We apply the chiral potential with the momentum space semi-local regularization to the $^2$H and $^3$He photodisintegration processes and to the (anti)neutrino induced deuteron breakup reactions. Specifically, the differential cross section, the photon analyzing power and the final proton polarization have been calculated for the deuteron photodisintegration at the photon energies 30 MeV and 100 MeV. For the $^3$He photodisintegration predictions for the semi-inclusive and exclusive differential cross sections are presented for the photon energies up to 120 MeV. The total cross section is calculated for the (anti)neutrino disintegrations of the deuteron for the (anti)neutrino energies below 200 MeV. The predictions based on the Argonne V18 potential or on the older chiral force with regularization applied in coordinate space are used for comparison. Using the fifth order chiral nucleon-nucleon potential supplemented with dominant contributions from the sixth order allows us to obtain converged predictions for the regarded reactions and observables. Our results based on the newest semi-local chiral potentials show even smaller cutoff dependence for the considered electroweak observables than the previously reported ones with a coordinate-space regulator. However, some of the studied polarization observables in the deuteron photodisintegration process reveal more sensitivity to the regulator value than the unpolarized cross section. The chiral potential regularized semi-locally in momentum space yields also fast convergence of results with the chiral order. These features make the used potential a high quality tool to study electroweak processes.
The cross sections for the M1-capture n + p -> D + gamma, the photo-magnetic and anti-neutrino disintegration of the deuteron are evaluated in the relativistic field theory model of the deuteron (RFMD). The cross section for M1-capture is evaluated by taking into account the contributions of chiral one-meson loop corrections and the Delta(1232) resonance. The cross sections for the photo-magnetic and anti-neutrino disintegration of the deuteron are evaluated by accounting for final-state interaction of the nucleon pair in the spinsinglet S-wave state. The amplitudes of low-energy elastic np an…
The scale-dependence of the nucleon-nucleon interaction, which in recent years has been extensively analysed within the context of chiral effective field theory, is, in fact, inherent in any potential models constrained by a fit to scattering data. A comparison between a purely phenomenological potential and local interactions derived from chiral effective field theory suggests that--thanks to the ability to describe nucleon-nucleon scattering at higher energies, as well as the deuteron momentum distribution extracted from electro-disintegration data--phenomenological potentials are best suite…
The chirally symmetric quark-gluon plasma produced in energetic heavy-ion collisions is predicted to supercool at the late stages of its evolution. The thermal energy is then transformed into the potential energy associated with an energetically unfavorable field configuration. Since the system is in an unstable state it eventually rolls down to the true minimum of the effective chiral potential. When this motion is described in terms of the sigma-model, we find that the energy of the coherent $σ-$field is very efficiently converted into pionic excitations due to anharmonic oscillations around…
We investigate the use of long distance regularization in SU(3) baryon chiral perturbation theory with decuplet fields. The one-loop decuplet contributions to the octet baryon masses, axial couplings, S-wave nonleptonic hyperon decays and magnetic moments are evaluated in a chirally consistent fashion by employing a cutoff to implement long distance regularization. The convergence of the chiral expansions of these quantities is improved compared to the dimensionally regularized version which indicates that the propagation of Goldstone bosons over distances smaller than a typical hadronic size,…
We formulate the infrared regularization of Becher and Leutwyler in a form analogous to our recently proposed extended on-mass-shell renormalization. In our formulation, IR regularization can be applied straightforwardly to multi-loop diagrams with an arbitrary number of particles with arbitrary masses.
The momentum dependence of the quark self energy gives a physically motivated and consistent regularization of both the real and imaginary parts of the quark loop contribution to the meson action. We show that the amplitudes for anomalous processes are always reproduced correctly.
We study the chiral phase transition in the presence of the chiral chemical potential $μ_5$ using the two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. In particular, we analyze the reason why one can obtain two opposite behaviors of the chiral critical temperature as a function of $μ_5$ in the framework of different regularization schemes. We compare the modifications of the chiral condensate and the critical temperature due to $μ_5$ in different regularization schemes, analytically and numerically. Finally, we find that, for the conventional hard-cutoff regularization scheme, the increasing dependence o…
The baryon masses are examined in SU(3) chiral perturbation theory to third order using the recently proposed infrared regularization scheme. Fourth order is estimated by evaluating the dominant diagram. With this regularization the magnitude of the loop integrals is reduced so that the convergence of the series appears to be better than in the heavy baryon approach.
