Calculations of inclusive $α$ particle production are performed to interpret reaction experimental data induced by the two-neutron halo $^6$He and the isotopes $^{6,7}$Li on different target nuclei. We have implemented the zero-range post-form DWBA to compute the elastic and nonelastic breakup cross sections. Integrated cross sections, angular distributions and spectra are presented. Projectiles are approximated as two-body clusters, namely $^6$He as $α$+dineutron and $^{6}$Li ($^{7}$Li) interpreted as $α$+deuteron(triton). The São Paulo optical potential is employed in the calculation of the distorted wave functions for the incident channels, while standard phenomenological interactions are used for the fragment-target interactions. Calculations for $^6$Li and $^7$Li furnish a good description of the data, while the reaction involving $^6$He is found to be a complicated case, where data interpretation is still considered a major obstacle. The present analysis identifies an overall large contribution from inclusive breakup emissions for all the cases studied.
We develop a four-body model for the inclusive breakup of two-fragment halo projectiles colliding with two-fragment targets. In the case of a short lived projectiles, such as halo nuclei, on a deuteron target, the model allows the extraction of the neutron capture cross section of such projectiles. We supply examples.
The problem of the calculation of inclusive breakup cross sections in nuclear reactions is reexamined. For that purpose, the post-form theory proposed by Ichimura, Austern and Vincent [Phys. Rev. C32, 431 (1985) is revisited, and an alternative derivation of the non-elastic breakup part of the inclusive breakup is presented, making use of the coupled-channels optical theorem. Using the DWBA version of this model, several applications to deuteron and $^6$Li reactions are presented and compared with available data. The validity of the zero-range approximation of the DWBA formula is also investig…
We address the problem of the post-prior equivalence in inclusive breakup reactions induced by weakly-bound nuclei. The problem is studied within the DWBA model of Ichimura, Austern, Vincent [Phys. Rev. C32, 431 (1985)]. The post and prior formulas obtained in this model are briefly recalled, and applied to several breakup reactions induced by deuterons and $^6$Li projectiles, to test their actual numerical equivalence. The different contributions of the prior-form formula are also discussed. A critical comparison with the prior-form distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) model of Udagawa an…
The angular momentum basis method is introduced to solve the inclusive breakup within the model proposed by Ichimura, Austern, and Vincent [Phys. Rev. C 32, 431 (1985)]. This method is based on the geometric transformation between Jacobi coordinates, thus it is easy to corporate with particle spins. To test the validity of this partial wave expansion method, a benchmark calculation is done comparing with the one given in [Phys. Rev. C 92, 044616 (2015)]. Using the distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) version of IAV model, some applications to $^7$Li reactions are presented and compared wit…
In 1985, Hussein and McVoy [Nuc. Phys. A445 (1985) 124] elucidated a formula for the evaluation of the nonelastic breakup ("stripping") contribution in inclusive breakup reactions. The formula, based on the spectator core model, acquires a particularly simple and appealing form in the eikonal limit, to the extent that it has become the standard procedure to analyze single-nucleon knockout reactions at intermediate energies. In this contribution, a critical assessment of this formula is presented and its connection with other, noneikonal expressions discussed. Some calculations comparing the di…
We investigate the sensitivity of the non-exclusive nucleon induced deuteron breakup reaction to the three-nucleon interaction and distributions of three-nucleon force effects in inclusive spectra. To this end we solve the three-nucleon Faddeev equation at a number of incoming nucleon laboratory energies using the CD Bonn nucleon-nucleon interaction alone or combined with the 2π-exchange Tucson-Melbourne three-nucleon force. Based on these solutions energy spectra of an outgoing nucleon, at a specified detection angle as well as spectra integrated over that angle, are calculated. By integratin…
An analysis of the elastic and one-neutron removal channel for the reaction 8Li+208Pb reaction at energies around the Coulomb barrier is presented. For the elastic scattering, an optical model analysis of the experimental data is performed. The observed 7Li is interpreted as the superposition of the one-neutron transfer reaction, 208Pb(8Li,7Li)209Pb, and the breakup reaction. The separate contribution of each one of these processes has been calculated within the DWBA formalism. The sum of both contributions explains adequately the experimental angular distribution of 7Li.
