In this study, we investigated the orientation model of Broad Absorption Line (BAL) quasars using a sample of sources that are common in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release (DR)-16 quasar catalog and Very Large Array (VLA)-Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty Centimeters (FIRST) survey. Using the radio cut-out images from the FIRST survey, we first designed a deep learning model using convolutional neural networks (CNN) to classify the quasar radio morphologies into the core-only, young jet, single lobe, or triples. These radio morphologies are further sub-classified into core-dominated and lobe-dominated sources. The CNN models can classify the sources with a high precision of >98% for all the morphological sub-classes. The average BAL fraction in the resolved core, core-dominated, and lobe-dominated quasars are consistent with the BAL fraction inferred from radio and infra-red surveys. We also present the distribution of BAL quasars as a function of quasar orientation by using the radio core-dominance as an orientation indicator. A similar analysis is performed for HiBALs, LoBALs, and FeLoBALs. All the radio morphological sub-classes and BAL sub-classes show an increase in BAL fraction at high orientation angles of the jets with respect to the line of sight. Our analysis suggests that BAL quasars are more likely to be found in viewing angles close to the equatorial plane of the quasar. However, a pure orientation model is inadequate, and a combination of orientation and evolution is probably the best way to explain the complete BAL phenomena.
Randomly oriented flattened spheroids have been used to describe a broad range of astrophysical phenomena. Here we use this geometric approach to derive equations representing lines of sight through quasar absorption clouds to constrain cloud sizes.
We study large-scale UV background inhomogeneity in three-dimensions associated with the observed quasar populations at high redshift. We do this by measuring metal absorption through quasar absorption spectrum stacking as a function distance to closest quasar in SDSS-IV/eBOSS on 10s of comoving megaparsec scales. We study both intergalactic medium absorbers and mixed circumgalactic medium absorbers and probe absorption in O VI, C IV, and Si IV, and Si III. Overall stronger high ionization species absorption is seen closer to quasars at $2.4<z<3.1$. O VI absorption shows a particularly strong …
We study the dramatic decrease in iron absorption strength in the iron low-ionization broad absorption line quasar SDSS J084133.15+200525.8. We report on the continued weakening of absorption in the prototype of this class of variable broad absorption line quasar, FBQS J140806.2+305448. We also report a third example of this class, SDSS J123103.70+392903.6; unlike the other two examples, it has undergone an increase in observed continuum brightness (at 3000~Å rest-frame) as well as a decrease in iron absorption strength. These changes could be caused by absorber transverse motion or by ionizat…
Neutral Helium multiplets, HeI*3189,3889,10830 are very useful diagnostics to the geometry and physical conditions of the absorbing gas in quasars. So far only a handful of HeI* detections have been reported. Using a newly developed method, we detected HeI*3889 absorption line in 101 sources of a well-defined sample of 285 MgII BAL quasars selected from the SDSS DR5. This has increased the number of HeI* BAL quasars by more than one order of magnitude. We further detected HeI*3189 in 50% (52/101) quasars in the sample. The detection fraction of HeI* BALs in MgII BAL quasars is about 35% as a w…
Enhanced ionizing radiation in close proximity to redshift $z\gtrsim 6$ quasars creates short windows of intergalactic Ly$α$ transmission blueward of the quasar Ly$α$ emission lines. The majority of these Ly$α$ near-zones are consistent with quasars that have optically/UV bright lifetimes of $t_{\rm Q}\sim 10^{5}-10^{7}\rm\,yr$. However, lifetimes as short as $t_{\rm Q}\lesssim 10^{4}\rm\,yr$ appear to be required by the smallest Ly$α$ near-zones. These short lifetimes present an apparent challenge for the growth of $\sim 10^{9}\rm\,M_{\odot}$ black holes at $z\gtrsim 6$. Accretion over longer…
We present high-resolution observations, using both the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 1.7-GHz, and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 5 and 8.4-GHz to image radio structures of 14 compact sources classified as broad absorption line (BAL) quasars based on the absorption index (AI). All source but one were resolved, with the majority showing core-jet morphology typical for radio-loud quasars. We discuss in details the most interesting cases. The high radio luminosities and small linear sizes of the observed objects indicate they are strong young AGNs. Nevertheless, the distribution of the r…