In this work we have performed a detailed study of chiral nuclear forces at N4LO approximation applied to selected channels of the neutron-proton ($n p$) scattering. The idea is to analyse the different contributions to the nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) potential by separating the part coming from the exchange of pions and the one coming from the contact interactions. We consider two state-of-the-art chiral interactions at N4LO which are constructed using different regularization procedures: the non-local Idaho-Salamanca force and the semi-local interaction from the Bochum group. In order to compare …
We develop a subtractive renormalization scheme to evaluate the P-wave NN scattering phase shifts using chiral effective theory potentials. This allows us to consider arbitrarily high cutoffs in the Lippmann-Schwinger equation (LSE). We employ NN potentials computed up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in chiral effective theory, using both dimensional regularization and spectral-function regularization. Our results obtained from the subtracted P-wave LSE show that renormalization of the NNLO potential can be achieved by using the generalized NN scattering lengths as input--an alternativ…
Starting from chiral Lagrangians, possessing the SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R local chiral symmetry, we derive weak axial one-boson exchange currents in the leading order in the 1/M expansion (M is the nucleon mass). We apply these currents in calculations of the cross sections for the disintegration of the deuterons by the low energy neutrinos. The nuclear wave functions are derived from a variant of the OBEPQB potential and from the Nijmegen 93 and Nijmegen I nucleon-nucleon interactions. The comparison of our cross sections with those obtained within the pionless effective field theory and other poten…
We investigate the dependence of s-wave meson-baryon scattering amplitudes on different regularizations within the framework of the chiral unitary model. We employ two different regularization schemes, i.e. dimensional and form-factor regulariaztions to tame the divergences in the model. We also study the analytic structures of T-matrices, using those regularization schemes. We find that while the form-factor regularizaion produces almost the same results as the dimensional regularization did, the on-shell approximation is to some extent limited in the case of the form-factor regularization. H…
We consider the nucleon-nucleon scattering problem by applying time-ordered perturbation theory to the Lorentz invariant formulation of baryon chiral perturbation theory. Using a symmetry preserving higher derivative form of the effective Lagrangian, we exploit the freedom of the choice of the renormalization condition and obtain an integral equation for the scattering amplitude with an improved ultraviolet behavior. The resulting formulation is used to quantify finite regulator artifacts in two-nucleon phase shifts as well as in the chiral extrapolations of the S-wave scattering lengths and t…
The nucleon-deuteron radiative capture process is investigated using the chiral nuclear potentials and the electromagnetic currents developed by the Bochum-Bonn group. While the strong interaction is taken up to the next-to-next-to-leading order, the electromagnetic current consists of a single nucleon current, the leading one-pion exchange one and is supplemented by contributions from the long-range two-pion exchange current at next-to-leading-order. The theoretical predictions for the cross sections as well as analyzing powers show strong dependence on the values of regularization parameters…
In this talk I review studies of hadron structure functions in bosonized chiral quark models. Such models require regularization and I show that the two--fold Pauli--Villars regularization scheme not only fully regularizes the effective action but also leads the scaling laws for structure functions. This scheme is consistent with other computations of the pion structure function in that model. For the nucleon structure functions the present approach serves to determine the regularization prescription for structure functions whose leading moments are not given by matrix elements of local operat…
Three-dimensional cutoff regulators are frequently employed in multi-nucleon calculations, but they violate chiral symmetry and Lorentz invariance. A cutoff regularization scheme is proposed to compensate systematically at subleading orders for these symmetry violations caused by regulator artifacts. This is especially helpful when a soft momentum cutoff has to be used for technical reasons. It is also shown that dimensional regularization can still be used for some Feynman (sub)diagrams while cutoff regulators are used for the rest.
In this proceeding I briefly review current status of the construction of nuclear electro-weak currents within chiral effective field theory. I show that gauge and chiral symmetry requirements lead to the well-known continuity equations for the current and charge operators which, however, get modified at higher orders. Regularization of the current will be also discussed. I demonstrate that implementation of a cutoff regulator in a naive way leads to violation of chiral symmetry. To respect the underlying symmetries I propose to use higher derivative regularization in the nuclear forces and cu…
Novel techniques are presented, which identify the chiral power-counting regime (PCR), and realize the existence of an intrinsic energy scale embedded in lattice QCD results that extend outside the PCR. The nucleon mass is considered as a benchmark for illustrating this new approach. Using finite-range regularization, an optimal regularization scale can be extracted from lattice simulation results by analyzing the renormalization of the low energy coefficients. The optimal scale allows a description of lattice simulation results that extend beyond the PCR by quantifying and thus handling any s…
Novel techniques are presented, which identify the power-counting regime (PCR) of chiral effective field theory, and allow the use of lattice quantum chromodynamics results that extend outside the PCR. By analyzing the renormalization of low-energy coefficients of the chiral expansion of the nucleon mass, the existence of an optimal regularization scale is realized. The techniques developed for the nucleon mass renormalization are then applied to a test case: performing a chiral extrapolation without prior phenomenological bias. The robustness of the procedure for obtaining an optimal regulari…
We study the two-pion exchange potential at next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory. We propose a new cut-off scheme for the pion loop integrals based on spectral function regularization. We show that this method allows for a consistent implementation of constraints from pion-nucleon scattering. It leads to a much improved description of the partial waves with angular momentum l \geq 2 as compared to the calculation utilizing dimensional regularization.
