Using the MEGAFLOW survey, which consists of a combination of MUSE and UVES observations of 22 quasar fields selected to contain strong MgII absorbers, we measure covering fractions of CIV and MgII as a function of impact parameter $b$ using a novel Bayesian logistic regression method on unbinned data, appropriate for small samples. We also analyse how the CIV and MgII covering fractions evolve with redshift. In the MUSE data, we found 215 $z=1-1.5$ [OII] emitters with fluxes $>10^{-17}$ erg\,s$^{-1}$\,cm$^{-2}$ and within 250 kpc of quasar sight-lines. Over this redshift path $z=1-1.5$, we have 19 (32) CIV (MgII) absorption systems with rest-frame equivalent width (REW) $W_r>$0.05Å associated with at least one [OII] emitter. The covering fractions of $z\approx1.2$ CIV (MgII) absorbers with mean $W_r\approx$0.7Å (1.0Å), exceeds 50\% within 23$^{+62}_{-16}$ (46$^{+18}_{-13}$) kpc. Together with published studies, our results suggest that the covering fraction of CIV (MgII) becomes larger (smaller) with time, respectively. For absorption systems that have CIV but not MgII, we find in 73\% of the cases no [OII] counterpart. This may indicate that the CIV comes from the intergalactic medium (IGM), i.e. beyond 250 kpc, or that it is associated with lower-mass or quiescent galaxies.
Using deep (11.2hr) VLT/MUSE data from the MEGAFLOW survey, we report the first detection of extended MgII emission from a galaxy's halo that is probed by a quasar sightline. The MgII $λλ$ 2796,2803 emission around the $z = 0.702$ galaxy ($\log(M_*/\mathrm{M_\odot}) = 10.05^{+0.15}_{-0.11}$) is detected out to $\approx$25 kpc from the central galaxy and covers $1.0\times10^3$ kpc$^2$ above a surface brightness of $14\times10^{-19} \mathrm{erg} \mathrm{s}^{-1} \mathrm{cm}^{-2}\,\mathrm{arcsec}^{-2}$ ($2 σ$; integrated over 1200 km s$^{-1}$ =19A and averaged over $1.5 \;\mathrm{arcsec}^2$). MusE GAs FLOw and Wind (MEGAFLOW) XII. Rationale and design of a MgII survey of the cool circum-galactic medium with MUSE and UVES: The MEGAFLOW Survey
We study the link between gas flow events and key galaxy scaling relations: the relations between star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass (the main sequence, MS), gas metallicity and stellar mass (the mass-metallicity relation, MZR) and gas metallicity, stellar mass and SFR (the fundamental metallicity relation, FMR). Using all star-forming galaxies (SFGs) in the 22 MUSE fields of the MusE GAs FLOw and Wind (MEGAFLOW) survey, we derive the MS, MZR and FMR scaling relations for 385 SFGs with $M = 10^8 - 10^{11.5}$ $M_\odot$ at redshifts 0.35 < z < 0.85. Using the MUSE data and complementary …
We present results from our on-going MusE GAs FLOw and Wind (MEGAFLOW) survey, which consists of 22 quasar lines-of-sight, each observed with the integral field unit (IFU) MUSE and the UVES spectrograph at the ESO Very Large Telescopes (VLT). The goals of this survey are to study the properties of the circum-galactic medium around $z\sim1$ star-forming galaxies. The absorption-line selected survey consists of 79 strong \MgII\ absorbers (with rest-frame equivalent width (REW)$\gtrsim$0.3Å) and, currently, 86 associated galaxies within 100 projected~kpc of the quasar with stellar masses ($M_\sta…
The physical properties of galactic winds are one of the keys to understand galaxy formation and evolution. These properties can be constrained thanks to background quasar lines of sight (LOS) passing near star-forming galaxies (SFGs). We present the first results of the MusE GAs FLOw and Wind (MEGAFLOW) survey obtained of 2 quasar fields which have 8 MgII absorbers of which 3 have rest-equivalent width greater than 0.8 Å. With the new Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope (VLT), we detect 6 (75$\%$) MgII host galaxy candidates withing a radius of 30…
We use the MusE GAs FLOw and Wind (MEGAFLOW) survey to study the kinematics of extended disk-like structures of cold gas around $z\approx1$ star-forming galaxies. The combination of VLT/MUSE and VLT/UVES observations allows us to connect the kinematics of the gas measured through MgII quasar absorption spectroscopy to the kinematics and orientation of the associated galaxies constrained through integral field spectroscopy. Confirming previous results, we find that the galaxy-absorber pairs of the MEGAFLOW survey follow a strong bimodal distribution, consistent with a picture of MgII absorption…
