We examine the UV and X-ray properties of 256 radio-quiet SDSS quasars (QSOs) observed in X-rays with Chandra and/or XMM-Newton in order to study the relationship between QSOs with broad CIV absorption lines (BALs; width >2000 km/s) and those with CIV mini-BALs (here defined to have widths of 1000--2000 km/s). Our sample includes 42 BAL and 48 mini-BAL QSOs. The relative X-ray brightness and hard spectral slopes of the mini-BAL population are, on average, intermediate between those of BAL and non-BAL QSOs, as might be expected if narrower and broader absorption line outflows are physically related. However, a significant population of mini-BALs has outflow velocities higher than would be expected for BAL QSOs of the same relative X-ray brightness. Consistenly strong X-ray absorption is apparently not required to accelerate at least some mini-BALs to high outflow velocities. Assuming the mini-BAL features are correctly attributed to intrinsic CIV absorption, we suggest that their observed properties may be explained if mini-BALs are "seeds" which can be accelerated to form BALs when sufficient X-ray shielding is present.
We also examine several QSOs with broad CIV absorption that have been recently reported to be unusually X-ray bright. Such cases are frequently mini-BAL QSOs, which as a population are generally brighter in X-rays than BAL QSOs. Pointed XMM-Newton observations also suggest that these sources (or unresolved neighbors) may have been previously observed in a high flux state.
Quasar outflows have been posited as a mechanism to couple super-massive black holes to evolution in their host galaxies. We use multi-epoch spectra from the Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based observatories to study the outflows in seven quasars that have CIV outflow lines ranging from a classic BAL to weaker/narrower "mini-BALs" across rest wavelengths of at least 850 $Å$ to 1650 $Å$. The CIV outflow lines all varied within a time frame of $\leq$ 1.9 yrs (rest). This includes equal occurrences of strengthening and weakening plus the emergence of a new BAL system at $-$38,800 km/s accompa…
We analyze VLT/UVES observations of the quasar SDSS J024221.87+004912.6. We identify four absorption outflow systems: a CIV BAL at $v\approx -18,000 \text{ km s}^{-1}$, and three narrower low-ionization systems with centroid velocities ranging from -1200 to -3500 km s$^{-1}$. These outflows show similar physical attributes to the [OIII] outflows studied by arXiv:1305.6922. We find that two of the systems are energetic enough to contribute to AGN feedback, with one system reaching above 5% of the quasar's Eddington luminosity. We also find that this system is at a distance of 67 kpc away from t…
The most robust way for determining the distance of quasar absorption outflows is the use of troughs from ionic excited states. The column density ratio between the excited and resonance states yields the outflow number density. Combined with a knowledge of the outflow's ionization parameter, a distance from the central source (R) can be determined. Here we report results from two surveys targeting outflows that show troughs from S IV. One survey includes 1091 SDSS and BOSS quasar spectra, and the other includes higher-quality spectra of 13 quasars observed with the Very Large Telescope. Our S…
We analyze VLT/X-shooter data for 7 quasars, where we study the relationships between their broad absorption line (BAL) and emission line outflows. We find: 1) the luminosity of the [OIII] $λ$5007 emission profile decreases with increasing electron number density (n$_e$) derived from the BAL outflow in the same quasar, 2) the measured velocity widths from the [OIII] emission features and CIV absorption troughs in the same object are similar, and 3) the mean radial velocity derived from the BAL outflow is moderately larger than the one from the [OIII] emission outflow. These findings can be exp…
The quasar PDS 456 (at redshift ~0.184) has a prototype ultra-fast outflow (UFO) measured in X-rays. This outflow is highly ionized with relativistic speeds, large total column densities log N_H(cm^-2) > 23, and large kinetic energies that could be important for feedback to the host galaxy. A UV spectrum of PDS 456 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope in 2000 contains one well-measured broad absorption line (BAL) at ~1346A (observed) that might be Ly-alpha at v ~ 0.06c or NV 1240 at v ~ 0.08c. However, we use photoionisation models and comparisons to other outflow quasars to show that thes…