We report the discovery of excess broad band absorption near 2250 A (EBBA) in the spectra of seven broad absorption line (BAL) quasars. By comparing with the statistical results from the control quasar sample, the significance for the detections are all above the > 4σ level, with five above > 5σ. The detections have also been verified by several other independent methods. The EBBAs present broader and weaker bumps at smaller wavenumbers than the Milky Way, and similar to the Large Magellanic Cloud. The EBBA bump may be related to the 2175 A bump seen in the Local Group and may be a counterpart…
We investigate the properties of the circumgalactic gas in the halo of quasar host galaxies from CIV absorption line systems. Optical spectroscopy of closely aligned pairs of quasars (projected distance \leq 200 kpc) obtained at the Gran Telescopio Canarias is used to investigate the distribution of the absorbing gas for a sample of 18 quasars at z \sim 2. We found that the detected absorption systems of EW \geq 0.3Ang associated with the foreground QSO are revealed up to 200 kpc from the center of the host galaxy. The structure of the absorbing gas is rather patchy with a covering fraction of…
Broad absorption lines seen in some quasars prove the existence of ionized plasma outflows from the accretion disk. Outflows together with powerful jets are important feedback processes. Understanding physics behind BAL outflows might be a key to comprehend Galaxy Evolution as a whole. First radio-loud BAL quasar was discovered in 1997 and this discovery has opened new possibilities for studies of the BAL phenomena, this time on the basis of radio emission. However, information about the radio structures, orientation and age of BAL quasars is still very limited due to weak radio emission and s…
A key to understanding quasar unification paradigms is the emission properties of broad absorption line quasars (BALQs). The fact that only a small fraction of quasar spectra exhibit deep absorption troughs blueward of the broad permitted emission lines provides a crucial clue to the structure of quasar emitting regions. To learn whether it is possible to discriminate between the BALQ and non-BALQ populations given the observed spectral properties of a quasar, we employ two approaches: one based on statistical methods and the other supervised machine learning classification, applied to quasar …
We present the results of a 21-cm HI survey of 27 local massive gas-rich late-stage mergers and merger remnants with the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT). These remnants were selected from the Quasar/ULIRG Evolution Study (QUEST) sample of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs; L$_{8-1000 μm} > 10^{12}$ L$_\odot$) and quasars; our targets are all bolometrically dominated by active galactic nuclei (AGN) and sample the later phases of the proposed ULIRG-to-quasar evolutionary sequence. We find the prevalence of HI absorption (emission) to be 100% (29%) in ULIRGs with HI detections, 10…
Quasars that exhibit blue-shifted, broad absorption lines (BAL QSOs) are an important probe of black hole feedback on galaxy evolution. Yet the presence of BALs is also a complication for large, spectroscopic surveys that use quasars as cosmological probes because the BAL features can affect redshift measurements and contaminate information about the matter distribution in the Lyman-$α$ forest. We present a new BAL QSO catalog for quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 14 (DR14). As the SDSS DR14 quasar catalog has over 500,000 quasars, we have developed an automated BAL c…
We present CO(2-1) and adjacent continuum observations of 7 nearby radio-quiet type-2 quasars (QSO2s) obtained with ALMA at ~0.2" resolution (370 pc at z~0.1). The CO morphologies are diverse, including disks and interacting systems. Two of the QSO2s are red early-type galaxies with no CO(2-1) detected. In the interacting galaxies, the central kpc contains 18-25% of the total cold molecular gas, whereas in the spirals it is only 5-12%. J1010+0612 and J1430+1339 show double-peaked CO morphologies which do not have optical counterparts. Based on our analysis of the ionized and molecular kinemati…
We present the column densities of heavy-elements and dust depletion studies in twostrong Mg~II absorption systems at $z\sim1.4$ displaying the 2175-Å dust extinction feature. Column densities are measured from low-ionization absorption lines using Apparent Optical Depth Method on the Keck/ESI spectra. We find the dust depletion patterns resemble to that of cold diffuse clouds in the Milky Way (MW). The values, [Fe/Zn]$\approx -1.5$ and [Si/Zn]$<-0.67$, are among the highest dust depletion measured for quasar absorption line systems. In another 2175-Å absorber at $z$=1.64 toward the quasar SDS…
