We study quench dynamics in a t-V chain of spinless fermions (equivalent to the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain) with strong potential disorder. For this prototypical model of many-body localization we have recently argued that -- contrary to the established picture -- particles do not become fully localized. Here we summarize and expand on our previous results for various entanglement measures such as the number and the Hartley number entropy. We investigate, in particular, possible alternative interpretations of our numerical data. We find that none of these alternative interpretations appears to hold and, in the process, discover further strong evidence for the absence of localization. Furthermore, we obtain more insights into the entanglement dynamics and the particle fluctuations by comparing with non-interacting systems where we derive several strict bounds. We find that renormalized versions of these bounds also hold in the interacting case where they provide support for numerically discovered scaling relations between number and entanglement entropies.
It is well known that in Anderson localized systems, starting from a random product state the entanglement entropy remains bounded at all times. However, we show that adding a single boundary term to an Anderson localized Hamiltonian leads to unbounded growth of entanglement. Our results imply that Anderson localization is not a local property. One cannot conclude that a subsystem has Anderson localized behavior without looking at the whole system, as a term that is arbitrarily far from the subsystem can affect the dynamics of the subsystem in such a way that the features of Anderson localizat…
We study numerically a spreading of an initially localized wave packet in a one-dimensional discrete nonlinear Schrödinger lattice with disorder. We demonstrate that above a certain critical strength of nonlinearity the Anderson localization is destroyed and an unlimited subdiffusive spreading of the field along the lattice occurs. The second moment grows with time $ \propto t^α$, with the exponent $α$ being in the range $0.3 - 0.4$. For small nonlinearities the distribution remains localized in a way similar to the linear case.
We study the time evolution of one-dimensional systems of fermions with long-range interactions in the presence of strong disorder. Exact diagonalization of small systems supports many-body localization for weak Coulomb and dipolar interactions at high energy. The dephasing time of far apart degrees of freedom is analyzed. The result indicates that von Neumann entropy of one halve of the system evolves as a power law on time for a disentangled initial state. The numerical simulations performed in the Coulomb and dipolar cases are consistent with this prediction.
We explore the finite-temperature dynamics of the quasi-1D orbital compass and plaquette Ising models. We map these systems onto a model of free fermions coupled to strictly localized spin-1/2 degrees of freedom. At finite temperature, the localized degrees of freedom act as emergent disorder and localize the fermions. Although the model can be analyzed using free-fermion techniques, it has dynamical signatures in common with typical many-body localized systems: Starting from generic initial states, entanglement grows logarithmically; in addition, equilibrium dynamical correlation functions de…
We investigate the number entropy $S_N$---which characterizes particle-number fluctuations between subsystems---following a quench in one-dimensional interacting many-body systems with potential disorder. We find evidence that in the regime which is expected to show many-body localization (MBL) and where the entanglement entropy grows as $S\sim \ln t$ as function of time $t$, the number entropy grows as $S_N\sim\ln\ln t$, indicating continuing particle transport at a very slow rate. We demonstrate that this growth is consistent with a relation between entanglement and number entropy recently e…
The characterizing feature of a many-body localized phase is the existence of an extensive set of quasi-local conserved quantities with an exponentially localized support. This structure endows the system with the signature logarithmic in time entanglement growth between spatial partitions. This feature differentiates the phase from Anderson localization, in a non-interacting model. Experimentally measuring the entanglement between large partitions of an interacting many-body system requires highly non-local measurements which are currently beyond the reach of experimental technology. In this …
An important and incompletely answered question is whether a closed quantum system of many interacting particles can be localized by disorder. The time evolution of simple (unentangled) initial states is studied numerically for a system of interacting spinless fermions in one dimension described by the random-field XXZ Hamiltonian. Interactions induce a dramatic change in the propagation of entanglement and a smaller change in the propagation of particles. For even weak interactions, when the system is thought to be in a many-body localized phase, entanglement shows neither localized nor diffu…
We characterize the growth and spreading of operators and entanglement in two paradigmatic non-thermalizing phases - the many-body localized phase and the random singlet phase - using out-of-time-ordered correlators, the entanglement contour, and operator entanglement. We contrast these phases with strongly thermalizing holographic conformal field theories and fully localized Anderson insulators. We obtain a phenomenological description of the operator and state dynamics of these phases and demonstrate the utility of the entanglement contour and operator entanglement measures as useful probes …