Galactic outflows are thought to eject baryons back out to the circum-galactic medium (CGM). Studies based on metal absorption lines (MgII in particular) in the spectra of background quasars indicate that the gas is ejected anisotropically, with galactic winds likely leaving the host in a bi-conical flow perpendicular to the galaxy disk. In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of an outflow from a z = 0.7 "green-valley" galaxy (log($M_*$/$\mathrm{M}_\odot$) = 9.9; SFR = 0.5 $\mathrm{M}_\odot\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$) probed by two background sources part of the MUSE Gas Flow and Wind (MEGAFLOW…

We investigate whether the dust content of the circum-galactic medium (CGM) depends on the location of the quasar sightline with respect to the galaxy major-axis using 13 galaxy-MgII absorber pairs (9 - 81 kpc distance) from the MusE GAs FLOw and Wind (MEGAFLOW) survey at 0.4 < z < 1.4. The dust content of the CGM is obtained from [Zn/Fe] using Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) data. When a direct measurement of [Zn/Fe] is unavailable, we estimate the dust depletion from a method which consists in solving for the depletion from multiple singly ionized ions (e.g. MnII, CrII, Zn…
We report a definitive detection of chemically-enriched cool gas around massive, quiescent galaxies at z~0.4-0.7. The result is based on a survey of 37621 luminous red galaxy (LRG)-QSO pairs in SDSS DR12 with projected distance d<500 kpc. The LRGs are characterized by a predominantly old (age>~1Gyr) stellar population with 13% displaying [OII] emission features and LINER-like spectra. Both passive and [OII]-emitting LRGs share the same stellar mass distribution with a mean of <log(M*/Msun)>~11.4 and a dispersion of 0.2 dex. Both LRG populations exhibit associated strong MgII absorbers out to d…
We present a detailed spectroscopic analysis of a galaxy at $z \simeq 4.88$ that is, by chance, magnified $\sim 30 \times$ by gravitational lensing. Only three sources at $z \gtrsim 5$ are known with such high magnification. This particular source has been shown to exhibit widespread, high equivalent width CIV $λ$ 1549 Å emission, implying it is a unique example of a metal-poor galaxy with a hard radiation field, likely representing the galaxy population responsible for cosmic reionisation. Using UV nebular line ratio diagnostics, VLT/X-shooter observations rule out strong AGN activity, indica…
Non-resonant FeII* 2365, 2396, 2612, 2626 emission can potentially trace galactic winds in emission and provide useful constraints to wind models. From the 3'x3' mosaic of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF) obtained with the VLT/MUSE integral field spectrograph, we identify a statistical sample of 40 FeII* emitters and 50 MgII 2796, 2803 emitters from a sample of 271 [OII] 3726, 3729 emitters with reliable redshifts from z = 0.85 - 1.5 down to 2E-18 (3 sigma) ergs/s/cm^2 (for [OII]), covering the stellar mass range 10^8 - 10^11 Msun. The FeII* and MgII emitters follow the galaxy main sequence, …
We present an empirical connection between cold gas in galactic halos and star formation. Using a sample of more than 8,500 MgII absorbers from SDSS quasar spectra, we report the detection of a 15 sigma correlation between the rest equivalent width W0 of MgII absorbers and the associated OII luminosity, an estimator of star formation rate. This correlation has interesting implications: using only observable quantities we show that MgII absorbers trace a substantial fraction of the global OII luminosity density and recover the overall star formation history of the Universe derived from classica…
We present observations with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope of seven compact low-mass star-forming galaxies at redshifts, z,in the range 0.3161-0.4276, with various O3Mg2=[OIII]5007/MgII 2796+2803 and Mg2=MgII 2796/MgII 2803 emission-line ratios. We aim to study the dependence of leaking Lyman continuum (LyC) emission on the characteristics of MgII emission together with the dependences on other indirect indicators of escaping ionizing radiation. LyC emission with escape fractions fesc(LyC)=3.1-4.6 per cent is detected in four galaxies, whereas only 1sigma u…
We present an observational study of 22 broad absorption line quasars (BAL QSOs) at $3\lesssim z \lesssim5$ based on optical/near-IR spectroscopy, aiming to investigate quasar winds and their effects. The near-IR spectroscopy covers the \hb\ and/or \mgii\ broad emission lines (BELs) for these quasars, allowing us to estimate their central black hole (BH) masses in a robust way. We found that our BAL QSOs on average do not have a higher Eddington ratio than that from non-BAL QSOs matched in redshift and/or luminosity. In a subset consisting of seven strong BAL QSOs possessing sub-relativistic B…
