We present a new family of exact black hole configurations, which is a solution to a generalized Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton setup in arbitrary dimension. These solutions are asymptotically Lifshitz for any dynamical critical exponent $z\geq 1$. It turns out that the existence of a nontrivial scalar field is a direct consequence of breaking the spacetime isotropic scaling symmetry. This black hole family accepts various interesting limits that link it to well-known solutions in both the isotropic and anisotropic cases. We study the thermodynamics of these field configurations showing that the first law is satisfied and providing the corresponding Smarr formula, both of these relations account for an electric contribution. Furthermore, we show that for a certain parameter region, the anisotropic field configuration with a nonzero scalar field is thermodynamically preferred. This observation, together with a direct verification of the so-called scalarization conditions, suggest that the emergence of the dilaton field is due to a mechanism similar to spontaneous scalarization.
We propose a class of higher-derivative gravities that can be viewed as the Gauss-Bonnet extension of the Starobinsky model. The theory admits the Minkowski spacetime vacuum whose linear spectrum consists of the graviton and a massive scalar mode. In addition to the usual Schwarzschild black hole, we use numerical analysis to establish that in some suitable mass range, new black holes carrying the massive scalar hair can emerge. The new black hole serves as a "wall" separating the naked spacetime singularity and wormholes in the parameter space of the scalar hair. Our numerical results also in…
In the simplest scalar-tensor theories, wherein the scalar field is non-minimally coupled to the Ricci scalar, spontaneous scalarization of electrovacuum black holes (BHs) does not occur. This ceases to be true in higher dimensional spacetimes, $d>4$. We consider the scalarization of the higher dimensional Reissner-Nordström BHs in scalar-tensor models and provide results on the zero modes for different $d$, together with an explicit construction of the scalarized BHs in $d=5$, discussing some of their properties. We also observe that a conformal transformation into the Einstein frame maps thi…
Spontaneous scalarization is a mechanism that endows relativistic stars and black holes with a nontrivial configuration only when their spacetime curvature exceeds some threshold. The standard way to trigger spontaneous scalarization is via a tachyonic instability at the linear level, which is eventually quenched due to the effect of non-linear terms. In this paper, we identify all of the terms in the Horndeski action that contribute to the (effective) mass term in the linearized equations and, hence, can cause or contribute to the tachyonic instability that triggers scalarization.
We study spontaneous scalarization of electrically charged extremal black holes in $D\geq 4$ spacetime dimensions. Such a phenomenon is caused by the symmetry breaking due to quartic interactions of the scalar -- Higgs potential and Stueckelberg interaction with electromagnetic and gravitational fields, characterized by the couplings $a$ and $b$, respectively. We use the entropy representation of the states in the vicinity of the horizon, apply the inverse attractor mechanism for the scalar field, and analyze analytically the thermodynamic stability of the system using the laws of thermodynami…
It has recently been demonstrated that Reissner-Nordström black holes in composed Einstein-Maxwell-scalar field theories can support static scalar field configurations with a non-minimal negative coupling to the Maxwell electromagnetic invariant of the charged spacetime. We here reveal the physically interesting fact that scalar field configurations with a non-minimal {\it positive} coupling to the spatially-dependent Maxwell electromagnetic invariant ${\cal F}\equiv F_{μν}F^{μν}$ can also be supported in black-hole spacetimes. Intriguingly, it is explicitly proved that the positive-coupling b…
In the present paper we consider a class of extended scalar-tensor-Gauss-Bonnet (ESTGB) theories for which the scalar degree of freedom is excited only in the extreme curvature regime. We show that in the mentioned class of ESTGB theories there exist new black hole solutions which are formed by spontaneous scalarization of the Schwarzaschild balck holes in the extreme curvature regime. In this regime, below certain mass, the Schwarzschild solution becomes unstable and new branch of solutions with nontrivial scalar field bifurcate from the Schwarzschild one. As a matter of fact, more than one b…
