Using a high luminosity ($L_{\rm bol} \sim 10^{47.5} - 10^{48.3}$ erg s$^{-1}$), high redshift ($3.2 < z < 3.8$) quasar sample of 19 quasars with optical and near-infrared spectroscopy, we investigate the reliability of the CIV-based black hole mass estimates ($M_{\rm BH}$). The median logarithm of the CIV- and H$β$-based $M_{\rm BH}$ ratios is 0.110 dex with the scatter of 0.647 dex. The CIV-to-H$β$ BH mass differences are significantly correlated with the CIV FWHMs, blueshifts and asymmetries. Corrections of the CIV FWHM using the blueshift and asymmetry reduce the scatter of the mass differences by $\sim$ 0.04-0.2 dex. Quasars in our sample accrete at the Eddington ratio $R_{\rm EDD}>0.3$ and cover a considerable range of blueshifts, with 18/19 of the quasars showing CIV blueshifts (with the median value of 1126 km s$^{-1}$) and 14/19 of the quasars showing CIV blueshifts larger than 500 km s$^{-1}$. It suggests that not all quasars with high Eddington ratios show large blueshifts. The Baldwin effect between the CIV rest-frame equivalent width (REW) and the continuum luminosity at 1350 $\overset{\lower.5em\circ}{\mathrm{A}}$ is not seen, likely due to the limited luminosity range of our sample. We find a lack of flux in the red wing of the composite spectrum with larger CIV blueshift, and detect a higher ratio of [OIII] quasars with REW$_{\rm [OIII]}>5$ $\overset{\lower.5em\circ}{\mathrm{A}}$ in the subsample with lower CIV blueshift. It is more likely that they are caused by the combination of the Eddington ratio and the orientation effect.
Extremely red quasars (ERQs) are an interesting sample of quasars in the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Sample (BOSS) in the redshift range of $2.0 - 3.4$ and have extreme red colours of $i-W3\ge4.6$. Core ERQs have strong CIV emission lines with rest equivalent width of $\ge100$Å. Many core ERQs also have CIV line profiles with peculiar boxy shapes which distinguish them from normal blue quasars. We show, using a combination of kernel density estimation and local outlier factor analyses on a space of the $i-W3$ colour, CIV rest equivalent width and line kurtosis, that core ERQs likely repre…
Black-hole masses are crucial to understanding the physics of the connection between quasars and their host galaxies and measuring cosmic black hole-growth. At high redshift, z > 2.1, black hole masses are normally derived using the velocity-width of the CIV broad emission line, based on the assumption that the observed velocity-widths arise from virial-induced motions. In many quasars, the CIV-emission line exhibits significant blue asymmetries (`blueshifts') with the line centroid displaced by up to thousands of km/s to the blue. These blueshifts almost certainly signal the presence of stron…
In this paper, we extend our works of Papers I and II, which are assigned to systematically survey \CIVab\ narrow absorption lines (NALs) with \zabs$\ll$\zem\ on quasar spectra of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), to collect \CIV\ NALs with \zabs$\approx$\zem\ from blue to red wings of \CIVwave\ emission lines. Together with Papers I and II, we have collected a total number of 41,479 \CIV\ NALs with $1.4544\le$\zabs$\le4.9224$ in surveyed spectral region redward of \lya\ until red wing of \CIVwave\ emission line. We find that the stronger \CIV\ NALs tend to be the more satura…
While quasar outflows may be quasi-ubiquitous, there are significant differences on a source-by- source basis. These differences can be organized along the 4D Eigenvector 1 sequence: at least at low z, with only Population A sources radiating at relatively high Eddington ratio and showing prominent high-velocity outflows in Civ λ1549 line profiles. We discuss in this paper VLT-FORS observations of Civ λ1549 emission line profiles for a high-luminosity sample of Hamburg- ESO quasars and how they are affected by outflow motion as a function of quasar luminosity. Our high- luminosity sample has t…
