We present an analysis of the orientation effects in SDSS quasar composite spectra. In a previous work we have shown that the equivalent width EW of the [OIII] λ5008Å line is a reliable indicator of the inclination of the accretion disk. Here, we have selected a sample of ~15,000 quasars from the SDSS 7th Data Release and divided it in sub-samples with different values of EW([OIII]). We find inclination effects both on broad and narrow quasars emission lines, among which an increasing broadening from low to high EW for the broad lines and a decreasing importance of the blue component for the narrow lines. These effects are naturally explained with a variation of source inclination from nearly face-on to edge-on, confirming the goodness of EW([OIII]) as an orientation indicator. Moreover, we suggest that orientation effects could explain, at least partially, the origin of the anticorrelation between [OIII] and FeII intensities, i.e. the well known Eigenvector 1.
The orientation of the disk of material accreting onto supermassive black holes that power quasars is one of most important quantities that are needed to understand quasars -- both individually and in the ensemble average. We present a hypothesis for determining comparatively edge-on orientation in a subset of quasars (both radio loud and radio quiet). If confirmed, this orientation indicator could be applicable to individual quasars without reference to radio or X-ray data and could identify some 10-20% of quasars as being more edge-on than average, based only on moderate resolution and signa…
We have constructed a sample of 386 radio-loud quasars with z < 0.75 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in order to investigate orientation effects on black hole mass estimates. Orientation is estimated using radio core dominance measurements based on FIRST survey maps. Black hole masses are estimated from virial-based scaling relationships using H-beta, and compared to the stellar velocity dispersion (sigma_*), predicted using the Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) of [O III] 5007, which tracks mass via the M-sigma_* relation. We find that the FWHM of Hbeta correlates significantly with radio c…
A minority of the optically selected quasar population are red at optical wavelengths due to the presence of dust along the line-of-sight. A key focus of many red quasar studies is to understand their relationship with the overall quasar population: are they blue quasars observed at a (slight) inclination angle or do they represent a transitional phase in the evolution of quasars? Identifying fundamental differences between red and blue quasars is key to discriminate between these two paradigms. To robustly explore this, we have uniformly selected quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey with…
Core-extremely red quasars (core-ERQ) have been proposed to represent an intermediate evolutionary phase in which a heavily obscured quasar is blowing out the circumnuclear interstellar medium with very energetic outflows prior to becoming an optical quasar. We revise the general UV and optical emission line properties of core-ERQ in the context of the AGN orientation-based unification scenario. We use diagnostic diagrams based on ultraviolet (UV) emission line ratios and UV-optical line kinematic information to compare the physical and kinematic gas properties of core-ERQ with those of other …
This work provides evidence that a large fraction of \ion{C}{IV} narrow absorption lines (NALs) seen along the line of sight to distant quasars are due to accretion disk winds, while also seeking to understand the relationship between NALs and certain quasar-intrinsic properties. We extend the results from past work in the literature using $\sim105,000$ NALs from a sample of $\sim58,000$ SDSS quasars. The primary results of this work are summarized as follows: (1) the velocity distribution (${\rm d}N/{\rm d}β$) of NALs is not a function of radio loudness (or even detection) once marginalized b…
Radio core dominance measurements, an indicator of jet orientation, sometimes rely on core flux density measurements from large-area surveys like Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty cm (FIRST) that have an angular resolution of only 5''. Such low-resolution surveys often fail to resolve cores from the extended emission resulting in an erroneous measurement. We focus on investigating this resolution effect for a sample of 119 radio-loud quasars. We obtained continuum observations from NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) at 10 GHz in A-array with a 0.2'' resolution. Our measurements …