Quasar outflows have long been recognized as potential contributors to the co-evolution between supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and their host galaxies. The role of outflows in AGN feedback processes can be better understood by placing observational constraints on wind locations and kinetic energies. We utilize broad absorption line (BAL) variability to investigate the properties of a sample of 71 BAL quasars with P$\thinspace$V broad absorption. The presence of P$\thinspace$V BALs indicates that other BALs like C$\thinspace$IV are saturated, such that variability in those lines favours cloud…
Ton 34 recently transitioned from non-absorbing quasar into a BALQSO.Here, we report new HST-STIS observations of this quasar. Along with CIV absorption, we also detect absorption by NV+Ly alpha and possibly OVI+Ly beta. We follow the evolution of the CIV BAL, and find that, for the slower outflowing material, the absorption trough varies little (if at all) on a rest-frame timescale of 2 yr. However, we detect a strong deepening of the absorption in the gas moving at larger velocities (-20,000 - -23,000 km s-1). The data is consistent with a multistreaming flow crossing our line of sight to th…
The early stage of massive galaxy evolution often involves outflows driven by a starburst or a central quasar plus cold mode accretion (infall), which adds to the mass build-up in the galaxies. To study the nature of these infall and outflows in the quasar environments, we have examined the correlation of narrow absorption lines (NALs) at positive and negative velocity shifts to other quasar properties, such as their broad absorption-line (BAL) outflows and radio-loudness, using spectral data from SDSS-BOSS DR12. Our results show that the incidence of associated absorption lines (AALs) and out…
We conducted a survey of quasar outflows using the VLT/X-shooter spectrograph. When choosing the 14 BAL and mini-BALs comprising this sample, the data did not cover the S IV and S IV* troughs, whose ratio can be used to determine the distance of the outflows from the central source (R). Therefore, this "Blind Survey" is unbiased towards a particular distance scale. Out of the eight outflows where R can be measured, six have R > 100 pc (spanning the range 100-4500 pc), one has R > 10 pc, and only one (at R < 60 pc) is compatible with a much smaller R scale. At least two of the outflows have a k…
We present the first systematic study of 50 low redshift ($0.66 < z < 1.63$) iron low-ionization broad absorption-line quasars (FeLoBALQs) using $SimBAL$ which represents a more than five-fold increase in the number of FeLoBALQs with detailed absorption line spectral analyses. We found the outflows have a wide range of ionization parameters, $-4\lesssim\log U\lesssim 1.2$ and densities, $2.8\lesssim\log n\lesssim8\ \rm[cm^{-3}]$. The objects in our sample showed FeLoBAL gas located at a wide range of distances $0\lesssim\log R\lesssim 4.4$ [pc], although we do not find any evidence for disk wi…
Quasar accretion-disk outflows might play an important role in galaxy evolution, but they are notoriously difficult to study due to line saturation and blending problems in the Ly-alpha forest. We circumvent these problems by constructing median composite spectra of diverse broad absorption lines (BALs) and `mini-BALs' in SDSS-III BOSS quasars at redshifts 2.3 < z < 3.5. Sorting by CIV 1549,1551 absorption-line strength with AlIII 1855,1863 as an additional indicator of low ionisations (LoBALs) we find the following: (1) Deeper and broader BALs are accompanied by weaker HeII 1640 emission line…
The galactocentric distance of quasar absorption outflows are conventionally determined using absorption troughs from excited states, a method hindered by severely saturated or self-blended absorption troughs. We propose a novel method to estimate the size of a broad absorption line (BAL) region which partly obscures an emission line region by assuming virialized gas in the emission region surrounding a supermassive black hole with known mass. When a spiky Lya1216 line emission is present at the flat bottom of the deep Nv1240 absorption trough, the size of BAL region can be estimated. We have …
