In this paper, we discuss gravitational collapse of spherically symmetric spacetimes. We derive a general formalism by taking two arbitrary spherically symmetric spacetimes with $g_{00}=1$. Israel's junction conditions are used to develop this formalism. The formulae for extrinsic curvature tensor are obtained. The general form of the surface energy-momentum tensor depending on extrinsic curvature tensor components is derived. This leads us to the surface energy density and the tangential pressure. The formalism is applied to two known spherically symmetric spacetimes. The results obtained show the regions for the collapse and expansion of the shell.
We revisit the gravitational collapse of spherically symmetric Lemaître - Tolman - Bondi (LTB) dust models. A sufficient condition for global visibility of singularity is given. This condition also allows us to extend the condition of local visibility to mass functions which are not Taylor expandable near the centre.
The present work investigates the gravitational collapse of a perfect fluid in $f(R)$ gravity models. For a general $f(R)$ theory, it is shown analytically that a collapse is quite possible. The singularity formed as a result of the collapse is found to be a curvature singularity of shell focusing type. The possibility of the formation of an apparent horizon hiding the central singularity depends on the initial conditions.
The aim of the present letter is to explain the `critical behaviour' observed in numerical studies of spherically symmetric gravitational collaps of a perfect fluid. A simple expression results for the critical index $γ$ of the black hole mass considered as an order parameter. $γ$ turns out to vary strongly with the parameter $k$ of the assumed equation of state $p=kρ$.
A distinguishable physical property between a naked singularity and a black-hole, formed during a gravitational collapse has important implications for both experimental and theoretical relativity. We examine the energy radiated during the spherically symmetric Gravitational collapse in this context within the framework of general relativity. It is shown that total energy radiated(Mass Loss) during the collapse ending in a naked singularity scenario cannot be more than the case when a collapse scenario ends in a black-hole. In cases of interest(for example stars having same mass, size, and int…
In the present work the collapse scenario of some exact non-spherical models with a minimally coupled scalar field is studied. Scalar field collapse with planar as well as toroidal, cylindrical and pseudoplanar symmetries have been investigated. It is shown that the scalar field may have collapsing modes even if it has the equation of state corresponding to that of a dark energy.
In this paper we present a simple but non-simplistic model of gravitational collapse with thermal emission of pre-Hawking radiation. We apply Einstein equations to a time-dependant spherically symmetric metric and an ultrarelativistic stress-energy tensor. In our model, particles either radially approach the center of the star as collapsing matter, or radially flee from it.
Recently a {\it local} true (completely gauge fixed) Hamiltonian for spherically symmetric collapse was derived in terms of Ashtekar variables. We show that such a local Hamiltonian follows directly from the geometrodynamics of gravity theories that obey a Birkhoff theorem and possess a mass function that is constant on the constraint surface in vacuum. In addition to clarifying the geometrical content, our approach has the advantage that it can be directly applied to a large class of spherically symmetric and 2D gravity theories, including $p$-th order Lovelock gravity in D dimensions. The re…
In this work, we consider a semiclassical description of the spherically symmetric gravitational collapse with a massless scalar field. In particular, we employ an effective scenario provided by holonomy corrections from loop quantum gravity, to the homogeneous interior spacetime. The singularity that would arise at the final stage of the corresponding classical collapse, is resolved in this context and is replaced by a bounce. Our main purpose is to investigate the evolution of trapped surfaces during this semiclassical collapse. Within this setting, we obtain a threshold radius for the colla…
Sijie Gao has recently investigated Hawking radiation from spherically symmetrical gravitational collapse to an extremal R-N black hole for a real scalar field. Especially he estimated the upper bound for the expected number of particles in any wave packet belonging to $\mathcal{H}_{out}$ spontaneously produced from the state $|0>_{in}$, which confirms the traditional belief that extremal black holes do not radiate particles. Making some modifications, we demonstrate that the analysis can go through for a charged scalar field.
