In this manuscript, we report strong linear correlation between shifted velocity and line width of the broad blue-shifted [OIII] components in SDSS quasars. Broad blue-shifted [OIII] components are commonly treated as indicators of outflows related to central engine, however, it is still an open question whether the outflows are related to central accretion properties or related to local physical properties of NLRs (narrow emission line regions). Here, the reported strong linear correlation with the Spearman Rank correlation coefficient 0.75 can be expected under the assumption of AGN (active galactic nuclei) feedback driven outflows, through a large sample of 535 SDSS quasars with reliable blue-shifted broad [OIII] components. Moreover, there are much different detection rates for broad blue-shifted and broad red-shifted [OIII] components in quasars, and no positive correlation can be found between shifted velocity and line width of the broad red-shifted [OIII] components, which provide further and strong evidence to reject possibility of local outflows in NLRs leading to the broad blue-shifted [OIII] components in quasars. Thus, the strong linear correlation can be treated as strong evidence for the broad blue-shifted [OIII] components as better indicators of outflows related to central engine in AGN. Furthermore, rather than central BH masses, Eddington ratios and continuum luminosities have key roles on properties of the broad blue-shifted [OIII] components in quasars.
Many active galactic nuclei (AGN) and particularly narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, usually exhibit blueshifts and blue wings in several emission lines, which are mainly associated with outflows and strong winds. In order to study the radial velocity difference between the narrow component of H$β$ and the core component of [OIII]$λ$5007 and the asymmetric emission of this forbidden line, we investigate a sample of NLS1 galaxies . One of the aims of this paper is to analyze the blue wings of the [OIII]$λ$5007 profiles and their relation with the central engine. We have obtained and studie…
The spectra of active galactic nuclei usually exhibit wings in some emission lines, such as [OIII]$λλ$5007,4959, with these wings generally being blueshifted and related to strong winds and outflows. The aim of this work was to analyse the [OIII] emission lines in broad line Seyfert 1 (BLS1) galaxies in order to detect the presence of wings, and to study the [OIII] line properties and their possible connection with the central engine. In addition, we attempted to compare the black hole mass distribution in both BLS1 galaxies with symmetric and blue-asymmetric [OIII] profiles. For this purpose,…
We characterise ionised gas outflows using a large sample of ~330 high-luminosity (45.5 < log(L_bol/erg s^-1) < 49.0), high-redshift (1.5 < z < 4.0) quasars via their [OIII]4960,5008 emission. The median velocity width of the [OIII] emission line is 1540 kms^-1, increasing with increasing quasar luminosity. Broad, blue-shifted wings are seen in the [OIII] profiles of 42 per cent of the sample. Rest-frame ultraviolet spectra with well-characterised CIV 1550 emission line properties are available for more than 210 quasars, allowing an investigation of the relationship between the Broad Line Regi…
Green Pea and Blueberry galaxies are well-known for their compact size, low mass, strong emission lines and analogs to high-z Lyα emitting galaxies. In this study, 1547 strong [OIII]λ5007 emission line compact galaxies with 1694 spectra are selected from LAMOST DR9 at the redshift range from 0.0 to 0.59. According to the redshift distribution, these samples can be separated into three groups: Blueberries, Green Peas and Purple Grapes. Optical [MgII]λ2800 line feature, BPT diagram, multi-wavelength SED fitting, MIR color, and MIR variability are deployed to identify 23 AGN candidates from these…
We use homogeneous samples of radio-quiet Seyfert 1 galaxies and QSOs selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to investigate the connection between the velocity shift and the equivalent width (EW) of the [OIII] 5007 emission line, and their correlations with physical parameters of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We find a significant and negative correlation between the EW of the core component, EW(core), and the blueshift of either the core (the peak), the wing, or the total profile of [OIII] emission; it is fairly strong for the blueshift of the total profile particularly. However, both qu…
[Oiii]λλ4959,5007 "blue outliers" -- that are suggestive of outflows in the narrow line region of quasars -- appear to be much more common at intermediate z (high luminosity) than at low z. About 40% of quasars in a Hamburg ESO intermediate-z sample of 52 sources qualify as blue outliers (i.e., quasars with [OIII] λλ4959,5007 lines showing large systematic blueshifts with respect to rest frame). We discuss major findings on what has become an intriguing field in active galactic nuclei research and stress the relevance of blue outliers to feedback and host galaxy evolution.