Broad absorption line (BAL) features in quasar spectra reveal an unambiguous signature of energetic outflows from central supermassive black holes, and thus BAL quasars are prime targets for investigating the potential process of luminous quasar feedback on galaxies. We analyzed the rest-UV spectrum of an "overlapping trough" iron low-ionization broad absorption line quasar (FeLoBAL) SDSS J135246.37+423923.5 using the novel spectral synthesis code SimBAL (Leighly et al. 2018) and discovered an extraordinarily fast and energetic BAL outflow. Our analysis revealed outflow velocities reaching $\s…

We determine the physical conditions and location of the outflow material seen in the mini-BAL quasar SDSS J1111+1437 (z = 2.138). These results are based on the analysis of a high S/N, medium-resolution VLT/X- shooter spectrum. The main outflow component spans the velocity range -1500 to -3000 km s$^{-1}$ and has detected absorption troughs from both high-ionization species: C IV , N V , O VI , Si IV , P V , and S IV ; and low-ionization species: H I , C II , Mg II , Al II , Al III , Si II , and Si III . Measurements of these troughs allow us to derive an accurate photoionization solution for…
We present continued analysis of a sample of low-redshift iron low-ionization broad absorption-line quasars (FeLoBALQs). Choi et al. (2022) presented $SimBAL$ spectral analysis of BAL outflows in 50 objects. Leighly et al. (2022) analyzed optical emission lines of 30 of those 50 objects and found that they are characterized by either a high accretion rate ($L_\mathrm{Bol}/L_\mathrm{Edd}>0.3$) or low accretion rate ($0.03<L_\mathrm{Bol}/L_\mathrm{Edd}<0.3$). We report that the outflow velocity is inversely correlated with the BAL location among the high accretion rate objects, with the highest …
We present a detailed study of the optical and NIR emission and absorption line spectrum of the quasar SDSS J163345.22+512748.4. We discovered on the newly acquired NIR spectrum a highly meta-stable neutral helium broad absorption line (BAL) \heiozetz\ with a width of $\sim$ 2000 \kmps\ and a blueshift of $\sim$ 7000 \kmps\ in the velocity space. The BAL system is also significantly detected in \mgii\ and \heiteen. We estimate a column density of $(5.0 \pm 1.7) \times 10^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ for the HeI*(2~$^3$S) level, and infer an ionization parameter of $U_{A} = 10^{-1.9\pm 0.2}$ for the BAL out…
Both theory and observations suggest that outflows driven by an active central supermassive black hole (SMBH) has a feedback effect on shaping the global properties of the host galaxy. However, whether feedback from the outflow is effective, and if so, whether it is positive or negative, has long been controversial. Here, using the latest catalog from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we use the flux ratio of the [O II] to [Ne V] emission lines as a proxy to compare the star formation rate (SFR) in the hosts of quasars with different types of broad absorption lines (BALs): low-ionization (L…
We analyze the VLT/UVES spectrum of the quasar SDSS J143907.5-010616.7, retrieved from the UVES Spectral Quasar Absorption Database. We identify two outflow systems in the spectrum: a mini broad absorption line (mini-BAL) system and a narrow absorption line (NAL) system. We measure the ionic column densities of the mini-BAL ($v=-1550$ km s$^{-1}$) outflow, which has excited state absorption troughs of Fe II. We determine that the electron number density $\log{n_e}=3.4^{+0.1}_{-0.1}$ based on the ratios between the excited and ground state abundances of Fe II, and find the kinetic luminosity of…
It is common to assume that all narrow absorption lines (NALs) at extreme high-velocity shifts form in cosmologically intervening gas or galaxies unrelated to quasars. However, previous detailed studies of individual quasars have shown that some NALs at these large velocity shifts do form in high-speed quasar ejecta. We search for extreme high-velocity NAL outflows (with speeds $\sim$0.1-0.2c) based on relationships with associated absorption lines (AALs) and broad absorption-line (BAL) outflows. We find that high-velocity NALs are strongly correlated with AALs, BALs, and radio loudness, indic…
