We obtain a non-Markovian quantum master equation directly from the quantization of a non-Markovian Fokker-Planck equation describing the Brownian motion of a particle immersed in a generic environment (e.g. a non-thermal fluid). As far as the especial case of a heat bath comprising of quantum harmonic oscillators is concerned, we derive a non-Markovian Caldeira-Leggett master equation on the basis of which we work out the concept of non-equilibrium quantum thermal force exerted by the harmonic heat bath upon the Brownian motion of free particle. The classical limit (or dequantization process) of this sort of non-equilibrium quantum effect is scrutinized, as well.
We determine the frequency-dependent response characteristics of a quantum system to a driven Caldeira-Leggett bath. The bath degrees of freedom are explicitly driven by an external time-dependent force, in addition to the direct time-dependent forcing of the system itself. After general considerations of driven Caldeira-Leggett baths, we consider the Rubin model of a chain of quantum particles coupled by linear springs as an important model of a quantum dissipative system. We show that in the presence of time-dependent driving of the chain, this model can be mapped to a quantum system which c…
We calculate the reduced density matrix for a system of coupled harmonic oscillators in a bosonic heat bath using the Born-Markov approximation and show that the expectation values of position and momentum evolve like classical quantities. We consider the cases where every oscillator is coupled to its own reservoir and where all oscillators are coupled to the same heat bath, pointing out the differences between these two models. In particular, for systems coupled to a common reservoir, we present an uncommon dissipation mechanism, which disappears, when the dynamics of the system are gouverned…
The continued-fraction method to solve classical Fokker--Planck equations has been adapted to tackle quantum master equations of the Caldeira--Leggett type. This can be done taking advantage of the phase-space (Wigner) representation of the quantum density matrix. The approach differs from those in which some continued-fraction expression is found for a certain quantity, in that the full solution of the master equation is obtained by continued-fraction methods. This allows to study in detail the effects of the environment (fluctuations and dissipation) on several classes of nonlinear quantum s…
I explore the processes of equilibration exhibited by the Adapted Caldeira-Leggett (ACL) model, a small unitary "toy model" developed for numerical studies of quantum decoherence between an SHO and an environment. I demonstrate how dephasing allows equilibration to occur in a wide variety of situations. While the finite model size and other "unphysical" aspects prevent the notions of temperature and thermalization from being generally applicable, certain primitive aspects of thermalization can be realized for particular parameter values. I link the observed behaviors to intrinsic properties of…
On the basis of the dynamical-quantization approach to open quantum systems, we can derive a non-Markovian Caldeira-Leggett quantum master equation as well as a non-Markovian quantum Smoluchowski equation in phase space. On the one hand, we solve our Caldeira-Leggett equation for the case of a quantum Brownian particle in a gravitational field. On the other hand, we solve our quantum Smoluchowski equation for a harmonic oscillator. In both physical situations we come up with the existence of a non-equilibrium thermal quantum force. Further, as a physical application of our quantum Smoluchowski…
We analyze a model system of fermions in a harmonic oscillator potential under the influence of a dissipative environment: The fermions are subject to a fluctuating force deriving from a bath of harmonic oscillators. This represents an extension of the well-known Caldeira-Leggett model to the case of many fermions. Using the method of bosonization, we calculate one- and two-particle Green's functions of the fermions. We discuss the relaxation of a single extra particle added above the Fermi sea, considering also dephasing of a particle added in a coherent superposition of states. The consequen…
Thermalization of a system in the presence of a heat bath has been the subject of many theoretical investigations especially in the framework of solid-state physics. In this setting, the presence of a large bandwidth for the frequency distribution of the harmonic oscillators schematizing the heat bath is crucial, as emphasized in the Caldeira-Leggett model. By contrast, ultracold gases in atomic traps oscillate at well-defined frequencies and therefore seem to lie outside the Caldeira-Leggett paradigm. We introduce interaction Hamiltonians which allow us to adapt the model to an atomic physics…

In this brief report we discuss the action functional of a particle with damping, showing that it can be obtained from the dissipative equation of motion through a modification which makes the new dissipative equation invariant for time reversal symmetry. This action functional is exactly the effective action of Caldeira-Leggett model but, in our approach, it is derived without the assumption that the particle is weakly coupled to a bath of infinite harmonic oscillators.
We consider quantum nonlinear systems with dissipation described within the Caldeira-Leggett model, i.e., by a nonlocal action in the path integral for the density matrix. Approximate classical-like formulas are derived in order to evaluate thermal averages of observables: the cases of linear and nonlinear dissipation are considered, and the framework is extended to the case of many degrees of freedom.
The dynamics of a Brownian particle in a constant magnetic field and time-dependent electric field is studied in the limit of white noise, using a Langevin approach for the classical problem and the path-integral Feynman-Vernon and Caldeira-Leggett framework for the quantum problem. We study the time evolution in configuration space of the probability distribution of an initial pure state represented by an asymmetrical Gaussian wave function and show that it can be described as the superposition of (a) the classical motion of the center of mass, (b) a rotation around the mean position, and (c)…
Are Markovian master equations for quantum Brownian motion independent of model assumptions used in the derivation and, thus, universal? With the aim of answering this question, we use a random band-matrix model for the system-bath interaction to derive Markovian master equations for the time evolution of one-dimensional quantum systems weakly coupled to a heat bath. We study in detail two simple systems, the harmonic oscillator and the two-level system. Our results are in complete agreement with those of earlier models, like the Caldeira-Legget model and, in the large-band limit, with the Aga…
We show that Wigner-Leggett-Caldeira equation for Wigner phase space distribution function which describes the quantum Brownian motion of a particle in a force field in a high temerature, Ohmic environment can be identified as a semiclassical version of Kramers' equation. Based on an expansion in powers of $\hbar$ we solve this equation to calculate the semiclassical correction to Kramers' rate.
