We study the mod $p^r$ Milnor $K$-groups of $p$-adically complete and $p$-henselian rings, establishing in particular a Nesterenko-Suslin style description in terms of the Milnor range of syntomic cohomology. In the case of smooth schemes over complete discrete valuation rings we prove the mod $p^r$ Gersten conjecture for Milnor $K$-theory locally in the Nisnevich topology. In characteristic $p$ we show that the Bloch-Kato-Gabber theorem remains true for valuation rings, and for regular formal schemes in a pro sense.
We study the Galois symbol map of the Milnor $K$-group attached to elliptic curves over a $p$-adic field. As by-products, we determine the structure of the Chow group for the product of elliptic curves over a $p$-adic field under some assumptions.
We introduce Milnor-Witt $K$-groups of local rings and show that the $n$th Milnor-Witt $K$-group of a local ring $R$ which contains an infinite field of characteristic not $2$ is the pull-back of the $n$th power of the fundamental ideal in the Witt ring of $R$ and the $n$th Milnor $K$-group of $R$ over the $n$th Milnor $K$-group of $R$ modulo $2$. This generalizes the work of Morel-Hopkins on Milnor-Witt $K$-groups of fields.
Consider a complete discrete valuation ring $\mathcal{O}$ with quotient field $F$ and finite residue field. Then the inclusion map $\mathcal{O} \hookrightarrow F$ induces a map $\hat{\mathrm{K}}^\mathrm{M}_*\mathcal{O} \to \hat{\mathrm{K}}^\mathrm{M}_*F$ on improved Milnor K-theory. We show that this map is an isomorphism in degrees bigger or equal to 3. This implies the Gersten conjecture for improved Milnor K-theory. This result is new in the $p$-adic case.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring and $I\subset R$ be a nilpotent ideal such that the quotient $R/I$ splits out of $R$ as a ring. Let $N$ be a natural number such that ${I^N=0}$. We establish a canonical isomorphism between the relative Milnor $K$-group $K^{M}_{n+1}(R,I)$ and the quotient of the relative module of differential forms $Ω^n_{R,I}/d\,Ω^{n-1}_{R,I}$ assuming that $N!$ is invertible in $R$ and that the ring $R$ is weakly $5$-fold stable. The latter means that any $4$-tuple of elements in $R$ can be shifted by an invertible element to become a $4$-tuple of invertible elements.
We build a ring spectrum representing Milnor-Witt motivic cohomology, as well as its étale local version and show how to deduce out of it three other theories: Borel-Moore homology, cohomology with compact support and homology. These theories, as well as the usual cohomology, are defined for singular schemes and satisfy the properties of their motivic analog (and more), up to considering more general twists. In fact, the whole formalism of these four theories can be functorially attached to any ring spectrum, giving finally maps between the Milnor-Witt motivic ones to the classical motivic one…
We prove that the tangent space to the $(n+1)$-th Milnor $K$-group of a ring $R$ is isomorphic to group of $n$-th absolute Kähler differentials of $R$ when the ring $R$ contains $\frac{1}{2}$ and has sufficiently many invertible elements. More precisely, the latter condition is that $R$ is weakly $5$-fold stable in the sense of Morrow.
This is an attempt to extend to algebraic K-theory our approach to group actions in homological algebra that could be called an introduction to $Γ$-algebraic K-theory. For $Γ$-rings the Milnor algebraic K-theory and Swan's algebraic K-functors are introduced and investigated. Particularly the Matsumoto conjecture related to the symbol group, and the Milnor conjectures related to Witt and Chow groups are extended and proven.
The classical theorem of Milnor on pullback rings states that the category of projective modules over a pullback ring is equivalent to a certain category of gluing triples consisting of projective modules. We prove an analogous result on the level of derived categories, where the equivalence has to be replaced by an epivalence.
Let $X$ be an integral affine or projective hypersurface over a field $F$ of characteristic $p>0$, and let $F(X)$ denote its function field. In a recent article, Dolphin and Hoffmann obtained an explicit description of the kernel of the natural restriction homomorphism between the rings of absolute Kähler differentials of $F$ and $F(X)$, respectively. In this note, we examine the possibility of deriving an analogous result for mod-$p$ Milnor $K$-theory using the Bloch-Gabber-Kato theorem.
Goodwillie's rational isomorphism between relative algebraic K-theory and relative cyclic homology, together with the lambda decomposition of cyclic homology, illustrates the close relationships among algebraic K-theory, cyclic homology, and differential forms. In this paper, I prove a Goodwillie-type theorem for relative Milnor $K$-theory, working over a very general class of commutative rings, defined via the stability criterion of Van der Kallen. Early results of Van der Kallen and Bloch are special cases. The result likely generalizes in terms of de Rahm-Witt complexes, by weakening some i…
We establish various properties of the p-adic algebraic K-theory of smooth algebras over perfectoid rings living over perfectoid valuation rings. In particular, the p-adic K-theory of such rings is homotopy invariant, and coincides with the p-adic K-theory of the p-adic generic fibre in high degrees. In the case of smooth algebras over perfectoid valuation rings of mixed characteristic the latter isomorphism holds in all degrees and generalises a result of Nizioł.
We prove homology stability for elementary and special linear groups over rings with many units improving known stability ranges. Our result implies stability for unstable Quillen K-groups and proves a conjecture of Bass. For commutative local rings with infinite residue fields, we show that the obstruction to further stability is given by Milnor-Witt K-theory. As an application we construct Euler classes of projective modules with values in the cohomology of the Milnor Witt K-theory sheaf. For d-dimensional commutative noetherian rings with infinite residue fields we show that the vanishing o…
For any field $F$ (of characteristic not equal to 2), we determine the Zariski spectrum of homogeneous prime ideals in $K^{MW}_*(F)$, the Milnor-Witt $K$-theory ring of $F$. As a corollary, we recover Lorenz and Leicht's classical result on prime ideals in the Witt ring of $F$. Our computation can be seen as a first step in Balmer's program for studying the tensor triangular geometry of the stable motivic homotopy category.
