We study dynamics of clustering in systems containing active particles that are immersed in an explicit solvent. For this purpose we have adopted a hybrid simulation method, consisting of molecular dynamics and multi-particle collision dynamics. In our model, overlap-avoiding passive interaction of an active particle with another active particle or a solvent particle has been taken care of via variants of Lennard-Jones potential. Dynamic interaction among the active particles has been incorporated via the Vicsek-like self-propulsion that facilitates clustering. We quantify the effects of activity and importance of hydrodynamics on the dynamics of clustering via variations of relevant system parameters. We work with low overall density of active particles. For this the morphology consists of disconnected clusters, the mechanism of growth switching among particle diffusion, diffusive coalescence and ballistic aggregation, depending upon the presence or absence of active and hydrodynamic interactions. Corresponding growth laws have been quantified and discussed in the background of appropriate theoretical pictures. Our results suggest that multi-particle collision dynamics is an effective method for investigation of hydrodynamic phenomena even in active matter systems.
A mixture of solvent particles with short-range, directional interactions and solute particles with short-range, isotropic interactions that can bond multiple times is of fundamental interest in understanding liquids and colloidal mixtures. Because of multi-body correlations predicting the structure and thermodynamics of such systems remains a challenge. Earlier Marshall and Chapman developed a theory wherein association effects due to interactions multiply the partition function for clustering of particles in a reference hard-sphere system. The multi-body effects are incorporated in the clust…
We consider a system of spherical particles interacting by means of a pair potential equal to a finite constant for interparticle distances smaller than the sphere diameter and zero outside. The model may be a prototype for the interaction between micelles in a solvent [C. Marquest and T. A. Witten, J. Phys. France 50, 1267 (1989)]. The phase diagram of these penetrable spheres is investigated using a combination of cell- and density functional theory for the solid phase together with simulations for the fluid phase. The system displays unusual phase behavior due to the fact that, in the solid…
The viscosity enhancement of a solvent produced by the addition of thickening branched polymers is predicted as a function of polymer concentration, branch length and persistence length, and strength of the covalent bonding interactions. Non equilibrium, stationary state Poiseuille numerical simulations are performed using the dissipative particle dynamics model to obtain the viscosity of the fluid. It is found that the clustering of the polymers into aggregates raises the viscosity and that it is more strongly affected by the strength of the bonding interactions. General scaling relationships…
Fabrication of highly ordered and dense nanofibers assemblies is of key importance in designing high-performance and multi-functional materials. In this work, we design an experimental approach in silico, combining shear flow and solvent evaporation to establish nanofiber alignment and densification of the assemblies. We demonstrate the feasibility of this approach by performing dissipative particle dynamics simulations, where the hydrodynamic and thermal fluctuation effects are fully modeled. We find that the microstructural order of assembled nanofibers can be established within a specific r…

The spectroscopy and structural dynamics of a deep eutectic mixture (KSCN/acetamide) with varying water content is investigated from 2D IR (with the C-N stretch vibration of the SCN$^-$ anions as the reporter) and THz spectroscopy. Molecular dynamics simulations correctly describe the non-trivial dependence of both spectroscopic signatures depending on water content. For the 2D IR spectra, the MD simulations relate the steep increase in the cross relaxation rate at high water content to parallel alignment of packed SCN$^-$ anions. Conversely, the non-linear increase of the THz absorption with …
The role of solvent quality in determining the universal material properties of dilute polymer solutions undergoing steady simple shear flow is examined. A bead-spring chain representation of the polymer molecule is used, and the influence of solvent molecules on polymer conformations is modelled by a narrow Gaussian excluded volume potential that acts pair-wise between the beads of the chain. Brownian dynamics simulations data, acquired for chains of finite length, and extrapolated to the limit of infinite chain length, are shown to be model independent. This feature of the narrow Gaussian po…