Some models (such as the Skyrme model, a low-energy effective field theory for QCD) suggest that the high-density matter prevailing in neutron star interiors may be significantly anisotropic. Anisotropy is known to affect the bulk properties of nonrotating neutron stars in General Relativity. In this paper we study the effects of anisotropy on slowly rotating stars in General Relativity. We also consider one of the most popular extensions of Einstein's theory, namely scalar-tensor theories allowing for spontaneous scalarization (a phase transition similar to spontaneous magnetization in ferrom…
In the framework of the dynamical Chern-Simons gravity, we study the scalar field perturbations of the Reissner-Nordström-Melvin spacetime, which describes a charged black hole permeated by a uniform magnetic field. In the presence of the magnetic field, the scalar field acquires an effective mass whose square takes negative value in the half domain of the angular direction. This inevitably introduces the tachyonic instability and associated spontaneous scalarization as long as the coupling constant between the scalar field and the Chern-Simons invariant exceeds a threshold value. We study the…
It has recently been proved numerically that spinning black holes in Einstein-scalar theories which are characterized by a non-minimal negative coupling of the scalar field to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant of the curved spacetime may develop exponentially growing instabilities. Intriguingly, it has been demonstrated that this tachyonic instability, which marks the onset of the spontaneous scalarization phenomenon in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-scalar theory, characterizes spinning black holes whose dimensionless angular momentum parameter ${\bar a}\equiv a/M$ is larger than some critical value ${\b…

It has recently been proved that nontrivial couplings between scalar fields and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant of a curved spacetime may allow a central black hole to support spatially regular scalar hairy configurations. Interestingly, former numerical studies of the intriguing black-hole spontaneous scalarization phenomenon have demonstrated that the composed hairy black-hole-scalar-field configurations exist if and only if the dimensionless coupling parameter $\barη$ of the theory belongs to a discrete set $\{[\barη^{-}_{n},\barη^{+}_{n}]\}_{n=0}^{n=\infty}$ of scalarization bands. We have exam…
Spontaneous scalarization is a mechanism that allows a scalar field to go undetected in weak gravity environments and yet develop a nontrivial configuration in strongly gravitating systems. At the perturbative level it manifests as a tachyonic instability around spacetimes that solve Einstein's equations. The endpoint of this instability is a nontrivial scalar field configuration that can significantly modify a compact object's structure and can produce observational signatures of the scalar field's presence. Does such a mechanism exists for vector fields? Here we revisit the model that consti…
Scalar fields coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant can undergo a tachyonic instability, leading to spontaneous scalarization of black holes. Studies of this effect have so far been restricted to single black hole spacetimes. We present the first results on dynamical scalarization in head-on collisions and quasicircular inspirals of black hole binaries with numerical relativity simulations. We show that black hole binaries can either form a scalarized remnant or dynamically descalarize by shedding off its initial scalar hair. The observational implications of these findings are discussed.
It has recently been demonstrated that charged black holes can support spatially regular matter configurations made of massless scalar fields which are non-minimally coupled to the electromagnetic field of the charged spacetime. Intriguingly, using numerical techniques, it has been revealed that the resonant spectra of the composed charged-black-hole-nonminimally-coupled-scalar-field configurations are characterized by charge-dependent discrete scalarization bands $α\in\{[α^{-}_{n}({\bar Q}),α^{+}_{n}({\bar Q}]\}_{n=0}^{n=\infty}$, where $α$ is the dimensionless coupling constant of the theory…
Anisotropic generalization of Randall and Sundrum brane-world model is considered. A new class of exact solutions for brane and bulk geometry is found; it is related to anisotropic Kasner solution. In view of this, the old question of isotropy of initial conditions in cosmology rises once again in the brane-world context.
The one-loop renormalized effective potentials for the massive $ϕ^4$ theory on the spatially homogeneous models of Bianchi type I and Kantowski-Sachs type are evaluated. It is used to see how the quantum field affects the cosmological phase transition in the anisotropic spacetimes. For reasons of the mathematical technique it is assumed that the spacetimes are slowly varying or have specially metric forms. We obtain the analytic results and present detailed discussions about the quantum field corrections to the symmetry breaking or symmetry restoration in the model spacetimes.