We present a formal scheme based cycle model for the motivic cohomology of the fat points defined by the truncated polynomial rings $k[t]/(t^m)$ with $m \geq 2$, in one variable over a field $k$. We compute their Milnor range cycle class groups when the field has sufficiently many elements. With some aids from rigid analytic geometry and the Gersten conjecture for the Milnor $K$-theory resolved by M. Kerz, we prove that the resulting cycle class groups are isomorphic to the Milnor $K$-groups of the truncated polynomial rings, generalizing a theorem of Nesterenko-Suslin and Totaro.
Let F be a field, let G be its absolute Galois group, and let R(G, k) be the representation ring of G over a suitable field k. In this preprint we construct a ring homomorphism from the mod 2 Milnor K-theory k_*(F) to the graded ring gr R(G, k) associated to Grothendieck's γ-filtration. We study this map in particular cases, as well as a related map involving the W-group of F rather than G. The latter is an isomorphism in all cases considered. Naturally this echoes the Milnor conjecture (now a theorem), which states that k_*(F) is isomorphic to the mod 2 cohomology of the absolute Galois group…
The Milnor conjecture has been a driving force in the theory of quadratic forms over fields, guiding the development of the theory of cohomological invariants, ushering in the theory of motivic cohomology, and touching on questions ranging from sums of squares to the structure of absolute Galois groups. Here, we survey some recent work on generalizations of the Milnor conjecture to the context of schemes (mostly smooth varieties over fields of characteristic not 2). Surprisingly, a version of the Milnor conjecture fails to hold for certain smooth complete p-adic curves with no rational theta c…
We describe the group SK_1(R[G]) for group rings R[G] where G is an arbitrary finite group and where the coefficient ring R is a p-adically complete Noetherian integral domain of characteristic zero which admits a lift of Frobenius and which also satisfies a number of further mild conditions. Our results extend previous work of R. Oliver who obtained such results for the valuation rings of finite extensions of the p-adic field.
We study the K-group K_1 of the group ring of a finite group over a coefficient ring which is p-adically complete and admits a lift of Frobenius. In this paper, we consider the image of K_1 under the determinant map; the central tool is the group logarithm which we can define using the Frobenius lift. Using this we prove a fixed point theorem for the determinantal image of K_1.
We advance the understanding of K-theory of quadratic forms by computing the slices of the motivic spectra representing hermitian K-groups and Witt-groups. By an explicit computation of the slice spectral sequence for higher Witt-theory, we prove Milnor's conjecture relating Galois cohomology to quadratic forms via the filtration of the Witt ring by its fundamental ideal. In a related computation we express hermitian K-groups in terms of motivic cohomology.
Let F be a field of characteristic zero and let f(t,n) be the stabilization homomorphism from the n-th integral homology of SL(t,F) to the n-th homology of SL(t+1,F). We prove the following results: For all n, f(t,n) is an isomorphism if t is at least n+1, and is surjective for t=n, confirming a conjecture of C-H. Sah. Furthermore if n is odd, then f(n,n) is an isomorphism and when n is even the kernel of f(n,n) is the (n+1)st power of the fundamental ideal of the Witt Ring of the field.. If n is even, then the cokernel of f(n-1,n) is naturally isomorphic to the n-th Milnor-Witt K-group of F, …
We prove the "divisible case" of the Milnor-Bloch-Kato conjecture (which is the first step of Voevodsky's proof of this conjecture for arbitrary prime l) in a rather clear and elementary way. Assuming this conjecture, we construct a 6-term exact sequence of Galois cohomology with cyclotomic coefficients for any finite extension of fields whose Galois group has an exact quadruple of permutational representations over it. Examples include cyclic groups, dihedral groups, the biquadratic group Z/2\times Z/2, and the symmetric group S_4. Several exact sequences conjectured by Bloch-Kato, Merkurjev-…
Let $\k$ be a commutative ring, and let $(A,\mfrak{a})$ be an adic ring which is a $\k$-algebra. We study complete and torsion versions of the derived Hochschild homology and cohomology functors of $A$ over $\k$. To do this, we first establish weak proregularity of certain ideals in flat base changes of noetherian rings. Next, we develop a theory of DG-affine formal schemes, extending the Greenlees-May duality and the MGM equivalence to this setting. Finally, we define complete and torsion derived Hochschild homology and cohomology functors in this setting, and show that if $\k$ is noetherian …
This paper has two parts. In the first part we recall the important role that weak proregularity of an ideal in a commutative ring has in derived completion and in adic flatness. We also introduce the new concepts of idealistic and sequential derived completion, and prove a few results about them, including the fact that these two concepts agree iff the ideal is weakly proregular. In the second part we study the local nature of weak proregularity, and its behavior w.r.t. ring quotients. These results allow us to prove that weak proregularity occurs in the context of bounded prisms, in the sens…
For a flat commutative $k$-algebra $A$ such that the enveloping algebra $A\otimes_k A$ is noetherian, given a finitely generated bimodule $M$, we show that the adic completion of the Hochschild cohomology module $HH^n(A/k,M)$ is naturally isomorphic to $HH^n(\widehat{A}/k,\widehat{M})$. To show this, we (1) make a detailed study of derived completion as a functor $D(A) \to D(\widehat{A})$ over a non-noetherian ring $A$; (2) prove a flat base change result for weakly proregular ideals; and (3) Prove that Hochschild cohomology and analytic Hochschild cohomology of complete noetherian local rings…
