We study invertible states of 1d bosonic quantum lattice systems. We show that every invertible 1d state is in a trivial phase: after tensoring with some unentangled ancillas it can be disentangled by a fuzzy analog of a finite-depth quantum circuit. If an invertible state has symmetries, it may be impossible to disentangle it in a way that preserves the symmetries, even after adding unentagled ancillas. We show that in the case of a finite unitary symmetry G the only obstruction is an index valued in degree-2 cohomology of $G$. We show that two invertible $G$-invariant states are in the same phase if and only if their indices coincide.
The quest to realize novel phases of matter with topological order is an important pursuit with implications for strongly correlated physics and quantum information. Utilizing ideas from state-of-the-art coherent control of artificial quantum systems such as superconducting circuits, we present a proposal to realize bosonic fractional quantum Hall physics on small lattices by creating nearly flat topological bands using staggered flux patterns. Fingerprints of fractionalization through charge pumping can be observed with nearly perfect quantization using as few as 24 lattice sites (two photons…
The topological classifications of quadratic bosonic systems according to the symmetries of the dynamic matrices from the equations of motion of closed systems and the effective Hamiltonians from the Lindblad equations of open systems are analyzed. While the non-Hermitian dynamic matrix and effective Hamiltonian both lead to a ten-fold way table, the system-reservoir coupling may cause a system with or without coupling to a reservoir to fall into different classes. A 2D Chern insulator is shown to be insensitive to the different classifications. In contrast, we present a 1D bosonic Su-Schrieff…
We show how a generalized kind of chiral symmetry can be used to construct highly-efficient reservoir engineering protocols for bosonic lattices. These protocols exploit only a single squeezed reservoir coupled to a single lattice site; this is enough to stabilize the entire system in a pure, entangled steady state. Our approach is applicable to lattices in any dimension, and does not rely on translational invariance. We show how the relevant symmetry operation directly determines the real space correlation structure in the steady state, and give several examples that are within reach in sever…
Dissipative quantum dynamics of bosonic atoms in a shallow 1D optical lattice
We reveal the existence of polarizing quantum phases for the enantiomers of cold, interacting chiral molecules in an optical helicity lattice by means of an extended Bose-Hubbard model. These recently proposed lattices have sites with alternating helicity which exert a discriminatory force on chiral molecules with different handedness. In our study of the phase diagram we find that a strong dipolar repulsion between molecules results in the separation of left and right enantiomers.
Anyons with arbitrary exchange phases exist on 1D lattices in ultracold gases. Yet, known continuum theories in 1D do not match. We derive the continuum limit of 1D lattice anyons via interacting bosons. The theory maintains the exchange phase periodicity fully analogous to 2D anyons. This provides a mapping between experiments, lattice anyons, and continuum theories, including Kundu anyons with a natural regularization as a special case. We numerically estimate the Luttinger parameter as a function of the exchange angle to characterize long-range signatures of the theory and predict different…
We propose a scheme to realize bosonic fractional quantum Hall conductance in shaken honeycomb optical lattices. This scheme does not require a very flat band, and the necessary long-range interaction relies on s-wave scattering, which is common in many ultracold-atom experiments. By filling the lattice at 1/4 with identical bosons under Feshbach resonance, two degenerate many-body ground states share one Chern number of 1 and correspond exactly to the fractional quantum Hall conductance of 1/2. Meanwhile, we prove that the fractional quantum Hall state can be prepared by adiabatically turning…
Optical lattice clocks with uncertainty and instability in the $10^{-17}$-range and below have so far been demonstrated exclusively using fermions. Here, we demonstrate a bosonic optical lattice clock with $3\times 10^{-18}$ instability and $2.0\times 10^{-17}$ accuracy, both values improving on previous work by a factor 30. This was enabled by probing the clock transition with an ultra-long interrogation time of 4 s, using the long coherence time provided by a cryogenic silicon resonator, by careful stabilization of relevant operating parameters, and by operating at low atom density. This wor…
We present an exact solution in arbitrary dimensions for the steady states of a class of quantum driven-dissipative bosonic models, where a set of modes is subject to arbitrary two-photon driving, single-photon loss and a global Hubbard (or Kerr)-like interaction. Our solutions reveal a wealth of striking phenomena, including the emergence of dissipative phase transitions, nontrivial mode competition physics and symmetry breaking, and the stabilization of many-body $SU(1,1)$ pair coherent states. Our exact solutions enable the description of spatial correlations, and are fully valid in regimes…
In this work we propose two protocols to make an effective gauge potential for microwave photons in circuit QED. The schemes consist of coupled transmons whose flux are harmonically modulated in time. We investigate the effect of various types of capacitive and inductive couplings, and the role of the fixed phase offset of each site on the complex coupling rate between coupled qubits. These configurations can be directly realised in a superconducting circuit and is easily extendable to a scalable lattice. Due to the intrinsic non-linearity of the transmon qubits such lattices would be an ideal…
We observe the dissipative dynamics of a dense, strongly interacting gas of bosonic atom pairs in an optical lattice, controlling the strength of the two-body interactions over a wide parameter regime. We study how three-body losses contribute to the lattice dynamics, addressing a number of open questions related to the effects of strong dissipation in a many-body system, including the relationship to the continuous quantum Zeno effect. We observe rapid break-up of bound pairs for weak interactions, and for stronger interactions we see doublon decay rates that are asymmetric when changing from…
Beyond mean-field study of a binary bosonic mixture in a state-dependent honeycomb lattice
We study the sampling complexity of a probability distribution associated with an ensemble ofidentical noninteracting bosons undergoing a quantum random walk on a one-dimensional lattice. With uniform nearest-neighbor hopping we show that one can efficiently sample the distribution fortimes logarithmic in the size of the system, while for longer times there is no known efficient samplingalgorithm. With time-dependent hopping and optimal control, we design the time evolution toapproximate an arbitrary Haar-random unitary map analogous to that designed for photons in alinear optical network. This…
We demonstrate a single-site and single-atom-resolved fluorescence imaging of a bosonic Mott insulator of $^7$Li atoms in an optical lattice. The fluorescence images are obtained by implementing Raman sideband cooling on a deep two-dimensional square lattice, where we collect scattered photons with a high numerical aperture objective lens. The square lattice is created by a folded retro-reflected beam configuration that can reach 2.5~mK lattice depth from a single laser source. The lattice beam is elliptically focused to have a large area with deep potential. On average 4,000 photons are colle…
The emergence of Hofstadter butterflies for bosons in synthetic-gauge-field antiferromagnetic patterns is theoretically studied. We report on a specific tight-binding model of artificial antiferromagnetic structures incorporating both nearest and next-to-nearest neighbour tunnelings and allowing for the formation of the fractal spectra even with the vanishing gauge field flux through the lattice. The model is applied to square and honeycomb lattices. Possible experimental realization is suggested for the lattices of microring resonators connected by waveguides. Finally, the structure of the bu…
There has been a growing interest in realizing quantum simulators for physical systems where perturbative methods are ineffective. The scalability and flexibility of circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) make it a promising platform to implement various types of simulators, including lattice models of strongly-coupled field theories. Here, we use a multimode superconducting parametric cavity as a hardware-efficient analog quantum simulator, realizing a lattice in synthetic dimensions with complex hopping interactions. The coupling graph, \textit{i.e.} the realized model, can be programmed \te…