The most luminous quasars (with bolometric luminosities are 1E47 erg/s) show a high prevalence of CIV λ1549 and [OIII]λλ4959,5007 emission line profiles with strong blueshifts. Blueshifts are interpreted as due to Doppler effect and selective obscuration, and indicate outflows occurring over a wide range of spatial scales. We found evidence in favor of the nuclear origin of the outflows diagnosed by [OIII]λλ 4959,5007. The ionized gas mass, kinetic power, and mechanical thrust are extremely high, and suggest widespread feedback effects on the host galaxies of very luminous quasars, at cosmic e…
Reionisation-era galaxies often display intense nebular emission lines, both in rest-frame optical ([OIII]+H$β$) and ultraviolet (UV; CIII], CIV). How such strong nebular emission is powered remains unclear, with both active galactic nuclei (AGN) and hot stars considered equally viable. The UV continuum slopes of these early systems tend to be very blue ($β<-2$), reflecting minimal dust obscuration, young ages, and low metallicities. This contrasts with narrow-lined AGN at $z\sim2-3$, whose UV slopes are significantly redder ($β>-1$) than typical star-forming systems in the reionisation era. T…
We study the rest-frame optical properties of 74 luminous (L_bol=10^46.2-48.2 erg/s), 1.5<z<3.5 broad-line quasars with near-IR (JHK) slit spectroscopy. Systemic redshifts based on the peak of the [OIII]5007 line reveal that redshift estimates from the rest-frame UV broad emission lines (mostly MgII) are intrinsically uncertain by ~ 200 km/s (measurement errors accounted for). The overall full-width-at-half-maximum of the narrow [OIII] line is ~ 1000 km/s on average. A significant fraction of the total [OIII] flux (~ 40%) is in a blueshifted wing component with a median velocity offset of ~ 70…
Partially obscured AGNs within a redshift range $z=0.011\sim0.256$ are used to re-study the role of feedback in the AGN-host coevolution issue in terms of their [OIII]$λ$5007 emission line profile. The spectra of these objects enable us to determine the AGN's accretion properties directly from their broad H$α$ emission. This is essential for getting rid of the "circular reasoning" in our previous study of narrow emission-line galaxies, in which the [OIII] emission line was used not only as a proxy of AGN's bolometric luminosity, but also as a diagnostic of outflow. In addition, the measurement…
We investigate Extremely Red Quasars (ERQs), a remarkable population of heavily-reddened quasars at redshift z$\sim$2 - 3 that might be caught during a short-lived 'blow-out' phase of quasar/galaxy evolution. We perform a near-IR observational campaign using Keck/NIRSPEC, VLT/X-shooter and Gemini/GNIRS to measure rest-frame optical spectra of 28 ERQs with median infrared luminosity $\langle$log L(erg/s)$\rangle$ $\sim$46.2. They exhibit the broadest and most blue-shifted [OIII] $λ$4959,5007 emission lines ever reported, with widths (w90) ranging between 2053 and 7227 km/s, and maximum outflow …
We present the analysis of the spin vector orientation of 5$\,$987 SDSS galaxies having negative redshift from $-$87.6 to $-$0.3 km$\,$s$^{-1}$. Two dimensional observed parameters are used to compute three dimensional galaxy rotation axes by applying `position angle--inclination' method. We aim to examine the non-random effects in the spatial orientation of blue-shifted galaxies. We generate 5$\times$10$^6$ virtual galaxies to find expected isotropic distributions by performing numerical simulations. We have written MATLAB program to facilitate the simulation process and eliminate the manual …
We report the discovery of a double-peaked Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) emitter (LAE) at $z=3.2177\pm0.0001$ in VLT/MUSE data. The galaxy is strongly lensed by the galaxy cluster RXC~J0018.5+1626 recently observed in the RELICS survey, and the double-peaked Ly$α$ emission is clearly detected in the two counter images in the MUSE field-of-view. We measure a relatively high Ly$α$ rest-frame equivalent width (EW) of $\mathrm{EW}_{\mathrm{Ly}α,0}=(63\pm2)\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$. Additional near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy allows us to measure the H$β$, [OIII]$\lambda4959\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$ and [OIII]$\…
