The paper considers subspaces of the strictly upper triangular matrices, which are stable under Lie bracket with any upper triangular matrix. These subspaces are called ad-nilpotent ideals and there are Catalan number of such subspaces. Each ad-nilpotent ideal meets a unique largest nilpotent orbit in the Lie algebra of all matrices. The main result of the paper is that under an equivalence relation on ad-nilpotent ideals studied by Mizuno and others, the equivalence classes are the ad-nilpotent ideals with the same largest nilpotent orbit. We include two applications of the result, one to the higher vanishing of cohomology groups of vector bundles on the flag variety and another to the Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in the affine Weyl group of the symmetric group. Finally, some combinatorial results are discussed.
n this paper we study ad-nilpotent ideals of a complex simple Lie algebra $\ccg$ and their connections with affine Weyl groups and nilpotent orbits. We define a left equivalence relation for ad-nilpotent ideals based on their normalizer and generators, and prove that the equivalence relation is compatible with the left cell structure of affine Weyl group of $\ccg$ and Lusztig's star operator for type $\tilde A_{n-1}$.

It was shown by Cellini and Papi that an ad-nilpotent ideal determines certain element of the affine Weyl group, and that there is a bijection between the ad-nilpotent ideals and the integral points of a simplex with rational vertices. We give a description of the generators of ad-nilpotent ideals in terms of these elements, and show that an ideal has $k$ generators if and only it lies on the face of this simplex of codimension $k$. We also consider two combinatorial statistics on the set of ad-nilpotent ideals: the number of simple roots in the ideal and the number of generators. Considering …
Let $\be$ be a Borel subalgebra of a complex simple Lie algebra $\g$. An ideal of $\be$ is called ad-nilpotent, if it is contained in $[\be,\be]$. We give several descriptions of the normalizer of an ad-nilpotent ideal: using the weight of an ideal, or the affine Weyl group, or a relationship with dominant regions of the Shi arrangement. We also give a description of those ideals whose normalizer is equal to $\be$. For sl(n) and sp(2n), explicit enumerative results are obtained, which demonstrate a connection with some famous integer sequences.
We give formulas for the number of ad-nilpotent ideals of a Borel subalgebra of a Lie algebra of type B or D containing a fixed number of root spaces attached to simple roots. This result solves positively a conjecture of Panyushev (cf. D. Panyushev, ad-nilpotent ideals: generators and duality, J. of Alg., to appear) and affords a complete knowledge of the above statistics for any simple Lie algebra. We also study the restriction of the above statistics to the abelian ideals of a Borel subalgebra, obtaining uniform results for any simple Lie algebra.
We consider ad-nilpotent ideals of a Borel subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra. The goal of this paper is two-fold. First, we study the ad-nilpotent ideals lying inside the Heisenberg ideal. The Heisenberg ideal is the nilpotent radical of the centralizer of the highest root vector. Second, we study the ideals having the property that the corresponding domain of the Shi arrangement consists of a single alcove. Such ideals (and the corresponding elements of the affine Weyl group) are called minimax.
We introduce two polynomials (in $q$) associated with a finite poset $P$ that encode some information on the covering relation in $P$. If $P$ is a distributive lattice, and hence $P$ is isomorphic to the poset of dual order ideals in a poset $L$, then these polynomials coincide and the coefficient of $q$ equals the number of $k$-element antichains in $L$. In general, these two covering polynomials are different, and we introduce a deviation polynomial of $P$, which measures the difference between these two. We then compute all these polynomials in the case, where $P$ is one of the posets assoc…
Using GAP4, we determine the number of ad-nilpotent and abelian ideals of a parabolic subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra of exceptional types E, F or G.
We provide an explicit bijection between the ad-nilpotent ideals of a Borel subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra g and the orbits of \check{Q}/(h+1)\check{Q} under the Weyl group (\check{Q} being the coroot lattice and h the Coxeter number of g). From this result we deduce in a uniform way a counting formula for the ad-nilpotent ideals.
We classify completely prime primitive ideals whose associated varieties are the closure of the minimal nilpotent orbit of $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sl}(n,\mathbb{C})$, and classify irreducible $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{k})$-modules which have those ideals as annihilators. Moreover, we irreducibly decompose them as $\mathfrak{k}$-modules.