We characterise ionised gas outflows using a large sample of ~330 high-luminosity (45.5 < log(L_bol/erg s^-1) < 49.0), high-redshift (1.5 < z < 4.0) quasars via their [OIII]4960,5008 emission. The median velocity width of the [OIII] emission line is 1540 kms^-1, increasing with increasing quasar luminosity. Broad, blue-shifted wings are seen in the [OIII] profiles of 42 per cent of the sample. Rest-frame ultraviolet spectra with well-characterised CIV 1550 emission line properties are available for more than 210 quasars, allowing an investigation of the relationship between the Broad Line Regi…
We report a synchronized kinematic shift of CIV and SiIV broad absorption lines (BAL) in a high-ionization, radio-loud, and X-ray bright quasar SDSS-J092345+512710 (at $z_{em} \sim 2.1627$). This quasar shows two broad absorption components (blue component at $v \sim 14,000\ km\ s^{-1}$, and red component at $v \sim 4,000\ km\ s^{-1}$ with respect to the quasars systemic redshift). The absorption profiles of CIV and SiIV BAL of the blue component show decrease in outflow velocity with an average deceleration rate of $-1.62_{-0.05}^{+0.04}\ cm\ s^{-2}$ and $-1.14^{+0.21}_{-0.22}\ cm\ s^{-2}$ ov…
Broad emission lines in quasars enable us to "resolve" structure and kinematics of the broad line emitting region (BLR) thought to in- volve an accretion disk feeding a supermassive black hole. Interpretation of broad line measures within the 4DE1 formalism simplifies the apparent confusion among such data by contrasting and unifying properties of so-called high and low accreting Population A and B sources. Hβ serves as an estimator of black hole mass, Eddington ratio and source rest frame, the latter a valuable input for Civλ1549 studies which allow us to isolate the blueshifted wind componen…
The most luminous quasars (with bolometric luminosities are 1E47 erg/s) show a high prevalence of CIV λ1549 and [OIII]λλ4959,5007 emission line profiles with strong blueshifts. Blueshifts are interpreted as due to Doppler effect and selective obscuration, and indicate outflows occurring over a wide range of spatial scales. We found evidence in favor of the nuclear origin of the outflows diagnosed by [OIII]λλ 4959,5007. The ionized gas mass, kinetic power, and mechanical thrust are extremely high, and suggest widespread feedback effects on the host galaxies of very luminous quasars, at cosmic e…
We use multi-epoch quasar spectroscopy to determine how accurately single-epoch spectroscopy can locate quasars in emission-line parameter space in order to inform investigations where time-resolved spectroscopy is not available. We explore the improvements in emission-line characterization that result from using non-parametric information from many lines as opposed to a small number of parameters for a single line, utilizing reconstructions based on an independent component analysis applied to the data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping project. We find that most of the q…
Using a sample of 30,000 quasars from SDSS-DR7, we explore the range of properties exhibited by high-ionization, broad emission lines, such as CIV 1549. Specifically we investigate the anti-correlation between L_UV and emission line EQW (the Baldwin Effect) and the "blueshifting" of high-ionization emission lines. The blueshift of the CIV emission line is nearly ubiquitous, with a mean shift of 810 km/s for radio-quiet (RQ) quasars and 360 km/s for radio-loud (RL) quasars, and the Baldwin Effect is present in both RQ and RL samples. Composite spectra are constructed as a function of CIV emissi…
So far the masses of about 50 active galactic nuclei have been measured through the reverberation mapping technique (RM). Most measurements have been performed for objects of moderate luminosity and redshift, based on H$β$, which is also used to calibrate the scaling relation which allows single-epoch (SE) mass determination based on AGN luminosity and the width of different emission lines. The SE mass obtained from CIV$(1549 {\rmÅ})$ line shows a large spread around mean values, due to complex structure and gas dynamics of the relevant emission region. Direct RM measures of CIV exist for only…