The inclusive breakup of three-fragment projectiles is discussed within a four-body spectator model. Both the elastic breakup and the non-elastic breakup are obtained in a unified framework. Originally developed in the 80's for two-fragment projectiles such as the deuteron, in this paper the theory is successfully generalized to three-fragment projectiles. The expression obtained for the inclusive cross section allows the extraction of the incomplete fusion cross section, and accordingly generalizes the surrogate method to cases such as (t,p) and (t,n) reactions. It is found that two-fragment …
We present in this paper a formalism for deuteron-induced inclusive reactions. We disentangle direct elastic breakup contributions from other processes (which we generically call non-elastic breakup) implying a capture of the neutron both above and below the neutron emission threshold. The reaction is described as a two step process, namely the breakup of the deuteron followed by the propagation of the neutron-target system driven by an optical potential. The final state interaction between the neutron and the target can eventually form an excited compound nucleus. Within this context, the dir…
We present a recently developed theory for the inclusive breakup of three-fragment projectiles within a four-body spectator model \cite{CarPLB2017}, for the treatment of the elastic and inclusive non-elastic break up reactions involving weakly bound three-cluster nuclei in $A\,(a,b)\,X$ / $a = x_1 + x_2 + b$ collisions. The four-body theory is an extension of the three-body approaches developed in the 80's by Ichimura, Autern and Vincent (IAV) \cite{IAV1985}, Udagawa and Tamura (UT) \cite{UT1981} and Hussein and McVoy (HM) \cite{HM1985}. We expect that experimentalists shall be encouraged to s…
We derive the inclusive breakup cross section of a three-fragment projectile nuclei, $a = b +x_1 + x_2$, in the spectator model. The resulting four-body cross section for observing $b$, is composed of the elastic breakup cross section which contains information about the correlation between the two participant fragments, and the inclusive non-elastic breakup cross section. This latter cross section is found to be a non-trivial four-body generalization of the Austern formula \cite{Austern1987}, which is proportional to a matrix element of the form, $\langle\hatρ_{{x_1},{x_2}}\left|\left[W_{x_1}…

We develop a model to treat the inclusive non-elastic break up reactions involving weakly bound three-cluster nuclei. Borromean, two-nucleon, halo nuclei are candidates of unstable three-fragments projectiles. The model is based on the theory of inclusive breakup reactions commonly employed in the treatment of incomplete fusion and surrogate method. The theory was developed in the 80's by Ichimura, Autern and Vincent (IAV) [Phys. Rev. C 32, 431 (1985)] \cite{IAV1985}, Udagawa and Tamura (UT)[Phys. Rev. C 24, 1348 (1981)], \cite{UT1981} and Hussein and McVoy (HM)[Nucl. Phys. A 445, 124 (1985)],…

We calculate the cross sections of the elastic and inelastic breakup modes for the inclusive breakup reaction $^{28}$Si($^8$B,$^7$Be) at beam energies between 10 - 40 MeV/nucleon within a direct fragmentation model formulated in the framework of the post form distorted-wave Born-approximation. In contrast to the case of the stable isotopes, the inelastic breakup mode is found to contribute only upto 30% to the total breakup cross section, which is in agreement with the recently measured experimental data. However, the high energy tail of the energy spectra of $^7$Be fragment is dominated by th…
Background: Large $α$ yields have been reported over the years in reactions with $^{6}$Li and $^{7}$Li projectiles. Previous theoretical analyses have shown that the elastic breakup (EBU) mechanism (i.e., projectile breakup leaving the target in its ground state) is able to account only for a small fraction of the total $α$ inclusive breakup cross sections, pointing toward the dominance of non-elastic breakup (NEB) mechanisms. Purpose: We aim to provide a systematic study of the $α$ inclusive cross sections observed in nuclear reactions induced by $^{6}$Li projectiles. In addition to estimatin…
We present an account of the current status of the theoretical treatment of inclusive $(d,p)$ reactions in the breakup-fusion formalism, pointing to some applications and making the connection with current experimental capabilities. Three independent implementations of the reaction formalism have been recently developed, making use of different numerical strategies. The codes also originally relied on two different but equivalent representations, namely the prior (Udagawa-Tamura, UT) and the post (Ichimura-Austern-Vincent, IAV) representations. The different implementations have been benchmark…