The one-loop effective potential for $ϕ^4$ theory on a Bianchi type-I universe is evaluated in the adiabatic approximation. It is used to see the quantum-field effects on symmetry breaking and restoration in anisotropic spacetimes. The results show that the fate of symmetry will not be changed in the cases of conformal coupling or a vanishing scale curvature, and only for some suitable values of scalar-gravitational coupling could the symmetry be radiatively broken or restored.
We elaborate on the cosmological implications of the recently established non-perturbative $O(D,D$)-symmetric approach. Following the $α'$-complete Friedmann equations, we provide a qualitative description of the dynamics of anisotropy perturbations. We find that the spacetime stability depends on the sign of the generalized dilaton time derivative. We consider isotropic limits and find possible mechanism for pre-big bang cosmology, governed by the value of cosmological constant.
The special conformal transformation (composed by inversion - translation - inversion) is used to generate a time dependent conformally flat spacetime. In order to be an exact solution of Einstein's equations, we need as a source a stress tensor corresponding to an anisotropic fluid with negative regular energy density and positive pressures. For the static approximation, the generators of the infinitesimal transformation resemble those recently obtained by Majhi and Padmanabhan for the coordinate transformation leading to the "near horizon" Schwarzschild metric in Kruskal coordinates. The sta…
We consider spherically symmetric spacetimes sourced by a fluid with pressure anisotropy in the radial direction. We use gauge-invariant perturbation theory to study the stability of this class of spacetimes under axial perturbations. We apply our results to three diverse examples. Two examples arise as endpoints of collapse of a ball of fluid --- one describes a well-behaved stellar interior and the other has a naked singularity. We prove the stability of the stellar interior both with respect to Dirichlet and quasinormal mode boundary conditions on the perturbation. Surprisingly, the naked s…
In this paper, we study spontaneous scalarization of asymptotically anti-de Sitter charged black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar model with a non-minimal coupling between the scalar and Maxwell fields. In this model, Reissner-Nordström-AdS (RNAdS) black holes are scalar-free black hole solutions, and may induce scalarized black holes due to the presence of a tachyonic instability of the scalar field near the event horizon. For RNAdS and scalarized black hole solutions, we investigate the domain of existence, perturbative stability against spherical perturbations and phase structure. In a …
It has recently been demonstrated that magnetized black holes in composed Einstein-Maxwell-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet field theories with a non-minimal negative coupling of the scalar field to the Gauss-Bonnet curvature invariant may support spatially regular scalar hairy configurations. In particular, it has been revealed that, for Schwarzschild-Melvin black-hole spacetimes, the onset of the near-horizon spontaneous scalarization phenomenon is marked by the numerically computed dimensionless critical relation $(BM)_{\text{crit}}\simeq0.971$, where $\{M,B\}$ are respectively the mass and the magnetic…
Black holes in scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity are prone to scalarization, that is a spontaneous development of scalar hair for strong enough spacetime curvature while the weak field regime of the theory coincides with general relativity. Since large spacetime curvature is associated with smaller black hole masses, the merging of black holes can lead to dynamical descalarization. This is a spontaneous release of the scalar hair of the newly formed black hole in case its mass is above the scalarization threshold. Depending on the exact form of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling function, the stable scalariz…
Inspired by the Lifshitz gravity as a theory with anisotropic scaling behavior, we suggest a new $(n+1)-$dimensional metric in which the time and spatial coordinates scale anisotropically as $(t,r,θ_{i})\,\to (λ^{z}t,λ^{-1}r,λ^{x_i}\,θ_{i})$. Due to the anisotropic scaling dimension of the spatial coordinates, this spacetime does not support the full Schrödinger symmetry group. We look for the analytical solution of Gauss-Bonnet gravity in the context of the mentioned geometry. We show that Gauss-Bonnet gravity admits an analytical solution provided that the constants of the theory are properl…