We present reverberation-mapping lags and black-hole mass measurements using the CIV 1549 broad emission line from a sample of 349 quasars monitored as a part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping Project. Our data span four years of spectroscopic and photometric monitoring for a total baseline of 1300 days. We report significant time delays between the continuum and the CIV 1549 emission line in 52 quasars, with an estimated false-positive detection rate of 10%. Our analysis of marginal lag measurements indicates that there are on the order of 100 additional lags that should b…
We systematically investigate short-timescale ($<$10-day rest-frame) CIV broad absorption-line (BAL) variability to constrain quasar-wind properties and provide insights into BAL-variability mechanisms in quasars. We employ data taken by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping (SDSS-RM) project, as the rapid cadence of these observations provides a novel opportunity to probe BAL variability on shorter rest-frame timescales than have previously been explored. In a sample of 27 quasars with a median of 58 spectral epochs per quasar, we have identified 15 quasars ($55^{+18}_{-14}$%), 1…
We present an investigation of the low-frequency radio and ultraviolet properties of a sample of $\simeq$10,500 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 14, observed as part of the first data release of the Low-Frequency-Array Two-metre Sky Survey. The quasars have redshifts $1.5 < z < 3.5$ and luminosities $44.6 < \log(L_{\text{bol}}/\text{erg s}^{-1}) < 47.2$. We employ ultraviolet spectral reconstructions based on an independent component analysis to parametrize the CIV$λ$1549-emission line that is used to infer the strength of accretion disc winds, and the HeII$λ$1640 line, a…
We use the multi-epoch spectra of 362 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping project to investigate the dependence of the blueshift of CIV relative to MgII on quasar properties. We confirm that high-blueshift sources tend to have low CIV equivalent widths (EWs), and that the low-EW sources span a range of blueshift. Other high-ionization lines, such as HeII, also show similar blueshift properties. The ratio of the line width (measured as both the full-width at half maximum and the velocity dispersion) of CIV to that of MgII increases with blueshift. Quasar variability …
We present CIV BLR modeling results for the multiply imaged $z=2.805$ quasar SDSS J2222+2745. Using data covering a 5.3 year baseline after accounting for gravitational time delays, we find models that can reproduce the observed emission-line spectra and integrated CIV fluctuations. The models suggest a thick disk BLR that is inclined by $\sim$40 degrees to the observer's line of sight and with a emissivity weighted median radius of $r_{\rm median} = 33.0^{+2.4}_{-2.1}$ light days. The kinematics are dominated by near-circular Keplerian motion with the remainder inflowing. The rest-frame lag o…
We present near-infrared 1.1-1.3 and 1.3-1.6 $μ$m spectra of the Ly$α$-luminous quasar PSO J006.1240+39.2219 at $z=6.617$ obtained with the NIRSPEC spectrograph at the Keck-II telescope. The spectra cover the CIV $λ$1549, CIII] $λ$1909 emission lines and part of the UV continuum of the quasar. From the NIRSPEC observations of PSO J006.1240+39.2219, we constrain the spectral slope of its UV continuum to be $α_λ=-1.35\pm0.26$ and measure an absolute magnitude of $M_{1450}=-25.60$. Using the scaling relation between black hole mass, width of the CIV line and ultraviolet continuum luminosity, we d…
Red quasars are candidate young objects in an early transition stage of massive galaxy evolution. Our team recently discovered a population of extremely red quasars (ERQs) in the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) that has a suite of peculiar emission-line properties including large rest equivalent widths (REWs), unusual "wingless" line profiles, large NV/Lya, NV/CIV, SiIV/CIV and other flux ratios, and very broad and blueshifted [OIII] 5007. Here we present a new catalog of CIV and NV emission-line data for 216,188 BOSS quasars to characterize the ERQ line properties further. We s…