X-shooter and ISIS WHT spectra of the starforming galaxy PHL 293B also known as A2228-00 and SDSS J223036.79-000636.9 are presented in this paper. We find broad (FWHM = 1000km/s) and very broad (FWZI = 4000km/s) components in the Balmer lines, narrow absorption components in the Balmer series blueshifted by 800km/s, previously undetected FeII multiplet (42) absorptions also blueshifted by 800km/s, IR CaII triplet stellar absorptions consistent with [Fe/H] < -2.0 and no broad components or blushifted absorptions in the HeI lines. Based on historical records, we found no optical variability at t…
We present the results of integral field spectroscopy of the gravitational wave (GW) recoiling black hole candidate 3C 186. The goal of the observations is to study the kinematics of the [OIII]5007 narrow emission line region (NLR) of the quasar, and investigate the origin of the velocity offsets originally measured for different UV lines. The results show that i) the spatial structure of the NLR is complex. The [OIII]5007 line shows significant velocity offsets with respect to the systemic redshift of the source. Different components at different velocities (-670, -100, + 75 km s^-1) are prod…
Using deep multi-wavelength photometry of galaxies from ZFOURGE, we group galaxies at $2.5<z<4.0$ by the shape of their spectral energy distributions (SEDs). We identify a population of galaxies with excess emission in the $K_s$-band, which corresponds to [OIII]+H$β$ emission at $2.95<z<3.65$. This population includes 78% of the bluest galaxies with UV slopes steeper than $β= -2$. We de-redshift and scale this photometry to build two composite SEDs, enabling us to measure equivalent widths of these Extreme [OIII]+H$β$ Emission Line Galaxies (EELGs) at $z\sim3.5$. We identify 60 galaxies that c…
We have found a sample of extreme emission-line galaxies (EELGs) with strong [OIII]$λ$5007 emission at z $\sim$ 0.5. Using broadband photometric selection and requiring small uncertainties in photometry, we searched the 14th Data Release (DR14) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and found 2658 candidates with strong i-band excess (i - z $\leqslant$ r - i - 0.7). We further obtained 649 SDSS spectra of these objects, and visually identified 22 [OIII] emitters lying at 0.40 $<$ z $<$ 0.63. Having constructed their UV-IR spectral energy distributions (SED) we found that they have fairly blue …
Black hole feedback is now a standard component of galaxy formation models. These models predict that the impact of black hole activity on its host galaxy likely peaked at z=2-3, the epoch of strongest star formation activity and black hole accretion activity in the Universe. We used XShooter on the Very Large Telescope to measure rest-frame optical spectra of four z~2.5 extremely red quasars with infrared luminosities ~10^47 erg/sec. We present the discovery of very broad (full width at half max= 2600-5000 km/sec), strongly blue-shifted (by up to 1500 km/sec) [OIII]5007A emission lines in the…
We present an analysis of the orientation effects in SDSS quasar composite spectra. In a previous work we have shown that the equivalent width EW of the [OIII] λ5008Å line is a reliable indicator of the inclination of the accretion disk. Here, we have selected a sample of ~15,000 quasars from the SDSS 7th Data Release and divided it in sub-samples with different values of EW([OIII]). We find inclination effects both on broad and narrow quasars emission lines, among which an increasing broadening from low to high EW for the broad lines and a decreasing importance of the blue component for the n…
With the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA), we report detections of the far-infrared (FIR) [OIII] 88 $μ$m line and the underlying dust continuum in the two quasars in the reionization epoch, J205406.48-000514.8 (hereafter J2054-0005) at $z=6.0391\pm0.0002$ and J231038.88+185519.7 (hereafter J2310+1855) at $z=6.0035\pm0.0007$. The [OIII] luminosity of J2054-0005 and J2310+1855 are $L_{\rm [OIII]} = (6.8\pm0.6) \times 10^{9}$ and $(2.4\pm0.6) \times 10^{9}$ $L_{\rm \odot}$, corresponding to $\approx$ 0.05\%\ and 0.01\%\ of the total infrared luminosity, $L_{\rm TIR}$, respecti…