The incidence of broad absorption lines (BALs) in quasar samples is often interpreted in the context of a geometric unification model consisting of an accretion disc and an associated outflow. We use the the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasar sample to test this model by examining the equivalent widths (EWs) of CIV 1550Å, Mg II 2800Å, [OIII] 5007Å and C III] 1909Å. We find that the emission line EW distributions in BAL and non-BAL quasars are remarkably similar -- a property that is inconsistent with scenarios in which a BAL outflow rises equatorially from a geometrically thin, optically t…
The unification model for powerful radio galaxies and radio-loud quasars postulates that these objects are intrinsically the same but viewed along different angles. Herschel Space Observatory data permit the assessment of that model in the far-infrared spectral window. We analyze photometry from Spitzer and Herschel for the distant 3CR hosts, and find that radio galaxies and quasars have different mid-infrared, but indistinguishable far-infrared colors. Both these properties, the former being orientation dependent and the latter orientation invariant, are in line with expectations from the uni…
Several observed spectral properties of quasars are believed to be influenced by quasar orientation. In this investigation we examine the effect of orientation on the Mg II line located at 2798 Å in a sample of 36 radio-loud quasars, with orientation angles having been obtained in a previous study using radio observations. We find no significant relationship between orientation angle and either Mg II line full-width at half-maximum or equivalent width. The lack of correlation with inclination angle contradicts previous studies which also use radio data as a proxy for inclination angle and sugg…
We present an analysis of the average spectral properties of 12,000 SDSS quasars as a function of accretion disc inclination, as measured from the equivalent width of the [O III] 5007Å line. The use of this indicator on a large sample of quasars from the SDSS DR7 has proven the presence of orientation effects on the features of UV/optical spectra, confirming the presence of outflows in the NLR gas and that the geometry of the BLR is disc-like. Relying on the goodness of this indicator, we are now using it to investigate other bands/components of AGN. Specifically, the study of the UV/optical/I…
Radio emission from radio-quiet quasars may be due to star formation in the quasar host galaxy, to a jet launched by the supermassive black hole, or to relativistic particles accelerated in a wide-angle radiatively-driven outflow. In this paper we examine whether radio emission from radio-quiet quasars is a byproduct of star formation in their hosts. To this end we use infrared spectroscopy and photometry from Spitzer and Herschel to estimate or place upper limits on star formation rates in hosts of ~300 obscured and unobscured quasars at z<1. We find that low-ionization forbidden emission lin…
In this study, we investigated the orientation model of Broad Absorption Line (BAL) quasars using a sample of sources that are common in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release (DR)-16 quasar catalog and Very Large Array (VLA)-Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty Centimeters (FIRST) survey. Using the radio cut-out images from the FIRST survey, we first designed a deep learning model using convolutional neural networks (CNN) to classify the quasar radio morphologies into the core-only, young jet, single lobe, or triples. These radio morphologies are further sub-classified into core-domi…
Using a sample of $\simeq$144,000 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 14 we investigate the outflow properties, evident both in absorption and emission, of high-ionization Broad Absorption Line (BAL) and non-BAL quasars with redshifts 1.6 $\lesssim z \leq$ 3.5 and luminosities 45.3 $< \log_{10}(L_{bol}) < $ 48.2 erg s$^{-1}$. Key to the investigation is a continuum and emission-line reconstruction scheme, based on mean-field independent component analysis, that allows the kinematic properties of the CIV$λ$1550 emission line to be compared directly for both non-BAL and BAL qu…
We report the results of analysis of the Hbeta emission-line region of a sample of thirty low-redshift (z<1) iron low-ionization broad absorption line quasars (FeLoBALQs). Eleven of these objects are newly classified as FeLoBALQs. A matched sample of 132 unabsorbed quasars was analyzed in parallel. The emission lines showed the well known anticorrelation between the [OIII] and FeII emission (Boroson & Green 1992). Using a summary statistic called E1 to quantify this anticorrelation, we found that while the distribution of E1 for the unabsorbed quasars has a single peak, the FeLoBALQs have a bi…