We address the question of radiation emitted from a collapsing star. We consider the simple model of a spherical star consisting of pressure-free dust and we derive the emission spectrum via a systematic asymptotic expansion of the complete Bogolubov amplitude. We present a review of standard features of the problem and we point out certain inconsistencies in previous derivations.
We present an algorithm for the construction of conformal coordinates in the interior of a spherically symmetric, collapsing matter cloud in general relativity. This algorithm is based on the numerical integration of radial null geodesics. As an application we generate conformal diagrams for collapsing spherical dust clouds and analyze the causal structure of the resulting spacetimes.
We study the critical behaviour of spherically symmetric scalar field collapse to black holes in spacetime dimensions other than four. We obtain reliable values for the scaling exponent in the supercritical region for dimensions in the range $3.5\leq D\leq 14$. The critical exponent increases monotonically to an asymptotic value at large $D$ of $γ\sim0.466$. The data is well fit by a simple exponential of the form: $γ\sim 0.466(1-e^{-0.408 D})$.
The Riemann, Ricci and Einstein tensors for N-dimensional spherically symmetric spacetimes in various systems of coordinates are studied, and the general metric for conformally flat spacetimes is given. As an application, all the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker-like solutions for a perfect fluid with an equation of state $p = k ρ$ are found. Then, these solutions are used to model the gravitational collapse of a compact ball, by first cutting them along a timelike hypersurface and then joining them with asymptotically flat Vaidya solutions. It is found that when the collapse has continuous self-sim…
Generalizing earlier results on the initial data and the final fate of dust collapse, we study here the relevance of the initial state of a spherically symmetric matter cloud towards determining its end state in the course of a continuing gravitational collapse. It is shown that given an arbitrary regular distribution of matter at the initial epoch, there always exists an evolution from this initial data which would result either in a black hole or a naked singularity depending on the allowed choice of free functions available in the solution. It follows that given any initial density and pres…
The phase space corresponding to a particular four-parameter family of initial data for the gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric dust cloud is investigated. In a certain limit of the parameters, this family reproduces the case of homogenous mass density -constant mass distribution- and zero initial velocity, while in another limit, it generates a globally naked singularity. We show that for initial data characterizing flat density profiles, as well as large initial velocities, the probability of forming a globally naked singularity is low.
Considering gravitational collapse of matter, it is important problem to clarify what kind of conditions leads to the formation of naked singularity. For this purpose, we apply the 1+3 orthonormal frame formalism introduced by Uggla \textit{et al.} to spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of perfect fluid. This formalism allows us to construct an autonomous system of evolution and constraint equations for scale-invariant dynamical variables normalized by the volume expansion rate of the timelike orthonormal frame vector. We investigate the asymptotic evolution of such dynamical variable…
The gravitational collapse of a spherical distribution, in a class of f(R) theories of gravity, where f(R) is power function of R, is discussed. The spacetime is assumed to admit a homothetic Killing vector. In the collapsing modes, some of the situations indeed hit a singularity, but they are all covered with an apparent horizon. Some peculiar cases are observed where the collapsing body settles to a constant radius at a given value of the radial coordinate.
