The number-theoretic codes are a class of codes defined by single or multiple congruences and are mainly used for correcting insertion and deletion errors. Since the number-theoretic codes are generally non-linear, the analysis method for such codes is not established enough. The distance enumerator of a code is a unary polynomial whose $i$th coefficient gives the number of the pairs of codewords with distance $i$. The distance enumerator gives the maximum likelihood decoding error probability of the code. This paper presents an identity of the distance enumerators for the number-theoretic codes. Moreover, as an example, we derive the Hamming distance enumerator for the Varshamov-Tenengolts (VT) codes.
Cumulative weight enumerators of random linear codes are introduced, their asymptotic properties are studied, and very sharp thresholds are exhibited; as a consequence, it is shown that the asymptotic Gilbert-Varshamov bound is a very sharp threshold point for the density of the linear codes whose relative distance is greater than a given positive number. For arbitrary random codes, similar settings and results are exhibited; in particular, the very sharp threshold point for the density of the codes whose relative distance is greater than a given positive number is located at half the asymptot…
We show that one of the Shor-Laflamme weight enumerators of a codeword stabilized quantum code may be interpreted as the distance enumerator of an associated classical code.
Braided convolutional codes (BCCs) are a class of spatially coupled turbo-like codes (SC-TCs) with excellent belief propagation (BP) thresholds. In this paper, we analyze the performance of BCCs in the finite block-length regime. We derive the average weight enumerator function (WEF) and compute the union bound on the performance for the uncoupled BCC ensemble. Our results suggest that the union bound is affected by poor distance properties of a small fraction of codes. By computing the union bound for the expurgated ensemble, we show that the floor improves substantially and very low error ra…
The number-theoretic codes are a class of codes defined by single or multiple congruences. These codes are mainly used for correcting insertion and deletion errors, and for correcting asymmetric errors. This paper presents a formula for a generalization of the complete weight enumerator for the number-theoretic codes. This formula allows us to derive the weight enumerators and cardinalities for the number-theoretic codes. As a special case, this paper provides the Hamming weight enumerators and cardinalities of the non-binary Tenengolts' codes, correcting single insertion or deletion. Moreover…
Product codes are widely used in data-storage, optical and wireless applications. Their analytical performance evaluation usually relies on the truncated union bound, which provides a low error rate approximation based on the minimum distance term only. In fact, the complete weight enumerator of most product codes remains unknown. In this paper, concatenated representations are introduced and applied to compute the complete average enumerators of arbitrary product codes over a field Fq. The split weight enumerators of some important constituent codes (Hamming, Reed-Solomon) are studied and use…
A closed form formula of the partition weight enumerator of maximum distance separable (MDS) codes is derived for an arbitrary number of partitions. Using this result, some properties of MDS codes are discussed. The results are extended for the average binary image of MDS codes in finite fields of characteristic two. As an application, we study the multiuser error probability of Reed Solomon codes.
The analysis of random coding error exponents pertaining to erasure/list decoding, due to Forney, is revisited. Instead of using Jensen's inequality as well as some other inequalities in the derivation, we demonstrate that an exponentially tight analysis can be carried out by assessing the relevant moments of a certain distance enumerator. The resulting bound has the following advantages: (i) it is at least as tight as Forney's bound, (ii) under certain symmetry conditions associated with the channel and the random coding distribution, it is simpler than Forney's bound in the sense that it inv…
A binary linear code is called {\em LCD} if it intersects its dual trivially. We show that the coefficients of the joint weight enumerator of such a code with its dual satisfy linear constraints, leading to a new linear programming bound on the size of an LCD code of given length and minimum distance. In addition, we show that this polynomial is, in general, an invariant of a matrix group of dimension $4$ and order $12$. Also, we sketch a Gleason formula for this weight enumerator.