We address the effect of orientation of the accretion disk plane and the geometry of the broad-line region (BLR) as part of an effort to understand the distribution of quasars in the optical plane of the quasar main sequence. We utilize the photoionization code CLOUDY to model the BLR incorporating the grossly underestimated form factor ($f$). Treating the aspect of viewing angle appropriately, we confirm the dependence of the $R_{\mathrm{FeII}}$ sequence on Eddington ratio and on the related observational trends - as a function of the SED shape, cloud density and composition, verified from pr…
To elucidate the intrinsic broadband infrared (IR) emission properties of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we analyze the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 87 z<0.5 Palomar-Green (PG) quasars. While the Elvis AGN template with a moderate far-IR correction can reasonably match the SEDs of the AGN components in ~60% of the sample (and is superior to alternatives such as that by Assef), it fails on two quasar populations: 1) hot-dust-deficient (HDD) quasars that show very weak emission thoroughly from the near-IR to the far-IR, and 2) warm-dust-deficient (WDD) quasars that have similar hot du…
Quasars are rapidly accreting supermassive black holes at the center of massive galaxies. They display a broad range of properties across all wavelengths, reflecting the diversity in the physical conditions of the regions close to the central engine. These properties, however, are not random, but form well-defined trends. The dominant trend is known as Eigenvector 1, where many properties correlate with the strength of optical iron and [OIII] emission. The main physical driver of Eigenvector 1 has long been suspected to be the quasar luminosity normalized by the mass of the hole (the Eddington…
New reverberation mapping measurements of the size of the optical iron emission-line region in quasars are provided, and a tentative size-luminosity relation for this component is reported. Combined with lag measurements in low-luminosity sources, the results imply an emission-region size that is comparable to and at most twice that of the H$β$ line, and is characterized by a similar luminosity dependence. This suggests that the physics underlying the formation of the optical iron blends in quasars may be similar to that of other broad emission lines.
We constrain gas inflow speeds in star-forming galaxies with color gradients consistent with inside-out disk growth. Our method combines new measurements of disk orientation with previously described circumgalactic absorption in background quasar spectra. Two quantities, a position angle and an axis ratio, describe the projected shape of each galactic disk on the sky, leaving an ambiguity about which side of the minor axis is tipped toward the observer. This degeneracy regarding the 3D orientation of disks has compromised previous efforts to measure gas inflow speeds. We present HST and Keck/L…
We recently proposed the equivalent width (EW) of the narrow [OIII]5007Å emission line as an orientation indicator for active galactic nuclei. We tested this method on about $12,300$ optically selected broad line quasars from the SDSS 7th Data Release at redshift $z < 0.8$ and with full width at half-maximum values of broad emission lines (H$α$, H$β$, and MgII) larger than $2000$ km/s. We now examine their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) using broad band photometry from the near-infrared to the ultraviolet to look for variations in the overall shape as a function of the EW[OIII]. We find …
We discuss a probe of the contribution of wind-related shocks to the radio emission in otherwise radio-quiet quasars. Given 1) the non-linear correlation between UV and X-ray luminosity in quasars, 2) that such correlation leads to higher likelihood of radiation-line-driven winds in more luminous quasars, and 3) that luminous quasars are more abundant at high redshift, deep radio observations of high-redshift quasars are needed to probe potential contributions from accretion disk winds. We target a sample of 50 $z\simeq 1.65$ color-selected quasars that span the range of expected accretion dis…