Using a sample of $\simeq$144,000 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 14 we investigate the outflow properties, evident both in absorption and emission, of high-ionization Broad Absorption Line (BAL) and non-BAL quasars with redshifts 1.6 $\lesssim z \leq$ 3.5 and luminosities 45.3 $< \log_{10}(L_{bol}) < $ 48.2 erg s$^{-1}$. Key to the investigation is a continuum and emission-line reconstruction scheme, based on mean-field independent component analysis, that allows the kinematic properties of the CIV$λ$1550 emission line to be compared directly for both non-BAL and BAL qu…
We report on the discovery of a rare case of spatially and kinematically resolved galactic scale outflow at intermediate redshift, based on VLT/MUSE optical integral field spectroscopic observation of the quasar HE 0238$-$1904. This classical non-broad absorption line (non-BAL) quasar at $z=0.631$ remains underexplored in its optical emission lines, though its UV absorption lines are well-studied. We identify a superbubble driven by HE 0238$-$1904 from the emission line morphology, line ratio diagnostics and kinematics, showing a one-sided outflow reaching a projected distance of $R \sim 55$ k…
Broad absorption lines (BALs) in quasar spectra identify high velocity outflows that might exist in all quasars and could play a major role in feedback to galaxy evolution. The viability of BAL outflows as a feedback mechanism depends on their kinetic energies, as derived from the outflow velocities, column densities, and distances from the central quasar. We estimate these quantities for the quasar, Q1413+1143 (redshift $z_e = 2.56$), aided by the first detection of PV $λλ$1118,1128 BAL variability in a quasar. In particular, PV absorption at velocities where the CIV trough does not reach zer…
We present the analysis of the absorption troughs of six outflows observed in quasar SDSS J1130+0411 ($z \approx 3.98$) with radial velocities ranging from $-2400$ to $-15,400$ km s$^{-1}$. These spectra were taken with the Very Large Telescope/Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph over the rest frame wavelength range of $1135-1890$ Å. In the main outflow system ($v \approx -3200$ km s$^{-1}$), we identify Fe II and several Fe II* absorption troughs as well as Si II and Si II* troughs, which we use to determine the electron number density $\log n_e = 2.6_{-0.7}^{+0.8}$ cm$^{-3}$. Using t…
We present an observational study of 22 broad absorption line quasars (BAL QSOs) at $3\lesssim z \lesssim5$ based on optical/near-IR spectroscopy, aiming to investigate quasar winds and their effects. The near-IR spectroscopy covers the \hb\ and/or \mgii\ broad emission lines (BELs) for these quasars, allowing us to estimate their central black hole (BH) masses in a robust way. We found that our BAL QSOs on average do not have a higher Eddington ratio than that from non-BAL QSOs matched in redshift and/or luminosity. In a subset consisting of seven strong BAL QSOs possessing sub-relativistic B…
We report the discovery of unusual broad absorption lines (BALs) in the bright quasar SDSS J075133.35+134548.3 at z~1, and present a detailed study of BAL and emission lines using the archived and newly obtained optical and NIR spectroscopic data. The BALs are detected tentatively in Mg II, Al III and reliably in HeI*3889, HeI*10830, which show complexed velocity structures splitting into two components: a high-velocity component (HV), with a blueshifted velocity range of -9300 ~ -3500 km/s, can be reliably detected tentatively in Mg II, Al III and reliably in HeI* 10830, whereas it is undetec…
We report the discovery of highly reddening and hydrogen Balmer and metastable helium broad absorption lines in the quasar SDSS J145057.28+530007.6, based on the optical and near-infrared spectra taken from the SDSS-III/BOSS and the TripleSpec observations. The nuclear continuum, Balmer decrement and absorption-line depth analyses suggest that (1) the accretion disk is completely obscured and the covering factor of the broad-line region (BLR) is only $0.39\pm0.03$, (2) the power-law continuum is reddened by the SMC extinction law of $E(B-V )=0.72\pm 0.01$ mag and the dusty materials are mainly…