The serial concatenation of a repetition code with two or more accumulators has the advantage of a simple encoder structure. Furthermore, the resulting ensemble is asymptotically good and exhibits minimum distance growing linearly with block length. However, in practice these codes cannot be decoded by a maximum likelihood decoder, and iterative decoding schemes must be employed. For low-density parity-check codes, the notion of trapping sets has been introduced to estimate the performance of these codes under iterative message passing decoding. In this paper, we present a closed form finite l…
A linear code with parameters $[n,k,n-k]$ is said to be almost maximum distance separable (AMDS for short). An AMDS code whose dual is also AMDS is referred to as an near maximum distance separable (NMDS for short) code. NMDS codes have nice applications in finite geometry, combinatorics, cryptography and data storage. In this paper, we first present several constructions of NMDS codes and determine their weight enumerators. In particular, some constructions produce NMDS codes with the same parameters but different weight enumerators. Then we determine the locality of the NMDS codes and obtain…
We introduce a general class of codes which includes several well-known classes of deletion/insertion correcting codes as special cases. For example, the Helberg code, the Levenshtein code, the Varshamov--Tenengolts code, and most variants of these codes including most of those which have been recently used in studying DNA-based data storage systems are all special cases of our code. Then, using a number theoretic method, we give an explicit formula for the weight enumerator of our code which in turn gives explicit formulas for the weight enumerators and so the sizes of all the aforementioned …
A class of optimal three-weight cyclic codes of dimension 3 over any finite field was presented by Vega [Finite Fields Appl., 42 (2016) 23-38]. Shortly thereafter, Heng and Yue [IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, 62(8) (2016) 4501-4513] generalized this result by presenting several classes of cyclic codes with either optimal three weights or a few weights. On the other hand, a class of optimal five-weight cyclic codes of dimension 4 over a prime field was recently presented by Li, et al. [Adv. Math. Commun., 13(1) (2019) 137-156]. One of the purposes of this work is to present a more general description…
While quantum weight enumerators establish some of the best upper bounds on the minimum distance of quantum error-correcting codes, these bounds are not optimized to quantify the performance of quantum codes under the effect of arbitrary quantum channels that describe bespoke noise models. Herein, for any Kraus decomposition of any given quantum channel, we introduce corresponding quantum weight enumerators that naturally generalize the Shor-Laflamme quantum weight enumerators. We establish an indirect linear relationship between these generalized quantum weight enumerators by introducing an a…
We introduce the Symplectic Grassmann codes as projective codes defined by symplectic Grassmannians, in analogy with the orthogonal Grassmann codes introduced in [4]. Note that the Lagrangian-Grassmannian codes are a special class of Symplectic Grassmann codes. We describe the weight enumerator of the Lagrangian--Grassmannian codes of rank $2$ and $3$ and we determine the minimum distance of the line Symplectic Grassmann codes.
Short survey about code on the graph by example of hardware friendly quasi-cycle LDPC code. We consider two main properties of code: weight enumerator (well known from classic code theory) and Trapping sets pseudocodewords weight spectrum (a subgraph in code graph's which become reasone of decoding failure under Belief propagation). In paper we show fast methods to measure first components of TS enumerator using EMD=ACE constrains for high girth codes on the graph using graph spectral classification method. This approach simplify solving trouble of agreed between minimal TS pseudocode weight a…
This paper revisits the ordered statistics decoding (OSD). It provides a comprehensive analysis of the OSD algorithm by characterizing the statistical properties, evolution and the distribution of the Hamming distance and weighted Hamming distance from codeword estimates to the received sequence in the reprocessing stages of the OSD algorithm. We prove that the Hamming distance and weighted Hamming distance distributions can be characterized as mixture models capturing the decoding error probability and code weight enumerator. Simulation and numerical results show that our proposed statistical…
Families of "asymptotically regular" LDPC block code ensembles can be formed by terminating (J,K)-regular protograph-based LDPC convolutional codes. By varying the termination length, we obtain a large selection of LDPC block code ensembles with varying code rates and substantially better iterative decoding thresholds than those of (J,K)-regular LDPC block code ensembles, despite the fact that the terminated ensembles are almost regular. Also, by means of an asymptotic weight enumerator analysis, we show that minimum distance grows linearly with block length for all of the ensembles in these f…
Let $q$ be an odd prime power and let $X(m,q)$ be the set of symmetric bilinear forms on an $m$-dimensional vector space over $\mathbb{F}_q$. The partition of $X(m,q)$ induced by the action of the general linear group gives rise to a commutative translation association scheme. We give explicit expressions for the eigenvalues of this scheme in terms of linear combinations of generalised Krawtchouk polynomials. We then study $d$-codes in this scheme, namely subsets $Y$ of $X(m,q)$ with the property that, for all distinct $A,B\in Y$, the rank of $A-B$ is at least $d$. We prove bounds on the size …