In the manuscript, the blue quasar SDSS J105816.19+544310.2 (=SDSS J1058+5443) at redshift 0.479 is reported as so-far the best candidate of true type-2 quasar with disappearance of central BLRs. There are so-far no definite conclusions on the very existence of true type-2 AGN, mainly due to detected optical broad emission lines in high quality spectra of some previously classified candidates of true type-2 AGN. Here, not similar as previous reported candidates for true type-2 AGN among narrow emission-line galaxies with weak AGN activities but strong stellar lights, the definite blue quasar S…
Since the discovery of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and their subclasses, a unification scheme of AGN has been long sought. Orientation-based unified models predict that some of the diversity within AGN subclasses can be explained by the different viewing angles of the observer. Several orientation categorisations have been suggested, but a widely applicable measure has yet to be found. Using the properties of the ultraviolet and optical broad emission lines of quasars, in particular the velocity offsets and line widths of high-ionisation CIV and low-ionisation MgII lines, a correlation has be…
In the manuscript, we discuss properties of SDSS J1451+2709, a normal blue quasar but mis-classified as a HII galaxy in the BPT diagram (called as a mis-classified quasar). The emission lines around H$α$ and H$β$ are well measured by different model functions with broad Balmer lines being described by Gaussian or Lorentz functions, in the SDSS spectrum in 2007 and in the KPNO spectrum in 1990. After considering variations of broad emission lines, different model functions lead to different fluxes of narrow emission lines, but the different narrow emission line flux ratios lead the SDSS J1451+2…
We use multi-epoch quasar spectroscopy to determine how accurately single-epoch spectroscopy can locate quasars in emission-line parameter space in order to inform investigations where time-resolved spectroscopy is not available. We explore the improvements in emission-line characterization that result from using non-parametric information from many lines as opposed to a small number of parameters for a single line, utilizing reconstructions based on an independent component analysis applied to the data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping project. We find that most of the q…
We present VLT-SINFONI near infra-red spectra of 26 new heavily reddened quasar candidates selected from the UKIDSS-LAS, VISTA VHS and VIKING imaging surveys. This new sample extends our reddened quasar search to both brighter and fainter luminosities. 25 of the 26 candidates are confirmed to be broad line quasars with redshifts $0.7<z<2.6$ and dust extinctions $0.5<E(B-V)<3.0$. Combining with previously identified samples, we study the H$α$, H$β$ and [OIII] emission line properties in 22 heavily reddened quasars with $L_{bol}\approx 10^{47}$ erg/s and $z>2$. We present the first comparison of…
The quadruply lensed quasar HE0435-1223 shows a clear microlensing effect that affects differently the blue and red wings of the H$α$ line profile in its image D. To interpret these observations, and constrain the broad emission line region (BLR) properties, the effect of gravitational microlensing on quasar broad emission line profiles and their underlying continuum has been simulated considering representative BLR models and microlensing magnification maps. The amplification and distortion of the H$α$ line profile, characterized by a set of four indices, can be reproduced by the simulations.…
We characterise ionised gas outflows using a large sample of ~330 high-luminosity (45.5 < log(L_bol/erg s^-1) < 49.0), high-redshift (1.5 < z < 4.0) quasars via their [OIII]4960,5008 emission. The median velocity width of the [OIII] emission line is 1540 kms^-1, increasing with increasing quasar luminosity. Broad, blue-shifted wings are seen in the [OIII] profiles of 42 per cent of the sample. Rest-frame ultraviolet spectra with well-characterised CIV 1550 emission line properties are available for more than 210 quasars, allowing an investigation of the relationship between the Broad Line Regi…
Quasar luminosity functions are a fundamental probe of the growth and evolution of supermassive black holes. Measuring the intrinsic luminosity function is difficult in practice, due to a multitude of observational and systematic effects. As sample sizes increase and measurement errors drop, characterizing the systematic effects is becoming more important. It is well known that the continuum emission from the accretion disk of quasars is anisotropic --- in part due to its disk-like structure --- but current luminosity function calculations effectively assume isotropy over the range of unobscur…