We analyze a complete spectroscopic sample of galaxies ($\sim$600,000 ) drawn from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS, DR7) to look for evidence of galactic winds in the local Universe. We focus on the shape of the [OIII]$λ$5007 emission line as a tracer of ionizing gas outflows. We stack our spectra in a fine grid of star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass to analyze the dependence of winds on the position of galaxies in the SFR versus mass diagram. We do not find any significant evidence of broad and shifted [OIII]$λ$5007 emission line which we interpret as no evidence of outflowing ionized g…
We have used the capabilities of ALMA to probe the ionized gas towards the Galactic center with the H30alpha mm hydrogen recombination line within 30'' of the Galaxy's dynamical center. The observations are made with spatial and spectral resolutions of 0.46'' X 0.35'' and 3 km/s, respectively. Multiple compact and extended sources are detected in the mini-cavity region with extreme negative radial velocities ranging from -480 to -300 km/s, 2-3'' (0.08-0.12 pc) from Sgr A*. This is the highest radial velocity of ionized gas detected beyond the inner 1'' of Sgr A*. This new component is kinemati…
Using a high luminosity ($L_{\rm bol} \sim 10^{47.5} - 10^{48.3}$ erg s$^{-1}$), high redshift ($3.2 < z < 3.8$) quasar sample of 19 quasars with optical and near-infrared spectroscopy, we investigate the reliability of the CIV-based black hole mass estimates ($M_{\rm BH}$). The median logarithm of the CIV- and H$β$-based $M_{\rm BH}$ ratios is 0.110 dex with the scatter of 0.647 dex. The CIV-to-H$β$ BH mass differences are significantly correlated with the CIV FWHMs, blueshifts and asymmetries. Corrections of the CIV FWHM using the blueshift and asymmetry reduce the scatter of the mass differ…
A new but rare sample of spatially extended emission line nebulae, nicknamed "Green Beans", was discovered at z~0.3 thanks to strong [OIII] emission, and subsequently shown to be local cousins of the Lyman-alpha (Lya) nebulae found at high redshift. Here we use follow-up APO/DIS spectroscopy to better understand how these low redshift Lya nebulae compare to other populations of strong emission line sources. Our spectroscopic data show that low-z Lya nebulae have AGN-like emission line ratios, relatively narrow line widths (FWHM<1000 km s^{-1}), and emission line kinematics resembling those of …
For the sample from Ge et al. of 87 low-$z$ Palomar--Green (PG) quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) and 130 high-$z$ QSOs ($0<z<5$) with $\hb$-based single-epoch supermassive black hole (SMBH) masses, we performed a uniform decomposition of the \civ\ $λ$1549 broad-line profile. Based on the rest frame defined by the \oiii $λ$5007 narrow emission line, a medium-strong positive correlation is found between the \civ\ blueshift and the luminosity at 5100Å or the Eddington ratio \leddR. A medium-strong negative relationship is found between the \civ\ blueshift and \civ\ equivalent width. These results sup…
We quantify the distribution of [OIII]+H$β$ line strengths at z$\simeq$7 using a sample of 20 bright (M$_{\mathrm{UV}}$ $\lesssim$ $-$21) galaxies. We select these systems over wide-area fields (2.3 deg$^2$ total) using a new colour-selection which precisely selects galaxies at z$\simeq$6.63$-$6.83, a redshift range where blue Spitzer/IRAC [3.6]$-$[4.5] colours unambiguously indicate strong [OIII]$+$H$β$ emission. These 20 galaxies suggest a log-normal [OIII]$+$H$β$ EW distribution with median EW = 759$^{+112}_{-113}$ $\mathrm{\mathring{A}}$ and standard deviation = 0.26$^{+0.06}_{-0.05}$ dex.…
The possibility that star-forming galaxies may leak ionizing photons is at the heart of many present-day studies that investigate the reionization of the Universe. We test this hypothesis on local blue compact dwarf galaxies of very high excitation. We assembled a sample of such galaxies by examining the spectra from Data Releases 7 and 10 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We argue that reliable conclusions cannot be based on strong lines alone, and adopt a strategy that includes important weak lines such as [OI] and the high-excitation HeII and [ArIV] lines. Our analysis is based on purely obs…