We present results from the largest systematic investigation of broad absorption line (BAL) acceleration to date. We use spectra of 140 quasars from three Sloan Digital Sky Survey programs to search for global velocity offsets in BALs over timescales of ~2.5-5.5 years in the quasar rest frame. We carefully select acceleration candidates by requiring monolithic velocity shifts over the entire BAL trough, avoiding BALs with velocity shifts that might be caused by profile variability. The CIV BALs of two quasars show velocity shifts consistent with the expected signatures of BAL acceleration, and…
This work provides evidence that a large fraction of \ion{C}{IV} narrow absorption lines (NALs) seen along the line of sight to distant quasars are due to accretion disk winds, while also seeking to understand the relationship between NALs and certain quasar-intrinsic properties. We extend the results from past work in the literature using $\sim105,000$ NALs from a sample of $\sim58,000$ SDSS quasars. The primary results of this work are summarized as follows: (1) the velocity distribution (${\rm d}N/{\rm d}β$) of NALs is not a function of radio loudness (or even detection) once marginalized b…
We investigate the properties of the circumgalactic gas in the halo of quasar host galaxies from CIV absorption line systems. Optical spectroscopy of closely aligned pairs of quasars (projected distance \leq 200 kpc) obtained at the Gran Telescopio Canarias is used to investigate the distribution of the absorbing gas for a sample of 18 quasars at z \sim 2. We found that the detected absorption systems of EW \geq 0.3Ang associated with the foreground QSO are revealed up to 200 kpc from the center of the host galaxy. The structure of the absorbing gas is rather patchy with a covering fraction of…
We survey the incidence and absorption strength of the metal-line transitions CII 1334 and CIV from the circumgalactic medium (CGM) surrounding z~2 quasars, which act as signposts for massive dark matter halos M_halo~10^12.5 Msun. On scales of the virial radius (Mvir~160kpc), we measure a high covering fraction fC=0.73+/-0.10 to strong CII absorption (rest equivalent width W1334>0.2A), implying a massive reservoir of cool (T~10^4K) metal enriched gas. We conservatively estimate a metal mass exceeding 10^8 Msun. We propose these metals trace enrichment of the incipient intragroup/intracluster m…
The CIV broad emission line is visible in optical spectra to redshifts exceeding z~5. CIV has long been known to exhibit significant displacements to the blue and these `blueshifts' almost certainly signal the presence of strong outflows. As a consequence, single-epoch virial black hole (BH) mass estimates derived from CIV velocity-widths are known to be systematically biased compared to masses from the hydrogen Balmer lines. Using a large sample of 230 high-luminosity (log $L_{\rm Bol}$ = 45.5-48 erg/s), redshift 1.5<z<4.0 quasars with both CIV and Balmer line spectra, we have quantified the …
Broad absorption lines (BALs) found in a significant fraction of quasar spectra identify high-velocity outflows that might be present in all quasars and could be a major factor in feedback to galaxy evolution. Understanding the nature of these flows requires further constraints on their physical properties, including their column densities, for which well-studied BALs, such as CIV 1548,1551, typically provide only a lower limit because of saturation effects. Low-abundance lines, such as PV 1118,1128, indicate large column densities, implying outflows more powerful than measurements of CIV alon…
Using a sample of $\simeq$144,000 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 14 we investigate the outflow properties, evident both in absorption and emission, of high-ionization Broad Absorption Line (BAL) and non-BAL quasars with redshifts 1.6 $\lesssim z \leq$ 3.5 and luminosities 45.3 $< \log_{10}(L_{bol}) < $ 48.2 erg s$^{-1}$. Key to the investigation is a continuum and emission-line reconstruction scheme, based on mean-field independent component analysis, that allows the kinematic properties of the CIV$λ$1550 emission line to be compared directly for both non-BAL and BAL qu…
