We show that a simple one-dimensional model of spinless fermions with pair hopping displays a phase in which a Luttinger liquid of paired fermions coexists with a Luttinger liquid of unpaired fermions. Our results are based on extensive numerical density-matrix renormalisation group calculations and are supported by a two-fluid model that captures the essence of the coexistence region.
The effect of interchain hopping and interaction on Anderson localization has been investigated for two coupled chains of spinless fermions with nearest neighbor interaction. Using the renormalization group method, we find that interchain hopping plays a significant role when the correlation gap induced by the interplay of interchain hopping and intrachain interaction becomes larger than the Anderson localization energy scale induced by impurities. The strong competition between localization and delocalization is examined for attractive interaction.
The canonical Monte-Carlo is used to study the phase transitions from the low-temperature ordered phase to the high-temperature disordered phase in the two-dimensional Falicov-Kimball model with correlated hopping. As the low-temperature ordered phase we consider the chessboard phase, the axial striped phase and the segregated phase. It is shown that all three phases persist also at finite temperatures (up to the critical temperature $τ_c$) and that the phase transition at the critical point is of the first order for the chessboard and axial striped phase and of the second order for the segreg…
A numerical diagonalization technique with canonical Monte-Carlo simulation algorithm is used to study the phase transitions from low temperature (ordered) phase to high temperature (disordered) phase of spinless Falicov-Kimball model on a triangular lattice with correlated hopping ($t^{\prime}$). It is observed that the low temperature ordered phases (i.e. regular, bounded and segregated) persist up to a finite critical temperature ($T_{c}$). In addition, we observe that the critical temperature decreases with increasing the correlated hopping in regular and bounded phases whereas it increase…
Starting from the two-orbital Kondo-lattice model with classical t_2g spins, an effective spinless fermion model is derived for strong Hund coupling J_H with a projection technique. The model is studied by Monte Carlo simulations and analytically using a uniform hopping approximation. The results for the spinless fermion model are in remarkable agreement with those of the original Kondo-lattice model, independent of the carrier concentration, and even for moderate Hund coupling J_H. Phase separation, the phase diagram in uniform hopping approximation, as well as spectral properties including t…
We use the Density-Matrix Renormalization Group to study the single-particle and two-particle correlation functions of spinless fermions in the ground state of a quarter-filled ladder. This ladder consists of two chains having an in-chain extended Coulomb interaction reaching to third neighbor and coupled by inter-chain hopping. Within our short numerical coherence lengths, typically reaching ten to twenty sites, we find a strong renormalization of the interchain hopping and the existence of a dimensional crossover at smaller interactions. We also find power exponents for single-particle hoppi…
The system of interacting spinless fermions hopping on a two-leg ladder exhibits a series of quantum phase transitions when subjected to an external magnetic field. At half filling, these are either U(1) Gaussian phase transitions between two phases with distinct types of long-range order or Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions between ordered and gapless phases.
We introduce a class of spinless fermion models that exhibit quantum many-body scars (QMBS) originating from kinetic constraints in the form of density-assisted hopping. The models can be defined on any lattice in any dimension and allow for spatially varying interactions. We construct a tower of exact eigenstates with finite energy density, and we demonstrate that these QMBS are responsible for the nonthermal nature of the system by studying the entanglement entropy and correlation functions. The quench dynamics from certain initial states is also investigated, and it is confirmed that the QM…
We study the dynamical properties of spinless fermions on the checkerboard lattice. Our main interest is the limit of large nearest-neighbor repulsion $V$ as compared with hopping $|t|$. The spectral functions show broad low-energy excitation which are due to the dynamics of fractionally charged excitations. Furthermore, it is shown that the fractional charges contribute to the electrical current density.
We compare the groundstate energies of bosons and fermions with the same form of the Hamiltonian. If both are noninteracting, the groundstate energy of bosons is always lower, owing to Bose-Einstein Condensation. However, the comparison is nontrivial when bosons do interact. We first prove that, when the hopping is unfrustrated (all the hopping amplitudes are non-negative), hard-core bosons still must have a lower groundstate energy than the fermions. When the hopping is frustrated, bosons can have higher groundstate energy than fermions. We prove rigorously that this inversion indeed occurs i…
A spinless two-band model is studied in infinite dimension limit. Starting from the atomic limit, the formal exact solution of the model is obtained by means a perturbative treatment of the hopping and hybridisation terms. The model is solved in closed form in high dimensions assuming no local spin fluctuations. The non-Fermi liquid properties appearing in the metallic phase are analysed through the behaviour of the density of states and the self-energy near the Fermi level.