Core-extremely red quasars (core-ERQ) have been proposed to represent an intermediate evolutionary phase in which a heavily obscured quasar is blowing out the circumnuclear interstellar medium with very energetic outflows prior to becoming an optical quasar. We revise the general UV and optical emission line properties of core-ERQ in the context of the AGN orientation-based unification scenario. We use diagnostic diagrams based on ultraviolet (UV) emission line ratios and UV-optical line kinematic information to compare the physical and kinematic gas properties of core-ERQ with those of other …
We present VLT/X-Shooter and MUSE spectroscopy of an faint F814W=28.60+/-0.33 (Muv=-17.0), low mass (~<10^7 Msun) and compact (Reff=62pc) freshly star-forming galaxy at z=3.1169 magnified (16x) by the Hubble Frontier Fields galaxy cluster Abell S1063. Gravitational lensing allows for a significant jump toward low-luminosity regimes, in moderately high resolution spectroscopy (R=lambda/dlambda ~ 3000-7400). We measured CIV1548,1550, HeII1640, OIII]1661,1666, CIII]1907,1909, Hbeta, [OIII]4959,5007, emission lines with FWHM< 50 km/s and (de-lensed) fluxes spanning the interval 1.0x10^-19 - 2.0x10…
We investigate electron temperature (Te) and gas-phase oxygen abundance (Z_Te) measurements for galaxies in the local Universe (z < 0.25). Our sample comprises spectra from a total of 264 emission-line systems, ranging from individual HII regions to whole galaxies, including 23 composite HII regions from "star-forming main sequence" galaxies in the MaNGA survey. We utilise 130 of these systems with directly measurable Te(OII) to calibrate a new metallicity-dependent Te(OIII) - Te(OII) relation that provides a better representation of our varied dataset than existing relations from the literatu…
We present a detailed study of ionized outflows in a large sample of ~650 hard X-ray detected AGN. Using optical spectroscopy from the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) we are able to reveal the faint wings of the [OIII] emission lines associated with outflows covering, for the first time, an unexplored range of low AGN bolometric luminosity at low redshift (z~0.05). We test if and how the incidence and velocity of ionized outflow is related to AGN physical parameters: black hole mass, gas column density, Eddington Ratio, [OIII], X-ray, and bolometric luminosities. We find a higher occurrenc…
Major gas-rich mergers of galaxies are expected to play an important role in triggering and fuelling luminous AGN. We present deep multi-band (u/r/z) imaging and long slit spectroscopy of four double-peaked [OIII] emitting AGN, a class of objects associated with either kcp-separated binary AGN or final stage major mergers, though AGN with complex narrow-line regions are known contaminants. Such objects are of interest since they represent the onset of AGN activity during the merger process. Three of the objects studied have been confirmed as major mergers using near-infrared imaging, one is a …
We have studied the physical properties of a sample of narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, and present a summary of our previous results, and new results. In particular, we have previously shown that (1) the locus of NLS1 galaxies on the M_BH-sigma_[OIII] plane does follow the relation of non-active galaxies after removing objects obviously dominated by outflows as evidenced by their [OIII] core blueshifts. We have (2) identified a number of so-called 'blue outliers' with large outflow velocities revealed by their emission-line kinematic shifts. We also (3) present new correlations and tren…
Comprehensive JWST+ALMA Study on the Extended Ly$α$ Emitters, Himiko and CR7 at $z\sim 7$: Blue Major Merger Systems in Stark Contrast to Submillimeter Galaxies