The quasar PDS 456 (at redshift ~0.184) has a prototype ultra-fast outflow (UFO) measured in X-rays. This outflow is highly ionized with relativistic speeds, large total column densities log N_H(cm^-2) > 23, and large kinetic energies that could be important for feedback to the host galaxy. A UV spectrum of PDS 456 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope in 2000 contains one well-measured broad absorption line (BAL) at ~1346A (observed) that might be Ly-alpha at v ~ 0.06c or NV 1240 at v ~ 0.08c. However, we use photoionisation models and comparisons to other outflow quasars to show that thes…
Quasar redshifts require the best possible precision and accuracy for a number of applications, such as setting the velocity scale for outflows as well as measuring small-scale quasar-quasar clustering. The most reliable redshift standard in luminous quasars is arguably the narrow [OIII] $λλ$4959,5007 emission line doublet in the rest-frame optical. We use previously published [OIII] redshifts obtained using near-infrared spectra in a sample of 45 high-redshift (z > 2.2) quasars to evaluate redshift measurement techniques based on rest-frame ultraviolet spectra. At redshifts above z = 2.2 the …
We present a catalog of high-velocity CIV $λ$ 1548,1551 mini-Broad Absorption Lines (mini-BALs) in the archives of the VLT-UVES and Keck-HIRES spectrographs. We identify high-velocity CIV mini-BALs based on smooth rounded BAL-like profiles with velocity blueshifts $<$ $-$4000 km/s and widths in the range 70 $\lesssim$ FWHM(1548) $\lesssim$ 2000 km/s (for $λ$1548 alone). We find 105 mini-BALs in 44 quasars from a total sample of 638 quasars. The fraction of quasars with at least one mini-BAL meeting our criteria is roughly $\sim9$% after correcting for incomplete velocity coverage. However, the…
The inter-line comparison between high- and low-ionization emission lines has yielded a wealth of information on the quasar broad line region (BLR) structure and dynamics, including perhaps the earliest unambiguous evidence in favor of a disk + wind structure in radio-quiet quasars. We carried out an analysis of the CIV 1549 and Hbeta line profiles of 28 Hamburg-ESO high luminosity quasars and of 48 low-z, low luminosity sources in order to test whether the high-ionization line CIV 1549 width could be correlated with Hbeta and be used as a virial broadening estimator. We analyze intermediate- …
[Abridged] Context: The advent of 8-10m class telescopes makes possible for the first time detailed comparison of quasars with similar luminosity and very different redshifts. Aims: A search for z-dependent gradients in line emission diagnostics and derived physical properties by comparing, in a narrow bolometric luminosity range (log L ~ 46.1 +/- 0.4 [\ergss]), some of the most luminous local (z < 0.6) quasars with some of the lowest luminosity sources yet found at redshift z = 2.1 ~ 2.5. Method: Spectra for 22 high z sources were obtained with the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) while t…
We analyse the properties of the CIV broad emission line in connection with the X-ray emission of 30 bright SDSS quasars at z~3.0-3.3 with pointed XMM-Newton observations, which were selected to test the suitability of AGN as cosmological tools. In our previous work, we found that a large fraction (~25%) of the quasars in this sample are X-ray underluminous by factors of >3-10. As absorbing columns of >10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ can be safely ruled out, their weakness is most likely intrinsic. Here we explore possible correlations between the UV and X-ray features of these sources to investigate the …
Line profile distortions are commonly observed in gravitationally lensed quasar spectra. These distortions are caused by microlensing from the stars in the lensing galaxy, which produce differential magnification of spatially and kinematically separated parts of the broad line region (BLR). The quasi-simultaneous visible and near-infrared spectroscopy of the lensed quasar Q2237+0305 reveals strong microlensing-induced line deformations in the high-ionization CIV $λ$ 1549 Åand the low-ionization H$α$ emission lines. We use this effect to constrain the BLR size, geometry, and kinematics in Q2237…