A recently-discovered class of outflows, extremely high-velocity outflows (EHVOs), may be key to understanding feedback processes as it is likely the most powerful in terms of mass-energy. These EHVOs have been observed at redshifts 1.052 < z_em < 7.641, but the potential connection with outflows in emission had not been studied. We find that EHVOs, albeit their small numbers at the moment, appear to show distinct CIV and HeII properties. In particular, EHVOs are more predominant in quasars with large blueshifts of the CIV emission line, suggesting a connection between emission and absorption …
We present a survey of extremely high-velocity outflows (EHVOs) in quasars, defined by speeds between 0.1c and 0.2c. This region of the parameter space has not been included in previous surveys, but it might present the biggest challenge for theoretical models and it might be a large contributor to feedback due to the outflows' potentially large kinetic power. Using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we find 40 quasar spectra with broad EHVO CIV absorption, 10 times more than the number of previously known cases. We characterize the EHVO absorption and find that in 26 cases, CIV is accompanied by N…
We isolate a set of quasars that exhibit emergent C iv broad absorption lines (BALs) in their spectra by comparing spectra in the SDSS Data Release 7 and the SDSS/BOSS Data Releases 9 and 10. After visually defining a set of emergent BALs, follow-up observations were obtained with the Gemini Observatory for 105 quasars. We find an emergence rate consistent with the previously reported disappearance rate of BAL quasars given the relative numbers of non-BAL and BAL quasars in the SDSS. We find candidate newly emerged BALs are preferentially drawn from among BALs with smaller balnicity indices, s…
We found a broad absorption line (BAL) outflow in the VLT/UVES spectrum of the quasar SDSS J235702.54-004824.0, in which we identified four subcomponents. We measured the column densities of the ions in one of the subcomponents ($v$ = -1600 km s$^{-1}$), which include O I and Fe II. We found the kinetic luminosity of this component to be at most ~2.4% of the quasar's Eddington luminosity. This is near the amount required to contribute to AGN feedback. We also examined the time-variability of a C IV mini-BAL found at $v$ = -8700 km s$^{-1}$, which shows a shallower and narrower absorption featu…
We have investigated a sample of 2099 broad absorption line (BAL) quasars with z=1.7-2.2 built from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release Seven and the Wide-field Infrared Survey. This sample is collected from two BAL quasar samples in the literature, and refined by our new algorithm. Correlations of outflow velocity and strength with hot dust indicator (beta_NIR) and other quasar physical parameters, such as Eddington ratio, luminosity and UV continuum slope, are explored in order to figure out which parameters drive outflows. Here beta_NIR is the near-infrared continuum slope, a good ind…
We report on the first detection of extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) absorption variability in the NeVIII 770,780 mini-broad absorption line (mini-BAL) in the spectrum of the quasar (QSO) PG 1206+459. The observed equivalent width (EW) of the NeVIII doublet show a ~4 sigma variation over a timescale of 2.8 months in the QSO's rest-frame. Both members of the NeVIII doublet exhibit non-black saturation, indicating partial coverage of the continuum source. An increase in the NeVIII covering fraction from f_c = 0.59\pm0.05 to 0.72\pm0.03 is observed over the same period. The NeVIII profiles are too highl…
We present a time variability analysis of broad absorption lines (BAL; spread over the velocity range of 5800-29000 km/s) seen in the spectrum of J132216.25+052446.3 (z(em)= 2.04806) at ten different epochs spanning over 19 years. The strongest absorption component (BAL-A; spread over 5800-9900 km/s) is made up of several narrow components having velocity separations close to C IV doublet splitting. The C IV, N V, and Si IV absorption from BAL-A show correlated optical depth variability without significant changes in the velocity structure. A very broad and shallow absorption (BAL-C; spread ov…
Observational evidence revealing the main mechanisms that accelerate quasar outflows has proven difficult to obtain, due to the complexity of the absorption features that this gas produces in the spectra of the emission sources. We build 36 composite outflow spectra, covering a large range of outflow and quasar parameters, by stacking broad ($>450\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$) absorption line systems in the spectra of SDSS-III/BOSS DR12 quasars. The two lines of the atomic doublet of CIV, with a separation of $\approx 497\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$, as well as those of other species appear well resolved in most…