We present the catalogue of the Mg II absorption systems detected at a high significance level using an automated search algorithm in the spectra of quasars from the twelfth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. A total of 266,433 background quasars were searched for the presence of absorption systems in their spectra. The continuum modelling for the quasar spectra was performed using a mean filter. A pseudo-continuum derived using a median filter was used to trace the emission lines. The absorption system catalogue contains 39,694 Mg II systems detected at a 6.0, 3.0$σ$ level respecti…
Broad absorption lines (BALs) in quasar spectra identify high velocity outflows that might exist in all quasars and could play a major role in feedback to galaxy evolution. The viability of BAL outflows as a feedback mechanism depends on their kinetic energies, as derived from the outflow velocities, column densities, and distances from the central quasar. We estimate these quantities for the quasar, Q1413+1143 (redshift $z_e = 2.56$), aided by the first detection of PV $λλ$1118,1128 BAL variability in a quasar. In particular, PV absorption at velocities where the CIV trough does not reach zer…
In this paper, we present an intercomparison study of two quasars, SDSS J145618.32+340037.2 and SDSS J215331.50-025514.1, which have proximate damped Lya systems (PDLAs) with residual flux upon the Lya absorption trough. Though they both have residual flux as luminous as $10^{43}erg/s$, their PDLAs are quite different in, e.g., HI column density, metal line absorption strength, high-ionization absorption lines as well as residual flux strength. For J1456, the HI column density is $20.6\pm0.2$, with za=2.3138, nearly identical to the quasar redshift (z=2.3142) determined from the [OIII] emissio…
Broad absorption line (BAL) quasars have been studied for over thirty years. Yet it is still unclear why and when we observe broad absorption lines in quasars. Is this phenomenon caused by geometry or is it connected with the evolution process? Variability of the BAL quasars, if present, can give us information about their orientation, namely it can indicate whether they are oriented more pole-on. Using the Torun 32-metre dish equipped with the One Centimetre Receiver Array (OCRA) we have started a monitoring campaign of a sample of compact radio-loud BAL quasars. This 30 GHz variability monit…
We review the main results from axisymmetric, time-dependent hydrodynamical simulations of radiation driven disk winds in AGN. We illustrate the capability of such simulations to provide useful insights into the three domains of observational astronomy: spectroscopy, time-variability, and imaging. Specifically, the synthetic line profiles predicted by the simulations resemble the broad absorption lines observed in quasars. The intrinsically time dependent nature of radiation driven disk winds that have been predicted by the simulations can be supported by a growing number of the observed drama…
Photoionization modeling of certain low-ionization broad absorption lines in quasars implies very compact (Delta R~0.01 pc), galaxy-scale (R kpc) absorbers blueshifted by several 1000 km s^-1. While these are likely signatures of quasar outflows, the lifetimes of such compact absorbers are too short for them to be direct ejecta from a nuclear wind. Instead, I argue that the absorbing clouds must be transient and created in situ. Following arguments detailed by Faucher-Giguere, Quataert, & Murray (2011), I show that a model in which the cool absorbers form in radiative shocks arising when a qua…
We have monitored 12 intrinsic narrow absorption lines (NALs) in five quasars and seven mini-broad absorption lines (mini-BALs) in six quasars for a period of 4-12 years (1-3.5 years in the quasar rest-frame). We present the observational data and the conclusions that follow immediately from them, as a prelude to a more detailed analysis. We found clear variability in the equivalent widths (EWs) of the mini-BAL systems but no easily discernible changes in their profiles. We did not detect any variability in the NAL systems nor in narrow components that are often located at the center of mini-B…
As the second work in a series of papers aiming to detect absorption systems in the quasar spectra of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, we continue the analysis of Paper I by expanding the quasar sample to those quasars with zem>2.4. This yields a sample of 21,963 appropriate quasars to search for narrow C IV absorptions with Wr>=0.2A for both lines. There are 9708 quasars with at least one appropriate absorption system imprinted on their spectra. From these spectra, we detect 13,919 narrow Civabsorption systems whose absorption redshifts cover a range of zabs=1.8784 - 4.3704. In th…