Recently new scalarized black hole solutions were constructed in the extended scalar-tensor-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, where the scalar field is sourced by the curvature of the spacetime via the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. A natural extension of these results is to consider the case of nonzero black hole charge. In addition we have explored a large set of coupling functions between the Gauss-Bonnet invariant and the scalar field, that was not done until now even in the uncharged case, in order to understand better the behavior of the solutions and the deviations from pure general relativity. The result…
We study anisotropic inflationary solutions in massive Gauge-flation. We work with the theory in both the Stueckelberg and dynamical symmetry-breaking limits and demonstrate that extended periods of accelerated anisotropic expansion are possible. In the case of dynamical symmetry breaking, we show that spacetime can transition from isotropic quasi-de Sitter space to an accelerating Bianchi spacetime due to a rolling Higgs field - the spacetime can develop hair. Similarly, symmetry restoring transitions are possible from accelerating Bianchi spacetime to quasi-de Sitter space - the spacetime ca…
We discuss various aspects of anisotropic gravity in $(d+D)$-dimensional spacetime where $D$ dimensions are treated as extra dimensions. It is based on the foliation preserving diffeomorphism invariance and anisotropic conformal invariance. The anisotropy is embodied by introducing a factor $z$ which discriminates the scaling degree of the extra $D$ dimensions against the $d$-dimensional base spacetime and Weyl scalar field which mediates the anisotropic scaling symmetry. There is no intrinsic scale but a physical scale $M_*$ emerges as a consequence of spontaneous conformal symmetry breaking.…
The close limit approximation of binary black hole is a powerful method to study gravitational-wave emission from highly non-linear geometries. In this work, we use it as a tool to model black hole spacetimes in theories of gravity with a new fundamental scalar degree of freedom. As an example, we consider Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, which admits as solution the Schwarzschild geometry as well as black holes with scalar hair. Accordingly, we find scalar perturbations growing unbounded around binary systems. This "dynamical scalarization" process is easier to trigger (i.e. occurs at lo…
We generalize Penrose's notion of conformal infinity of spacetime, to situations with anisotropic scaling. This is relevant not only for Lifshitz-type anisotropic gravity models, but also in standard general relativity and string theory, for spacetimes exhibiting a natural asymptotic anisotropy. Examples include the Lifshitz and Schrodinger spaces (proposed as AdS/CFT duals of nonrelativistic field theories), warped AdS_3, and the near-horizon extreme Kerr geometry. The anisotropic conformal boundary appears crucial for resolving puzzles of holographic renormalization in such spacetimes.
To complement recent work on tests of spacetime symmetry in gravity, cubic curvature couplings are studied using an effective field theory description of spacetime-symmetry breaking. The associated mass dimension 8 coefficients for Lorentz violation studied do not result in any linearized gravity modifications and instead are revealed in the first nonlinear terms in an expansion of spacetime around a flat background. We consider effects on gravitational radiation through the energy loss of a binary system and we study two-body orbital perturbations using the post-Newtonian metric. Some effects…
We analytically study scalarization of higher-dimensional charged Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole. It is shown that static massive scalar field which is non-minimally coupled to Gauss-Bonnet invariant can be supported by higher-dimensional black hole in super-critical charge regime $Q/M\ge \bar{C}_d$ with $Q, M$ charge and mass of the black hole and $\bar{C}_d$ some unitless spacetime dimension-dependent quantity. Moreover, we show that the static massive scalar shell can be quite thin in the large mass regime $μM^{\frac{1}{d-3}}\gg 1$ with $μ$ mass of the scalar field.
In this paper we consider spherically symmetric interior spacetimes filled by anisotropic fluids in the context of Hořava gravity and Einstein-aether theory. We assume a specific non-static configuration of the aether vector field and show that the field equations admit a family of exact analytical solutions which can be obtained if one of the two metric coefficients is assigned. We study as an illustrative example the case in which the metric of the interior spacetime reproduces the Newtonian potential of a fluid sphere with constant density.
