We analytically study phase transitions of holographic charged Renyi entropies in two gravitational systems dual to the $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory at finite density and zero temperature. The first system is the Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS$_5$ black hole, which has finite entropy at zero temperature. The second system is a charged dilatonic black hole in AdS$_5$, which has zero entropy at zero temperature. Hyperbolic black holes are employed to calculate the Renyi entropies with the entangling surface being a sphere. We perturb each system by a charged scalar field, and look for a zero mode signaling the instability of the extremal hyperbolic black hole. Zero modes as well as the leading order of the full retarded Green's function are analytically solved for both systems, in contrast to previous studies in which only the IR (near horizon) instability was analytically treated.
The Rényi and Tsallis entropies are discussed as possible alternatives to the Bekenstein-Hawking area-law entropy. It is pointed out how replacing the entropy notion, but not the Hawking temperature and the thermodynamical energy may render the whole black hole thermodynamics inconsistent. The possibility to relate the Rényi and Tsallis entropies with the quantum gravity corrected Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is discussed.
Charged Renyi entropies were recently introduced as a measure of entanglement between different charge sectors of a theory. We investigate the phase structure of charged Renyi entropies for CFTs with a light, charged scalar operator. The charged Renyi entropies are calculated holographically via areas of charged hyperbolic black holes. These black holes can become unstable to the formation of scalar hair at sufficiently low temperature; this is the holographic superconducting instability in hyperbolic space. This implies that the Renyi entropies can be non-analytic in the Renyi parameter n. We…
We construct a new class of entanglement measures by extending the usual definition of Renyi entropy to include a chemical potential. These charged Renyi entropies measure the degree of entanglement in different charge sectors of the theory and are given by Euclidean path integrals with the insertion of a Wilson line encircling the entangling surface. We compute these entropies for a spherical entangling surface in CFT's with holographic duals, where they are related to entropies of charged black holes with hyperbolic horizons. We also compute charged Renyi entropies in free field theories.
We consider Renyi entropies of conformal field theories in flat space, with the entangling surface being a sphere. The AdS/CFT correspondence relates this Renyi entropy to that of a black hole with hyperbolic horizon; as the Renyi parameter $n$ increases the temperature of the black hole decreases. If the CFT possesses a sufficiently low dimension scalar operator the black hole will be unstable to the development of hair. Thus, as $n$ is varied, the Renyi entropies will exhibit a phase transition at a critical value of $n$. The location of the phase transition, along with the spectrum of the r…
This paper introduces "swiveled Renyi entropies" as an alternative to the Renyi entropic quantities put forward in [Berta et al., Phys. Rev. A 91, 022333 (2015)]. What distinguishes the swiveled Renyi entropies from the prior proposal of Berta et al. is that there is an extra degree of freedom: an optimization over unitary rotations with respect to particular fixed bases (swivels). A consequence of this extra degree of freedom is that the swiveled Renyi entropies are ordered, which is an important property of the Renyi family of entropies. The swiveled Renyi entropies are however generally dis…
We calculate the Rényi entropy $S_q(μ,λ)$, for a spherical entangling surface in CFT's with Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell holographic duals. Rényi entropies must obey some interesting inequalities by definition. However, for Gauss-Bonnet couplings $λ$, larger than a specific value, but still allowed by causality, we observe a violation of the inequality $\frac{\partial}{\partial q}\left({\frac{q - 1}{q}S_q(μ,λ)} \right) \ge 0$, which is related to the existence of negative entropy black holes, providing interesting restrictions in the bulk theory. Moreover, we find an interesting distinction o…
We analytically evaluate the Renyi entropies for the two dimensional free boson CFT. The CFT is considered to be compactified on a circle and at finite temperature. The Renyi entropies S_n are evaluated for a single interval using the two point function of bosonic twist fields on a torus. For the case of the compact boson, the sum over the classical saddle points results in the Riemann-Siegel theta function associated with the A_{n-1} lattice. We then study the Renyi entropies in the decompactification regime. We show that in the limit when the size of the interval becomes the size of the spat…
An entanglement Renyi entropy for a spatial partition of a system is studied in conformal theories which admit a dual description in terms of an anti-de Sitter gravity. The divergent part of the Renyi entropy is computed in 4D conformal N=4 super Yang-Mills theory at a weak coupling. This result is used to suggest a holographic formula which reproduces the Renyi entropy at least in the leading approximation. The holographic Renyi entropy is an invariant functional set on a codimension 2 minimal hypersurface in the bulk geometry. The bulk space does not depend on order $n$ of the Renyi entropy.…
We compute the quantum Renyi relative entropies in an infinite spinless fermionic chain with a defect. Doing a numerical analysis we will show that the resulting quantity depends non trivially on the effective central charge of the theory. Moreover, we will see that an explicit analytic expression can be written for all of them and from that, one can read the quantum fidelity and the relative entropy.