We present X-SHOOTER near-infrared spectroscopy of a large sample of 38 luminous ($M_{1450}=-29.0$ to $-24.4$) quasars at $5.78<z<7.54$, which have complementary CII observations from ALMA. This X-SHOOTER/ALMA sample provides us with the most comprehensive view of reionization-era quasars to date, allowing us to connect the quasar properties with those of its host galaxy. In this work we introduce the sample, discuss data reduction and spectral fitting, and present an analysis of the broad emission line properties. The measured FeII/MgII flux ratio suggests that the broad line regions of all q…
The elemental abundances in the broad-line regions of high-redshift quasars trace the chemical evolution in the nuclear regions of massive galaxies in the early universe. In this work, we study metallicity-sensitive broad emission-line flux ratios in rest-frame UV spectra of 25 high-redshift (5.8 < z < 7.5) quasars observed with the VLT/X-shooter and Gemini/GNIRS instruments, ranging over $\log(M_{\rm{BH}}/M_{\odot})= 8.4-9.8$ in black hole mass and $\log(L_{\rm{bol}}/\rm{erg\, s}^{-1})= 46.7-47.7$ in bolometric luminosity. We fit individual spectra and composites generated by binning across q…
An analysis of ~19500 narrow (<200 km/s) CIV 1548.2,1550.8 absorbers in ~34000 Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar spectra is presented. The statistics of the number of absorbers as a function of outflow-velocity shows that in approximately two-thirds of outflows, with multiple CIV absorbers present, absorbers are line-locked at the 500 km/s velocity separation of the CIV absorber doublet; appearing as 'triplets' in the quasar spectra. Line-locking is an observational signature of radiative line driving in outflowing material, where the successive shielding of 'clouds' of material in the outflow l…
The WISSH quasars project aims at studying the nuclear and host galaxy properties of the most luminous quasars ($L_{bol}>10^{47}$ erg/s, $1.8<z<4.6$). Nuclear winds are manifested as UV broad ($\geq$ 2,000 km/s) absorption lines (BAL) in $\sim$ 15\% of quasars. We aim at studying the incidence and properties of such winds in the WISSH sample, to investigate possible differences with respect to lower luminosity AGN regimes. We collected optical spectra from the SDSS data release 12, and identified those showing absorption troughs in the region between \siiv and \civ emission lines. We find a hi…
We studied the spectra of six $z \sim 2.2$ quasars obtained with the X-shooter spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope. The redshift of these sources and X-shooter's spectral coverage allow us to cover the rest spectral range $\sim1200 - 7000$Å for the simultaneous detection of optical and ultraviolet lines emitted by the Broad Line Region. Simultaneous measurements, avoiding issues related to quasars variability, help us understanding the connection between different Broad Line Region line profiles generally used as virial estimators of Black Holes masses in quasars. The goal of this work is…
We investigate the dependence on data quality of quasar properties measured from the CIV emission line region at high redshifts. Our measurements come from 32 epochs of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Reverberation Mapping Project spectroscopic observations of 482 z>1.46 quasars. We compare the differences between measurements made from the single-epoch and coadded spectra, focusing on the CIV emission line because of its importance for studies of high-redshift quasar demographics and physical properties, including black hole masses. In addition to statistical errors increasing (by factors of …
We present Chandra observations of 2106 radio-quiet quasars in the redshift range 1.7<z<2.7 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), through data release fourteen (DR14), that do not contain broad absorption lines (BAL) in their rest-frame UV spectra. This sample adds over a decade worth of SDSS and Chandra observations to our previously published sample of 139 quasars from SDSS DR5 which is still used to correlate X-ray and optical/UV emission in typical quasars. We fit the SDSS spectra for 753 of the quasars in our sample that have high-quality (exposure time $\gtrapprox$10 ks and off-axis …