We report our Keck/MOSFIRE and Magellan/LDSS3 spectroscopy for an [OII] Blob, OIIB10, that is a high-$z$ galaxy with spatially extended [OII]$λ\lambda3726,3729$ emission over 30 kpc recently identified by a Subaru large-area narrowband survey. The systemic redshift of OIIB10 is $z=1.18$ securely determined with [OIII]$λ\lambda4959,5007$ and H$β$ emission lines. We identify FeII$λ$2587 and MgII$λλ$2796,2804 absorption lines blueshifted from the systemic redshift by $80\pm50$ and $260\pm40$ km s$^{-1}$, respectively, which indicate gas outflow from OIIB10 with the velocity of $\sim 80-260$ km s$…
Limited constraints on the evolution of the Lyman Continuum (LyC) escape fraction represent one of the primary uncertainties in the theoretical determination of the reionization history. Due to the intervening intergalactic medium (IGM), the possibility of observing LyC photons directly in the epoch of reionization is highly unlikely. For this reason, multiple indirect probes of LyC escape have been identified, some of which are used to identify low-redshift LyC leakers (e.g. O32), while others are primarily useful at $z>6$ (e.g. [OIII]/[CII] far infrared emission). The flux ratio of the reson…
Using the exquisite MUSE eXtremely Deep Field data, we report the discovery of an MgII emission nebula with an area above a 2$σ$ significance level of 1000 proper kpc$^2$, providing the first panoramic view of the spatial distribution of magnesium in the intragroup medium of a low mass group of five star-forming galaxies at z=1.31. The galaxy group members are separated by less than 50 physical kpc in projection and $\approx$120 km/s in velocity space. The most massive galaxy has a stellar mass of 10$^{9.35}$ M$_\odot$ and shows an MgII P-Cygni line profile indicating the presence of an outflo…
Supernova (SN) Refsdal is the first multiply-imaged, highly-magnified, and spatially-resolved SN ever observed. The SN exploded in a highly-magnified spiral galaxy at z=1.49 behind the Frontier Fields Cluster MACS1149, and provides a unique opportunity to study the environment of SNe at high z. We exploit the time delay between multiple images to determine the properties of the SN and its environment, before, during, and after the SN exploded. We use the integral-field spectrograph MUSE on the VLT to simultaneously target all observed and model-predicted positions of SN Refsdal. We find MgII e…
Emission signatures from galactic winds provide an opportunity to directly map the outflowing gas, but this is traditionally challenging because of the low surface brightness. Using deep observations (27 hours) of the Hubble Deep Field South from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument, we identify signatures of an outflow in both emission and absorption from a spatially resolved galaxy at z = 1.29 with a stellar mass M* = 8 x 10^9 Msun, star formation rate SFR = 77 Msun/yr, and star formation rate surface brightness 1.6 Msun/kpc^2 within the [OII] half-light radius R_1/2,[OII]…

We now have mounting evidences that the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxies is polluted with metals processed through stars. The fate of these metals is however still an open question and several findings indicate that they remain poorly mixed. A powerful tool to study the low-density gas of the CGM is offered by absorption lines in quasar spectra, although the information retrieved is limited to 1D along the sightline. We report the serendipitous discovery of two close-by bright z_gal=1.148 extended galaxies with a fortuitous intervening z_abs=1.067 foreground absorber. MUSE IFU observati…
We present spatially-resolved echelle spectroscopy of an intervening MgII-FeII-MgI absorption-line system detected at $z_{\rm abs}=0.73379$ toward the giant gravitational arc PSZ1 G311.65-18.48. The absorbing gas is associated to an inclined disk-like star-forming galaxy, whose major axis is aligned with the two arc-segments reported here. We probe in absorption the galaxy's extended disk continuously, at $\approx 3$ kpc sampling, from its inner region out to $15\times$ the optical radius. We detect strong ($W_0^{2796}>0.3$ Å) coherent absorption along $13$ independent positions at impact para…