Measurement of angular distributions and energy spectra of $α$ and deuterons through breakup, transfer and incomplete fusion processes to dis-entangle their relative contributions and to investigate relative importance of breakup-fusion compared to transfer. Inclusive $α$ production cross-sections have been measured for $^6$Li + $^{51}$V system near Coulomb barrier energies. Theoretical calculations for estimation of various reaction channels contributing to $α$ production have been performed with finite range coupled reaction method using \textsc{FRESCO} code. The cross-sections from non-capt…
Halo nuclei projectiles can undergo into a fragmentation process when scattered by a nucleus target. The corresponding core from exotic nuclei is usually observed while the others fragments of the reaction are not. We use the recently proposed theory by [Phys. Lett. B767, 53 (2017)] with a four-body description of the inclusive breakup reaction where the projectile is 20C described like a two-neutron halo nucleus. The momentum of both neutrons are integrated out giving a generic description of the core angular distribution. In this preliminary study we perform an analysis of the inclusive inel…
The elastic and alpha-production channels for the 6He+208Pb reaction are investigated at energies around the Coulomb barrier (E_{lab}=14, 16, 18, 22, and 27 MeV). The effect of the two-neutron transfer channels on the elastic scattering has been studied within the Coupled-Reaction-Channels (CRC) method. We find that the explicit inclusion of these channels allows a simultaneous description of the elastic data and the inclusive alpha cross sections at backward angles. Three-body Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels (CDCC) calculations are found to reproduce the elastic data, but not the trans…
New experimental results for the elastic scattering of 6He on 64Zn at incident energies of 15.0 and 18.0 MeV and 4He at 17.5 MeV along with results already published at 10.0 and 13.6 MeV, are presented. Elastic and alpha experimental cross sections are compared with coupled-reaction-channel, continuum-discretized coupledchannel, and DWBA inclusive-breakup models. The large yield of alpha particles observed at all measured energies can be explained by considering a nonelastic breakup mechanism.
The Lagrange-mesh $R$-matrix method is generalized to inhomogeneous equations. This method is numerically stable and efficient. It can be directly used for transfer reactions with the formalism discussed by Ascuitto and Glendenning [Phys. Rev. 181,1396 (1969)] and for inclusive breakup reactions modeled by Ichimura, Austern, and Vincent [Phys. Rev. C 32, 431 (1985)]. We first present a simple example to assess the method. Then the application to the $^{93}$Nb($d$,$pX$) non-elastic breakup is discussed.
Core-excitation effects in the scattering of two-body halo nuclei have been investigated in previous works. In particular, these effects have been found to affect in a significant way the breakup cross sections of neutron-halo nuclei with a deformed core. To account for these effects, appropriate extensions of the continuum-discretized coupled-channels (CDCC) method have been recently proposed. We aim to extend these studies to the case of breakup reactions measured under complete kinematics or semi-inclusive reactions in which only the angular or energy distribution of one of the outgoing fra…
This is a review on recent developments of the continuum discretized coupled-channels method (CDCC) and its applications to nuclear physics, cosmology and astrophysics, and nuclear engineering. The theoretical foundation of CDCC is shown, and a microscopic reaction theory for nucleus-nucleus scattering is constructed as an underlying theory of CDCC. CDCC is then extended to treat Coulomb breakup and four-body breakup. We also propose a new theory that makes CDCC applicable to inclusive reactions
Predictions of nuclear models guide the design of nuclear facilities to ensure their safe and efficient operation. Because nuclear models often do not perfectly reproduce available experimental data, decisions based on their predictions may not be optimal. Awareness about systematic deviations between models and experimental data helps to alleviate this problem. This paper shows how a sparse approximation to Gaussian processes can be used to estimate the model bias over the complete nuclide chart at the example of inclusive double-differential neutron spectra for incident protons above 100\,Me…