Exploring supersolidity in naturally occurring and artificially designed systems has been and will continue to be an area of immense interest. Here, we study how superfluid and charge-density-wave (CDW) states cooperate or compete in a minimal model for hard-core-bosons (HCBs) coupled locally to optical phonons: a two-dimensional Bose-Holstein model. Our study is restricted to the parameter regimes of strong HCB-phonon coupling and non-adiabaticity. We use Quantum Monte Carlo simulation (involving stochastic-series-expansion technique) to study phase transitions and to investigate whether we h…
What kind of lattice Hamiltonian manifestly has an ordered state with spontaneous orbital currents? We consider interacting spinless fermions on an array of square plaquettes, connected by weak hopping; the array geometry may be a 2 x 2L ladder, a 2 x 2 x 2L "tube", or a 2L x 2L square grid. At half filling, we derive an effective Hamiltonian in terms of pseudospins, of which one component represents orbital currents, and find the conditions sufficient for orbital current long-range order. We consider spinfull variants of the aforesaid spinless models and make contact with other spinfull model…
We study a half filled ladder of spinless fermions. We show that contrarily to a single chain, the ladder becomes a Mott insulator for arbitrarily small repulsive interactions. We obtain the full phase diagram and physical quantities such as the charge gap. We show that there is only a single insulating phase for repulsive interactions, regardless of the stength of the interchain hopping and single chain Mott gap. There is thus no confinement-deconfinement transition in this system but a simple crossover. We show that upon doping the system becomes a Luttinger liquid with a universal parameter…
The Hubbard model is used to study an electronic system at half filling. Starting from a functional integral representation the spin-up Grassmann field is integrated out. It is shown that the resulting spinless fermion theory has an instantaneous cluster interaction, and that the spinless fermions are coupled to thermally fluctuating Ising spins. The coupling parameter of the spinless fermion interaction is a product of the Hubbard interaction and the hopping rate. As an example the strongly metallic as well as the strongly insulating regime are investigated in terms of the effective Ising sta…
I investigate the superconductivity of the three-band $t$-$J$-$U$ model derived from the three-band Hubbard model using the Schrieffer-Wolff transformation. My model is designed considering the hole-doped high-$T_{\mathrm{c}}$ superconducting cup-rate. The model does not exclude the double occupancy of Cu sites by $d$ electrons, and there is a pair-hopping interaction between the $d$ and $p$ bands together with the exchange interaction. I analyse the superconducting transition temperature, electronic state, and superconducting gap function based on strong coupling theory and find that the supe…
We study ground state properties and particle excitation spectra across a commensurate charge density wave transition in a system of strongly interacting fermions, using series expansion methods and mean-field theory. We consider a 1/3-filled system of spinless fermions on a triangular-lattice, with hopping parameter $t$, nearest-neighbor repulsion $V$, and a sublattice dependent chemical potential $μ_s$. The phase transition is found to be first order for $μ_s=0$, but becomes continuous with increasing $μ_s$. The particle and hole excitation spectra exhibit dramatic changes in the vicinity of…
Two-dimensional spinless Falicov-Kimball model (FKM) with correlated hopping is studied perturbatively in the limit of large on-site Coulomb interaction $U$. In the neutral case the effective Hamiltonian in spin variables is derived up to terms proportional to $U^{-3}$. Unlike the simplest FKM case, it contains odd parity terms (resulting from the correlated hopping) in addition to even parity ones. The ground-state phase diagram of the effective Hamiltonian is examined in the $(a/t, h)$ plane, where $a/t$ is a parameter characterizing strength of the correlated hopping and $h$ is a difference…
We use exact diagonalization and cluster perturbation theory to address the role of strong interactions and quantum fluctuations for spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice. We find quantum fluctuations to be very pronounced both at weak and strong interactions. A weak second-neighbor Coulomb repulsion $V_2$ induces a tendency toward an interaction-generated quantum anomalous Hall phase, as borne out in mean-field theory. However, quantum fluctuations prevent the formation of a stable quantum Hall phase before the onset of the charge-modulated phase predicted at large $V_2$ by mean-field th…
We investigate the local density of states of the one-dimensional half-filled spinless fermion model with nearest-neighbor hopping t>0 and interaction V in its Luttinger liquid phase -2t < V <= 2t. The bulk density of states and the local density of states in open chains are calculated over the full band width 4t with an energy resolution <= 0.08t using the dynamical density-matrix renormalization group (DDMRG) method. We also perform DDMRG simulations with a resolution of 0.01t around the Fermi energy to reveal the power-law behaviour predicted by the Luttinger liquid theory for bulk and boun…