This paper is devoted to a detailed study of certain remarkable posets which form a natural partition of all abelian ideals of a Borel subalgebra. Our main result is a nice uniform formula for the dimension of maximal ideals in these posets. We also obtain results on ad-nilpotent ideals which complete the analysis started in \cite{CP2}, \cite{CP3}.
We extend the results of Cellini-Papi on the characterizations of nilpotent and abelian ideals of a Borel subalgebra to parabolic subalgebras of a simple Lie algebra. These characterizations are given in terms of elements of the affine Weyl group and faces of alcoves. In the case of a parabolic subalgebra of a classical Lie algebra, we give formulas for the number of these ideals.
In this paper, we give upper bounds for the index of the quotient of the Borel subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra or its nilpotent radical by an ad-nilpotent ideal. For the nilpotent radical quotient, our bound is a generalization of the formula for the index given by Panov in the type A case. In general, this bound is not exact. Using results from Panov, we show that the upper bound for the Borel quotient is exact in the type $A$ case, and we conjecture that it is exact in general.
Let $G$ be a nilpotent-by-finite compact $p$-adic analytic group for some $p>2$, and $H = \mathbf{FN}_p(G)$ its finite-by-(nilpotent $p$-valuable) radical. Fix a finite field $k$ of characteristic $p$, and write $kG$ for the completed group ring of $G$ over $k$. We show that almost faithful $G$-stable prime ideals $P$ of $kH$ extend to prime ideals $PkG$ of $kG$.
We prove that any finite W-algebra U(g,e) admits a one-dimensional representation fixed by the action of the component group of the centraliser of e. As a consequence, for any nilpotent orbit O in g there exists a multiplicity-free (and hence completely prime) primitive ideal of the universal enveloping algebra U(g) whose associated variety coincides with the Zariski closure of O.
We extend the Shi bijection from the Borel subalgebra case to parabolic subalgebras. In the process, the $I$-deleted Shi arrangement $\texttt{Shi}(I)$ naturally emerges. This arrangement interpolates between the Coxeter arrangement $\texttt{Cox}$ and the Shi arrangement $\texttt{Shi}$, and breaks the symmetry of $\texttt{Shi}$ in a certain symmetrical way. Among other things, we determine the characteristic polynomial $χ(\texttt{Shi}(I), t)$ of $\texttt{Shi}(I)$ explicitly for $A_{n-1}$ and $C_n$. More generally, let $\texttt{Shi}(G)$ be an arbitrary arrangement between $\texttt{Cox}$ and $\te…
We introduce and study a transfer map between ideals of the universal enveloping algebras of two members of a reductive dual pair of Lie algebras. Its definition is motivated by the approach to the real Howe duality through the theory of Capelli identities. We prove that this map provides a lower bound on the annihilators of theta lifts of representations with a fixed annihilator ideal. We also show that in the algebraic stable range, transfer respects the class of quantizations of nilpotent orbit closures. As an application, we explicitly describe quantizations of small nilpotent orbits of ge…
We prove a refinement of Ado's theorem for Lie algebras over an algebraically-closed field of characteristic zero. We first define what it means for a Lie algebra $L$ to be approximated with a nilpotent ideal, and we then use such an approximation to construct a faithful representation of $L$. The better the approximation, the smaller the degree of the representation will be. We obtain, in particular, explicit and combinatorial upper bounds for the minimal degree of a faithful $L$-representation. The proofs use the universal enveloping algebra of Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt and the almost-algebraic…
Given a $p$-adic field $K$ and a nilpotent uniform pro-$p$ group $G$, we prove that all primitive ideals in the $K$-rational Iwasawa algebra $KG$ are maximal, and can be reduced to a particular standard form. Setting $\mathcal{L}$ as the associated $\mathbb{Z}_p$-Lie algebra of $G$, our approach is to study the action of $KG$ on a Dixmier module $\widehat{D(λ)}$ over the affinoid envelope $\widehat{U(\mathcal{L})}_K$, and to prove that all primitive ideals can be reduced to annihilators of modules of this form.