Power-law interactions play a key role in a large variety of physical systems. In the presence of disorder, these systems may undergo many-body localization for a sufficiently large disorder. Within the many-body localized phase the system presents in time an algebraic growth of entanglement entropy, $S_{vN}(t)\propto t^γ$. Whereas the critical disorder for many-body localization depends on the system parameters, we find by extensive numerical calculations that the exponent $γ$ acquires a universal value $γ_c\simeq 0.33$ at the many-body localization transition, for different lattice models an…
Recent work has studied the growth of commutators as a probe of chaos and information scrambling in quantum many-body systems. In this work we study the effect of static disorder on the growth of commutators in a variety of contexts. We find generically that disorder slows the onset of scrambling, and, in the case of a many-body localized state, partially halts it. We access the many-body localized state using a standard fixed point Hamiltonian, and we show that operators exhibit slow logarithmic growth under time evolution. We compare the result with the expected growth of commutators in both…
Recent numerical work by Bardarson et. al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 017202 (2012)] revealed a slow, logarithmic in time, growth of entanglement entropy for initial product states in a putative many-body localized phase. We show that this surprising phenomenon results from the dephasing due to exponentially small interaction-induced corrections to the eigenenergies of different states. For weak interactions, we find that the entanglement entropy grows as ξln (Vt/\hbar), where V is the interaction strength, and ξis the single-particle localization length. The saturated value of the entanglement en…

We have recently shown that the logarithmic growth of the entanglement entropy following a quantum quench in a many-body localized (MBL) phase is accompanied by a slow growth of the number entropy, $S_N\sim\ln\ln t$. Here we provide an in-depth numerical study of $S_N(t)$ for the disordered Heisenberg chain and show that this behavior is not transient and persists even for very strong disorder. Calculating the truncated Rényi number entropy $S_N^{(α)}(t)=(1-α)^{-1}\ln\sum_n p^α(n)$ for $α\ll 1$ and $p(n)>p_c$ -- which is sensitive to large number fluctuations occurring with low probability -- …
We introduce techniques for analysing the structure of quantum states of many-body localized (MBL) spin chains by identifying correlation clusters from pairwise correlations. These techniques proceed by interpreting pairwise correlations in the state as a weighted graph, which we analyse using an established graph theoretic clustering algorithm. We validate our approach by studying the eigenstates of a disordered XXZ spin chain across the MBL to ergodic transition, as well as the non-equilibrium dyanmics in the MBL phase following a global quantum quench. We successfully reproduce theoretical …
We investigate the stationary and dynamical behavior of an Anderson localized chain coupled to a single central bound state. The coupling to the central site partially dilutes the Anderson localized peak towards the nearly resonant sites. In particular, the number of resonantly coupled sites remains finite in the thermodynamic limit. This is further supported by a multifractal analysis of eigenstates that shows the frozen spectrum of fractal dimension, which is characteristic for localized phases in models with power-law hopping. Although the well-known Fano-resonance problem is seemingly simi…
We formulate a dynamical real space renormalization group approach to describe the time evolution of a random spin-1/2 chain, or interacting fermions, initialized in a state with fixed particle positions. Within this approach we identify a many-body localized state of the chain as a dynamical infinite randomness fixed point. Near this fixed point our method becomes asymptotically exact, allowing analytic calculation of time dependent quantities. In particular we explain the striking universal features in the growth of the entanglement seen in recent numerical simulations: unbounded logarithmic…
We theoretically study the response of a many-body localized system to a local quench from a quantum information perspective. We find that the local quench triggers entanglement growth throughout the whole system, giving rise to a logarithmic lightcone. This saturates the modified Lieb-Robinson bound for quantum information propagation in many-body localized systems previously conjectured based on the existence of local integrals of motion. In addition, near the localization-delocalization transition, we find that the final states after the local quench exhibit volume-law entanglement. We also…
The interplay of interactions and strong disorder can lead to an exotic quantum many-body localized (MBL) phase. Beyond the absence of transport, the MBL phase has distinctive signatures, such as slow dephasing and logarithmic entanglement growth; they commonly result in slow and subtle modification of the dynamics, making their measurement challenging. Here, we experimentally characterize these properties of the MBL phase in a system of coupled superconducting qubits. By implementing phase sensitive techniques, we map out the structure of local integrals of motion in the MBL phase. Tomographi…