Determining the distance of quasar absorption outflows from the central source (R) and their kinetic luminosity are crucial for understanding their contribution to active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback. Here we summarize the results for a sample of nine luminous quasars that were observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. We find that the outflows in more than half of the objects are powerful enough to be the main agents for AGN feedback, and that most outflows are found at R>100 pc. The sample is representative of the quasar absorption outflow population as a whole and is unbiased towards spe…
We examine the kinematics of the gas in the environments of galaxies hosting quasars at $z\sim2$. We employ 148 projected quasar pairs to study the circumgalactic gas of the foreground quasars in absorption. The sample selects foreground quasars with precise redshift measurements, using emission-lines with precision $\lesssim300\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$ and average offsets from the systemic redshift $\lesssim|100\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}|$. We stack the background quasar spectra at the foreground quasar's systemic redshift to study the mean absorption in \ion{C}{2}, \ion{C}{4}, and \ion{Mg}{2}. We find tha…
This paper statistically investigates the properties of C IV and Mg II narrow absorption lines (NALs) to look for velocity cuts that can well constrain quasar-associated NALs. The coverage fraction (f_c) is defined as the ratio between the number of quasars exhibiting at least one detected absorber and the total number of quasars that can be used to detect absorptions with given criteria. We find that, for both C IV and Mg II absorbers, both the number density of absorbers in given velocity intervals (dn/dβ) and the f_c show very significant excess at the low-velocity offset from the quasars, …
Broad absorption lines (BALs) found in a significant fraction of quasar spectra identify high-velocity outflows that might be present in all quasars and could be a major factor in feedback to galaxy evolution. Understanding the nature of these flows requires further constraints on their physical properties, including their column densities, for which well-studied BALs, such as CIV 1548,1551, typically provide only a lower limit because of saturation effects. Low-abundance lines, such as PV 1118,1128, indicate large column densities, implying outflows more powerful than measurements of CIV alon…

We aim to find out the reason why there exists an anisotropic HI absorption around quasars; i.e., the environments around quasars are highly biased toward producing strong HI absorption in transverse direction while there exists a significant deficit of HI absorption within a few Mpc of quasars along line-of-sight. The most plausible explanation for this opposite trend is that the transverse direction is shadowed from the quasar UV radiation due to dust torus. However, a critical weakness of this idea is that we have no information on inclination angle of our sightline relative to the torus. I…
We investigate the connection between the intrinsic C IV absorption line variability and the continuum flux changes of broad absorption line (BAL) quasars using a sample of 78 sources in the Stripe 82 region. The absorption trough variability parameters are measured using the archival multi-epoch spectroscopic data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and the continuum flux variability parameters are estimated from the photometric light curves obtained by the SDSS and the Catalina Real-Time Survey (CRTS) surveys. We find evidence for weak correlations (ρ~ 0.3) between the intrinsic C IV a…
We present results from our search for HI 21-cm and OH 18-cm absorption at z~1-1.4 towards red quasars showing strong MgII absorption using uGMRT. The quasars J1501+1822 and J1521+5508 show multiple strong associated MgII absorption at z~1.1 and signature of reddening in their optical spectra. We report the detection of HI 21-cm absorption towards J1521+5508 at the systemic redshift of the quasar, with N(HI) =(1.2 +/- 0.2) x 10^{20} cm^{-2} for spin temperature of 100 K and unit covering factor. The HI 21-cm absorption is offset from the blueshifted strong MgII absorbers by >~1500 km/s. We do …