We study the dissipative dynamics of a charged oscillator in a magnetic field by coupling (a la Caldeira and Leggett) it to a heat bath consisting of non-interacting harmonic oscillators. We derive here the auto-correlation functions of the position and momentum and study its behavior at various limiting situations. The equilibrium (steady state) dispersions of position and momentum are obtained from their respective autocorrelation functions. We analyse the equilibrium position and momentum dispersions at low and high temperatures for both low and high magnetic field strengths. We obtain the …
We study the influence of entanglement on the relation between the statistical entropy of an open quantum system and the heat exchanged with a low temperature environment. A model of quantum Brownian motion of the Caldeira-Leggett type - for which a violation of the Clausius inequality has been stated by Th.M. Nieuwenhuizen and A.E. Allahverdyan [Phys. Rev. E 66, 036102 (2002)] - is reexamined and the results of the cited work are put into perspective. In order to address the problem from an information theoretical viewpoint a model of two coupled Brownian oscillators is formulated that can al…
We study quantum non-Markovian dynamics of the Caldeira-Leggett model, a prototypical model for quantum Brownian motion describing a harmonic oscillator linearly coupled to a reservoir of harmonic oscillators. Employing the exact analytical solution of this model one can determine the size of memory effects for arbitrary couplings, temperatures and frequency cutoffs. Here, quantum non-Markovianity is defined in terms of the flow of information between the open system and its environment, which is quantified through the Bures metric as distance measure for quantum states. This approach allows u…
Starting from the Caldeira-Leggett (CL) model, we derive the equation describing the Quantum Brownian motion, which has been originally proposed by Dekker purely from phenomenological basis containing extra anomalous diffusion terms. Explicit analytical expressions for the temperature dependence of the diffusion constants are derived. At high temperatures, additional momentum diffusion terms are suppressed and classical Langivin equation can be recovered and at the same time positivity of the density matrix(DM) is satisfied. At low temperatures, the diffusion constants have a finite positive v…
We study the heat statistics of a quantum Brownian motion described by the Caldeira-Leggett model. By using the path integral approach, we introduce a novel concept of the quantum heat functional along every pair of Feynman paths. This approach has an advantage of improving our understanding about heat in quantum systems. First, we demonstrate the microscopic reversibility of the system by connecting the heat functional to the forward and its time-reversed probabilities. Second, we analytically prove the quantum-classical correspondence of the heat functional and their statistics, which allows…
We present a partition-free approach to the evolution of density matrices for open quantum systems coupled to a harmonic environment. The influence functional formalism combined with a two-time Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation allows us to derive a set of exact differential equations for the reduced density matrix of an open system, termed the Extended Stochastic Liouville-von Neumann equation. Our approach generalises previous work based on Caldeira-Leggett models and a partitioned initial density matrix. This provides a simple, yet exact, closed-form description for the evolution of open …
Fluctuation and dissipation are by-products of coupling to the `environment.' The Caldeira-Leggett model, a successful paradigm of quantum Brownian motion, views the environment as a collection of harmonic oscillators linearly coupled to the system. However, symmetry considerations may forbid a linear coupling, e.g. for a neutral particle in quantum electrodynamics. We argue that nonlinear couplings can lead to a fundamentally different behavior. Specifically, we consider a heavy particle quadratically coupled to quantum fluctuations of the bath. In one dimension the particle undergoes anomalo…
Starting from a Caldeira-Leggett model for the interaction of a system with an environment, Joichi, Matsumoto, and Yoshimura have reconsidered the derivation of the quantum Boltzmann equation. They find an extra term that accounts for the effects of virtual particles, and which drastically changes the results for relic densities of stable, weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), and for the decay products of unstable particles. We show, however, that this modified Boltzmann equation does not properly account for the interaction energy between the massive particles (which are decaying or …
We show that for cubic scalar field theories in five and more spacetime dimensions, and for the $T = 0$ limit of the Caldeira-Leggett model, the quantum master equation for long-wavelength modes initially unentangled from short-distance modes, and at second order in perturbation theory, contains divergences in the non-Hamiltonian terms. These divergences ensure that the equations of motion for expectation values of composite operators closes on expectation values of renormalized operators. Along the way we show that initial "jolt" singularities which occur in the equations of motion for operat…
The Caldeira-Leggett model of quantum Brownian motion is generalized using a generic velocity-dependent coupling. That leads to the description of a set of models able to capture Markovian and non-Markovian versions of Brownian and Lévy statistics, depending on the functional form of the coupling and on the spectral function of the reservoir. One specific coupling force is found that establishes a connection with Lévy statistics of cold atoms in \textit{Sisyphus} laser cooling. In the low-velocity limit, this also gives rise to additional inertia of the Brownian particle, reproducing the Abrah…
Quantum Brownian motion, described by the Caldeira-Leggett model, brings insights to understand phenomena and essence of quantum thermodynamics, especially the quantum work and heat associated with their classical counterparts. By employing the phase-space formulation approach, we study the heat distribution of a relaxation process in the quantum Brownian motion model. The analytical result of the characteristic function of heat is obtained at any relaxation time with an arbitrary friction coefficient. By taking the classical limit, such a result approaches the heat distribution of the classic…
A novel functional integral formulation of quantum mechanics for non-Lagrangian systems is presented. The new approach, which we call "stringy quantization," is based solely on classical equations of motion and is free of any ambiguity arising from Lagrangian and/or Hamiltonian formulation of the theory. The functionality of the proposed method is demonstrated on several examples. Special attention is paid to the stringy quantization of systems with a general A-power friction force $-κ[\dot{q}]^A$. Results for $A = 1$ are compared with those obtained in the approaches by Caldirola-Kanai, Batem…
