, magnetic stripe domains, and forced FM states. In situ Lorentz microscopy (LM) observations show that magnetic bubbles exist in the FM insulating phase accompanying the formation of the charge$/$orbital ordering (CO$/$OO). Furthermore, stable magnetic bubbles still exist in an intermediate temperature region between the CO$/$OO ($T_{CO} =$ 155 K) and FM ($T_c =$ 190 K) transition temperatures. These magnetic bubbles are believed to originate …
We theoretically investigate the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) that requires neither a net magnetization nor an external magnetic field in collinear antiferromagnets. We show that such an emergent AHE is essentially caused by a ferroic ordering of the anisotropic magnetic dipole (AMD), which provides an effective coupling between ordered magnetic moments and electronic motion in the crystal. We demonstrate that the AMD is naturally induced by the antiferromagnetic ordering, in which the magnetic moments have a quadrupole spatial distribution. In view of the ferroic AMD ordering, we analyze the b…
The hidden ordered state of the frustrated pyrochlore oxide Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$ is possibly one of the two electric multipolar, or quadrupolar, states of the effective pseudospin-1/2 Hamiltonian derived from crystal-field ground state doublets of non-Kramers Tb$^{3+}$ ions. These long-range orders are antiparallel or parallel alignments of transverse pseudospin components representing electric quadrupole moments, which cannot be observed as magnetic Bragg reflections by neutron scattering. However pseudospin waves of these states are composite waves of the magnetic-dipole and electri…
We present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of the pyrochlore Tb$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$, an exemplary realization of a material whose properties are dominated by competition between magnetic dipolar and electric quadrupolar correlations. The dipolar and quadrupolar correlations evolve over three distinct regimes that we characterize via heat capacity, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering. In the first regime, above $T^*=1.1$ K, significant quadrupolar correlations lead to an intense inelastic mode that cannot be accounted for within a scenario with solely magnetic dipole-dipole c…
We show that 1:1 ordering of A$'$ and A$''$ cations in A$'_{1/2}$A$''_{1/2}$B$_2$X$_4$ magnetic spinels results in appearance of magnetoelectric properties. Possible value of magnetically induced electric polarization is calculated using the recently proposed microscopic model, which takes into account spin-dependent electric dipole moments of magnetic ions located in noncentrosymmetric crystallographic positions. We build phenomenological models of magnetic phase transitions in cation-ordered spinels, which describe ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic ordering patterns of B cation spins, and …
We present an experimental study of the pyrochlore coumpound Nd2Zr2O7 by means of neutron scattering and magnetization measurements down to 90 mK. The Nd$^{3+}$ magnetic moments exhibit a strong local $\langle$111$\rangle$ Ising anisotropy together with a dipolar-octupolar nature, different from the standard Kramers-doublet studied so far. We show that, despite the positive Curie-Weiss temperature, \ndzr\ undergoes a transition around 285 mK towards an all-in$-$all-out antiferromagnetic state. We establish the $(H,T)$ phase diagram in the three directions of the applied field and reveal a meta…
A hysteretic in-plane magnetoresistance develops below the superconducting transition of LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfaces for $\left|H_{/\!/}\right|<$ 0.15 T, independently of the carrier density or oxygen annealing. We show that this hysteresis arises from vortex depinning within a thin superconducting layer, in which the vortices are created by discrete ferromagnetic dipoles located solely above the layer. We find no evidence for finite-momentum pairing or bulk magnetism and hence conclude that ferromagnetism is strictly confined to the interface, where it competes with superconductivity.
A broad continuum-like spin excitation (1--10 meV) with a peak structure around 2.4 meV has been observed in the ferroelectric $ab$ spiral spin phase of Gd$_{0.7}$Tb$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ by using terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy. Based on a complete set of light-polarization measurements, we identify the spin excitation active for the light $E$ vector only along the a-axis, which grows in intensity with lowering temperature even from above the magnetic ordering temperature but disappears upon the transition to the $A$-type antiferromagnetic phase. Such an electric-dipole active spin excitati…
We investigate electric polarizations emergent perpendicular to an applied thermal gradient in insulating systems. The thermally-induced electric polarization, known as thermopolarization, has been studied conventionally in the case that an electric polarization appears along the thermal gradient. Here, we focus on the antisymmetric component of the thermopolarization tensor and reveal that it becomes nonzero owing to the ferro-type order for electric-toroidal dipole moments. To describe local electric polarizations originating from the disproportionation of localized electronic clouds, we int…
Spin excitations of magnetoelectric LiNiPO$_4$ are studied by infrared absorption spectroscopy in the THz spectral range as a function of magnetic field through various commensurate and incommensurate magnetically ordered phases up to 33\,T. Six spin resonances and a strong two-magnon continuum are observed in zero magnetic field. Our systematic polarization study reveals that some of the excitations are usual magnetic-dipole active magnon modes, while others are either electromagnons, electric-dipole active, or magnetoelectric, both electric- and magnetic-dipole active spin excitations. Field…
Spin ice systems display a variety of very nontrivial properties, the most striking being the existence in them of magnetic monopoles. Such monopole states can also have nontrivial electric properties: there exist electric dipoles attached to each monopole. A novel situation is encountered in the moment fragmentation (MF) state, in which monopoles and antimonopoles are perfectly ordered, whereas spins themselves remain disordered. We show that such partial ordering strongly modifies the electric activity of such systems: the electric dipoles, which are usually random and dynamic, become paired…