In the presence of a sharp corner in the boundary of the entanglement region, the entanglement entropy (EE) and Renyi entropies for 3d CFTs have a logarithmic term whose coefficient, the corner function, is scheme-independent. In the limit where the corner becomes smooth, the corner function vanishes quadratically with coefficient $σ$ for the EE and $σ_n$ for the Renyi entropies. For a free real scalar and a free Dirac fermion, we evaluate analytically the integral expressions of Casini, Huerta, and Leitao to derive exact results for $σ$ and $σ_n$ for all $n=2,3,\dots$. The results for $σ$ agr…
Renyi entropies S_q are useful measures of quantum entanglement; they can be calculated from traces of the reduced density matrix raised to power q, with q>=0. For (d+1)-dimensional conformal field theories, the Renyi entropies across S^{d-1} may be extracted from the thermal partition functions of these theories on either (d+1)-dimensional de Sitter space or R x H^d, where H^d is the d-dimensional hyperbolic space. These thermal partition functions can in turn be expressed as path integrals on branched coverings of the (d+1)-dimensional sphere and S^1 x H^d, respectively. We calculate the Ren…
We compute genus two partition functions in two dimensional conformal field theories at large central charge, focusing on surfaces that give the third Renyi entropy of two intervals. We compute this for generalized free theories and for symmetric orbifolds, and compare it to the result in pure gravity. We find a new phase transition if the theory contains a light operator of dimension $Δ\leq0.19$. This means in particular that unlike the second Renyi entropy, the third one is no longer universal.
The entanglement and Rényi entropies for spherical entangling surfaces in CFTs with gravity duals can be explicitly calculated by mapping these entropies first to the thermal entropy on hyperbolic space and then, using the AdS/CFT correspondence, to the Wald entropy of topological black holes. Here we extend this idea by taking into account corrections to the Wald entropy. Using the method based on horizon symmetries and the asymptotic Cardy formula, we calculate corrections to the Wald entropy and find that these corrections are proportional to the logarithm of horizon area. With the correcte…
General expressions for the Rényi entropies and central charges for higher derivative free spinors and scalars on even spheres are obtained using a direct spectral method on a compact lune division of the sphere. Formulae and numbers are rapidly obtained for any dimension and order of derivative. The relation between the conformal anomaly and the hyperbolic free energy is briefly explored using standard expansions. A field theoretic derivation of the central charge formula for higher derivative scalars in any (even) dimension, given by Osborn and Stergiou and by Gliozzi {\it et al}, is thereby…
Entropy is a fundamental concept in equilibrium statistical mechanics, yet its origin in the non-equilibrium dynamics of isolated quantum systems is not fully understood. A strong consensus is emerging around the idea that the stationary thermodynamic entropy is the von Neumann entanglement entropy of a large subsystem embedded in an infinite system. Also motivated by cold-atom experiments, here we consider the generalisation to Renyi entropies. We develop a new technique to calculate the diagonal Renyi entropy in the quench action formalism. In the spirit of the replica treatment for the enta…
I give some scalar field theory calculations on a d-dimensional lune of arbitrary angle, evaluating, numerically, the effective action which is expressed as a simple quadrature, for conformal coupling. Using this, the entanglement and Renyi entropies are computed. Massive fields are also considered and a renormalisation to make the (one-loop) effective action vanish for infinite mass is suggested and used, not entirely successfully. However a universal coefficient is derived from the large mass expansion. From the deformation of the corresponding lune result, I conjecture that the effective ac…
Entanglement entropy in even dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) contains well-known universal terms arising from the conformal anomaly. Renyi entropies are natural generalizations of the entanglement entropy that are much less understood. Above two spacetime dimensions, the universal terms in the Renyi entropies are unknown for general entangling geometries. We conjecture a new structure in the dependence of the four-dimensional Renyi entropies on the intrinsic and extrinsic geometry of the entangling surface. We provide evidence for this conjecture by direct numerical computations in…
Quantum Renyi relative entropies provide a one-parameter family of distances between density matrices, which generalizes the relative entropy and the fidelity. We study these measures for renormalization group flows in quantum field theory. We derive explicit expressions in free field theory based on the real time approach. Using monotonicity properties, we obtain new inequalities that need to be satisfied by consistent renormalization group trajectories in field theory. These inequalities play the role of a second law of thermodynamics, in the context of renormalization group flows. Finally, …
We study Rényi entropies for geometries with Lifshitz scaling and hyperscaling violation. We calculate them for specific values of the Lifshitz parameter, and analyze the dual spectrum of the ground state. In the large $d-θ$ limit they show that the ground state is unique in specific parameter ranges. We also calculate the Rényi entropies perturbatively around $n=1$, and derive constraints using the Rényi entropy inequalities, which correspond to the thermodynamic stability of the black holes.
