The outflow problem for the viscous full two-phase flow model in a half line is investigated in the present paper. The existence, uniqueness and nonlinear stability of the steady-state are shown respectively corresponding to the supersonic, sonic or subsonic state at far field. This is different from the outflow problem for the isentropic Navier-Stokes equations, where there is no steady-state for the subsonic state. Furthermore, we obtain either exponential time decay rates for the supersonic state or algebraic time decay rates for supersonic and sonic states in weighted Sobolev spaces.

This paper is concerned with the large-time behavior of solutions to the outflow problem of full compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the half line. This is one of the series of papers by the authors on the stability of nonlinear waves to the outflow problem. We show the time asymptotic stability of degenerate (transonic) stationary solution for the general gas including ideal polytropic gas. The key point of the proof is based the new property of the degenerate stationary solution and the delicate energy estimates.
This paper is concerned with the stability of steady solutions to initial-boundary-value problems of reaction-hyperbolic systems for axonal transport. Under proper structural assumptions, we clarify the relaxation structure of the reaction-hyperbolic systems and show the time-asymptotic stability of steady solutions or relaxation boundary-layers.
By establishing an invariant set (1.11) for the Prandtl equation in Crocco transformation, we prove orbital and asymptotic stability of Blasius-like steady states against Oleinik's monotone solutions.
We investigate the large-time behavior of solutions to an outflow problem of the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the half line. The non-degenerate stationary solution is shown to be asymptotically stable under large initial perturbation with no restriction on the adiabatic exponent $γ$, provided that the boundary strength is sufficiently small. The proofs are based on the standard energy method and the crucial step is to obtain positive lower and upper bounds of the density and the temperature uniformly in time and space.
We develop a mathematical framework for determining the stability of steady states of generic nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations with periodic source terms, in one spatial dimension. We formulate an \textit{a priori} condition for the stability of such steady states, which relies only on the properties of the steady state itself. The mathematical framework is based on Bloch's theorem and Poincaré's inequality for mean-zero periodic functions. Our framework can be used for stability analysis to determine the regions in an appropriate parameter space for which steady-state solutions are stab…
We introduce a two-dimensional Keller-Segel type free boundary model for motility of eukaryotic cells on substrates. The key ingredients of this model are the Darcy law for overdamped motion of the cytoskeleton (active) gel and Hele-Shaw type boundary conditions (Young-Laplace equation for pressure and continuity of velocities). We first show that radially symmetric steady state solutions become unstable and bifurcate to traveling wave solutions. Next we establish linear and nonlinear stability of the steady states. We show that linear stability analysis is inconclusive for both steady states …
The global stability of the nonhomogeneous positive steady state solution to a diffusive Holling-Tanner predator-prey model in a heterogeneous environment is proved by using a newly constructed Lyapunov function and estimates of nonconstant steady state solutions. The techniques developed here can be adapted for other spatially heterogeneous consumer-resource models.
In this paper, we prove the stability of shear flows of Prandtl type as $ \big(U(y/\sqrtν),0\big)$ for the steady Navier-Stokes equations under a natural spectral assumption on the linearized NS operator. We develop a direct energy method combined with compact method to solve the Orr-Sommerfeld equation.
The author studies the flows of an ideal incompressible fluid in a 2-dimensional domain, and in particular questions of instability and controllability.
We prove global in time dynamical stability of steady transonic shock solutions in divergent quasi-one-dimensional nozzles. We assume neither the smallness of the relative slope of the nozzle nor the weakness of the shock. Key ingredients of the proof are an exponentially decaying energy estimate for a linearized problem together with methods from \cite{LRXX}.
We study the reaction-diffusion Lotka-Volterra predator-prey model with Dirichlet boundary condition. In the case of equal diffusion rates and equal growth rates, the synchronized steady state solution is proved to be locally asymptotically stable.
We consider the stability of the steady state of the compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations with the non-flat doping profile. We prove the global existence of classical solutions near the steady state for the large doping profile. For the small doping profile, we prove the time decay rates of the solution provided that the initial perturbation belongs to $L^p$ with $1\le p< 3/2$.
