In a recent paper Das {\it et al.} [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 147}, 164102 (2017)] proposed the Fokker-Planck equation (FPE) for the Brownian harmonic oscillator in the presence of magnetic field and the non-Markovian thermal bath, respectively. This system has been studied very recently by J. C. Hidalgo-Gonzalez and J. I. Jiménez-Aquino [Phys. Rev. E {\bf{100}}, 062102 (2019)] and the Fokker-Planck equation was derived using the characteristic function. It includes a few extra terms in the FPE and the authors conclude that their method is accurate compared to the calculation by Das {\it et al.}. Then we reexamine our calculation and which is present in this comment. The revised calculation shows that both the methods give the same result.
We study work fluctuation theorems for oscillators in non-Markovian heat baths. By calculating the work distribution function for a harmonic oscillator with motion described by the generalized Langevin equation, the Jarzynski equality (JE), transient fluctuation theorem (TFT), and Crooks' theorem (CT) are shown to be exact. In addition to this derivation, numerical simulations of anharmonic oscillators indicate that the validity of these nonequilibrium theorems do not depend on the memory of the bath. We find that the JE and the CT are valid under many oscillator potentials and driving forces …
A Non-Markovian generalization of one-dimensional Contact Process (CP) is being introduced in which every particle has an age and will be annihilated at its maximum age $τ$. There is an absorbing state phase transition which is controlled by this parameter. The model can demonstrate oscillatory behavior in its approach to the stationary state. These oscillations are also present in the mean-field approximation which is a first-order differential equation with time-delay. Studying dynamical critical exponents suggests that the model belongs to the DP universlity class.
We derive an exact Markovian kinetic equation for an oscillator linearly coupled to a heat bath, describing quantum Brownian motion. Our work is based on the subdynamics formulation developed by Prigogine and collaborators. The space of distribution functions is decomposed into independent subspaces that remain invariant under Liouville dynamics. For integrable systems in Poincaré's sense the invariant subspaces follow the dynamics of uncoupled, renormalized particles. In contrast for non-integrable systems, the invariant subspaces follow a dynamics with broken-time symmetry, involving general…
This paper is a reply on the comments of Castanos-Yepes et al, on our paper "Super Statistical properties of the one-dimensional Dirac oscillator" published in Physica A (2020)
Non-Markovian evolutions are responsible for a wide variety of physically interesting effects. Here, we study non-locality of the non-classical state of a system consisting of a qubit and an oscillator exposed to the effects of non-Markovian evolutions. We find that the different facets of non-Markovianity affect non-locality in different and non-obvious ways: ranging from pronounced insensitivity of the Bell function to quite a spectacular evidence of information kick-back.
The system of nonlinear Langevin equations was obtained by using Hamiltonian's operator of two coupling quantum oscillators which are interacting with heat bath. By using the analytical solution of these equations, the analytical expressions for transport coefficients was found. Generalized Langevin equations and fluctuation-dissipation relations are derived for the case of a nonlinear non-Markovian noise. The explicit expressions for the time-dependent friction and diffusion coefficients are presented for the case of linear couplings in the coordinate between the collective two coupled harmon…
The nonequilibrium dynamics of a small quantum system coupled to a dissipative environment is studied. We show that (1) the oscillatory dynamics close to a coherent-to-incoherent transition is surprisingly different from the one of the classical damped harmonic oscillator and that (2) non-markovian memory plays a prominent role in the time evolution after a quantum quench.