The early stage of massive galaxy evolution often involves outflows driven by a starburst or a central quasar plus cold mode accretion (infall), which adds to the mass build-up in the galaxies. To study the nature of these infall and outflows in the quasar environments, we have examined the correlation of narrow absorption lines (NALs) at positive and negative velocity shifts to other quasar properties, such as their broad absorption-line (BAL) outflows and radio-loudness, using spectral data from SDSS-BOSS DR12. Our results show that the incidence of associated absorption lines (AALs) and out…
In this paper, we extend our works of Papers I and II, which are assigned to systematically survey \CIVab\ narrow absorption lines (NALs) with \zabs$\ll$\zem\ on quasar spectra of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), to collect \CIV\ NALs with \zabs$\approx$\zem\ from blue to red wings of \CIVwave\ emission lines. Together with Papers I and II, we have collected a total number of 41,479 \CIV\ NALs with $1.4544\le$\zabs$\le4.9224$ in surveyed spectral region redward of \lya\ until red wing of \CIVwave\ emission line. We find that the stronger \CIV\ NALs tend to be the more satura…
Broad absorption line (BAL) features in quasar spectra reveal an unambiguous signature of energetic outflows from central supermassive black holes, and thus BAL quasars are prime targets for investigating the potential process of luminous quasar feedback on galaxies. We analyzed the rest-UV spectrum of an "overlapping trough" iron low-ionization broad absorption line quasar (FeLoBAL) SDSS J135246.37+423923.5 using the novel spectral synthesis code SimBAL (Leighly et al. 2018) and discovered an extraordinarily fast and energetic BAL outflow. Our analysis revealed outflow velocities reaching $\s…
The ultraviolet broad absorption lines have been seen in the spectra of quasars at high redshift, and are generally considered to be caused by outflows with velocities from thousands kilometers per second to one tenth of the speed of light. They provide crucial implications for the cosmological structures and physical evolutions related to the feedback of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Recently, through a dedicated program of optically spectroscopic identifications of selected quasar candidates at redshift 5 by using the Lijiang 2.4 m telescope, we discovered two luminous broad absorption line…
We find multiple Mg II absorption systems at redshift z=1.66, 2.069, and 2.097 in the spatially resolved spectra of the quadruply gravitationally lensed quasar H1413+1143 utilizing the Kyoto tridimensional spectrograph II (Kyoto 3DII) spectrograph on board the Subaru telescope. Here we present the first measurement of differences in Mg II absorption strength of the multiple intervening absorbers, which include ones identified as damped Lyman alpha (DLA) absorption systems. Our detection of the significant Mg II absorptions in the spatially resolved spectra reveals the inhomogeneous chemical en…
We report, for the first time, a synchronized velocity shift of Mg II and Al III broad absorption lines (BALs) in quasar SDSS J134444.33+315007.6 (hereafter J1344+3150). We found this quasar from a sample of 134 Mg II BAL quasars with multi-epoch observations. This quasar contains three low-ionization BAL systems, the fastest of which at $\sim$$-17, 000\,\rm km\,s^{-1}$ shows a kinematic shift of $\sim$$-1101\,\rm km\,s^{-1}$ and $\sim$$-1170\,\rm km\,s^{-1}$ in its Mg II and Al III ions, respectively, during a rest-frame time of about 3.21 yr. Meanwhile, this quasar also shows other various v…
Observational evidence revealing the main mechanisms that accelerate quasar outflows has proven difficult to obtain, due to the complexity of the absorption features that this gas produces in the spectra of the emission sources. We build 36 composite outflow spectra, covering a large range of outflow and quasar parameters, by stacking broad ($>450\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$) absorption line systems in the spectra of SDSS-III/BOSS DR12 quasars. The two lines of the atomic doublet of CIV, with a separation of $\approx 497\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$, as well as those of other species appear well resolved in most…
We present the results of a new spectroscopic survey for dusty intervening absorption systems, particularly damped Ly$α$ absorbers (DLAs), towards reddened quasars. The candidate quasars are selected from mid-infrared photometry from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer combined with optical and near-infrared photometry. Out of 1073 candidates, we secure low-resolution spectra for 108 using the Nordic Optical Telescope on La Palma, Spain. Based on the spectra, we are able to classify 100 of the 108 targets as quasars. A large fraction (50 %) is observed to have broad absorption lines (BALs)…