Recently, it has been discovered that systems of Active Brownian particles (APB) at high density organise their velocities into coherent domains showing large spatial structures in the velocity field. Such a collective behavior occurs spontaneously, i.e. is not caused by any specific interparticle force favoring the alignment of the velocities. This phenomenon was investigated in the absence of thermal noise and in the overdamped regime where inertial forces could be neglected. In this work, we demonstrate through numerical simulations and theoretical analysis that the velocity alignment is a …
We present the first nearly atomistic molecular dynamics study of nanorod-nanorod association in explicit solvent, showing that inter-rod forces can be dominated by microscopic factors absent in common continuum descriptions. Specifically, we find that alkane ligands on faceted CdS nanorods in n-hexane undergo a temperature-dependent order-disorder transition akin to that of self-assembled monolayers on macroscopic substrates. This collective ligand alignment organizes nearby solvent molecules, strongly influencing the statistics of rod-rod separation. The strong temperature-dependence of this…
We present a continuum theory of self-propelled particles, without alignment interactions, in a momentum-conserving solvent. To address phase separation we introduce a scalar concentration field $ϕ$ with advective-diffusive dynamics. Activity creates a contribution $Σ_{ij}=-ζ((\partial_iϕ)(\partial_jϕ)-(\nablaϕ)^{2}δ_{ij}/d)$ to the deviatoric stress, where $ζ$ is odd under time reversal and $d$ is the number of spatial dimensions; this causes an effective interfacial tension contribution that is negative for contractile swimmers. We predict that domain growth then ceases at a length scale whe…
We formulate an active-gel theory for multicellular migration in the extra-cellular matrix (ECM). The cells are modeled as an active, polar solvent, and the ECM as a viscoelastic solid. Our theory enables to analyze the dynamic reciprocity between the migrating cells and their environment in terms of distinct relative forces and alignment mechanisms. We analyze the linear stability of polar cells migrating homogeneously in the ECM. Our theory predicts that, as a consequence of cell-matrix alignment, contractile cells migrate homogeneously for small wave vectors, while sufficiently extensile ce…
We report here a peculiar dynamically ordered state of clustering droplets of a mixture of organic solvent. There droplets are driven by the solutal Marangoni effect on the surface of aqueous surfactant solution. They form temporal ring clusters which start collapsing immediately after its formation. This process is repeated for more than several hours with the period of 5--20 minutes. We propose an inhomogeneous force model to phenomenologically understand the basic mechanism of this dynamics, where the forces acting on each particle are controlled differently. This droplet system offers a si…
We present a theory to predict the structure and thermodynamics of mixtures of colloids of different diameters, building on our earlier work [J. Chem. Phys. 145, 074904 (2016)] that considered mixtures with all particles constrained to have the same size. The patchy, solvent particles have short-range directional interactions, while the solute particles have short-range isotropic interactions. The hard-sphere mixture without any association site forms the reference fluid. An important ingredient within the multi-body association theory is the description of clustering of the reference solvent …
We study experimentally and numerically a (quasi) two dimensional colloidal suspension of self-propelled spherical particles. The particles are carbon-coated Janus particles, which are propelled due to diffusiophoresis in a near-critical water-lutidine mixture. At low densities, we find that the driving stabilizes small clusters. At higher densities, the suspension undergoes a phase separation into large clusters and a dilute gas phase. The same qualitative behavior is observed in simulations of a minimal model for repulsive self-propelled particles lacking any alignment interactions. The obse…
We study numerically and analytically a model of self-propelled polar disks on a substrate in two dimensions. The particles interact via isotropic repulsive forces and are subject to rotational noise, but there is no aligning interaction. As a result, the system does not exhibit an ordered state. The isotropic fluid phase separates well below close packing and exhibits the large number fluctuations and clustering found ubiquitously in active systems. Our work shows that this behavior is a generic property of systems that are driven out of equilibrium locally, as for instance by self propulsion…
In this paper we systematically derive a fourth-order continuum theory capable of reproducing mesoscale turbulence in a three-dimensional suspension of microswimmers. We start from overdamped Langevin equations for a generic microscopic model (pushers or pullers), which include hydrodynamic interactions on both, small length scales (polar alignment of neighboring swimmers) and large length scales, where the solvent flow interacts with the order parameter field. The flow field is determined via the Stokes equation supplemented by an ansatz for the stress tensor. In addition to hydrodynamic inte…