We present improved nucleon-nucleon potentials derived in chiral effective field theory up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order. We argue that the nonlocal momentum-space regulator employed in the two-nucleon potentials of Refs. [E. Epelbaum, W. Gloeckle, U.-G. Meißner, Nucl. Phys. A747 (2005) 362], [D.R. Entem, R. Machleidt, Phys. Rev. C68 (2003) 041001] is not the most efficient choice, in particular since it affects the long-range part of the interaction. We are able to significantly reduce finite-cutoff artefacts by using an appropriate regularization in coordinate space which maintain…
The induced axial current and the chiral anomaly are studied in the normal phase of magnetized relativistic matter. A special attention is paid to the role of the chiral shift parameter Delta, leading to a relative shift of the longitudinal momenta in the dispersion relations of opposite chirality fermions. In the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, it is shown directly from the form of the gap equation that Delta necessarily exists in the normal phase in a magnetic field. By making use of the gauge invariant point-splitting regularization, we then show that the presence of Delta essentially modifies th…
We calculate the deuteron electromagnetic form factors in a modified version of Weinberg's chiral effective field theory approach to the two-nucleon system. We derive renormalizable integral equations for the deuteron without partial wave decomposition. Deuteron form factors are extracted by applying the Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann reduction formalism to the three-point correlation function of deuteron interpolating fields and the electromagnetic current operator. Numerical results of a leading-order calculation with removed cutoff regularization agree well with experimental data.
We review a new generation of nuclear forces derived in chiral effective field theory using the recently proposed semilocal regularization method. We outline the conceptual foundations of nuclear chiral effective field theory, discuss all steps needed to compute nuclear observables starting from the effective chiral Lagrangian and consider selected applications in the two- and few-nucleon sectors. We highlight key challenges in developing high-precision tree-body forces, such as the need to maintain consistency between two- and many-body interactions and constraints placed by the chiral and ga…
We extend the method of infrared regularization to spin-1 fields. As applications, we discuss the chiral extrapolation of the rho meson mass from lattice QCD data and the pion-rho sigma term.
Lattice regularization is used to perform chiral perturbation theory calculations in finite volume. The lattice spacing is chosen small enough to be irrelevant, and numerical results are obtained from simple summations.
We introduce a new formulation of baryon chiral perturbation theory which improves the ultraviolet behavior of propagators and can be interpreted as a smooth cutoff regularization scheme. It is equivalent to the standard approach, preserves all symmetries and therefore satisfies the Ward identities. Our formulation is equally well defined in the vacuum, one- and few-nucleon sectors of the theory. The equations (Bethe-Salpeter, Lippmann-Schwinger, etc.) for the scattering amplitudes of the few-nucleon sector are free of divergences in the new approach. Unlike the usual cutoff regularization, ou…
We study the $μ$-$μ_{45}$-$T$ phase diagram of the $2+1$-dimensional Gross-Neveu model, where $μ$ denotes the ordinary chemical potential, $μ_{45}$ the chiral chemical potential and $T$ the temperature. We use the mean-field approximation and two different lattice regularizations with naive chiral fermions. An inhomogeneous phase at finite lattice spacing is found for one of the two regularizations. Our results suggest that there is no inhomogeneous phase in the continuum limit. We show that a chiral chemical potential is equivalent to an isospin chemical potential. Thus, all results presented…
We calculate anomaly induced conductivities from a holographic gauge theory model using Kubo formulas, making a clear conceptual distinction between thermodynamic state variables such as chemical potentials and external background fields. This allows us to pinpoint ambiguities in previous holographic calculations of the chiral magnetic conductivity. We also calculate the corresponding anomalous current three-point functions in special kinematic regimes. We compare the holographic results to weak coupling calculations using both dimensional regularization and cutoff regularization. In order to …
In this work, we consider the effect of a constant anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of quarks in the SU(2) Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model in the mean field approximation. To this end, we use the Schwinger {\it ansatz}, which represents a linear magnetic field term in the Lagrangian. A regularization method inspired in the vacuum magnetic regularization (VMR) is adopted to avoid ultraviolet divergences. Our results indicate a smooth decrease of the pseudocritical temperature and quark condensates for magnetic fields $B \leq 0.1$ GeV$^2$ when a sizable AMM is considered. We found only a small window f…