We utilize a recent formulation of a spherically symmetric spacetime endowed with a general decomposition of the energy momentum tensor [Phys. Rev. D, 75, 024031 (2007)] to derive equations governing spherically symmetric distributions of electromagnetic matter. We show the system reduces to the Reissner-Nordstrom spacetime in general, spherically symmetric coordinates in the vacuum limit. Furthermore, we show reduction to the charged Vaidya spacetime in non-null coordinates when certain equations of states are chosen. A model of gravitational collapse is discussed whereby a charged fluid resi…
We report on a numerical study of the spherically symmetric collapse of a self-gravitating massless scalar field. Earlier results of Choptuik(1992, 1994) are confirmed. The field either disperses to infinity or collapses to a black hole, depending on the strength of the initial data. For evolutions where the strength is close to but below the strength required to form a black hole, we argue that there will be a region close to the axis where the scalar curvature and field energy density can reach arbitrarily large levels, and which is visible to distant observers
Critical collapse of a spherically symmetric domain wall is investigated. The domain wall is made of a minimally coupled scalar field with a double well potential. We consider a sequence of the initial data which describe a momentarily static domain wall characterized by its initial radius. The time evolution is performed by a full general relativistic numerical code for spherically symmetric systems. In this paper, we use the maximal slice gauge condition, in which spacelike time slices may penetrate the black hole horizon differently from other widely used procedures. In this paper, we consi…
We investigate numerically the critical behaviour which occurs in the collapse of both spherically symmetric and asymmetric scalar field bubbles with full general relativity. We use a minimally coupled scalar field subject to a "double well" interaction potential, with the bubble wall spanning the barrier between two degenerate minima. We find that the spherically symmetric case exhibits Type 2 critical behaviour with the critical index consistent with a value of gamma = 0.37 as expected. In the asymmetric case, we find that again our results are consistent with a value of gamma = 0.37 for the…
The present paper deals with the gravitational collapse of an inhomogeneous spherical star consisting of dust fluid in the background of dark energy components with linear equation of state. We discussed the development of apparent horizon to investigate the black-hole formation in gravitational collapsing process. The collapsing process is examined first separately for dust cloud and dark energy and then under the combined effect of dust interacting with dark energy. It is obtained that when only dust cloud or dark energy is present the collapse leads to the formation of black-hole under cert…
Geometric structure of spherically-symmetric space-time in metric-affine gauge theory of gravity is studied. Restrictions on curvature tensor and Bianchi identities are obtained. By using certain simple gravitational Lagrangian the solution of gravitational equations for vacuum spherically-symmetric gravitational field is obtained.
Gravitational collapse of a class of spherically symmetric stars are investigated. We quantise the geometries describing the gravitational collapse by a deformation quantisation procedure. This gives rise to noncommutative spacetimes with gravitational collapse.
It is shown that a scalar field, minimally coupled to gravity may have collapsing modes even when the energy condition is violated, that is, for $(ρ+3p)<0$. This result may be useful in the investigation of the possible clustering of dark energy. All the examples dealt with have apparent horizons which form before the formation of the singularity. The singularities formed are shell focusing in nature. The density of the scalar field distribution is seen to diverge at singularity. The Ricci scalar also diverges at the singularity. The interior spherically symmetric metric is matched with exteri…
We review results on the spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat Einstein-Vlasov system. We focus on a recent result where we found explicit conditions on the initial data which guarantee the formation of a black hole in the evolution. Among these data there are data such that the corresponding solutions exist globally in Schwarzschild coordinates. We put these results into a more general context, and we include arguments which show that the spacetimes we obtain satisfy the weak cosmic censorship conjecture and contain a black hole in the sense of suitable mathematical definitions of these …
We carry out numerical simulations of the gravitational collapse of a perfect fluid with the ultrarelativistic equation of state $P=κρ$, in spherical symmetry in $2+1$ spacetime dimensions with $Λ<0$. At the threshold of prompt collapse, we find type II critical phenomena (apparent horizon mass and maximum curvature scale as powers of distance from the threshold) for $κ\gtrsim 0.43$, and type I critical phenomena (lifetime scales as logarithm of distance from the threshold) for $κ\lesssim 0.42$. The type I critical solution is static, while the type II critical solution is not self-similar (as…
We study the complete gravitational collapse of a class of spherically symmetric inhomogeneous perfect fluid models obtained by introducing small radial perturbations in an otherwise homogeneous matter cloud. Our aim here is to study the genericity and stability of the formation of black holes and locally naked singularities in collapse. While the occurrence of naked singularities is known for many models of collapse, the key issue now in focus is genericity and stability of these outcomes. Towards this purpose, we study how the introduction of a somewhat general class of small inhomogeneities…
Analytic spherically symmetric solutions of the Einstein field equations coupled with a perfect fluid and with self-similarities of the zeroth, first and second kinds, found recently by Benoit and Coley [Class. Quantum Grav. {\bf 15}, 2397 (1998)], are studied, and found that some of them represent gravitational collapse. When the solutions have self-similarity of the first (homothetic) kind, some of the solutions may represent critical collapse but in the sense that now the "critical" solution separates the collapse that forms black holes from the collapse that forms naked singularities. The …
We propose a new test of Einstein's theory of gravitation. It concerns the velocity distribution of low-energy particles in a spherically symmetric gravitational field.