We present results on the excitation properties of z~2.3 galaxies using early observations from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) Survey. With its coverage of the full suite of strong rest-frame optical emission lines, MOSDEF provides an unprecedented view of the rest-frame optical spectra of a representative sample of distant star-forming galaxies. We investigate the locations of z~2.3 MOSDEF galaxies in multiple emission-line diagnostic diagrams. These include the [OIII]/Hb vs. [NII]/Ha and [OIII]/Hb vs. [SII]/Ha "BPT" diagrams, as well as the O_32 vs. R_23 excitation diagram. We rec…
We use extensive spectroscopy from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey to investigate the relationships between rest-frame optical emission line equivalent widths ($W$) and a number of galaxy and ISM characteristics for a sample of $1134$ star-forming galaxies at redshifts $1.4\lesssim z\lesssim 3.8$. We examine how the equivalent widths of [OII]$λλ3727, 3730$, H$β$, [OIII]$λλ4960, 5008$, [OIII]$+$H$β$, H$α$, and H$α$+[NII]$λλ6550, 6585$, depend on stellar mass, UV slope, age, star-formation rate (SFR) and specific SFR (sSFR), ionization parameter and excitation conditions (O32 an…
TMC-1A is a protostellar source harboring a young protostar, IRAS 04365+2353, and shows a highly asymmetric features of a few 100 au scale in the molecular emission lines. Blue-shifted emission is much stronger in the CS ($J=5$-4) line than red-shifted one. The asymmetry can be explained if the gas accretion is episodic and takes the form of cloudlet capture, given the cloudlet approached toward us. The gravity of the protostar transforms the cloudlet into a stream and changes its velocity along the flow. The emission from the cloudlet should be blue-shifted before the periastron, while it sho…
We present a sample of 22 blue ($(B-V)_{AB}<0.45$), luminous ($M_{B,AB}<-18.9$), metal-poor galaxies in the $0.69<z<0.88$ redshift range, selected from the DEEP2 galaxy redshift survey. Their spectra contain the $[OIII]\lambda4363$ auroral line, the $[OII]λ\lambda3726,3729$ doublet and the strong nebular $[OIII]λλ4959,5007$ emission lines. The ionised gas-phase oxygen abundances of these galaxies lie between $7.62<12+\log O/H < 8.19$, i.e. between $1/10 Z_{\odot}$ and $1/3 Z_{\odot}$. We find that galaxies in our sample have comparable metallicities to other intermediate-redshift samples, but …
The most highly accreting quasars (xA) are of special interest in studies of the physics of AGNs and host galaxy evolution. Quasars accreting at high rates (L/LEdd $\sim$ 1) hold promise for use as 'standard candles': distance indicators detectable at very high redshift. However, their observational properties are largely unknown. A large sample of xA can clarify the main properties of quasars radiating near L/LEdd $\sim$ 1 in the Hb spectral range for redshift $\lt$ 0.8. We use selection criteria derived from 4DE1 studies to identify and analyze spectra for a sample of 334 candidate sources i…
We have undertaken a multi-band observing program aimed at obtaining a complete census of winds in a sample of WISE/SDSS selected hyper-luminous (WISSH) QSOs at z~2-4. We have analyzed the rest-frame optical (LBT/LUCI and VLT/SINFONI) and UV (SDSS) spectra of 18 randomly selected WISSH QSOs to measure the SMBH mass and study the properties of winds both in the NLR and BLR traced by blueshifted/skewed [OIII] and CIV emission lines, respectively. These WISSH QSOs are powered by SMBH with masses $\ge$10$^9$ Msun accreting at 0.4<$λ_{Edd}$<3.1. We have found the existence of two sub-populations ch…
We conduct kinematic analysis of the SDSS spectra of 568 obscured luminous quasars, with the emphasis on the kinematic structure of the [OIII]5007 emission line. [OIII] emission tends to show blueshifts and blue excess, which indicates that at least part of the narrow-line gas is undergoing an organized outflow. The velocity width containing 90% of line power ranges from 370 to 4780 km/sec, suggesting outflow velocities up to 2000 km/sec. The velocity width of the [OIII] emission is positively correlated with the radio luminosity among the radio-quiet quasars. We propose that radio emission in…