We perform a holographic calculation of the Entanglement Rényi entropy $S_q(μ,λ)$, for spherical entangling surfaces in boundary CFT's with Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell holographic gravitational duals. We find that for Gauss-Bonnet couplings $λ$, larger than a specific value, but still allowed by causality, a violation of an inequality that Rényi entropies must obey by definition occurs. This violation is related to the existence of negative entropy black holes and restricts the coefficient of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling in the bulk theory. Furthermore, we discover a distinction in the analytic…
We compute the contribution of the vacuum Virasoro representation to the genus-two partition function of an arbitrary CFT with central charge $c>1$. This is the perturbative pure gravity partition function in three dimensions. We employ a sewing construction, in which the partition function is expressed as a sum of sphere four-point functions of Virasoro vacuum descendants. For this purpose, we develop techniques to efficiently compute correlation functions of holomorphic operators, which by crossing symmetry are determined exactly by a finite number of OPE coefficients; this is an analytic im…
We discuss the Renyi entanglement entropies of descendant states in critical one-dimensional systems with boundaries, that map to boundary conformal field theories in the scaling limit. We unify the previous conformal-field-theory approaches to describe primary and descendant states in systems with both open and closed boundaries. We provide universal expressions for the first two descendants in the identity family. We apply our technique to critical systems belonging to different universality classes with non-trivial boundary conditions that preserve conformal invariance, and find excellent a…
The quantum Renyi relative entropies play a prominent role in quantum information theory, finding applications in characterizing error exponents and strong converse exponents for quantum hypothesis testing and quantum communication theory. On a different thread, quantum Gaussian states have been intensely investigated theoretically, motivated by the fact that they are more readily accessible in the laboratory than are other, more exotic quantum states. In this paper, we derive formulas for the quantum Renyi relative entropies of quantum Gaussian states. We consider both the traditional (Petz) …
We investigate the steady-state Rényi entanglement entropies after a quench from a piecewise homogeneous initial state in integrable models. In the quench protocol two macroscopically different chains (leads) are joined together at the initial time, and the subsequent dynamics is studied. We study the entropies of a finite subsystem at the interface between the two leads. The density of Rényi entropies coincides with that of the entropies of the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) that describes the interface between the chains. By combining the Generalized Hydrodynamics (GHD) treatment of the qu…
Charged and symmetry-resolved Rényi entropies are entanglement measures quantifying the degree of entanglement within different charge sectors of a theory with a conserved global charge. We use holography to determine the dependence of charged Rényi entropies on small shape deformations away from a spherical or planar entangling surface in general dimensions. This dependence is completely characterized by a single coefficient appearing in the two point function of the displacement operator associated with the Rényi defect. We extract this coefficient using its relation to the one point functio…
This is an expanded version of the short report arXiv:1401.0539, where we stud- ied the (Renyi) entanglement entropies for the excited state defined by acting a given local operator on the ground state. We introduced the (Renyi) entanglement entropies of given local operators which measure the degrees of freedom of local operators and characterize them in conformal field theories from the viewpoint of quantum entanglement. In present paper, we explain how to compute them in free massless scalar field theories and we also investigate their time evolution. The results are interpreted in terms of…
We show that Renyi entropies of subregions can be used to distinguish when the entire system is in a microcanonical ensemble from when it is in a canonical ensemble, at least in theories holographically dual to gravity. Simple expressions are provided for these Renyi entropies in a particular thermodynamic limit with high energy density and fixed fractional size of the subregion. Holographically, the Renyi entropies are determined by the areas of cosmic branes inserted into the bulk spacetime. They differ between a microcanonical and a canonical ensemble because the two ensembles provide diffe…