Cator and Van Mieghem [Cator E, Van Mieghem P., Phys. Rev. E 89, 052802 (2014)] stated that the correlation of infection at the same time between any pair of nodes in a network is non-negative for the Markovian SIS and SIR epidemic models. The arguments used to obtain this result rely strongly on the graphical construction of the stochastic process, as well as the FKG inequality. In this note we show that although the approach used by the authors applies to the SIS model, it cannot be used for the SIR model as stated in their work. In particular, we observe that monotonicity in the process is …
In this comment, we discuss the mathematical formalism used in Boumali et al. (2020) which describes the superstatistical thermal properties of a one-dimensional Dirac oscillator. In particular, we point out the importance of maintaining the Legendre structure unaltered to ensure an accurate description of the thermodynamic observables when a Tsallis-like statistical description is assumed. Also, we remark that all the negative poles have to take into account to calculate the Gibbs--Boltzmann partition function. Our findings show that the divergences obtained by the authors in the Helmholtz fr…
We investigate a total thermodynamic entropy production rate of an isolated quantum system. In particular, we consider a quantum model of coupled harmonic oscillators in a star configuration, where a central harmonic oscillator (system) is coupled to a finite number of surrounding harmonic oscillators (bath). In this model, when the initial state of the total system is given by the tensor product of the Gibbs states of the system and the bath, every harmonic oscillator is always in a Gibbs state with a time-dependent temperature. This enables us to define time-dependent thermodynamic entropy f…
We obtain a non-Markovian quantum master equation directly from the quantization of a non-Markovian Fokker-Planck equation describing the Brownian motion of a particle immersed in a generic environment (e.g. a non-thermal fluid). As far as the especial case of a heat bath comprising of quantum harmonic oscillators is concerned, we derive a non-Markovian Caldeira-Leggett master equation on the basis of which we work out the concept of non-equilibrium quantum thermal force exerted by the harmonic heat bath upon the Brownian motion of free particle. The classical limit (or dequantization process)…
A stochastic approach to the quantum dynamics randomly modulated in time by a discrete state non-Markovian noise, which possesses an arbitrary non-exponential distribution of the residence times, is developed. The formally exact expression for the Laplace-transformed quantum propagator averaged over the stationary realizations of such N-state non-Markovian noise is obtained. The theory possesses a wide range of applications. It includes some previous Markovian and non-Markovian theories as particular cases. In the context of stochastic theory of spectral line shape and relaxation, the develope…
We study quantum non-Markovian dynamics of the Caldeira-Leggett model, a prototypical model for quantum Brownian motion describing a harmonic oscillator linearly coupled to a reservoir of harmonic oscillators. Employing the exact analytical solution of this model one can determine the size of memory effects for arbitrary couplings, temperatures and frequency cutoffs. Here, quantum non-Markovianity is defined in terms of the flow of information between the open system and its environment, which is quantified through the Bures metric as distance measure for quantum states. This approach allows u…
De la Cruz et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 128102 (2018); arXiv:1705.08683] studied a noise-induced transition in an oscillating stochastic population undergoing birth- and death-type reactions. They applied the Freidlin-Wentzell WKB formalism to determine the most probable path to the noise-induced escape from a limit cycle predicted by deterministic theory, and to find the probability distribution of escape time. Here we raise a number of objections to their calculations.
We present a simple biophysical example that invalidates the main conclusion of "Nat. Commun. 10, 3542 (2019)". Moreover, we explain that systems with one or more hidden states between at least one pair of observed states that give rise to non-instantaneous transition paths between these states also invalidate the main conclusion of the aforementioned work. This provides a flexible roadmap for constructing counterexamples. We hope for this comment to raise awareness of possibly hidden transition paths and of the importance of considering the microscopic origin of emerging non-Markovian (or Mar…
Three analytic results are proposed for a linear form of the modified Poisson-Boltzmann equation in the theory of bulk electrolytes. Comparison is also made with the mean spherical approximation results. The linear theories predict a transition of the mean electrostatic potential from a Debye-Hückel type damped exponential to a damped oscillatory behaviour as the electrolyte concentration increases beyond a critical value. The screening length decreases with increasing concentration when the mean electrostatic potential is damped oscillatory. A comparison is made with one set of recent experim…
We study the non-Markovian effects on the dynamics of entanglement in an exactly-solvable model that involves two independent oscillators each coupled to its own stochastic noise source. First, we develop Lie algebraic and functional integral methods to find an exact solution to the single-oscillator problem which includes an analytic expression for the density matrix and the complete statistics, i.e., the probability distribution functions for observables. For long bath time-correlations, we see non-monotonic evolution of the uncertainties in observables. Further, we extend this exact solutio…
We derive the nonequilibrium transient state work fluctuation theorem and also the Jarzynski equality for a classical harmonic oscillator linearly coupled to a harmonic heat bath, which is dragged by an external agent. Coupling with the bath makes the dynamics not only dissipative but also non-Markovian in general. Since we do not assume anything about the spectral nature of the harmonic bath the derivation is not only restricted to the Markovian bath rather it is more general, for a non-Markovian bath.