We present Br$γ$ emission line kinematics of the nuclear region of NGC 253, recently known to host a strong galactic wind that limits the global star formation of the galaxy. We obtained high-resolution long-slit spectroscopic data with PHOENIX at Gemini-South, positioning the slit on the nucleus Infrared Core (IRC), close to the nuclear disk major axis. The spatial resolution was 0.35"($\sim$6 pc) and the slit length 14"($\sim$240 pc). The spectral resolution was $\sim$74000, unprecedented high for galactic nuclei observations at $\sim$2.1$μ$m. The line profiles appear highly complex, with bl…
We present UV to NIR spectroscopic observations of the quasar J0015+1842 and its proximate molecular absorber at z=2.631. The [OIII] emission line of the quasar is composed of a broad (FWHM~1600 km/s), spatially-unresolved component, blueshifted by ~600 km/s from a narrow, spatially-resolved component (FWHM~650 km/s). The wide, blueshifted, unresolved component is consistent with the presence of outflowing gas in the nuclear region. The narrow component can be further decomposed into a blue and a red blob with velocity width of several hundred km/s each, seen ~5 pkpc on opposite spatial locati…
We perform a systematic study of outflow in the narrow-line region (NLR) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at $z\sim0.4-0.8$ basing upon a large sample of $\sim900$ quasars at $z\sim 0.4-0.8$. The sample is extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey by mainly requiring 1) the g-band magnitude is brighter than 19 magnitude; and 2) the [OIII]$\lambda5007$ emission line has a signal-to-noise ration larger than 30. Profiles of multiple emission lines are modeled by a sum of several Gaussian functions. The spectral analysis allows us to identify 1) a prevalence of both [OIII]$\lambda5007$ line blue…
We present Monte Carlo line transfer models that investigate the effects of dust on the very late time emission line spectra of the core collapse supernovae SN 1980K and SN 1993J and the young core collapse supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. Their blue-shifted emission peaks, resulting from the removal by dust of redshifted photons emitted from the far sides of the remnants, and the presence of extended red emission wings are used to constrain dust compositions and radii and to determine the masses of dust in the remnants. We estimate dust masses of between 0.08 - 0.15 M$_\odot$ for SN 1993J at y…
We present an observational study of 22 broad absorption line quasars (BAL QSOs) at $3\lesssim z \lesssim5$ based on optical/near-IR spectroscopy, aiming to investigate quasar winds and their effects. The near-IR spectroscopy covers the \hb\ and/or \mgii\ broad emission lines (BELs) for these quasars, allowing us to estimate their central black hole (BH) masses in a robust way. We found that our BAL QSOs on average do not have a higher Eddington ratio than that from non-BAL QSOs matched in redshift and/or luminosity. In a subset consisting of seven strong BAL QSOs possessing sub-relativistic B…
The z = 6.6 Lyman-$α$ emitter 'CR7' has been claimed to have a Population III-like stellar population, or alternatively, be a candidate Direct Collapse Black Hole (DCBH). In this paper we investigate the evidence for these exotic scenarios using recently available, deeper, optical, near-infrared and mid-infrared imaging. We find strong Spitzer/IRAC detections for the main component of CR7 at 3.6 and 4.5 microns, and show that it has a blue colour ([3.6] - [4.5] $= -1.2\pm 0.3$). This colour cannot be reproduced by current Pop. III or pristine DCBH models. Instead, the results suggest that the …
Luminous type-2 quasars in which the glow from the central black hole is obscured by dust are ideal targets for studying their host galaxies and the quasars' effect on galaxy evolution. Such feedback appears ubiquitous in luminous obscured quasars where high velocity ionized nebulae have been found. We present rest-frame yellow-band (~5000 Angstroms) observations using the Hubble Space Telescope for a sample of 20 luminous quasar host galaxies at 0.2 < z < 0.6 selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For the first time, we combine host galaxy observations with geometric measurements of quas…