This paper is devoted to the study of nonlinear stability of steady incompressible Euler flows in two dimensions. We prove that a steady Euler flow is nonlinearly stable in $L^p$ norm of the vorticity if its stream function is a semistable solution of some semilinear elliptic problem with strictly increasing nonlinearity. The idea of the proof is to show that such a flow has strict local maximum energy among flows whose vorticities are rearrangements of a given function, with the help of an improvement version of Wolansky and Ghil's stability theorem. The result can be regarded as an extension…
We prove that the steady state of a class of multidimensional reaction-diffusion systems is asymptotically stable at the intersection of unweighted space and exponentially weighted Sobolev spaces, and pay particular attention to a special case, namely, systems of equations that arise in combustion theory. The steady-state solutions considered here are the end states of the traveling fronts associated with the systems, and thus the present results complement recent papers \cite{GLS1, GLS2, GLS3, GLSR, GLY} that study the stability of traveling fronts.
We investigate the structure and stability of the steady states for a bacterial colony model with density-suppressed motility. We treat the growth rate of bacteria as a bifurcation parameter to explore the local and global structure of the steady states. Relying on asymptotic analysis and the theory of Fredholm solvability, we derive the second-order approximate expression of the steady states. We analytically establish the stability criterion of the bifurcation solutions, and show that sufficiently large growth rate of bacteria leads to a stable uniform steady state. While the growth rate of …
A general reaction-diffusion equation with spatiotemporal delay and homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition is considered. The existence and stability of positive steady state solutions are proved via studying an equivalent reaction-diffusion system without nonlocal and delay structure and applying local and global bifurcation theory. The global structure of the set of steady states is characterized according to type of nonlinearities and diffusion coefficient. Our general results are applied to diffusive logistic growth models and Nicholson's blowflies type models.
The classical one-phase Stefan problem (without surface tension) allows for a continuum of steady state solutions, given by an arbitrary (but sufficiently smooth) domain together with zero temperature. We prove global-in-time stability of such steady states, assuming a sufficient degree of smoothness on the initial domain, but without any a priori restriction on the convexity properties of the initial shape. This is an extension of our previous result [28] in which we studied nearly spherical shapes.
In this paper, we obtain the global-in-$x$ Sobolev stability of Prandtl layer expansions for 2-D steady incompressible MHD flows with shear outer ideal MHD flows $(1,0,σ,0)$ ($σ\geq 0$) on a moving plate. It is worth noticing that in the Sobolev sense, the degeneracy of the tangential magnetic field in our result is allowed, which is much different from both the unsteady case in [25,26,27] and the steady case in [3,4].
The paper is concerned with the steady-state Burgers equation of fractional dissipation on the real line. We first prove the global existence of viscosity weak solutions to the fractal Burgers equation driven by the external force. Then the existence and uniqueness of solution with finite $H^{\fracα{2}}$ energy to the steady-state equation are established by estimating the decay of fractal Burgers' solutions. Furthermore, we show that the unique steady-state solution is nonlinearly stable, which means any viscosity weak solution of fractal Burgers equation, starting close to the steady-state s…
A thin film on a horizontal solid substrate and coated with a soluble surfactant is considered. The governing degenerate parabolic equations for the film height and the surfactant concentrations on the surface and in the bulk are derived using a lubrication approximation when gravity is taken into account. It is shown that the steady states are asymptotically stable.
We prove existence and asymptotic stability of the stationary solution for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for isentropic gas dynamics with a density dependent diffusion in a bounded interval. We present the necessary conditions to be imposed on the boundary data which ensure existence and uniqueness of the steady state, and we subsequent investigate its stability properties by means of the construction of a suitable Lyapunov functional for the system. The Saint-Venant system, modeling the dynamics of a shallow compressible fluid, fits into this general framework.
We show the $H^1$ stability of shear flows of Prandtl type: $U^ν= (U_s(y/\sqrtν),0)$, in the steady two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations, under the natural assumptions that $U_s(Y) > 0$ for $Y > 0$, $U_s(0) = 0$, and $U_s'(0) > 0$. Our result is in sharp contrast with the unsteady ones, in which at most Gevrey stability can be obtained, even under global monotonicity and concavity hypotheses. It provides the first positive answer to the inviscid limit problem in Sobolev regularity for a non-trivial class of steady Navier-Stokes flows with no-slip boundary condition.