The full quantum mechanical (QM) model of inclusive breakup of Ichimura-Austern-Vincent (IAV) is implemented in this paper to calculate breakup from heavy radioactive nuclei on a $^9$Be target at intermediate energies. So far it had been implemented and applied only to low energy reactions with light projectiles. The IAV model is successful in predicting absolute cross sections among other observables. In order to get insight on the content of the model in the case of the complicated heavy-ion reactions, results are compared with those of the semiclassical transfer to the continuum (TC) model.…
The available data on the forward charge exchange of nucleons on the deuteron up to 2GeV per nucleon are reviewed. The value of the inclusive nd->pnn/np->pn cross section ratio is sensitive to the fraction of spin-independent neutron-proton backward scattering. The measurements of the polarisation transfer in d(\vec{n},\vec{p})nn or the deuteron analysing power in p(\vec{d},pp)n in high resolution experiments, where the final nn or pp pair emerge at low excitation energy, depend upon the longitudinal and transverse spin-spin np amplitudes. The relation between these types of experiments is dis…
The continuum-discretized coupled-channels method (CDCC) for exclusive reactions and the eikonal reaction theory (ERT) as an extension of CDCC to inclusive reactions are applied to deuteron induced reactions. The CDCC result reproduces experimental data on the reaction cross section for $d+^{58}$Ni scattering at 200 MeV/nucleon and ERT does data on the neutron-stripping cross section for inclusive $^7$Li$(d,n)$ reaction at 40 MeV. For deuteron induced reactions at 200 MeV/nucleon, target-dependence of the reaction, elastic-breakup, nucleon-stripping, nucleon-removal, complete- and incomplete-f…
In this review paper we present a detailed account of the extraction and the calculation of the total reaction cross section of strongly bound and weakly bound, stable and unstable, exotic, nuclei. We discuss the optical model and the more general coupled channels model of direct reactions. The effect of long-range absorption due to the coupling to excited states in the target and to the breakup continuum in the projectile is also discussed. The generalized optical theorem for charged particle scattering and the resulting sum-of differences method is then discussed. The so-called "quarter-poin…
Using a Glauber model with our relativistic fully microscopic structure model input, we give a full description of the halo nature of 31Ne that includes a self-consistent use of pairing and continuum contributions that makes predictions consistent with reaction cross section measurements. Our predictions of total reaction and one-neutron removal cross sections of 31Ne on a Carbon target were significantly enhanced compared with those of neighboring Neon isotopes, agreeing well with measurements at 240 MeV/nucleon and consistent with a single neutron halo. Furthermore, our calculations of the i…
Halo nuclei are located far from stability and exhibit a very peculiar structure. Due to their very short lifetime, they are often studied through reactions. Breakup reactions are of particular interest since their cross sections are large for these loosely-bound nuclei. Inclusive measurements of breakup--also called knockout reactions--have even higher statistics. In this proceeding, we study which nuclear-structure information can be inferred from the parallel-momentum distribution of the core of one-neutron halo nuclei after the knockout of its halo neutron. In particular, we analyse the in…
In an effort to better determine the 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction rate, we have performed inclusive and exclusive measurements of the Coulomb dissociation of 8B. The former was a study of longitudinal momentum distributions of 7Be fragments emitted in the Coulomb breakup of intermediate energy 8B beams on Pb and Ag targets. Analysis of these data yielded the E2 contribution to the breakup cross section. In the exclusive measurement, we determined the cross section for the Coulomb breakup of 8B on Pb at low relative energies in order to infer the astrophysical S factor for the 7Be(p,gamma)8B reactio…
We discuss the foundation of the Trojan Horse Method (THM) within the Inclusive Non-Elastic Breakup (INEB) theory. We demonstrate that the direct part of the INEB cross section, which is of two-step character, becomes, in the DWBA limit of the three-body theory with appropriate approximations and redefinitions, similar in structure to the one-step THM cross section. We also discuss the connection of the THM to the Surrogate Method (SM), which is a genuine two-step process.
