Minimizing computational cost is one of the major challenges in the modelling and numerical analysis of hydrodynamics, and one of the ways to achieve this is by the use of quadtree grids. In this paper, we present an adaptive scheme on quadtree grids for variable density shallow water equations. A scheme for the coupled system is developed based on the well-balanced positivity-preserving central-upwind scheme proposed in [18]. The scheme is capable of exactly preserving "lake-at-rest" steady states. A continuous piecewise bi-linear interpolation of the bottom topography function is used to achieve higher-order in space in order to preserve the positivity of water depth for the point values of each computational cell. Necessary conditions are checked to be able to preserve the positivity of water depth and density, and to ensure the achievement of a stable numerical scheme. At each timestep, local gradients are examined to find new seeding points to locally refine/coarsen the computational grid.
We present an adaptive well-balanced positivity preserving central-upwind scheme on quadtree grids for shallow water equations. The use of quadtree grids results in a robust, efficient and highly accurate numerical method. The quadtree model is developed based on the well-balanced positivity preserving central-upwind scheme proposed in [A. Kurganov and G. Petrova, Commun. Math. Sci., 5 (2007), pp. 133--160]. The designed scheme is well-balanced in the sense that it is capable of exactly preserving "lake-at-rest" steady states. In order to achieve this as well as to preserve positivity of water…
In this paper, we construct a robust adaptive central-upwind scheme on unstructured triangular grids for two-dimensional shallow water equations with variable density. The method is well-balanced, positivity-preserving, and oscillation-free at the curve where two types of fluid merge. The proposed approach is an extension of the adaptive well-balanced, positivity-preserving scheme developed in Epshteyn and Nguyen (arXiv preprint arXiv:2011.06143, 2020). In particular, to preserve "lake-at-rest" steady states, we utilize the Riemann Solver with appropriately rotated coordinates to obtain the po…
In this work, we develop a robust adaptive well-balanced and positivity-preserving central-upwind scheme on unstructured triangular grids for shallow water equations. The numerical method is an extension of the scheme from [{\sc Liu {\em et al.}},J. of Comp. Phys, 374 (2018), pp. 213 - 236]. As a part of the adaptive central-upwind algorithm, we obtain local a posteriori error estimator for the efficient mesh refinement strategy. The accuracy, high-resolution, and efficiency of the new adaptive central-upwind scheme are demonstrated on a number of challenging tests for shallow water models.
We develop a well-balanced central-upwind scheme for rotating shallow water model with horizontal temperature and/or density gradients---the thermal rotating shallow water (TRSW). The scheme is designed using the flux globalization approach: first, the source terms are incorporated into the fluxes, which results in a hyperbolic system with global fluxes; second, we apply the Riemann-problem-solver-free central-upwind scheme to the rewritten system. We ensure that the resulting method is well-balanced by switching off the numerical diffusion when the computed solution is near (at) thermo-geostr…
We present a new high-resolution, non-oscillatory semi-discrete central-upwind scheme for one-dimensional two-layer shallow-water flows with friction and entrainment along channels with arbitrary cross sections and bottom topography. These flows are described by a conditionally hyperbolic balance law with non-conservative products. A detailed description of the properties of the model is provided, including entropy inequalities and asymptotic approximations of the eigenvalues of the corresponding coefficient matrix. The scheme extends existing central-upwind semi-discrete numerical methods for…
We develop a new second-order unstaggered path-conservative central-upwind (PCCU) scheme for ideal and shallow water magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations. The new scheme possesses several important properties: it locally preserves the divergence-free constraint, it does not rely on any (approximate) Riemann problem solver, and it robustly produces high-resolution and non-oscillatory results. The derivation of the scheme is based on the Godunov-Powell nonconservative modifications of the studied MHD systems. The local divergence-free property is enforced by augmenting the modified systems with …
We present an energy conserving space discretisation based on a Poisson bracket that can be used to derive the dry compressible Euler as well as thermal shallow water equations. It is formulated using the compatible finite element method, and extends the incorporation of upwinding for the shallow water equations as described in Wimmer, Cotter, and Bauer (2019). While the former is restricted to DG upwinding, an energy conserving SUPG scheme for the (partially) continuous Galerkin thermal field space is newly introduced here. The energy conserving property is validated by coupling the Poisson b…
Stochastic Galerkin formulations of the two-dimensional shallow water systems parameterized with random variables may lose hyperbolicity, and hence change the nature of the original model. In this work, we present a hyperbolicity-preserving stochastic Galerkin formulation by carefully selecting the polynomial chaos approximations to the nonlinear terms in the shallow water equations. We derive a sufficient condition to preserve the hyperbolicity of the stochastic Galerkin system which requires only a finite collection of positivity conditions on the stochastic water height at selected quadratu…
A stochastic Galerkin formulation for a stochastic system of balanced or conservation laws may fail to preserve hyperbolicity of the original system. In this work, we develop hyperbolicity-preserving stochastic Galerkin formulation for the one-dimensional shallow water equations by carefully selecting the polynomial chaos expansion of the nonlinear $q^2/h$ term in terms of the polynomial chaos expansions of the conserved variables. In addition, in an arbitrary finite stochastic dimension, we establish a sufficient condition to guarantee hyperbolicity of the stochastic Galerkin system through a…

We present an advection-pressure flux-vector splitting method for the one and two- dimensional shallow water equations following the approach first proposed by Toro and Vázquez for the compressible Euler equations. The resulting first-order schemes turn out to be exceedingly simple, with accuracy and robustness comparable to that of the sophisticated Godunov upwind method used in conjunction with complete non- linear Riemann solvers. The technique splits the full system into two subsystems, namely an advection system and a pressure system. The sought numerical flux results from fluxes for each…
The shallow water equations (SWE) model a variety of geophysical flows. Flows in channels with rectangular cross sections may be modelled with a simplified one-dimensional SWE with varying width. Among other model parameters, information about the bathymetry and friction coefficient is needed for the correct and precise prediction of the flow. Although synthetic values of the model parameters may suffice for testing numerical schemes, approximations of the bathymetry and other parameters may be required for applications. Estimations may be obtained by experimental methods but some of those tec…
Within finite element models of fluids, vector-valued fields such as velocity or momentum variables are commonly discretised using the Raviart-Thomas elements. However, when using the lowest-order quadrilateral Raviart-Thomas elements, standard finite element discretisations of the vector transport equation typically have a low order of spatial accuracy. This paper describes two schemes that improve the accuracy of transporting such vector-valued fields on two-dimensional curved manifolds. The first scheme that is presented reconstructs the transported field in a higher-order function space, w…