We study entanglement Renyi entropies (EREs) of 1+1 dimensional CFTs with classical gravity duals. Using the replica trick the EREs can be related to a partition function of n copies of the CFT glued together in a particular way along the intervals. In the case of two intervals this procedure defines a genus n-1 surface and our goal is to find smooth three dimensional gravitational solutions with this surface living at the boundary. We find two families of handlebody solutions labelled by the replica index n. These particular bulk solutions are distinguished by the fact that they do not sponta…
We compute thermal corrections to Rényi entropies of $d$ dimensional conformal field theories on spheres. Consider the $n$th Rényi entropy for a cap of opening angle $2 θ$ on $S^{d-1}$. From a Boltzmann sum decomposition and the operator-state correspondence, the leading correction is related to a certain two-point correlation function of the operator (not equal to the identity) with smallest scaling dimension. More specifically, via a conformal map, the correction can be expressed in terms of the two-point function on a certain conical space with opening angle $2πn$. In the case of free confo…
Ryu and Takayanagi conjectured a formula for the entanglement (von Neumann) entropy of an arbitrary spatial region in an arbitrary holographic field theory. The von Neumann entropy is a special case of a more general class of entropies called Renyi entropies. Using Euclidean gravity, Fursaev computed the entanglement Renyi entropies (EREs) of an arbitrary spatial region in an arbitrary holographic field theory, and thereby derived the RT formula. We point out, however, that his EREs are incorrect, since his putative saddle points do not in fact solve the Einstein equation. We remedy this situa…
Relative entropy is a measure of distinguishability for quantum states, and plays a central role in quantum information theory. The family of Renyi entropies generalizes to Renyi relative entropies that include as special cases most entropy measures used in quantum information theory. We construct a Euclidean path-integral approach to Renyi relative entropies in conformal field theory, then compute the fidelity and the relative entropy of states in one spatial dimension at zero and finite temperature using a replica trick. In contrast to the entanglement entropy, the relative entropy is free o…
A remarkable yet mysterious property of black holes is that their entropy is proportional to the horizon area. This area law inspired the holographic principle, which was later realized concretely in gauge/gravity duality. In this context, entanglement entropy is given by the area of a minimal surface in a dual spacetime. However, discussions of area laws have been constrained to entanglement entropy, whereas a full understanding of a quantum state requires Renyi entropies. Here we show that all Renyi entropies satisfy a similar area law in holographic theories and are given by the areas of du…
I first calculate the charged spherical Renyi entropy by a numerical method that does not require knowledge of any eigenvalue degeneracies, and applies to all odd dimensions. An image method is used to relate the full sphere values to those for an integer covering, n. It is shown to be equivalent to a `transformation' property of the zeta--function. The infinite limit is explicitly constructed analytically and a relation deduced between the limits of corner coefficients and the effective action (free energy) which generalises, for free fields, a result of Bueno, Myers and Witczak--Krempa and E…
The Monster CFT plays an important role in moonshine and is also conjectured to be the holographic dual to pure gravity in AdS3. We investigate the entanglement and Renyi entropies of this theory along with other extremal CFTs. The Renyi entropies of a single interval on the torus are evaluated using the short interval expansion. Each order in the expansion contains closed form expressions of the modular parameter. The leading terms in the q-series are shown to precisely agree with the universal corrections to Renyi entropies at low temperatures. Furthermore, these results are shown to match w…
We present a new method to compute Rényi entropies in one-dimensional critical systems. The null-vector conditions on the twist fields in the cyclic orbifold allow us to derive a differential equation for their correlation functions. The latter are then determined by standard bootstrap techniques. We apply this method to the calculation of various Rényi entropies in the non-unitary Yang-Lee model.

We derive a general formula for the replica partition function in the vacuum state, for a large class of interacting theories with fermions, with or without gauge fields, using the equal-time formulation on the light front. The result is used to analyze the spatial entanglement of interacting Dirac fermions in two-dimensional QCD. A particular attention is paid to the issues of infrared cut-off dependence and gauge invariance. The Renyi entropy for a single interval, is given by the rainbow dressed quark propagator to order ${\cal O}(N_c)$. The contributions to order ${\cal O}(1)$, are shown t…