We discover that some of the broad absorption lines (BALs) are actually a complex of narrow absorption lines (NALs). As a pilot study of this type of BAL, we show this discovery through a typical example in this paper. Utilizing the two-epoch observations of J002710.06-094435.3 (hereafter J0027-0944) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we find that each of the C IV and Si IV BAL troughs contains at least four NAL doublets. By resolving the Si IV BAL into multiple NALs, we present the following main results and conclusions. First, all these NALs show coordinated variations between the two…
SDSS J1634+2049 is a local (z = 0.1293) infrared-luminous quasar with LIR= 10^11.91 Lsun. We present a detailed multiwavelength study of both the host galaxy and the nucleus. The host galaxy demonstrates violent, obscured star formation activities with SFR ~ 140 Msun yr^-1, estimated from either the PAH emission or IR luminosity. The optical to NIR spectra exhibit a blueshifted narrow cuspy component in Hb, HeI5876,10830 and other emission lines consistently with an offset velocity of ~900 km/s, as well as additional blueshifting phenomena in high-ionization lines , while there exist blueshift…
In symbiotic binaries, jets and disk winds may be integral to the physics of accretion onto white dwarfs from cool giants. The persistent outflow from symbiotic star MWC 560 (=V694 Mon) is known to manifest as broad absorption lines (BALs), most prominently at the Balmer transitions. We report the detection of high-ionization BALs from C IV, Si IV, N V, and He II in International Ultraviolet Explorer spectra obtained on 1990 April 29-30, when an optical outburst temporarily erased the obscuring 'iron curtain' of absorption troughs from Fe II and similar ions. The C IV and Si IV BALs reached ma…
Broad absorption lines seen in some quasars prove the existence of ionized plasma outflows from the accretion disk. Outflows together with powerful jets are important feedback processes. Understanding physics behind BAL outflows might be a key to comprehend Galaxy Evolution as a whole. First radio-loud BAL quasar was discovered in 1997 and this discovery has opened new possibilities for studies of the BAL phenomena, this time on the basis of radio emission. However, information about the radio structures, orientation and age of BAL quasars is still very limited due to weak radio emission and s…
Broad absorption lines (BALs) found in a significant fraction of quasar spectra identify high-velocity outflows that might be present in all quasars and could be a major factor in feedback to galaxy evolution. Understanding the nature of these flows requires further constraints on their physical properties, including their column densities, for which well-studied BALs, such as CIV 1548,1551, typically provide only a lower limit because of saturation effects. Low-abundance lines, such as PV 1118,1128, indicate large column densities, implying outflows more powerful than measurements of CIV alon…
There is a large diversity in the C IV broad absorption line (BAL) profile among BAL quasars (BALQs). We quantify this diversity by exploring the distribution of the C IV BAL properties, FWHM, maximum depth of absorption and its velocity shift ($v_{\rm md}$), using the SDSS DR7 quasar catalogue. We find the following: (i) Although the median C IV BAL profile in the quasar rest-frame becomes broader and shallower as the UV continuum slope ($α_{\rm UV}$ at 1700-3000 A) gets bluer, the median individual profile in the absorber rest-frame remains identical, and is narrow (FWHM = 3500 km/s) and dee…
We study the relationship between the broad absorption lines (BALs) that can be decomposed into multiple narrow absorption lines and those that cannot (hereafter Type N and Type S BAL, respectively), based on the analysis of three BAL systems (systems A, B, and C) in two-epoch spectra of quasar SDSS J113009.40+495247.9 (hereafter J1130+4952). As the velocity decreases (from systems A to C), these three BAL systems show a gradual transition from Type S to Type N BAL, and their equivalent widths (EWs) and profile shapes vary in a regular way. We ascribe the absorption line variability in J1130+4…