Combining large-area optical quasar surveys with the new far-infrared Herschel-ATLAS Data Release 1, we search for an observational signature associated with the minority of quasars possessing bright far-infrared (FIR) luminosities. We find that FIR-bright quasars show broad CIV emission line blueshifts in excess of that expected from the optical luminosity alone, indicating particularly powerful nuclear outflows. The quasars show no signs of having redder optical colours than the general ensemble of optically-selected quasars, ruling out differences in line-of-sight dust within the host galax…
We have employed deep neural network, or deep learning to predict the flux and the shape of the broad Ly$α$ emission lines in the spectra of quasars. We use 17870 high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR > 15) quasar spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 14 (DR14) to train the model and evaluate its performance. The SiIV, CIV, and CIII] broad emission lines are used as the input to the neural network, and the model returns the predicted Ly$α$ emission line as the output. We found that our neural network model predicts quasars continua around the Ly$α$ spectral region with $\sim$…
Using a sample of 30,000 quasars from SDSS-DR7, we explore the range of properties exhibited by high-ionization, broad emission lines, such as CIV 1549. Specifically we investigate the anti-correlation between L_UV and emission line EQW (the Baldwin Effect) and the "blueshifting" of high-ionization emission lines. The blueshift of the CIV emission line is nearly ubiquitous, with a mean shift of 810 km/s for radio-quiet (RQ) quasars and 360 km/s for radio-loud (RL) quasars, and the Baldwin Effect is present in both RQ and RL samples. Composite spectra are constructed as a function of CIV emissi…
We have recently used the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-centimeters (FIRST) survey to show that red quasars have fundamentally different radio properties to typical blue quasars: a significant (factor $\sim3$) enhancement in the radio-detection fraction, which arises from systems around the radio-quiet threshold with compact ($<5''$) radio morphologies. To gain greater insight into these physical differences, here we use the DR14 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and more sensitive, higher resolution radio data from the Very Large Array (VLA) Stripe 82 (S82) and VLA-COSMOS 3 GHz (C3GHz…
We explore the variability of quasars in the MgII and Hbeta broad emission lines and UV/optical continuum emission using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping project (SDSS-RM). This is the largest spectroscopic study of quasar variability to date: our study includes 29 spectroscopic epochs from SDSS-RM over $6$ months, containing 357 quasars with MgII and 41 quasars with Hbeta . On longer timescales, the study is also supplemented with two-epoch data from SDSS-I/II. The SDSS-I/II data include an additional $2854$ quasars with MgII and 572 quasars with Hbeta. The MgII emission lin…
The origin of the radio emission in Radio Quiet (RQ) quasars is not established yet. Important hints can be provided by the spectral slope, and its relation to other emission properties. We compiled the highest resolution 5 and 8.4 GHz VLA observations available of the RQ optically selected PG quasars at z<0.5. We derive the 5-8.4 GHz spectral slope, alpha_R, for 25 of the complete and well studied sample of 71 RQ PG quasars. We find a highly significant correlation of alpha_R with L/L_Edd, where high L/L_Edd (>0.3) quasars have a steep slope (alpha_R<-0.5), indicative of an optically thin syn…
Radio core dominance, the rest-frame ratio of core to lobe luminosity, has been widely used as a measure of Doppler boosting of a quasar's radio jets and hence of the inclination of the central engine's spin axis to the line of sight. However, the use of the radio lobe luminosity in the denominator (essentially to try and factor out the intrinsic power of the central engine) has been criticized and other proxies for the intrinsic engine power have been proposed. These include the optical continuum luminosity, and the luminosity of the narrow-line region. Each is plausible, but so far none has …
We analyze VLT/X-shooter data for 7 quasars, where we study the relationships between their broad absorption line (BAL) and emission line outflows. We find: 1) the luminosity of the [OIII] $λ$5007 emission profile decreases with increasing electron number density (n$_e$) derived from the BAL outflow in the same quasar, 2) the measured velocity widths from the [OIII] emission features and CIV absorption troughs in the same object are similar, and 3) the mean radial velocity derived from the BAL outflow is moderately larger than the one from the [OIII] emission outflow. These findings can be exp…