In this paper, we address the problem of the post-prior equivalence in the calculation of inclusive breakup and transfer cross sections. For that, we employ the model proposed by Ichimura, Austern, and Vincent [Phys. Rev. C 32, 431 (1985)], conveniently generalized to include the part of the cross section corresponding the transfer to bound states. We pay particular attention to the case in which the unobserved particle is left in a bound state of the residual nucleus, in which case the theory prescribes the use of a complex potential, responsible for the spreading width of the populated singl…
Atomic nuclei are composite systems, and they may be dynamically excited during nuclear reactions. Such excitations are not only relevant to inelastic scattering but they also affect other reaction processes such as elastic scattering and fusion. The coupled-channels approach is a framework which can describe these reaction processes in a unified manner. It expands the total wave function of the system in terms of the ground and excited states of the colliding nuclei, and solves the coupled Shrödinger equations to obtain the $S$-matrix, from which several cross sections can be constructed. Thi…
A candidate of a neutron-halo nucleus, $^{31}$Ne, contains a single neutron in the $pf$ shell. Within the Glauber and eikonal models, we analyze reactions used to study $^{31}$Ne. We show in a $^{30}$Ne+n model that the magnitudes of the total reaction and above all of the one-neutron removal cross sections of $^{31}$Ne on $^{12}$C and $^{208}$Pb targets strongly depend on the orbital angular momentum of the neutron, thereby providing us with efficient ways to determine both the spin-parity and structure of the ground state of $^{31}$Ne. Besides these inclusive observables, we also calculate e…
Newly-published $^{42}$Si gamma-ray spectra and a final-state-inclusive $^{42}$Si production cross section value, obtained in a higher-statistics intermediate-energy two-proton removal experiment from $^{44}$S, are considered in terms of the final-state-exclusive cross sections computed using proposed shell-model effective interactions for nuclei near N=28. Specifically, we give cross section predictions when using the two nucleon amplitudes of the two-proton overlaps $<^{42}$Si$ (J^π)\,|\,^{44}$S$>$ computed using the newly-proposed {\sc sdpf-mu} shell-model Hamiltonian. We show that these pa…
The present work reports results for: pd radiative capture observables measured at center-of-mass (c.m.) energies in the range 0--100 keV and at 2 MeV by the TUNL and Wisconsin groups, respectively; contributions to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) integral in 3He from the two- up to the three-body breakup thresholds, compared to experimental determinations by the TUNL group in this threshold region; longitudinal, transverse, and interference response functions measured in inclusive polarized electron scattering off polarized 3He at excitation energies below the threshold for breakup into ppn, …
Alternative methods to calculate neutron capture cross sections on radioactive nuclei are reported using the theory of Inclusive Non-Elastic Breakup (INEB) developed by Hussein and McVoy [1]. The statistical coupled-channels theory proposed in Ref. [2] is further extended in the realm of random matrices. The case of reactions with the projectile and the target being two-cluster nuclei is also analyzed and applications are made for scattering from a deuteron target [3]. An extension of the theory to a three-cluster projectile incident on a two-cluster target is also discussed. The theoretical d…
We study the exotic deformed nucleus $^{31}$Ne using an approach that combines self-consistent structure and reaction theory. We utilize the fully-relativistic, microscopic deformed Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum (DRHBc) to demonstrate that deformation and pairing correlations give rise to a halo structure with large-amplitude $p$-wave configuration in $^{31}$Ne. We then use the valence nucleon wave functions and angle-averaged density distributions of $^{30}$Ne from this model as input for a Glauber reaction model to study the observables of neutron-rich Neon isotopes and search for h…
In this Letter I argue that the Surrogate Method, used to extract the fast neutron capture cross section on actinide target nuclei, which has important practical application for the next generation of breeder reactors, and the Trojan Horse Method employed to extract reactions of importance to nuclear astrophysics, have a common foundation, the Inclusive Non-Elastic Breakup (INEB)Theory. Whereas the Surrogate Method relies on the premise that the extracted neutron cross section in a (d,p) reaction is predominantly a compound nucleus one, the Trojan Horse Method, assumes a predominantly direct p…
We propose the use of neutron poisons in reactions induced by radioactive beams as a test of theoretical models aiming to relate neutron capture in nuclei with neutron surrogate reactions such as (d,p) reactions. We exploit the approximations necessary to obtain a direct relation between the two reactions; surrogate vs. neutron capture. We also show how this is intimately related to the momentum distribution of the neutron within the deuteron. The models we use are based on the theory of inclusive breakup reactions commonly employed in the treatment of incomplete fusion and surrogate method. S…
We apply the chiral potential with the momentum space semi-local regularization to the $^2$H and $^3$He photodisintegration processes and to the (anti)neutrino induced deuteron breakup reactions. Specifically, the differential cross section, the photon analyzing power and the final proton polarization have been calculated for the deuteron photodisintegration at the photon energies 30 MeV and 100 MeV. For the $^3$He photodisintegration predictions for the semi-inclusive and exclusive differential cross sections are presented for the photon energies up to 120 MeV. The total cross section is calc…
