We interpret the exact solutions previously obtained for spherically symmetric shells of liquid fluid in General Relativity in terms of the energies involved. We show that a certain parameter that was introduced into the solutions by the interface boundary conditions is related to the binding energies of the gravitational systems. We then use this fact in order to discuss the energetic stability of those solutions.
We include in the stability discussion the well-known interior Schwarzschild solution for a liquid sphere, which can be obtained as a specific limit of the solutions that we previously obtained for the liquid shells. We show that this solution turns out to be a maximally unstable one, from the energetic point of view discussed here.
We also perform a numerical exploration of the energetic stability criterion of the solutions, and show that indeed there is a particular subset of the solutions which are energetically stable. All these solutions have the form of shells with non-vanishing internal radii. This reduces the original three-parameter family of solutions to a two-parameter family of energetically stable solutions.
The thermodynamic properties of a shell of bosons with the inner surface locating at Planck length away from the horizon of Schwarzschild black holes by using statistical mechanics are studied. The covariant partition function of bosons is obtained, from which the Bose-Einstein condensation of bosons is found at a non-zero temperature in the curved spacetimes. As a special case of bosons, we analyze the entropy of photon gas near the horizon of the Schwarzschild black hole, which shows an area dependence similar to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. The results may offer new perspectives on the s…
In this paper we consider a semitetrad covariant decomposition of spherically symmetric spacetimes and find a governing hyperbolic equation of the Gaussian curvature of two dimensional spherical shells, that emerges due to the decomposition. The restoration factor of this hyperbolic travelling wave equation allows us to construct a geometric measure of complexity. This measure depends critically on the Gaussian curvature, and we demonstrate this geometric connection to complexity for the first time. We illustrate the utility of this measure by classifying well known spherically symmetric metri…
It is shown that exact spherically symmetric solutions to Einstein's Field Equations exist such that, over an open region of the spacetime, they are singularity free, satisfy the dominant energy condition, represent elastic matter with a well defined constitutive function, and are such that elastic perturbations propagate causally. Two toy-models are then built up in which a thick elastic, spherically symmetric shell with the above properties, separates two Robertson-Walker regions corresponding to different values of the curvature $k$. The junction conditions (continuity of the first and seco…
In this paper, we construct generic, spherically symmetric thin-shell wormholes and check their stabilities using the unified dark sector, including dark energy and dark matter. We give a master equation, from which one can recover, as a special case, other stability solutions for generic spherically symmetric thin-shell wormholes. In this context, we consider a particular solution; namely we construct an effective thin-shell wormhole under Lorentz symmetry breaking. We explore stability analyses using different models of the modified Chaplygin gas with constraints from cosmological observatio…
Spherically gravitational collapse towards a black hole with non-zero tangential pressure is studied. Exact solutions corresponding to different equations of state are given. We find that when taking the tangential pressure into account, the exact solutions have three qualitatively different endings. For positive tangential pressure, the shell around a black hole may eventually collapse onto the black hole, or expand to infinity, or have a static but unstable solution, depending on the combination of black hole mass, mass of the shell and the pressure parameter. For vanishing or negative press…
We study the dynamics of charged, spherically symmetric dust shells in the presence of a positive cosmological constant. We find generalizations of the well-known solutions in asymptotically flat spacetime, in particular orbits into "parallel universes", but also new solutions corresponding to a "bounce" of the shell before an event horizon has formed. We also discuss "bubble" solutions, in which a charged shell and an oppositely charged singularity are spontaneously created and annihilated.
We consider spherically-symmetric black holes in semiclassical gravity. For a collapsing radiating thin shell we derive a sufficient condition on the exterior geometry that ensures that a black hole is not formed. This is also a sufficient condition for an infalling test particle to avoid the apparent horizon of an existing black hole and approach it only within a certain minimal distance. Taking the presence of a trapped region and its outer boundary --- the apparent horizon--- as the defining feature of black holes, we explore the consequences of their finite time of formation according to a…
We construct conformastat spherically symmetric spacetimes representing anisotropic fluid matter distributions from given solutions of the Poisson's equation of Newtonian gravity and its corresponding circular speed profile. As simple examples, we present three families of spherically symmetric spacetimes which we apply in constructing new models of relativistic anisotropic thick spherical shells, and of relativistic galaxy models composite by a central spherical bulge, the thick disk and the dark matter halo, writing in this case the metric in cylindrical coordinates. Moreover, the geodesic m…