Fermions hopping on a hexagonal lattice represent one of the most active research field in condensed matter since the discovery of graphene in 2004 and its numerous applications. Another exciting aspect of the interplay between geometry and quantum mechanical effects is given by the Haldane model (F. D. M. Haldane, Phys. Rev. Lett. 61, 2015 (1988)) where spinless fermions experiencing a certain flux pattern on the honeycomb lattice leads to the stabilization of a topological phase of matter, distinct from a Mott insulator and dubbed Chern insulator nowadays. In this context, it is crucial to u…
We study the phase diagram and the total polarization distribution of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with nearest neighbor interaction in one dimension at half-filling. To obtain the ground state wave-function, we extend the Baeriswyl variational wave function to account for alternating hopping parameters. The ground state energies of the variational wave functions compare well to exact diagonalization results. For the case of uniform hopping for all bonds, where it is known that an ideal conductor to insulator transition takes place at finite interaction, we also find a transition at an inter…
The single-particle hopping between two chains is investigated by exact-diagonalizations techniques supplemented by finite-size scaling analysis. In the case of two coupled strongly-correlated chains of spinless fermions, the Taylor expansion of the expectation value of the single-particle interchain hopping operator of an electron at momentum k_F in powers of the interchain hopping t_perp is shown to become unstable in the thermodynamic limit. In the regime alpha<alpha_{tp} (alpha_{tp} simeq 0.41) where transverse two-particle hopping is less relevant than single-particle hopping, the finite-…
The linear perturbation renormalization group is used to study spinless two-band fermion chains at half-filling. The model consists of two species of spinless fermions, namely localized f and extended p, and it takes into account the following: the kinetic energy of fermions p, the on-site Coulomb repulsion V between p and f fermions, chemical potentials μp and μf adjusted in such a way that the average of the site occupation = 1, and a weak interchain hopping tx . The average occupation number, the specific heat, and the correlation functions are studied as functions of temperature. For a sin…
We study the two-band model of spinless fermions in one dimension for weak repulsive interactions. In this case, the model is equivalent to the weakly interacting spinless two-leg ladder. We obtain analytic expressions for the superconducting pairing correlation function and the charge density correlation function, which show, that a finite interchain hopping t_p results in dominant superconductivity for repulsive interactions (for vanishing t_p, we recover previous results). We furthermore find that the transition from the superconducting phase to the usual one-dimensional (Luttinger) metal a…
We investigate the effect of a next-nearest neighbor hopping integral t' in the 1D t-J model, using Lanczos diagonalization of finite chains. Surprisingly, even moderate values of t' have a quite dramatic effect on the dynamical correlation functions and Fermi surface volume. The `holon' becomes diffuse and overdamped, the band structure near the Fermi energy is dominated by t'. Most importantly, however, with increasing hole concentration the system undergoes a phase transition from a `hole pocket' Fermi surface, where k_F corresponds to the number of holes rather than electrons, to a high do…
We compute the phase diagram of a one-dimensional model of spinless fermions with pair-hopping and nearest-neighbor interaction, first introduced by Ruhman and Altman, using the density-matrix renormalization group combined with various analytical approaches. Although the main phases are a Luttinger liquid of fermions and a Luttinger liquid of pairs, we also find remarkable phases in which only a fraction of the fermions are paired. In such case, two situations arise: either fermions and pairs coexist spatially in a two-fluid mixture, or they are spatially segregated leading to phase separatio…
We show the stabilization of two trimer phases in a chain of spinless fermions with a correlated hopping term. A trimer fluid forms due to a gain in trimer kinetic energy and competes with a fluid of unbound fermions. Furthermore, we observe two intermediate phases where these two fluids coexist and do not spatially separate. Depending on the way trimers are created out of the Fermi sea, hybridization can occur, in which case the onset of correlations between the two fluids is well captured by a generalized BCS ansatz. These results are finally extended to the formation of larger multimers, wh…
The low energy properties of different one-dimensional fermionic lattice models are investigated using the bosonization technique. We attach much importance to a proper consideration of the Klein factors which are neglected or inaccurately treated in the majority of the literature. In order to deal with the nonlinear terms, arising from the dimerization or similar scattering processes, we use the self-consistent harmonic approximation (SCHA), a variational method where the nonlinearities are replaced by a quadratic potential. We construct an extension of the SCHA in order to account for the ex…