Anisotropic cosmological spacetimes are constructed from spherically symmetric solutions to Einstein's equations coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics and a positive cosmological constant. This is accomplished by finding solutions in which the roles of $r$ and $t$ are interchanged for all $r>0$ (i.e. $r$ becomes timelike and $t$ becomes spacelike). Constant time hypersurfaces have topology $R\times S^2$ and in all the spacetimes considered the radius of the two sphere vanishes as $t$ goes to zero. The scale factor of the other dimension diverges as $t$ goes to zero in some solutions and vanishe…
We consider five-dimensional massive vector-gravity theory which is based on the foliation preserving diffeomorphism and anisotropic conformal invariance. It does not have an intrinsic scale and the only relevant parameter is the anisotropic factor $z$ which characterizes the degree of anisotropy between the four-dimensional spacetime and the extra dimension. We assume that physical scale $M_*$ emerges as a consequence of spontaneous conformal symmetry breaking of vacuum solution. It is demonstrated that a very small mass for the vector particle compared to $M_*$ can be achieved with a relativ…
In this work, we investigate how the anisotropy affects the cosmological parameters estimation. Here the anisotropy is incorporated as a small gravitational disturbance. We calculate the Fisher information for both cosmological parameters $ε$ (expansion volume) and $ρ$ (expansion rate), and we show that the anisotropy introduces oscillations in the Fisher information spectrum. This implies that the estimation of the cosmological parameters is sensible to the direction of the momentum $k$ of particles. In addition, we observe that for small values of the momentum $k$ there is a substantial diff…
We examine the time evolution of the five-dimensional Einstein field equations subjected to a flat, anisotropic Robertson-Walker metric, where the 3D and higher-dimensional scale factors are allowed to dynamically evolve at different rates. By adopting equations of state relating the 3D and higher-dimensional pressures to the density, we obtain an exact expression relating the higher-dimensional scale factor to a function of the 3D scale factor. This relation allows us to write the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker field equations exclusively in terms of the 3D scale factor, thus yielding a set of 4D…
We calculate the exact solutions to the equations of motion that govern the light ray trajectories as they travel in a Kerr black hole's exterior that is considered to be filled with an inhomogeneous and anisotropic plasmic medium. This is approached by characterizing the plasma through conceiving a radial and an angular structure function, which are let to be constant. The description of the motion is carried out by using the Hamilton-Jacobi method, that allows defining two effective potentials, characterizing the evolution of the polar coordinates. The elliptic integrals of motion are then s…

For decades, physicists have analyzed various versions of a ``cosmic no-hair" conjecture, to understand under what conditions a spacetime that is initially spatially anisotropic and/or inhomogeneous will flow into an isotropic and homogeneous state. Wald's theorem, in particular, established that homogeneous but anisotropic spacetimes, if filled with a positive cosmological constant plus additional matter sources that satisfy specific energy conditions, will necessarily flow toward an (isotropic) de Sitter state at late times. In this paper we study the flow of homogeneous but anisotropic spac…
In this paper, we are interested in exploring the existence of stealth configurations on anisotropic backgrounds playing a prominent role in the non-relativistic version of the gauge/gravity correspondence. By stealth configuration, we mean a nontrivial scalar field nonminimally coupled to gravity whose energy-momentum tensor evaluated on the anisotropic background vanishes identically. In the case of a Lifshitz spacetime with a nontrivial dynamical exponent z, we spotlight the role played by the anisotropy to establish the holographic character of the stealth configurations, i.e. the scalar f…
The present work is related to anisotropic cosmological evolution in metric $f(R)$ theory of gravity. The initial part of the paper develops the general cosmological dynamics of homogeneous anisotropic Bianchi-I spacetime in $f(R)$ cosmology. The anisotropic spacetime is pervaded by a barotropic fluid which has isotropic pressure. The paper predicts nonlinear growth of anisotropy in such spacetimes. In the later part of the paper we display the predictive power of the nonlinear differential equation responsible for the cosmological anisotropy growth in various relevant cases. We present the ex…