We measure the location and energetics of a SIV BALQSO outflow. This ouflow has a velocity of 10,800 km s$^{-1}$ and a kinetic luminosity of $10^{45.7}$ erg s$^{-1}$, which is 5.2% of the Eddington luminosity of the quasar. From collisional excitation models of the observed SIV$/$SIV* absorption troughs, we measure a hydrogen number density of $n_\mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle H}=10^{4.3}$ cm$^{-3}$, which allows us to determine that the outflow is located 110 pc from the quasar. Since SIV is formed in the same ionization phase as CIV, our results can be generalized to the ubiquitous CIV BALs. Our…
The physical properties and dynamical behavior of Broad Absorption Line (BAL) outflows are crucial themes in understanding the connections between galactic centers and their hosts. FeLoBALs (identified with the presence of low-ionization Fe II BALs) are a peculiar class of quasar outflows that constitute approximately 1% of the BAL population. With their large column densities and apparent outflow kinetic luminosities, FeLoBALs appear to be exceptionally powerful and are strong candidates for feedback in galaxy evolution. We conducted variability studies of 12 FeLoBAL quasars with emission red…
We present a catalog of high-velocity CIV $λ$ 1548,1551 mini-Broad Absorption Lines (mini-BALs) in the archives of the VLT-UVES and Keck-HIRES spectrographs. We identify high-velocity CIV mini-BALs based on smooth rounded BAL-like profiles with velocity blueshifts $<$ $-$4000 km/s and widths in the range 70 $\lesssim$ FWHM(1548) $\lesssim$ 2000 km/s (for $λ$1548 alone). We find 105 mini-BALs in 44 quasars from a total sample of 638 quasars. The fraction of quasars with at least one mini-BAL meeting our criteria is roughly $\sim9$% after correcting for incomplete velocity coverage. However, the…
New near- and far-ultraviolet (NUV and FUV) HST spectra of Mrk 231, the nearest quasar known, are combined with ground-based optical spectra to study the remarkable dichotomy between the FUV and NUV-optical spectral regions in this object. The FUV emission-line features are faint, broad, and highly blueshifted (up to ~7000 km/s), with no significant accompanying absorption. In contrast, the profiles of the NUV absorption features resemble those of the optical Na I D, He I, and Ca II H and K lines, exhibiting broad blue-shifted troughs that overlap in velocity space with the FUV emission-line f…
We present a detailed analysis of time variability of two distinct C IV broad absorption line (BAL) components seen in the spectrum of J162122.54+075808.4 ($z_{em}$ = 2.1394) using observations from SDSS, NTT and SALT taken at seven different epochs spanning about 15 years. The blue-BAL component (with an ejection velocity, $v_{\rm e}\sim37,500$ kms$^{-1}$) is an emerging absorption that shows equivalent width variations and kinematic shifts consistent with acceleration. The red-BAL component ($v_{\rm e} \sim 15,400$ kms$^{-1}$) is a three component absorption. One of the components is emergin…
Broad absorption line quasars are among the objects presenting the fastest outflows. The launching mechanism itself is not completely understood. Models in which they could be launched from the accretion disk, and then curved and accelerated by the effect of the radiation pressure, have been presented. We conducted an extensive observational campaign, from radio to optical band, to collect information about their nature and test the models present in the literature, the main dichotomy being between a young scenario and an orientation one. We found a variety of possible orientations, morphologi…
Quasar outflows are fundamental components of quasar environments that might play an important role in feedback to galaxy evolution. We report on the emergence of a remarkable new outflow absorption-line system in the quasar PG1411+442 (redshift ~0.089) detected in the UV and visible with the Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph and the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph, respectively. This new "transient'' system contains thousands of lines, including FeII and FeII* from excited states up to 3.89 eV, HI* Balmer lines, NaI D 5890,5896, and the first detection of HeI* 5876 in a quas…