Formulating a perfect fluid filled spherically symmetric metric utilizing the 3+1 formalism for general relativity, we show that the metric coefficients are completely determined by the mass-energy distribution, and its time rate of change on an initial spacelike hypersurface. Rather than specifying Schwarzschild coordinates for the exterior of the collapsing region, we let the interior dictate the form of the solution in the exterior, and thus both regions are found to be written in one coordinate patch. This not only alleviates the need for complicated matching schemes at the interface, but …
We investigate here the locally naked singularity formed due to a spherically symmetric inhomogeneous collapsing cloud having non-zero isotropic pressure, in terms of its strength. Sufficient condition provided by Clarke and Krolak for it to be Tipler strong has been used to restrict the parameters that represent the non-linear relation between the physical radius and the radial coordinate of the outgoing radial null geodesic at the singular center. Studying end state of a collapsing cloud requires information about the dynamics of collapse, which is unknown in a general scenario. Hence we stu…
Quantum gravity effects are likely to play a crucial role in determining the outcome of gravitational collapse during its final stages. In this contribution we will outline a canonical quantization of the LeMaitre-Tolman-Bondi models, which describe the collapse of spherical, inhomogeneous, non-rotating dust. Although there are many models of gravitational collapse, this particular class of models stands out for its simplicity and the fact that both black holes and naked singularity end states may be realized on the classical level, depending on the initial conditions. We will obtain the appro…
We numerically simulate gravitational collapse in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes away from spherical symmetry. Starting from initial data sourced by a massless real scalar field, we solve the Einstein equations with a negative cosmological constant in five spacetime dimensions and obtain a family of non-spherically symmetric solutions, including those that form two distinct black holes on the axis. We find that these configurations collapse faster than spherically symmetric ones of the same mass and radial compactness. Similarly, they require less mass to collapse within a fixed time…
Some dynamical aspects of gravitational collapse are explored in this paper. A time-dependent spherically symmetric metric is proposed and the corresponding Einstein field equations are derived. An ultrarelativistic dust-like stress-momentum tensor is considered to obtain analytical solutions of these equations, with a perfect fluid consisting of two purely radial fluxes -the inwards flux of collapsing matter and the outwards flux of thermally emitted radiation. Thermal emission is calculated by means of a simplistic but illustrative model of unintercting collapsing shells. Our results show an…
Given a static Schwarzschild spacetime of ADM mass M, it is well-known that no ingoing causal geodesic starting in the outer domain r>2M will cross the event horizon r=2M in finite Schwarzschild time. In the present paper we show that in gravitational collapse of Vlasov matter this behaviour can be very different. We construct initial data for which a black hole forms and all matter crosses the event horizon as Schwarzschild time goes to infinity, and we show that this is a necessary condition for geodesic completeness of the event horizon. In addition to a careful analysis of the asymptotic b…
We investigate the spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of an incoherent dust cloud by considering a LTB type space-time in third order Lovelock Gravity without cosmological constant, and give three families of LTB-like solutions which separately corresponding to hyperbolic, parabolic and elliptic. Notice that the contribution of high order curvature corrections have a profound influence on the nature of the singularity, and the global structure of space-time changes drastically from the analogous general relativistic case. Interestingly, the presence of high order Lovelock terms leads…
In a recent paper we showed that the collapse to a black hole in one-parameter families of initial data for massless, minimally coupled scalar fields in spherically symmetric semi-classical loop quantum gravity exhibited a universal mass scaling similar to the one in classical general relativity. In particular, no evidence of a mass gap appeared as had been suggested by previous studies. The lack of a mass gap indicated the possible existence of a self-similar critical solution as in general relativity. Here we provide further evidence for its existence. Using an adaptive mesh refinement code,…
Static spherically symmetric solution in a background spacetime with torsion is derived explicitly. The torsion considered here is identified with the field strength of a second rank antisymmetric tensor field namely the Kalb-Ramond field and the proposed solution therefore has much significance in a string inspired gravitational field theory.