By removing one empty site between two occupied sites, we map the ground states of chains of hardcore bosons and spinless fermions with infinite nearest-neighbor repulsion to ground states of chains of hardcore bosons and spinless fermions without nearest-neighbor repulsion respectively, and ultimately in terms of the one-dimensional Fermi sea. We then introduce the intervening-particle expansion, where we write correlation functions in such ground states as a systematic sum over conditional expectations, each of which can be ultimately mapped to a one-dimensional Fermi-sea expectation. Variou…
Recently, we demonstrated rigorously the stability of charge-stripe phases in quantum-particle systems that are described by extended Falicov-Kimball Hamiltonians, with the quantum hopping particles being either spinless fermions or hardcore bosons. In this paper, by means of the same methods, we show that any anisotropy of nearest-neighbor hopping eliminates the $π/2$-rotation degeneracy of the so called dimeric and axial-stripe phases and orients them in the direction of a weaker hopping. Moreover, due to the same anisotropy the obtained phase diagrams of fermions show a tendency to become s…
We study the t-J model with the inclusion of the so called three-site term which comes out from the t/U --> 0 expansion of the Hubbard model. We find that this singlet pair hopping term has no qualitative effect on the structure of the pure mean field phase diagram for nonmagnetic states. In accordance with experimental data on high-T_c materials and some numerical studies, we also find wide regions of phase coexistence whenever the coupling J is greater than a critical value J_c. We show that J_c varies linearly with the temperature T, going to zero at T=0.
An unexpected feature common to 2H-transition metal dichalcogenides (2H-TMDs) is revealed with first-principles Wannier functions analysis of the electronic structure of the prototype 2H-TaSe2: The low-energy Ta \red{``$5d_{z^2}$''} bands governing the physics of charge-density wave (CDW) is dominated by hopping between next-nearest neighbors. With this motivation we develop a minimal effective model for the CDW formation, in which the unusual form of the hopping leads to an approximate decoupling of the three sublattices. In the CDW phase one sublattice remains undistorted, leaving the bands …
It is known that many-body correlations qualitatively modify the properties of a one-dimensional metal. However, for a quasi-one-dimensional metal these correlations are suppressed, at least partially. We study conditions under which the one-dimensional effects significantly influence the dimensional crossover of a quasi-one-dimensional metal. It is proved (i) that even a system with very high anisotropy of the single-particle hopping might behave on both sides of the crossover as an ordinary weakly non-ideal Fermi gas. Further, (ii) to demonstrate well-developed signatures of one-dimensional …
We present a comprehensive study of two of the most experimentally relevant extensions of Kitaev's spinless model of a 1D p-wave superconductor: those involving (i) longer range hopping and superconductivity and (ii) inhomogeneous potentials. We commence with a pedagogical review of the spinless model and, as a means of characterizing topological phases exhibited by the systems studied here, we introduce bulk topological invariants as well as those derived from an explicit consideration of boundary modes. In time-reversal invariant systems, we find that the longer range hopping leads to topolo…
One-particle interchain hopping in a system of coupled Luttinger liquids is investigated by use of exact diagonalizations techniques. Firstly, the two chain problem of spinless fermions is studied in order to see the behaviour of the band splitting as a function of the exponent αwhich characterizes the 1D Luttinger liquid. We give numerical evidence that inter-chain coherent hopping (defined by a non-vanishing splitting) can be totally suppressed for α\sim 0.4 or even smaller αvalues. The transverse conductivity is shown to exhibit a strong incoherent part even when coherent inter-chain hoppin…
We investigate effects of doped holes' hopping on Neel order in the two-dimensional Hubbard model. Semiclassical staggered moments are computed by solving saddle point equations derived from a path-integral formalism. Effects of quantum fluctuations are taken into account by the Schwinger boson mean field theory. We argue that hopping of doped holes is ineffective in suppressing Neel order compared to rapid supprestion of Neel order in high-temperature superconductors. After destruction of Neel order, the quantum disordered phase sets in. Taking the strong coupling limit in the quantum disorde…
The system of interacting spinless fermions hopping on a two-leg ladder in the presence of an external magnetic field is shown to possess a long range order: the bond density wave or the staggered flux phase. In both cases the elementary excitations are $Z_2$ kinks and carry one half the charge of an electron.