Let $\be$ be a Borel subalgebra of a complex simple Lie algebra $\g$. An ideal of $\be$ is called ad-nilpotent, if it is contained in $[\be,\be]$. The generators of an ad-nilpotent ideal give rise to an antichain in the poset of positive roots, and the whole theory can be expressed in a combinatorial fashion, in terms of antichains. The aim of this paper is to present a refinement of the enumerative theory of ad-nilpotent ideals for the case in which $\g$ has roots of different length. An antichain is called short, if it consists of short roots. We obtain, for short antichains, analogues of al…
In this article we prove that there exists a Dixmier map for nilpotent super Lie algebras. In other words, if we denote by Prim(U(g)) the set of (graded) primitive ideals of the enveloping algebra U(g) of g and Ad_0 the adjoint group of g_0, we prove that the usual Dixmier map for nilpotent Lie algebras can be naturally extended to the context of nilpotent super Lie algebras, i.e. there exists a bijective map \[ I : g_0^*/Ad_0 \rightarrow Prim(U(g)), \] defined by sending the equivalence class [lambda] of a functional lambda to a primitive ideal I(lambda) of U(g), and which coincides with the …
We determine the space of primary ideals in the group algebra $L^1(G)$ of a connected nilpotent Lie group by identifying for every $π\in\hat G $ the family ${\mathcal I}^π$ of primary ideals with hull $\{π\}$ with the family of invariant polynomials of a certain finite dimensional subspace ${\mathcal P}_Q^π$ of the space of polynomials ${\mathcal P}(G) $ on $G $.
We study general properties of quantisations of Slodowy slices and discuss in detail the case of the minimal nilpotent orbit. Associated varieties of related primitive ideals of U(g) are determined, in the general case, and the de Vos-van Driel conjecture on Verma modules for finite W-algebras is proved in the minimal nilpotent case.
Let $\mathfrak{n}$ be a locally nilpotent infinite-dimensional Lie algebra over $\mathbb{C}$. Let $\mathrm{U}(\mathfrak{n})$ and $\mathrm{S}(\mathfrak{n})$ be its universal enveloping algebra and its symmetric algebra respectively. Consider the Jacobson topology on the primitive spectrum of $\mathrm{U}(\mathfrak{n})$ and the Poisson topology on the primitive Poisson spectrum of $\mathrm{S}(\mathfrak{n})$. We provide a homeomorphism between the corresponding topological spaces (on the level of points, it gives a bijection between the primitive ideals of $\mathrm{U}(\mathfrak{n})$ and $\mathrm{S…
Let $G$ be a semisimple algebraic group with Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$. For a nilpotent $G$-orbit $\mathcal O\subset\mathfrak g$, let $d_\mathcal O$ denote the maximal dimension of a subspace $V\subset \mathfrak g$ that is contained in the closure of $\mathcal O$. In this note, we prove that $d_\mathcal O \le \frac{1}{2}\dim\mathcal O$ and this upper bound is attained if and only if $\mathcal O$ is a Richardson orbit. Furthermore, if $V$ is $B$-stable and $\dim V= \frac{1}{2}\dim\mathcal O$, then $V$ is the nilradical of a polarisation of $\mathcal O$. Every nilpotent orbit closure has a disti…
In this paper, it is established that quantum nilpotent algebras (also known as CGL extensions) are catenary, i.e., all saturated chains of inclusions of prime ideals between any two given prime ideals $P \subsetneq Q$ have the same length. This is achieved by proving that the prime spectra of these algebras have normal separation, and then establishing the mild homological conditions necessary to apply a result of Lenagan and the first author. The work also recovers the Tauvel height formula for quantum nilpotent algebras, a result that was first obtained by Lenagan and the authors through a …
We study ad-nilpotent ideals of a parabolic subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra. Any such ideal determines an antichain in a set of positive roots of the simple Lie algebra. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for an antichain to determine an ad-nilpotent ideal of the parabolic. We write down all such antichains for the classical simple Lie algebras and in particular recover the results of D. Peterson. In section 2 of the paper we study the unique ideal in a parabolic which is irreducible as a module for the reductive part and give several equivalent statements that are satisfied by th…
Let $\mathcal{O}$ be a Richardson nilpotent orbit in a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ over $\mathbb C$, induced from a Levi subalgebra whose simple roots are orthogonal short roots. The main result of the paper is a description of a minimal set of generators of the ideal defining $\overline{ \mathcal{O}}$ in $S \mathfrak{g}^*$. In such cases, the ideal is generated by bases of at most two copies of the representation whose highest weight is the dominant short root, along with some fundamental invariants. This extends Broer's result for the subregular nilpotent orbit. Along the way we give a…
We prove that all finite W-algebras associated with nilpotent elements e in a complex semisimple Lie algebra g have finite-dimensional representations. In order to obtain this result we establish a connection between primitive ideals of U(g) attached to the nilpotent orbit containing e and finite-dimensional representations of the reduced enveloping algebra assiciated with e over an algebraically closed field of finite characteristic.