We consider the dynamical stability of a class of static, spherically-symmetric solutions of the nonsymmetric gravitational theory. We numerically reproduce the Wyman solution and generate new solutions for the case where the theory has a nontrivial fundamental length scale μ^{-1}. By considering spherically symmetric perturbations of these solutions we show that the Wyman solutions are generically unstable.
We study collapse of evaporating spherically-symmetric thin dust shells and dust balls assuming that quantum effects are encapsulated in a spherically-symmetric metric that satisfied mild regularity conditions. The evaporation may accelerate collapse, but for a generic metric the Schwarzschild radius is not crossed. Instead the shell (or the layer in the ball of dust) is always at a certain sub-Planckian distance from it.
We solve the coupled Einstein-Vlasov system in spherical symmetry using direct numerical integration of the Vlasov equation in phase space. Focusing on the case of massless particles we study critical phenomena in the model, finding strong evidence for generic type I behaviour at the black hole threshold that parallels what has previously been observed in the massive sector. For differing families of initial data we find distinct critical solutions, so there is no universality of the critical configuration itself. However we find indications of at least a weak universality in the lifetime scal…
A new numerical framework, based on the use of a simple first order strongly hyperbolic evolution equations, is introduced and tested in case of 4-dimensional spherically symmetric gravitating systems. The analytic setup is chosen such that our numerical method is capable to follow the time evolution even after the appearance of trapped surfaces, more importantly, until the true physical singularities are reached. Using this framework, the gravitational collapse of various gravity-matter systems are investigated, with distinguished attention to the evolution in trapped regions. It is justified…
A canonical formalism for spherical symmetry, originally developed by Kuchař to describe vacuum Schwarzschild black holes, is extended to include a spherically symmetric, massless, scalar field source. By introducing the ADM mass as a canonical coordinate on phase space, one finds that the super-Hamiltonian and supermomentum constraints for the coupled system simplify considerably. Yet, despite this simplification, it is difficult to find a functional time formalism for the theory. First, the configuration variable that played the role of time for the vacuum theory is no longer a spacetime sca…
We present results from a numerical study of critical gravitational collapse of axisymmetric distributions of massless scalar field energy. We find threshold behavior that can be described by the spherically symmetric critical solution with axisymmetric perturbations. However, we see indications of a growing, non-spherical mode about the spherically symmetric critical solution. The effect of this instability is that the small asymmetry present in what would otherwise be a spherically symmetric self-similar solution grows. This growth continues until a bifurcation occurs and two distinct region…
Gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric cloud has been extensively studied to investigate the nature of resulting singularity. However, there has been considerable debate about the admissibility of certain initial density distributions. Using the Newtonian limit of the equations governing collapse of a fluid with an equation of state p=p(ρ) it is shown that the density distribution has to be even function of r in a spherically symmetric situation provided dp/dρ\ne 0, even in comoving coordinates. We show that recent claim by Singh that the discrepancy pointed out earlier is due to th…
Using the geodesic method and the perturbative approach, we study the deflection of light by time-periodic spherically symmetric gravitational fields. Assuming the weakness of the gravitational field, we derive general formulas that determine the deflection angle in the leading order approximation. The formulas are valid for both time-periodic and static metrics. Using these results, we calculate the deflection angle of a light ray passing through a spherically symmetric oscillating distribution of a self-gravitating scalar field with a logarithmic potential. It turned out that in this case th…
Given spherically symmetric characteristic initial data for the Einstein-scalar field system with a positive cosmological constant, we provide a criterion, in terms of the dimensionless size and dimensionless renormalized mass content of an annular region of the data, for the formation of a future trapped surface. This corresponds to an extension of Christodoulou's classical criterion by the inclusion of the cosmological term.
