We develop a new finite volume method using unstructured mesh-vertex grids for coupled systems modeling shallow water flows and solute transport over complex bottom topography. Novel well-balanced positivity preserving discretization techniques are proposed for the water surface elevation and the concentration of the pollutant. For the hydrodynamic system, the proposed scheme preserves the steady state of a lake at rest and the positivity of the water depth. For the scalar transport equation, the proposed method guarantees the positivity and a perfect balance of the scalar concentration. The constant-concentration states are preserved in space and time for any hydrodynamic field and complex topography in the absence of source terms of the passive pollutant. Importantly and this is one of the main features of our approach is that the novel reconstruction techniques proposed for the water surface elevation and concentration satisfy the discrete maximum-minimum principle for the solute concentration. We demonstrate, in a series of numerical tests, the well-balanced and positivity properties of the proposed method and the accuracy of our techniques and their potential advantages in predicting the solutions of the shallow water-transport model.
We present an adaptive well-balanced positivity preserving central-upwind scheme on quadtree grids for shallow water equations. The use of quadtree grids results in a robust, efficient and highly accurate numerical method. The quadtree model is developed based on the well-balanced positivity preserving central-upwind scheme proposed in [A. Kurganov and G. Petrova, Commun. Math. Sci., 5 (2007), pp. 133--160]. The designed scheme is well-balanced in the sense that it is capable of exactly preserving "lake-at-rest" steady states. In order to achieve this as well as to preserve positivity of water…

A high-order, well-balanced, positivity-preserving quasi-Lagrange moving mesh DG method is presented for the shallow water equations with non-flat bottom topography. The well-balance property is crucial to the ability of a scheme to simulate perturbation waves over the lake-at-rest steady state such as waves on a lake or tsunami waves in the deep ocean. The method combines a quasi-Lagrange moving mesh DG method, a hydrostatic reconstruction technique, and a change of unknown variables. The strategies in the use of slope limiting, positivity-preservation limiting, and change of variables to ens…
This paper presents a class of novel high-order accurate discontinuous Galerkin (DG) schemes for the compressible Euler equations under gravitational fields. A notable feature of these schemes is that they are well-balanced for a general hydrostatic equilibrium state, and at the same time, provably preserve the positivity of density and pressure. In order to achieve the well-balanced and positivity-preserving properties simultaneously, a novel DG spatial discretization is carefully designed with suitable source term reformulation and a properly modified Harten-Lax-van Leer contact (HLLC) flux.…
We present a novel class of locally conservative, entropy stable and well-balanced discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for the nonlinear shallow water equation with a non-flat bottom topography. The major novelty of our work is the use of velocity field as an independent solution unknown in the DG scheme, which is closely related to the entropy variable approach to entropy stable schemes for system of conservation laws proposed by Tadmor [22] back in 1986, where recall that velocity is part of the entropy variable for the shallow water equations. Due to the use of velocity as an independent so…
A rezoning-type adaptive moving mesh discontinuous Galerkin method is proposed for the numerical solution of the shallow water equations with non-flat bottom topography. The well-balance property is crucial to the simulation of perturbation waves over the lake-at-rest steady state such as waves on a lake or tsunami waves in the deep ocean. To ensure the well-balance and positivity-preserving properties, strategies are discussed in the use of slope limiting, positivity-preservation limiting, and data transferring between meshes. Particularly, it is suggested that a DG-interpolation scheme be us…
This paper designs and analyzes positivity-preserving well-balanced (WB) central discontinuous Galerkin (CDG) schemes for the Euler equations with gravity. A distinctive feature of these schemes is that they not only are WB for a general known stationary hydrostatic solution, but also can preserve the positivity of the fluid density and pressure. The standard CDG method does not possess this feature, while directly applying some existing WB techniques to the CDG framework may not accommodate the positivity and keep other important properties at the same time. In order to obtain the WB and posi…
This paper develops the structure-preserving finite volume weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) hybrid schemes for the shallow water equations under the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) framework, dubbed as ALE-WENO schemes. The WENO hybrid reconstruction is adopted on moving meshes, which distinguishes the smooth, non-smooth, and transition stencils by a simple smoothness detector. To maintain the positivity preserving and the well-balanced properties of the ALE-WENO schemes, we adapt the positivity preserving limiter and the well-balanced approaches on static meshes to moving meshe…
In this paper, we design and analyze second order positive and free energy satisfying schemes for solving diffusion equations with interaction potentials. The semi-discrete scheme is shown to conserve mass, preserve solution positivity, and satisfy a discrete free energy dissipation law for nonuniform meshes. These properties for the fully-discrete scheme (first order in time) remain preserved without a strict restriction on time steps. For the fully second order (in both time and space) scheme, we use a local scaling limiter to restore solution positivity when necessary. It is proved that suc…
In this paper, we develop and present an arbitrary high order well-balanced finite volume WENO method combined with the modified Patankar Deferred Correction (mPDeC) time integration method for the shallow water equations. Due to the positivity-preserving property of mPDeC, the resulting scheme is unconditionally positivity preserving for the water height. To apply the mPDeC approach, we have to interpret the spatial semi-discretization in terms of production-destruction systems. Only small modifications inside the classical WENO implementation are necessary and we explain how it can be done. …