We present the first results of a 4.5 year monitoring campaign of the three bright images of multiply imaged $z=2.805$ quasar SDSS J2222+2745 using the Gemini North Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS-N) and the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT). We take advantage of gravitational time delays to construct light curves surpassing 6 years in duration and achieve average spectroscopic cadence of 10 days during the 8 months of visibility per season. Using multiple secondary calibrators and advanced reduction techniques, we achieve percent-level spectrophotometric precision and carry out an unprecedented …
In this Letter, the Evans and Koratkar Atlas of Hubble Space Telescope Faint Object Spectrograph Spectra of Active Galactic Nuclei and Quasars is used to study the redward asymmetry in CIV broad emission lines (BELs). It is concluded that there is a highly significant correlation between the spectral index from 10 GHz to 1350 $Å$ and the amount of excess luminosity in the red wing of the CIV BEL ($>99.9999%$ significance level for the full sample and the radio loud subsample independently, but no correlation is found for the radio quiet subsample). This is interpreted as a correlation between …
A recently-discovered class of outflows, extremely high-velocity outflows (EHVOs), may be key to understanding feedback processes as it is likely the most powerful in terms of mass-energy. These EHVOs have been observed at redshifts 1.052 < z_em < 7.641, but the potential connection with outflows in emission had not been studied. We find that EHVOs, albeit their small numbers at the moment, appear to show distinct CIV and HeII properties. In particular, EHVOs are more predominant in quasars with large blueshifts of the CIV emission line, suggesting a connection between emission and absorption …
We have undertaken a multi-band observing program aimed at obtaining a complete census of winds in a sample of WISE/SDSS selected hyper-luminous (WISSH) QSOs at z~2-4. We have analyzed the rest-frame optical (LBT/LUCI and VLT/SINFONI) and UV (SDSS) spectra of 18 randomly selected WISSH QSOs to measure the SMBH mass and study the properties of winds both in the NLR and BLR traced by blueshifted/skewed [OIII] and CIV emission lines, respectively. These WISSH QSOs are powered by SMBH with masses $\ge$10$^9$ Msun accreting at 0.4<$λ_{Edd}$<3.1. We have found the existence of two sub-populations ch…
Using the MEGAFLOW survey, which consists of a combination of MUSE and UVES observations of 22 quasar fields selected to contain strong MgII absorbers, we measure covering fractions of CIV and MgII as a function of impact parameter $b$ using a novel Bayesian logistic regression method on unbinned data, appropriate for small samples. We also analyse how the CIV and MgII covering fractions evolve with redshift. In the MUSE data, we found 215 $z=1-1.5$ [OII] emitters with fluxes $>10^{-17}$ erg\,s$^{-1}$\,cm$^{-2}$ and within 250 kpc of quasar sight-lines. Over this redshift path $z=1-1.5$, we ha…
We examine the UV and X-ray properties of 256 radio-quiet SDSS quasars (QSOs) observed in X-rays with Chandra and/or XMM-Newton in order to study the relationship between QSOs with broad CIV absorption lines (BALs; width >2000 km/s) and those with CIV mini-BALs (here defined to have widths of 1000--2000 km/s). Our sample includes 42 BAL and 48 mini-BAL QSOs. The relative X-ray brightness and hard spectral slopes of the mini-BAL population are, on average, intermediate between those of BAL and non-BAL QSOs, as might be expected if narrower and broader absorption line outflows are physically rel…
We use MUSE/VLT to conduct a survey of $z\sim3$ physical quasar pairs at close separation with a fast observation strategy. Our aim is twofold: (i) explore the Ly$α$ glow around the faint-end of the quasar population; (ii) take advantage of the combined illumination of a quasar pair to unveil large-scale intergalactic structures extending between the two quasars. Here, we report the results for a quasar pair ($z=3.020,3.008$; $i=21.84,22.15$), separated by 11.6 arcsec (or 89 projected kpc). MUSE reveals filamentary Ly$α$ structures extending between the two quasars with an average surface brig…