Let $G$ be a simply connected, nilpotent Lie group with Lie algebra $\gee$. The group $G$ acts on the dual space $\gee^*$ by the coadjoint action. %% which partitions $\gee^*$ into coadjoint orbits. By the orbit method of Kirillov, the simple unitary representations of $G$ are in bijective correspondence with the coadjoint orbits in $\gee^*$, which in turn are in bijective correspondence with the primitive ideals of the universal enveloping algebra of $\gee$. The number of simple $\gee$-modules which have a common eigenvector for a particular subalgebra of $\gee$ and are annihilated by a parti…
The aim of our paper is to construct pseudo $H$-type algebras from the covering free nilpotent two-step Lie algebra as the quotient algebra by an ideal. We propose an explicit algorithm of construction of such an ideal by making use of a non-degenerate scalar product. Moreover, as a bypass result, we recover the existence of a rational structure on pseudo $H$-type algebras, which implies the existence of lattices on the corresponding pseudo $H$-type Lie groups. Our approach substantially uses combinatorics and reveals the interplay of pseudo $H$-type algebras with combinatorial and orthogonal …
We study the quotient Q_i(A) of a free algebra A by the ideal M_i(A) generated by relation that the i-th commutator of any elements is zero. In particular, we completely describe such quotient for i=4 (for i<=3 this was done previously by Feigin and Shoikhet). We also study properties of the ideals M_i(A), e.g. when M_i(A)M_j(A) is contained in M_{i+j-1}(A) (by a result of Gupta and Levin, it is always contained in M_{i+j-2}(A)).
Let g be a simple Lie algebra, with fixed Borel subalgebra b and with Weyl group W. Expanding on previous work of Fan and Stembridge in the simply laced case, this note aims to study the fully commutative elements of W, and their connections with the spherical nilpotent orbits in g. If g is not of type G_2, it is shown that an element w in W is fully commutative if and only if the subalgebra of b determined by the inversions of w lies in the closure of a spherical nilpotent orbit. A similar characterization is also given for the ad-nilpotent ideals of b, which are parametrized by suitable elem…
We consider a lifting of Joseph ideals for the minimal nilpotent orbit closure to the setting of affine Kac-Moody algebras and find new examples of affine vertex algebras whose associated varieties are minimal nilpotent orbit closures. As an application we obtain a new family of lisse ($C_2$-cofinite) W-algebras that are not coming from admissible representations of affine Kac-Moody algebras.