In this paper we first compute the out-of-time-order correlators (OTOC) for both a phenomenological model and a random-field XXZ model in the many-body localized phase. We show that the OTOC decreases in power law in a many-body localized system at the scrambling time. We also find that the OTOC can also be used to distinguish a many-body localized phase from an Anderson localized phase, while a normal correlator cannot. Furthermore, we prove an exact theorem that relates the growth of the second Rényi entropy in the quench dynamics to the decay of the OTOC in equilibrium. This theorem works f…
We study the properties of excited states in one-dimensional many-body localized (MBL) systems using a matrix product state algorithm. First, the method is tested for a large disordered non-interacting system, where for comparison we compute a quasi-exact reference solution via a Monte Carlo sampling of the single-particle levels. Thereafter, we present extensive data obtained for large interacting systems of L~100 sites and large bond dimensions chi~1700, which allows us to quantitatively analyze the scaling behavior of the entanglement S in the system. The MBL phase is characterized by a log…
An interacting system subjected to a strong linear potential can host a many-body localized (MBL) phase when being slightly perturbed. This so-called Wannier-Stark or `tilted-field' MBL phase inherits many properties from the well-investigated disordered MBL phase, and provides an alternative route to experimentally engineer interacting localized systems without quenched disorder. In this work, we investigate the dynamics of entanglement in a Wannier-Stark MBL system coupled to a dephasing environment. As an accessible entanglement proxy, we use the third Rényi negativity $R_3$, which reduces …

An interacting quantum system that is subject to disorder may cease to thermalize due to localization of its constituents, thereby marking the breakdown of thermodynamics. The key to our understanding of this phenomenon lies in the system's entanglement, which is experimentally challenging to measure. We realize such a many-body-localized system in a disordered Bose-Hubbard chain and characterize its entanglement properties through particle fluctuations and correlations. We observe that the particles become localized, suppressing transport and preventing the thermalization of subsystems. Notab…
The time evolution of spatial fluctuations in inhomogeneous d-dimensional biological systems is analyzed. A single species continuous growth model, in which the population disperses via diffusion and convection is considered. Time-independent environmental heterogeneities, such as a random distribution of nutrients or sunlight are modeled by quenched disorder in the growth rate. Linearization of this model of population dynamics shows that the fastest growing localized state dominates in a time proportional to a power of the logarithm of the system size. Using an analogy with a Schrodinger equ…
We study many-body localization for a disordered chain of spin 1/2 fermions. In [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{94}, 241104 (2016)], when both down and up components are exposed to the same strong disorder, the authors observe a power law growth of the entanglement entropy that suggests that many-body localization is not complete; the density (charge) degree of freedom is localized, while the spin degree of freedom is apparently delocalized. We show that this power-like behavior is only a transient effect and that, for longer times, the growth is logarithmic in time suggesting that the spin degree of fr…
We probe the existence of a many-body localized phase (MBL-phase) in a spinless fermionic Hubbard chain with algebraically localized single-particle states, by investigating both static and dynamical properties of the system. This MBL-phase can be characterized by an extensive number of integrals of motion which develop algebraically decaying tails, unlike the case of exponentially localized single-particle states. We focus on the implications for the quantum information propagation through the system. We provide evidence that the bipartite entanglement entropy after a quantum quench has an un…
The low-frequency response of systems near the many-body localization phase transition, on either side of the transition, is dominated by contributions from rare regions that are locally "in the other phase", i.e., rare localized regions in a system that is typically thermal, or rare thermal regions in a system that is typically localized. Rare localized regions affect the properties of the thermal phase, especially in one dimension, by acting as bottlenecks for transport and the growth of entanglement, whereas rare thermal regions in the localized phase act as local "baths" and dominate the l…

We investigate the relaxation dynamics of an interacting Stark-localized system coupled to a dephasing bath, and compare its behavior to the conventional disorder-induced many body localized system. Specifically, we study the dynamics of population imbalance between even and odd sites, and the growth of the von Neumann entropy. For a large potential gradient, the imbalance is found to decay on a time scale that grows quadratically with the Wannier-Stark tilt. For the non-interacting system, it shows an exponential decay, which becomes a stretched exponential decay in the presence of finite int…