Codes on hypergraphs are an extension of the well-studied family of codes on bipartite graphs. Bilu and Hoory (2004) constructed an explicit family of codes on regular t-partite hypergraphs whose minimum distance improves earlier estimates of the distance of bipartite-graph codes. They also suggested a decoding algorithm for such codes and estimated its error-correcting capability. In this paper we study two aspects of hypergraph codes. First, we compute the weight enumerators of several ensembles of such codes, establishing conditions under which they attain the Gilbert-Varshamov bound and de…
BCH codes with efficient encoding and decoding algorithms have many applications in communications, cryptography and combinatorics design. This paper studies a class of linear codes of length $ \frac{q^m-1}{2}$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ with special trace representation, where $q$ is an odd prime power. With the help of the inner distributions of some subsets of association schemes from bilinear forms associated with quadratic forms, we determine the weight enumerators of these codes. From determining some cyclotomic coset leaders $δ_i$ of cyclotomic cosets modulo $ \frac{q^m-1}{2}$, we prove that n…
In this paper the ensemble of codes formed by a serial concatenation of a repetition code with multiple accumulators connected through random interleavers is considered. Based on finite length weight enumerators for these codes, asymptotic expressions for the minimum distance and an arbitrary number of accumulators larger than one are derived using the uniform interleaver approach. In accordance with earlier results in the literature, it is first shown that the minimum distance of repeat-accumulate codes can grow, at best, sublinearly with block length. Then, for repeat-accumulate-accumulate c…

In this paper, the analysis of the performance of the concatenation of a short polar code with an outer binary linear block code is addressed from a distance spectrum viewpoint. The analysis targets the case where an outer cyclic code is employed together with an inner systematic polar code. A concatenated code ensemble is introduced placing an interleaver at the input of the polar encoder. The introduced ensemble allows deriving bounds on the achievable error rates under maximum likelihood decoding, by applying the union bound to the (expurgated) average weight enumerators. The analysis sugge…
There is a local ring $E$ of order $4,$ without identity for the multiplication, defined by generators and relations as $E=\langle a,b \mid 2a=2b=0,\, a^2=a,\, b^2=b,\,ab=a,\, ba=b\rangle.$ We study a special construction of self-orthogonal codes over $E,$ based on combinatorial matrices related to two-class association schemes, Strongly Regular Graphs (SRG), and Doubly Regular Tournaments (DRT). We construct quasi self-dual codes over $E,$ and Type IV codes, that is, quasi self-dual codes whose all codewords have even Hamming weight. All these codes can be represented as formally self-dual ad…
In the present paper we introduce and study finite point subsets of a special kind, called optimum distributions, in the n-dimensional unit cube. Such distributions are closely related with known (delta,s,n)-nets of low discrepancy. It turns out that optimum distributions have a rich combinatorial structure. Namely, we show that optimum distributions can be characterized completely as maximum distance separable codes with respect to a non-Hamming metric. Weight spectra of such codes can be evaluated precisely. We also consider linear codes and distributions and study their general properties i…
Spatially coupled turbo-like codes (SC-TCs) have been shown to have excellent decoding thresholds due to the threshold saturation effect. Furthermore, even for moderate block lengths, simulation results demonstrate very good bit error rate performance (BER) in the waterfall region. In this paper, we discuss the effect of spatial coupling on the performance of TCs in the finite block-length regime. We investigate the effect of coupling on the error-floor performance of SC-TCs by establishing conditions under which spatial coupling either preserves or improves the minimum distance of TCs. This a…
We give a new, purely coding-theoretic proof of Koch's criterion on the tetrad systems of Type II codes of length 24 using the theory of harmonic weight enumerators. This approach is inspired by Venkov's approach to the classification of the root systems of Type II lattices in R^{24}, and gives a new instance of the analogy between lattices and codes.

This work investigates linear precoding over non-singular linear channels with additive white Gaussian noise, with lattice-type inputs. The aim is to maximize the minimum distance of the received lattice points, where the precoder is subject to an energy constraint. It is shown that the optimal precoder only produces a finite number of different lattices, namely perfect lattices, at the receiver. The well-known densest lattice packings are instances of perfect lattices, however it is analytically shown that the densest lattices are not always the solution. This is a counter-intuitive result at…
By establishing a connection between bi-directional Helmholtz machines and information theory, we propose a generalized Helmholtz machine. Theoretical and experimental results show that given \textit{shallow} architectures, the generalized model outperforms the previous ones substantially.
Due to wide applications of BCH codes, the determination of their minimum distance is of great interest. However, this is a very challenging problem for which few theoretical results have been reported in the last four decades. Even for the narrow-sense primitive BCH codes, which form the most well-studied subclass of BCH codes, there are very few theoretical results on the minimum distance. In this paper, we present new results on the minimum distance of narrow-sense primitive BCH codes with special Bose distance. We prove that for a prime power $q$, the $q$-ary narrow-sense primitive BCH cod…