Motivated by the dynamics of resonant neurons we consider a differentiable, non-Markovian random process $x(t)$ and particularly the time after which it will reach a certain level $x_b$. The probability density of this first passage time is expressed as infinite series of integrals over joint probability densities of $x$ and its velocity $\dot{x}$. Approximating higher order terms of this series through the lower order ones leads to closed expressions in the cases of vanishing and moderate correlations between subsequent crossings of $x_b$. For a linear oscillator driven by white or coloured G…
Campisi, Zhan, Talkner and Hänggi have recently proposed a novel Hamiltonian thermostat which they claim may be used both in simulations and experiments [arXiv:1203.5968v4]. We show, however, that this is not possible due to the length and time scales involved, which depend exponentially on the total energy of the system. The implementation suggested by Campisi et alii implies equilibration times greater than the age of the universe for systems with more than a few dozen particles.
The problematic divergence of the $q$-partition function of the harmonic oscillator recently considered in \cite{plastino} is a particular case of the non-normalizabilty of the distribution function of classical Hamiltonian systems in non-extensive thermostatistics as discussed previously in \cite{lutsko-boon}.
Based on the dynamical quantization method we derive a quantum phase-space non-Markovian Smoluchowski equation describing the non-inertial Brownian motion of a harmonic oscillator immersed in a generic environment. In the long-time regime we investigate the tunneling phenomenon by evaluating the quantum Kramers escape rate of a Brownian particle over a potential barrier. As far as a quantum thermal reservoir is concerned, it is found that our steady quantum Kramers rate may depend upon no friction constant in the strong friction domain. This preposterous feature may suggest the existence of no…
The purpose of this comment is to correct mistaken assumptions and claims made in the paper Stochastic feedback, nonlinear families of Markov processes, and nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations by T. D. Frank. Our comment centers on the claims of a nonlinear Markov process and a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation. First, memory in transition densities is misidentified as a Markov process. Second, Frank assumes that one can derive a Fokker-Planck equation from a Chapman-Kolmogorov equation, but no proof was given that a Chapman-Kolmogorov equation exists for memory-dependent processes. A nonlinear M…
The concept of non-Markovianity in open quantum systems is traditionally associated with the existence of information backflows from the environment to the system. Meanwhile, the mechanisms through which such backflows emerge are still a subject of debate. In this work, we use collision models to study memory effects in the dynamics of a qubit system in contact with a thermal bath made up of few ancillas, in which system-ancilla and ancilla-ancilla interactions are considered. In the single-ancilla limit case, we show that the system-bath information flow exhibits an interesting mixture of cha…
A universal scheme is introduced to speed up the dynamics of a driven open quantum system along a prescribed trajectory of interest. This framework generalizes counterdiabatic driving to open quantum processes. Shortcuts to adiabaticity designed in this fashion can be implemented in two alternative physical scenarios: one characterized by the presence of balanced gain and loss, the other involves non-Markovian dynamics with time-dependent Lindblad operators. As an illustration, we engineer superadiabatic cooling, heating, and isothermal strokes for a two-level system, and provide a protocol fo…
Modelling noisy oscillations of active systems is one of the current challenges in physics and biology. Because the physical mechanisms of such processes are often difficult to identify, we propose a linear stochastic model driven by a non-Markovian bistable noise that is capable of generating self-sustained periodic oscillation. We derive analytical predictions for most relevant dynamical and thermodynamic properties of the model. This minimal model turns out to describe accurately bistable-like oscillatory motion of hair bundles in bullfrog sacculus, extracted from experimental data. Based o…
We illustrate a reverse Von Neumann measurement scheme in which a geometric phase induced on a quantum harmonic oscillator is measured using a microscopic qubit as a probe. We show how such a phase, generated by a cyclic evolution in the phase space of the harmonic oscillator, can be kicked back on the qubit, which plays the role of a quantum interferometer. We also extend our study to finite-temperature dissipative Markovian dynamics and discuss potential implementations in micro and nano-mechanical devices coupled to an effective two-level system.