Let $N$ be a simply connected, connected non-commutative nilpotent Lie group with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{n}$ having rational structure constants. We assume that $N=P\rtimes M,$ $M$ is commutative, and for all $λ\in \mathfrak{n}^{\ast}$ in general position the subalgebra $\mathfrak{p}=\log(P)$ is a polarization ideal subordinated to $λ$ ($\mathfrak{p}$ is a maximal ideal satisfying $[\mathfrak{p},\mathfrak{p}]\subseteq\kerλ$ for all $λ$ in general position and $\mathfrak{p}$ is necessarily commutative.) Under these assumptions, we prove that there exists a discrete uniform subgroup $Γ\subset N$…
Let $G$ be a compact $p$-adic analytic group. We recall the well-understood finite radical $Δ^+$ and FC-centre $Δ$, and introduce a $p$-adic analogue of Roseblade's subgroup $\mathrm{nio}(G)$, the unique largest orbitally sound open normal subgroup of $G$. Further, when $G$ is nilpotent-by-finite, we introduce the finite-by-(nilpotent $p$-valuable) radical $\mathbf{FN}_p(G)$, an open characteristic subgroup of $G$ contained in $\mathrm{nio}(G)$. By relating the already well-known theory of isolators with Lazard's notion of $p$-saturations, we introduce the isolated lower central (resp. isolate…
Let $H$ be a finite dimensional pointed rank one Hopf algebra of nilpotent type. We first determine all finite dimensional indecomposable $H$-modules up to isomorphism, and then establish the Clebsch-Gordan formulas for the decompositions of the tensor products of indecomposable $H$-modules by virtue of almost split sequences. The Green ring $r(H)$ of $H$ will be presented in terms of generators and relations. It turns out that the Green ring $r(H)$ is commutative and is generated by one variable over the Grothendieck ring $G_0(H)$ of $H$ modulo one relation. Moreover, $r(H)$ is Frobenius and …
Let p be a prime, K a p-adic field, G a nilpotent, uniform pro-p group. We prove that all faithful, primitive ideals in the Iwasawa algebra KG are controlled by the centraliser of the second term in the upper central series for G.
Let $g$ be a finite dimensional complex reductive Lie algebra and <.,.> an invariant non degenerated bilinear form on $g\times g$ which extends the Killing form of $[g,g]$. We define a subcomplex $E\_{\bullet}(g)$ of the canonical complex $C\_{\bullet}(g)$ of $g$. There exists a well defined sub-module $B\_{g}$ of the module of polynomial maps from $g\times g$ to $g$ which is free of rank equal to the dimension b of the borel subalgebras of $g$. Moreover, $B\_{g}$ is contained in the space of cycles of the canonical complex of $g$. The complex $E\_{\bullet}(g)$ is the ideal of $C\_{\bullet}(g)…
Let A be a finite dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field with the radical nilpotent of index 2. It is shown that A has finitely many conjugacy classes of left ideals if and only if A is of finite representation type provided that all simple A-modules have dimension at least 6. This is a revised version.
Let $N$ be a simply connected, connected nilpotent Lie group with the following assumptions. Its Lie Lie algebra $\mathfrak{n}$ is an $n$-dimensional vector space over the reals. Moreover, $\mathfrak{n=z}\oplus\mathfrak{b}\oplus\mathfrak{a}$, $\mathfrak{z}$ is the center of $\mathfrak{n}$, $\mathfrak{z} =\mathbb{R}Z_{n-2d}\oplus\mathbb{R}Z_{n-2d-1}\oplus\cdots\oplus \mathbb{R}Z_{1}, \mathfrak{b} =\mathbb{R}Y_{d}\oplus\mathbb{R} Y_{d-1}\oplus\cdots\oplus\mathbb{R}Y_{1}, \mathfrak{a} =\mathbb{R}X_{d}\oplus\mathbb{R}X_{d-1}\oplus\cdots\oplus \mathbb{R}X_{1}.$ Next, assume $\mathfrak{z}\oplus\math…
We study the topology of orbits of dynamical systems defined by finite-dimensional representations of nilpotent Lie groups. Thus, the following dichotomy is established: either the interior of the set of regular points is dense in the representation space, or the complement of the set of regular points is dense, and then the interior of that complement is either empty or dense in the representation space. The regular points are by definition the points whose orbits are locally compact in their relative topology. We thus generalize some results from the recent literature on linear actions of ab…
A finite-dimensional Lie algebra $L$ over a field $F$ is called an $A$-algebra if all of its nilpotent subalgebras are abelian. This is analogous to the concept of an $A$-group: a finite group with the property that all of its Sylow subgroups are abelian. These groups were first studied in the 1940s by Philip Hall, and are still studied today. Rather less is known about $A$-algebras, though they have been studied and used by a number of authors. The purpose of this paper is to obtain more detailed results on the structure of solvable Lie $A$-algebras. It is shown that they split over each term…