High order schemes are known to be unstable in the presence of shock discontinuities or under-resolved solution features, and have traditionally required additional filtering, limiting, or artificial viscosity to avoid solution blow up. Entropy stable schemes address this instability by ensuring that physically relevant solutions satisfy a semi-discrete entropy inequality independently of discretization parameters. However, additional measures must be taken to ensure that solutions satisfy physical constraints such as positivity. In this work, we present a high order entropy stable discontinuo…
Finite volume schemes for hyperbolic balance laws require a piecewise polynomial reconstruction of the cell averaged values, and a reconstruction is termed `well-balanced' if it is able to simulate steady states at higher order than time evolving states. For the shallow water system this involves reconstructing in surface elevation, to which modifications must be made as the fluid depth becomes small to ensure positivity, and for many reconstruction schemes a modification of the inertial field is also required to ensure the velocities are bounded. We propose here a reconstruction based on a co…
Many numerical schemes for hyperbolic systems require a piecewise polynomial reconstruction of the cell averaged values, and to simulate perturbed steady states accurately we require a so called 'well balanced' reconstruction scheme. For the shallow water system this involves reconstructing in surface elevation, to which modifications must be made as the fluid depth becomes small to ensure positivity. We investigate the scheme proposed in Skevington (2021) though numerical experiments, demonstrating its ability to resolve steady and near steady states at high accuracy. We also present a modifi…
Stochastic Galerkin formulations of the two-dimensional shallow water systems parameterized with random variables may lose hyperbolicity, and hence change the nature of the original model. In this work, we present a hyperbolicity-preserving stochastic Galerkin formulation by carefully selecting the polynomial chaos approximations to the nonlinear terms in the shallow water equations. We derive a sufficient condition to preserve the hyperbolicity of the stochastic Galerkin system which requires only a finite collection of positivity conditions on the stochastic water height at selected quadratu…
Active Flux is a third order accurate numerical method which evolves cell averages and point values at cell interfaces independently. It naturally uses a continuous reconstruction, but is stable when applied to hyperbolic problems. In this work, the Active Flux method is extended for the first time to a nonlinear hyperbolic system of balance laws, namely to the shallow water equations with bottom topography. We demonstrate how to achieve an Active Flux method that is well-balanced, positivity preserving, and allows for dry states in one spatial dimension. Because of the continuous reconstructi…
Minimizing computational cost is one of the major challenges in the modelling and numerical analysis of hydrodynamics, and one of the ways to achieve this is by the use of quadtree grids. In this paper, we present an adaptive scheme on quadtree grids for variable density shallow water equations. A scheme for the coupled system is developed based on the well-balanced positivity-preserving central-upwind scheme proposed in [18]. The scheme is capable of exactly preserving "lake-at-rest" steady states. A continuous piecewise bi-linear interpolation of the bottom topography function is used to ach…
In this paper, we construct a robust adaptive central-upwind scheme on unstructured triangular grids for two-dimensional shallow water equations with variable density. The method is well-balanced, positivity-preserving, and oscillation-free at the curve where two types of fluid merge. The proposed approach is an extension of the adaptive well-balanced, positivity-preserving scheme developed in Epshteyn and Nguyen (arXiv preprint arXiv:2011.06143, 2020). In particular, to preserve "lake-at-rest" steady states, we utilize the Riemann Solver with appropriately rotated coordinates to obtain the po…
In combination with the Grenander--Szegö theorem, we observe that a relaxed positivity condition on multipliers, milder than the basic %fundamental requirement of the Nevanlinna--Odeh multipliers that the sum of the absolute values of their components is strictly less than $1$, makes the energy technique applicable to the stability analysis of BDF methods for parabolic equations with selfadjoint elliptic part. This is particularly useful for the six-step BDF method for which no Nevanlinna--Odeh multiplier exists. We introduce multipliers satisfying the positivity property for the six-step BDF …
We consider in this work the numerical resolution of a 2D shallow water system with a Coriolis effect and bottom friction stresses on unstructured meshes by a new Finite Volume Characteristics (FVC) scheme, which has been introduced in the preliminary works that will be cited below. Our main goal is to extend this approach to 2D unstructured formalism while preserving the physical and mathematical properties of the system, including the C-property. First, we present our extension by preserving the advantages of the finite volume discretization such as conservation property and the method of ch…
In this work, we develop a robust adaptive well-balanced and positivity-preserving central-upwind scheme on unstructured triangular grids for shallow water equations. The numerical method is an extension of the scheme from [{\sc Liu {\em et al.}},J. of Comp. Phys, 374 (2018), pp. 213 - 236]. As a part of the adaptive central-upwind algorithm, we obtain local a posteriori error estimator for the efficient mesh refinement strategy. The accuracy, high-resolution, and efficiency of the new adaptive central-upwind scheme are demonstrated on a number of challenging tests for shallow water models.
A well-designed numerical method for the shallow water equations (SWE) should ensure well-balancedness, nonnegativity of water heights, and entropy stability. For a continuous finite element discretization of a nonlinear hyperbolic system without source terms, positivity preservation and entropy stability can be enforced using the framework of algebraic flux correction (AFC). In this work, we develop a well-balanced AFC scheme for the SWE system including a topography source term. Our method preserves the lake at rest equilibrium up to machine precision. The low-order version represents a gene…