Most active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are radio-quiet, and the origin of their radio emission is not well-understood. One hypothesis is that this radio emission is a by-product of quasar-driven winds. In this paper, we present the radio properties of 108 extremely red quasars (ERQs) at $z=2-4$. ERQs are among the most luminous quasars ($L_{bol} \sim 10^{47-48}$ erg/s) in the Universe, with signatures of extreme ($\gg 1000$ km/s) outflows in their [OIII]$λ$5007 Å emission, making them the best subjects to seek the connection between radio and outflow activity. All ERQs but one are unresolved in th…

Gravitational microlensing is a powerful tool allowing one to probe the structure of quasars on sub-parsec scale. We report recent results, focusing on the broad absorption and emission line regions. In particular microlensing reveals the intrinsic absorption hidden in the P Cygni-type line profiles observed in the broad absorption line quasar H1413+117, as well as the existence of an extended continuum source. In addition, polarization microlensing provides constraints on the scattering region. In the quasar Q2237+030, microlensing differently distorts the H$α$ and CIV broad emission line pro…
Black-hole masses are crucial to understanding the physics of the connection between quasars and their host galaxies and measuring cosmic black hole-growth. At high redshift, z > 2.1, black hole masses are normally derived using the velocity-width of the CIV broad emission line, based on the assumption that the observed velocity-widths arise from virial-induced motions. In many quasars, the CIV-emission line exhibits significant blue asymmetries (`blueshifts') with the line centroid displaced by up to thousands of km/s to the blue. These blueshifts almost certainly signal the presence of stron…
The interactions between radio jets and the interstellar medium play a defining role for the co-evolution of central supermassive black holes and their host galaxies, but observational constraints on these feedback processes are still very limited at redshifts $z > 2$. We investigate the radio-loud quasar PSO J352.4034-15.3373 at $z \sim 6$ at the edge of the Epoch of Reionization. This quasar is among the most powerful radio emitters and the first one with direct evidence of extended radio jets ($\sim$1.6 kpc) at these high redshifts. We analyze NOEMA and ALMA millimeter data targeting the CO…
The radio emission in radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) has been a long mystery and its physical origin remains unclear. In a previous work we find UV/optical more variable quasars have stronger X-ray emission, indicating a link between disc turbulence and X-ray corona heating. In this work, for the first time, we investigate the relation between UV/optical variability and the radio emission in RQQs selected from SDSS stripe 82 and FIRST radio survey. We median stack the FIRST images and detect clear signals from RQQs in the co-added images of individually radio non-detected sources. Controlling the …
The UV/optical variation, likely driven by accretion disc turbulence, is a defining characteristic of type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and quasars. In this work we investigate an interesting consequence of such turbulence using quasars in SDSS Stripe 82 for which the measurements of the UV/optical variability amplitude are available from $\sim$ 10 years long light curves. We discover positive correlations between UV/optical variability amplitude $σ_{rms}$ and equivalent widths of CIV, Mg II and [OIII]5007 emission lines. Such correlations remain statistically robust through partial correla…
Enormous Ly$α$ nebulae (ELANe) around quasars have provided unique insights into the formation of massive galaxies and their associations with super-massive black holes since their discovery. However, their detection remains highly limited. This paper introduces a systematic search for extended Ly$α$ emission around 8683 quasars at $z=$2.34-3.00 using a simple but very effective broad-band $gri$ selection based on the Third Public Data Release of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program. Although the broad-band selection detects only bright Ly$α$ emission ($\gtrsim1\times10^{-17}$ erg~s$…