So far existence of dissipative weak solutions for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations (i.e. weak solutions satisfying the relative energy inequality) is known only in the case of boundary conditions with non zero inflow/outflow (i.e., in particular, when the normal component of the velocity on the boundary of the ow domain is equal to zero). Most of physical applications (as ows in wind tunnels, pipes, reactors of jet engines) requires to consider non-zero inflow-outflow boundary condtions. We prove existence of dissipative weak solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in ba…
We investigate positive steady states of an indefinite superlinear reaction-diffusion equation arising from population dynamics, coupled with a nonlinear boundary condition. Both the equation and the boundary condition depend upon a positive parameter $λ$, which is inversely proportional to the diffusion rate. We establish several multiplicity results when the diffusion rate is large and analyze the asymptotic profiles and the stability properties of these steady states as the diffusion rate grows to infinity. In particular, our results show that in some cases bifurcation from zero and from in…
In this paper, we study the structurally nonlinear stability of supersonic contact discontinuities in three-dimensional compressible isentropic steady flows. Based on the weakly linear stability result and the $L^2$-estimates obtained by the authors in J. Diff. Equ. 255(2013), for the linearized problems of three-dimensional compressible isentropic steady equations at a supersonic contact discontinuity satisfying certain stability conditions, we first derive tame estimates of solutions to the linearized problem in higher order norms by exploring the behavior of vorticities. Since the supersoni…
This paper is concerned with the study of nonlinear stability of superposition of boundary layer and rarefaction wave on the two-fluid Navier-Stokes-Poisson system in the half line $\mathbb{R}_{+}=:(0,+\infty)$. On account of the quasineutral assumption and the absence of the electric field for the large time behavior, we successfully construct the boundary layer and rarefaction wave, and then we give the rigorous proofs of the stability theorems on the superposition of boundary layer and rarefaction wave under small perturbations for the corresponding initial boundary value problem of the Nav…
The Cauchy problem for the parabolic--elliptic Keller--Segel system in the whole $n$-dimensional space is studied. For this model, every constant $A \in \mathbb{R}$ is a stationary solution. The main goal of this work is to show that $A < 1$ is a stable steady state while $A > 1$ is unstable. Uniformly local Lebesgue spaces are used in order to deal with solutions that do not decay at spatial variable on the unbounded domain.
We investigate the instability and stability of some steady-states of a three-dimensional nonhomogeneous incompressible viscous flow driven by gravity in a bounded domain $Ω$ of class $C^2$. When the steady density is heavier with increasing height (i.e., the Rayleigh-Taylor steady-state), we show that the steady-state is linear unstable (i.e., the linear solution grows in time in $H^2$) by constructing a (standard) energy functional and exploiting the modified variational method. Then, by introducing a new energy functional and using a careful bootstrap argument, we further show that the stea…
We consider the Nernst-Planck-Navier-Stokes system in a bounded domain of ${\mathbb {R}}^d$, $d=2,3$ with general nonequilibrium Dirichlet boundary conditions for the ionic concentrations. We prove the existence of smooth steady state solutions and present a sufficient condition in terms of only the boundary data that guarantees that these solutions have nonzero fluid velocity. We show that time evolving solutions are ultimately bounded uniformly, independently of their initial size. In addition, we consider one dimensional steady states with steady nonzero currents and show that they are glob…
In this paper, We study an one--dimensional morphogenesis model considered by C. Stinner et al. in (Math. Meth. Appl. Sci. 2012,35 (445-465). Under homogeneous boundary conditions, we prove the existence of nonconstant positive steady states through local bifurcation theories. We also rigorously study the stability of the nonconstant solutions when the sensitivity function are chosen to be linear and logarithmic function respectively. Finally, we present numerical solutions to illustrate the formation of stable spatially inhomogeneous patterns. Our numerical simulations suggests that this mode…
We study existence and stability of steady solutions of the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations on a finite interval with non characteristic boundary conditions, for general not necessarily small-amplitude data. We show that there exists a unique solution, about which the linearized spatial operator possesses (i) a spectral gap between neutral and growing/decaying modes, and (ii) an even number of nonstable eigenvalues ? (with a nonnegative real part). In the case that there are no nonstable eigenvalues, i.e., of spectral stability, we show this solution to be nonlinearly exponenti…