We give a model of the higher-dimensional spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of a dust cloud in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. A simple formulation of the basic equations is given for the spacetime $M \approx M^2 \times K^{n-2}$ with a perfect fluid and a cosmological constant. This is a generalization of the Misner-Sharp formalism of the four-dimensional spherically symmetric spacetime with a perfect fluid in general relativity. The whole picture and the final fate of the gravitational collapse of a dust cloud differ greatly between the cases with $n=5$ and $n \ge 6$. There are two …
We consider spherically-symmetric black holes in semiclassical gravity. For a collapsing radiating thin shell we derive a sufficient condition on the exterior geometry that ensures that a black hole is not formed. This is also a sufficient condition for an infalling test particle to avoid the apparent horizon of an existing black hole and approach it only within a certain minimal distance. Taking the presence of a trapped region and its outer boundary --- the apparent horizon--- as the defining feature of black holes, we explore the consequences of their finite time of formation according to a…
In this work we will analyse the complexity factor, proposed by L. Herrera, for spherically symmetric static matter distributions satisfying a polytropic equation through the gravitational decoupling method. Specifically, we will use the 2-step GD, which is a particular case of the extended geometric deformation (EGD), to obtain analytic polytropic solutions of Einstein's equations. In order to give an example, we construct a model satisfying a polytropic equation of state using Tolman IV as a seed solution.
In this paper, we investigate spherically symmetric perfect fluid gravitational collapse in metric $f(R)$ gravity. We take non-static spherically symmetric metric in the interior region and static spherically symmetric metric in the exterior region of a star. The junction conditions between interior and exterior spacetimes are derived. The field equations in f(R) theory are solved using the assumption of constant Ricci scalar. Inserting their solution into junction conditions, the gravitational mass is found. Further, the apparent horizons and their time of formation is discussed. We conclude …
We consider the spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat Einstein-Vlasov system. We find explicit conditions on the initial data, with ADM mass M, such that the resulting spacetime has the following properties: there is a family of radially outgoing null geodesics where the area radius r along each geodesic is bounded by 2M, the timelike lines $r=c\in [0,2M]$ are incomplete, and for r>2M the metric converges asymptotically to the Schwarzschild metric with mass M. The initial data that we construct guarantee the formation of a black hole in the evolution. We also give examples of such initial…
We express Einstein's field equations for a spherically symmetric ball of general fluid such that they are conducive to an initial value problem. We show how the equations reduce to the Vaidya spacetime in a non-null coordinate frame, simply by designating specific equations of state. Furthermore, this reduces to the Schwarzschild spacetime when all matter variables vanish. We then describe the formulation of an initial value problem, whereby a general fluid ball with vacuum exterior is established on an initial spacelike slice. As the system evolves, the fluid ball collapses and emanates null…
Stochastic perturbations (radial) of a spherically symmetric relativistic star, modeled by a perfect fluid in comoving coordinates for the collapse scenario are worked out using the classical Einstein- Langevin equation, which has been proposed recently. The solutions are in terms of perturbed metric potentials and their two point correlation. For the case worked out here, it is interesting to note that the two perturbed metric potentials have same magnitude, while the potentials themselves are in general independent of each other. Such a treatment is useful for building up basic theory of non…
In Schwarzschild spacetime the value $r=3m$ of the radius coordinate is characterized by three different properties: (a) there is a ``light sphere'', (b) there is ``centrifugal force reversal'', (c) it is the upper limiting radius for a non-transparent Schwarschild source to act as a gravitational lens that produces infinitely many images. In this paper we prove a theorem to the effect that these three properties are intimately related in {\em any} spherically symmetric static spacetime. We illustrate the general results with some examples including black-hole spacetimes and Morris-Thorne worm…
In this work we construct a static and spherically symmetric black hole geometry supported by a family of generic mono-parametric sources thorough the Gravitational Decoupling. The parameter characterizing the matter sector can be interpreted as hair which cannot be associated to any global charge. Although the solution is constructed by demanding the weak energy condition, we find that the resulting matter sector satisfies all the energy conditions at and outside the horizon. We study the effect of the hair on the periastron advance and the gravitational lensing of the black hole. We estimate…