We report a synchronized kinematic shift of CIV and SiIV broad absorption lines (BAL) in a high-ionization, radio-loud, and X-ray bright quasar SDSS-J092345+512710 (at $z_{em} \sim 2.1627$). This quasar shows two broad absorption components (blue component at $v \sim 14,000\ km\ s^{-1}$, and red component at $v \sim 4,000\ km\ s^{-1}$ with respect to the quasars systemic redshift). The absorption profiles of CIV and SiIV BAL of the blue component show decrease in outflow velocity with an average deceleration rate of $-1.62_{-0.05}^{+0.04}\ cm\ s^{-2}$ and $-1.14^{+0.21}_{-0.22}\ cm\ s^{-2}$ ov…
We present the discovery of strong Balmer line absorption in H$α$ to H$γ$ in two luminous low-ionization broad absorption line quasars (LoBAL QSOs) at z~1.5, with black hole masses around $10^{10}$ $M_\odot$ from near-IR spectroscopy. There are only two previously known quasars at z>1 showing Balmer line absorption. SDSS J1019+0225 shows blueshifted absorption by ~1400 km/s with an H$α$ rest-frame equivalent width of 13 Å. In SDSS J0859+4239 we find redshifted absorption by ~500 km/s with an H$α$ rest-frame equivalent width of 7 Å. The redshifted absorption could indicate an inflow of high den…
To better constrain the hypotheses proposed to explain why only a few quasars are radio loud (RL), we compare the characteristics of 1958 nearby $(z\le 0.3)$ SDSS quasars, covered by the FIRST and NVSS radio surveys. Only 22\% are RL with $\log(L_{1.4{\rm GHz}}) \ge 22.5$ W Hz$^{-1}$, the majority being compact (C), weak radio sources (WRS), with $\log(L_{1.4{\rm GHz}}) < 24.5$ W Hz$^{-1}$. 15\% of the RL quasars have extended radio morphologies: 3\% have a core and a jet (J), 2\% have a core with one lobe (L), and 10\% have a core with two lobes (T), the majority being powerful radio sources …
CRTS J084133.15+200525.8 is an optically bright quasar at z=2.345 that has shown extreme spectral variability over the past decade. Photometrically, the source had a visual magnitude of V~17.3 between 2002 and 2008. Then, over the following five years, the source slowly brightened by approximately one magnitude, to V~16.2. Only ~1 in 10,000 quasars show such extreme variability, as quantified by the extreme parameters derived for this quasar assuming a damped random walk model. A combination of archival and newly acquired spectra reveal the source to be an iron low-ionization broad absorption …
Using a sample of $\simeq$144,000 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 14 we investigate the outflow properties, evident both in absorption and emission, of high-ionization Broad Absorption Line (BAL) and non-BAL quasars with redshifts 1.6 $\lesssim z \leq$ 3.5 and luminosities 45.3 $< \log_{10}(L_{bol}) < $ 48.2 erg s$^{-1}$. Key to the investigation is a continuum and emission-line reconstruction scheme, based on mean-field independent component analysis, that allows the kinematic properties of the CIV$λ$1550 emission line to be compared directly for both non-BAL and BAL qu…
Gravitational microlensing is a powerful tool allowing one to probe the structure of quasars on sub-parsec scale. We report recent results, focusing on the broad absorption and emission line regions. In particular microlensing reveals the intrinsic absorption hidden in the P Cygni-type line profiles observed in the broad absorption line quasar H1413+117, as well as the existence of an extended continuum source. In addition, polarization microlensing provides constraints on the scattering region. In the quasar Q2237+030, microlensing differently distorts the H$α$ and CIV broad emission line pro…
We present a preparatory spectroscopic survey to identify radio-bright, high-redshift quasars for the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey (MALS). The candidates have been selected on the basis of a single flux density limit at 1.4 GHz (>200 mJy) together with mid-infrared color criteria from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). Through spectroscopic observations using the Nordic Optical Telescope, we identify 72 quasars out of 99 candidates targeted. We measure the spectroscopic redshifts based on characteristic, broad emission lines present in the spectra. Of these 72 quasars, 64 and 48…
The galactocentric distance of quasar absorption outflows are conventionally determined using absorption troughs from excited states, a method hindered by severely saturated or self-blended absorption troughs. We propose a novel method to estimate the size of a broad absorption line (BAL) region which partly obscures an emission line region by assuming virialized gas in the emission region surrounding a supermassive black hole with known mass. When a spiky Lya1216 line emission is present at the flat bottom of the deep Nv1240 absorption trough, the size of BAL region can be estimated. We have …