We present an observational study of 22 broad absorption line quasars (BAL QSOs) at $3\lesssim z \lesssim5$ based on optical/near-IR spectroscopy, aiming to investigate quasar winds and their effects. The near-IR spectroscopy covers the \hb\ and/or \mgii\ broad emission lines (BELs) for these quasars, allowing us to estimate their central black hole (BH) masses in a robust way. We found that our BAL QSOs on average do not have a higher Eddington ratio than that from non-BAL QSOs matched in redshift and/or luminosity. In a subset consisting of seven strong BAL QSOs possessing sub-relativistic B…
We present results from a combined radio polarization and emission line study of five type 2 quasars at $z<0.2$ with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) B-array at 5 GHz and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) [O III] observations. These five sources are known to exhibit close association between radio structures and ionized gas morphology and kinematics. Four sources (J0945+1737, J1000+1242, J1356+1026 and J1430+1339) show polarization in the current data. J1010+1413 is the unpolarized source in our sample. We detect $0.5-1\%$ fractional polarization in the radio cores and a high fractional po…
A recently-discovered class of outflows, extremely high-velocity outflows (EHVOs), may be key to understanding feedback processes as it is likely the most powerful in terms of mass-energy. These EHVOs have been observed at redshifts 1.052 < z_em < 7.641, but the potential connection with outflows in emission had not been studied. We find that EHVOs, albeit their small numbers at the moment, appear to show distinct CIV and HeII properties. In particular, EHVOs are more predominant in quasars with large blueshifts of the CIV emission line, suggesting a connection between emission and absorption …
Roughly 10% of quasars are "radio-loud", producing copious radio emission in large jets. The origin of the low-level radio emission seen from the remaining 90% of quasars is unclear. Observing a sample of eight radio-quiet quasars with the Very Long Baseline Array, we discovered that their radio properties depend strongly on their Eddington ratio (r_Edd=L_AGN/L_Edd). At lower Eddington ratios (r_Edd < 0.3), the total radio emission of the AGN predominately originates from an extremely compact region, possibly as small as the accretion disk. At higher Eddington ratios (r_Edd > 0.3), the relativ…
We present results from 1.4 and 5 GHz observations at matched resolution with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) of 11 powerful 3C FR II quasars. We examine the 11 quasars along with a sample of 13 narrow-line FR II radio galaxies and find that radio-loud unification largely holds but environmental effects cannot be ignored. The radio core prominence, largest linear size, and axial ratio parameter values indicate that quasars are at relatively smaller angles compared to the radio galaxies and thus probe orientation. Lack of correlation between statistical orientation indicators such as …
We report the detection of extended Lyman-$α$ emission from the host galaxy of SDSS~J2222+2745, a strongly lensed quasar at $z = 2.8$. Spectroscopic follow-up clearly reveals extended Lyman-$α$ in emission between two images of the central active galactic nucleus (AGN). We reconstruct the lensed quasar host galaxy in the source plane by applying a strong lens model to HST imaging, and resolve spatial scales as small as $\sim$200 parsecs. In the source plane we recover the host galaxy morphology to within a few hundred parsecs of the central AGN, and map the extended Lyman-$α$ emission to its p…
We conduct kinematic analysis of the SDSS spectra of 568 obscured luminous quasars, with the emphasis on the kinematic structure of the [OIII]5007 emission line. [OIII] emission tends to show blueshifts and blue excess, which indicates that at least part of the narrow-line gas is undergoing an organized outflow. The velocity width containing 90% of line power ranges from 370 to 4780 km/sec, suggesting outflow velocities up to 2000 km/sec. The velocity width of the [OIII] emission is positively correlated with the radio luminosity among the radio-quiet quasars. We propose that radio emission in…
We investigate the large-scale structure of Lyman-alpha emission intensity in the Universe at redshifts z=2-3.5 using cross-correlation techniques. Our Lya emission samples are spectra of BOSS Luminous Red Galaxies from Data Release 12 with the best fit model galaxies subtracted. We cross-correlate the residual flux in these spectra with BOSS quasars, and detect a positive signal on scales 1-15 Mpc/h. We identify and remove a source of contamination not previously accounted for, due to the effects of quasar clustering on cross-fibre light. Corrected, our quasar-Lya emission cross-correlation i…