We study single field inflation in noncommutative spacetime and compute two-point and three-point correlation functions for the curvature perturbation. We find that both power spectrum and bispectrum for comoving curvature perturbation are statistically anisotropic and the bispectrum is also modified by a phase factor depending upon the noncommutative parameters. The non-linearity parameter $f_{NL}$ is small for small statistical anisotropic corrections to the bispectrum coming from the noncommutative geometry and is consistent with the recent PLANCK bounds. There is a scale dependence of $f_{…
We investigate a quantum teleportation process between two comoving observers Alice and Bob in an anisotropic expanding spacetime. In this model, we calculate the fidelity of teleportation and we noted an oscillation of its spectrum as a function of the azimuthal angle. We found that for the polar angle $ϕ= \fracπ{2}$ and the azimuthal angle $θ\neq \frac{3π}{4} + nπ$ with $n = 0, 1, 2, ...$ the efficiency of the process decreases, i.e., the fidelity is less than one. In addition, it is shown that the anisotropic effects on the fidelity becomes more significative in the regime of smooth expansi…
In this paper, we study behaviour of Wilson loops in the boost-invariant nonequilibrium anisotropic quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions within the holographic approach. We describe the thermalization studying the evolution of the Vaidya metric in the boost-invariant and spatially anisotropic background. To probe the system during this process we calculate rectangular Wilson loops oriented in different spatial directions. We find that anisotropic effects are more visible for the Wilson loops lying in the transversal plane unlike the Wilson loops with partially longitudinal orien…
Recently, Kostelecky [V.A. Kostelecky, Phys. Lett. B 701, 137 (2011)] proposed that the spontaneous Lorentz invariance violation (sLIV) is related to Finsler geometry. Finsler spacetime is intrinsically anisotropic and induces naturally Lorentz invariance violation (LIV). In this paper, the electromagnetic field is investigated in locally Minkowski spacetime. The Lagrangian is presented explicitly for the electromagnetic field. It is compatible with the one in the standard model extension (SME). We show the Lorentz--violating Maxwell equations as well as the electromagnetic wave equation. The …
In this article, we explore the divergences and universal terms of the holographic entanglement entropy for singular regions in anisotropic and nonconformal theories that are holographically dual to geometries with a hyperscaling violation, parameterized by two parameters $z$ and $θ$. We study a curved corner in anisotropic space with arbitrary $θ$ and $z$. We choose the region to be shape invariant under the scaling of spacetime. For this case, we show that the contribution of the singularity to the entanglement entropy depends on $z$ and $θ$ values. We identify the structure of various diver…
In the context of brane cosmology, a scenario where our universe is a 3+1-dimensional surface (the ``brane'') embedded in a five-dimensional spacetime (the ``bulk''), we study geometries for which the brane is anisotropic - more specifically Bianchi I - though still homogeneous. We first obtain explicit vacuum bulk solutions with anisotropic three-dimensional spatial slices. The bulk is assumed to be empty but endowed with a negative cosmological constant. We then embed Z_2-symmetric branes in the anisotropic spacetimes and discuss the constraints on the brane energy-momentum tensor due to the…
The kinetic theory is formulated with respect to anholonomic frames of reference on curved spacetimes. By using the concept of nonlinear connection we develop an approach to modelling locally anisotropic kinetic processes and, in corresponding limits, the relativistic non-equilibrium thermodynamics with local anisotropy. This lead to a unified formulation of the kinetic equations on (pseudo) Riemannian spaces and in various higher dimensional models of Kaluza-Klein type and/or generalized Lagrange and Finsler spaces. The transition rate considered for the locally anisotropic transport equation…
We show that Zwei-Dreibein Gravity (ZDG), a bigravity theory recently proposed by Bergshoeff, de Haan, Hohm, Merbis, and Townsend in Phys.Rev.Lett. 111 (2013) 111102, admits exact solutions with anisotropic scale invariance. These type of geometries are the three-dimensional analogues of the spacetimes which were proposed as gravity duals for condensed matter systems. In particular, we find Schrödinger invariant spaces as well as Lifshitz spaces with arbitrary dynamical exponent $z$. We also find black holes that are asymptotically Lifshitz with $z=3$, showing that these (non-constant curvatur…