This paper is concerned with the existence and stability of phase transition steady states to a quasi-linear hyperbolic-parabolic system of chemotactic aggregation, which was proposed in \cite{ambrosi2005review, gamba2003percolation} to describe the coherent vascular network formation observed {\it in vitro} experiment. Considering the system in the half line $ \mathbb{R}_{+}=(0,\infty)$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions, we first prove the existence \textcolor{black}{and uniqueness of non-constant phase transition steady states} under some structure conditions on the pressure function. Then …
For unipolar hydrodynamic model of semiconductor device represented by Euler-Poisson equations, when the doping profile is supersonic, the existence of steady transonic shock solutions and C-smooth steady transonic solutions for Euler-Poisson Equations were established in [27] and [41], respectively. In this paper we further study the nonlinear structural stability and the linear dynamic instability of these steady transonic solutions. When the C^1-smooth transonic steady-states pass through the sonic line, they produce singularities for the system, and cause some essential difficulty in the p…
We prove the existence and stability of smooth solutions to the steady Navier-Stokes equations near plane Poiseuille-Couette flow. Consequently, we also provide the zero viscosity limit of the 2D steady Navier-Stokes equations to the steady Euler equations. First, in the absence of any external force, we prove that there exist smooth solutions to the steady Navier-Stokes equations which are stable under infinitesimal perturbations of plane Poiseuille-Couette flow. In particular, if the basic flow is the Couette flow, then we can prove that the flow is stable for any finite perturbation small e…
In this note, we investigate the stability property of shear flows under the 2D stationary Navier-Stokes equations, and we obtain that the Couette flow $(y,0)$ is stable under the space of $\mathcal{D}^{1,q}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for any $1<q<\infty$ and unstable in the space of $\mathcal{D}^{1,\infty}(\mathbb{R}^2)$. A key observation is the anisotropic cut-off function. We also consider the Poiseuille flow $(y^2,0)$, which is stable in $\mathcal{D}^{1,q}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ with $\frac43<q\leq4.$
We model multi-dimensional two-phase flows of incompressible fluids in porous media using generalized Forchheimer equations and the capillary pressure. Firstly, we find a family of steady state solutions whose saturation and pressure are radially symmetric and velocities are rotation-invariant. Their properties are investigated based on relations between the capillary pressure, each phase's relative permeability and Forchheimer polynomial. Secondly, we analyze the linear stability of those steady states. The linearized system is derived and reduced to a parabolic equation for the saturation. T…
We show existence of a regular solution in Sobolev-Slobodetskii spaces to stationary transport equation with inflow boundary condition in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^2$. Our result is subject to quite general constraint on the shape of the boundary around the points where the characteristics become tangent to the boundary which applies in particular to piecewise analytical domains. Our result gives a new insight on the issue of boundary singularity for the inflow problem for stationary transport equation, solution of which is crucial for investigation of stationary compressible Navie…
We consider a space-homogeneous gas of {\it inelastic hard spheres}, with a {\it diffusive term} representing a random background forcing (in the framework of so-called {\em constant normal restitution coefficients} $α\in [0,1]$ for the inelasticity). In the physical regime of a small inelasticity (that is $α\in [α_*,1)$ for some constructive $α_* \in [0,1)$) we prove uniqueness of the stationary solution for given values of the restitution coefficient $α\in [α_*,1)$, the mass and the momentum, and we give various results on the linear stability and nonlinear stability of this stationary solut…
?In this work, we study the orbital stability of stationary solutions to the relativistic Vlasov-Manev system. This system is a kinetic model describing the evolution of a stellar system subject to its own gravity with some relativistic corrections. For this system, the orbital stability was proved for isotropic models constructed as minimizers of the Hamiltonian under a subcritical condition. We obtain here this stability for all isotropic models by a non-variationnal approach. We use here a new method developed in [23] for the classical Vlasov-Poisson system. We derive the stability from the…
For the stationary hydrodynamic model for semiconductors with sonic boundary, represented by Euler-Poisson equations, it possesses the various physical solutions including interior subsonic solutions/interior supersonic solutions/shock transonic solutions/$C^1$-smooth transonic solutions. However, the structural stability for these physical solutions is challenging and has remained open as we know. In this paper, we investigate the structural stability of interior subsonic solutions when the doping profiles are restricted in the subsonic region. The main result is proved by using the local (we…