We analyze the VLT/UVES spectrum of the quasar SDSS J143907.5-010616.7, retrieved from the UVES Spectral Quasar Absorption Database. We identify two outflow systems in the spectrum: a mini broad absorption line (mini-BAL) system and a narrow absorption line (NAL) system. We measure the ionic column densities of the mini-BAL ($v=-1550$ km s$^{-1}$) outflow, which has excited state absorption troughs of Fe II. We determine that the electron number density $\log{n_e}=3.4^{+0.1}_{-0.1}$ based on the ratios between the excited and ground state abundances of Fe II, and find the kinetic luminosity of…
We assemble 3524 quasars from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with repeated observations to search for variations of narrow C IV1548,1551 and Mg II2796,2803 absorption doublets in spectral regions shortward of 7000 Ang at the observed frame, which corresponds to time-scales of about 150 ~ 2643 days at quasar rest frame. In these quasar spectra, we detect 3580 C IV absorption systems with z_{abs} = 1.5188 ~ 3.5212, and 1809 Mg II absorption systems with z_{abs} = 0.3948 ~ 1.7167. In term of the absorber velocity (beta) distribution at quasar rest frame, we find a substantial number of C IV abso…
We present a new set of 84 Broad absorption line (BAL) quasars ( 1.7 $<$ \zem $<$ 4.4) exhibiting an appearance of \civ BAL troughs over 0.3$-$4.8 rest-frame years by comparing the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release (SDSSDR)-7, SDSSDR-12, and SDSSDR-14 quasar catalogs. We contrast the nature of BAL variability in this appearing BAL quasar sample with a disappearing BAL quasar sample studied in literature by comparing the quasar's intrinsic, BAL trough, and continuum parameters between the two samples. We find that appearing BAL quasars have relatively higher redshift and smaller probed time…
We have obtained spectropolarimetric observations of the four images of the gravitationally lensed broad absorption line quasar H1413+117. The polarization of the microlensed image D is significantly different both in the continuum and in the broad lines from the polarization of image A which is essentially unaffected by microlensing. The observations suggest that the continuum is scattered off two regions spatially separated and producing roughly perpendicular polarizations. These results are compatible with a model in which the microlensed polarized continuum comes from a compact region loca…
In this paper we present an analysis of absorption line variability in mini-BAL quasar LBQS 1206+1052. The SDSS spectrum demonstrates that the absorption troughs can be divided into two components of blueshift velocities of $\sim$700 km s$^{-1}$ and $\sim$1400 km s$^{-1}$ relative to the quasar rest-frame. The former component shows rare Balmer absorption, which is an indicator of high density absorbing gas, thus the quasar is worth follow-up spectroscopic observations. Our follow-up optical and near-infrared spectra using MMT, YFOSC, TripleSpec and DBSP reveal that the strengths of the absorp…

We present ten metallicity measurements for quasar absorbers near $z=1.2$ that were selected for having unusually significant ZnII absorption in their SDSS spectra. Follow-up UV space spectroscopy of the Ly$α$ region shows that all ten have damped Ly$α$ (DLA) absorption, corresponding to neutral hydrogen column densities in the range $2.4\times 10^{20}$ $\le$ N(HI) $\le$ $2.5\times 10^{21}$ atoms cm$^{-2}$, and indicating that the gas is very optically thick and essentially neutral. The sample is a very small subset of systems compiled by searching the University of Pittsburgh catalog of $\app…
A key assumption in quasar absorption line studies of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) is that each absorption component maps to a spatially isolated "cloud" structure that has single valued properties (e.g. density, temperature, metallicity). We aim to assess and quantify the degree of accuracy underlying this assumption. We used adaptive mesh refinement hydrodynamic cosmological simulations of two $z=1$ dwarf galaxies and generated synthetic quasar absorption-line spectra of their CGM. For the SiII $λ1260$ transition, and the CIV $λ\lambda1548, 1550$ and OVI $λ\lambda1031, 1037$ fine-structur…
There is a large diversity in the C IV broad absorption line (BAL) profile among BAL quasars (BALQs). We quantify this diversity by exploring the distribution of the C IV BAL properties, FWHM, maximum depth of absorption and its velocity shift ($v_{\rm md}$), using the SDSS DR7 quasar catalogue. We find the following: (i) Although the median C IV BAL profile in the quasar rest-frame becomes broader and shallower as the UV continuum slope ($α_{\rm UV}$ at 1700-3000 A) gets bluer, the median individual profile in the absorber rest-frame remains identical, and is narrow (FWHM = 3500 km/s) and dee…