We present a detailed analysis of a very unusual sub-damped Lyman alpha (sub-DLA) system at redshift z=2.304 towards the quasar Q0453-423, based on high signal-to-noise (S/N), high-resolution spectral data obtained with VLT/UVES. With a neutral hydrogen column density of log N(HI)=19.23 and a metallicity of -1.61 as indicated by [OI/HI] the sub-DLA mimics the properties of many other optically thick absorbers at this redshift. A very unusual feature of this system is, however, the lack of any CIV absorption at the redshift of the neutral hydrogen absorption, although the relevant spectral regi…
Reverberation mapping (RM) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) has been used over the past three decades to determine AGN broad-line region (BLR) sizes and central black-hole masses, and their relations with the AGN's luminosity. Until recently the sample of objects with RM data was limited to low-luminosity AGNs ($L_{\rm opt} \lesssim 10^{46}$ ergs s$^{-1}$) and low redshifts ($z \lesssim 0.5$). Here we present results from a reverberation-mapping project of some of the most luminous and highest redshift quasars that have been mapped to date. The study is based on almost twenty years of photomet…
We present deep Keck/MOSFIRE near-infrared spectroscopy of a strong Lyman alpha emitting source at z=6.1292, HSC J142331.71-001809.1, which was discovered by the SHELLQS program from imaging data of the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. This source is one of five objects that show unresolved (<230 km s-1) and prominent (>10^44 erg s-1) Lyman alpha emission lines at absolute 1450 angstrom continuum magnitudes of M1450~-22 mag. Its rest-frame Lyman alpha equivalent width (EW) is 370+/-30 angstrom. In the 2 hour Keck/MOSFIRE spectrum in Y band, the high-ionization CIV 1548,1550 doublet emiss…
Context:Quasars radiating at extreme Eddington ratios (xA) are likely a prime mover of galactic evolution and have been hailed as potential distance indicators. Their properties are still scarcely known. Aims:We test the effectiveness of the selection criteria defined on the 4D Eigenvector 1 (4DE1) for identifying xA sources. We provide a quantitative description of their UV spectra in the redshift range 2<z<2.9. Methods:19 extreme quasar candidates were identified using 4DE1 selection criteria applied to SDSS spectra: AlIII1860/SiIII]1892>0.5 and CIII]1909/SiIII]1892<1. The emission line spec…
We present Reverberation Mapping (RM) results for 17 high-redshift, high-luminosity quasars with good quality R-band and emission line light curves. We are able to measure statistically significant lags for Ly_alpha (11 objects), SiIV (5 objects), CIV (11 objects), and CIII] (2 objects). Using our results and previous lag determinations taken from the literature, we present an updated CIV radius--luminosity relation and provide for the first time radius--luminosity relations for Ly_alpha, SiIV and CIII]. While in all cases the slope of the correlations are statistically significant, the zero p…
Deep observations have detected extended Ly$α$ emission nebulae surrounding tens of quasars at redshift 2 to 6. However, the metallicity of such extended haloes is still poorly understood. We perform a detailed analysis on a large sample of 80 quasars at $z\sim3$ based on MUSE-VLT data. We find clear evidence of extended emission of the UV nebular lines such as CIV or HeII for about 20$\%$ of the sample, while CIII] is only marginally detected in a few objects. By stacking the cubes we detect emission of CIV, HeII and CIII] out to a radius of about 45 kpc. CIV and HeII show a radial decline mu…
Observational evidence revealing the main mechanisms that accelerate quasar outflows has proven difficult to obtain, due to the complexity of the absorption features that this gas produces in the spectra of the emission sources. We build 36 composite outflow spectra, covering a large range of outflow and quasar parameters, by stacking broad ($>450\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$) absorption line systems in the spectra of SDSS-III/BOSS DR12 quasars. The two lines of the atomic doublet of CIV, with a separation of $\approx 497\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$, as well as those of other species appear well resolved in most…