We discuss the $t$-$J$-$U$ model in the mean-field approximation. The role of spin-exchange coupling $J$ and the second nearest hopping $t'$ are examined in the context of the coexistence of superconductivity (SC) and antiferromagnetism (AF). Stability of the phases is studied with respect to temperature. The coexistence region exists for the sufficiently large Coulomb repulsion ($U>U_{cr}$), and in the vicinity of the half-filled band (hole doping $δ< δ_{cr}$). The critical hole doping is relatively small ($δ_{cr} \approx 0.006$ for $J/|t| = 1/3$) and linear with respect to $J$. The decrease …
We theoretically investigate Majorana zero modes emerging in an anisotropic XY spin chain with second neighbor interactions. The spin chain is mathematically equivalent to the Kitaev chain composing of spinless fermions if only nearest-neighbor interactions are considered. Recent studies on the Kitaev chain with long-ranged interactions, have presented coexistence of several Majorana zero modes. Investigating the topological phase diagram of the anisotropic XY spin chain with second neighbor interactions, we find coexistence of several Majorana zero modes similar to the Kitaev chain. However, …
We study a system composed of fermions (electrons), hopping on a square lattice, and of immobile particles (ions), that is described by the spinless Falicov-Kimball Hamiltonian augmented by a next-nearest-neighbor attractive interaction between the ions (a nearest-neighbor repulsive interaction between the ions can be included and does not alter the results). A part of the grand-canonical phase diagram of this system is constructed rigorously, when the coupling between the electrons and ions is much stronger than the hopping intensity of electrons. The obtained diagram implies that, at least f…
We report density-matrix renormalization group calculations of spin gaps in the quarter-filled correlated two-leg rectangular ladder with bond-dimerization along the legs of the ladder. In the small rung-coupling region, dimerization along the leg bonds can lead to large enhancement of the spin gap. Electron-electron interactions further enhance the spin gap, which is nonzero for all values of the rung electron hopping and for arbitrarily small bond-dimerization. Very large spin gaps, as are found experimentally in quarter-filled band organic charge-transfer solids with coupled pairs of quasi-…
We study the localization problem of one-dimensional interacting spinless fermions in an incommensurate optical lattice, which changes from an extended phase to a nonergoic many-body localized phase by increasing the strength of the incommensurate potential. We identify that there exists an intermediate regime before the system enters the many-body localized phase, in which both the localized and extended many-body states coexist, thus the system is divided into three different phases, which can be characterized by normalized participation ratios of the many-body eigenstates and distributions …
Charge and spin-Peierls instabilities in quarter-filled (n=1/2) compounds consisting of coupled ladders and/or zig-zag chains are investigated. Hubbard and t-J models including local Holstein and/or Peierls couplings to the lattice are studied by numerical techniques. Next nearest neighbor hopping and magnetic exchange, and short-range Coulomb interactions are also considered. We show that, generically, these systems undergo instabilities towards the formation of Charge Density Waves, Bond Order Waves and (generalized) spin-Peierls modulated structures. Moderate electron-electron and electron-…
Using a dynamic cluster quantum Monte Carlo approximation, we study a two-dimensional Hubbard model with a small orthorhombic distortion in the nearest neighbor hopping integrals. We find a large nematic response in the low-frequency single-particle scattering rate which develops with decreasing temperature and doping as the pseudogap region is entered. At the same time, the d-wave superconducting gap function develops an s-wave component and its amplitude becomes anisotropic. The strength of the pairing correlations, however, is found to be unaffected by the strong anisotropy, indicating that…
We discuss the metal-insulator transition of the spinless fermion model on the Kagomé lattice at 1/3-filling. The system is analyzed using exact diagonalization, the density-matrix renormalization group methods and the random phase approximation. In the strong-coupling region, the charge-ordered ground state is consistent with the predictions of the effective model with a plaquette order. We find that the qualitative properties of the metal-insulator transition are totally different depending on the sign of the hopping integrals, reflecting the difference of band structure at the Fermi level.
We show using bosonization techniques, that strong forward scattering interactions between one dimensional spinless Luttinger liquids (LL) can stabilize a phase where charge-density wave, superconducting and transverse single particle hopping perturbations are irrelevant. This new phase retains its LL like properties in the directions of the chains, but with relations between exponents modified by the transverse interactions, whereas, it is a perfect insulator in the transverse direction. The mechanism that stabilizes this phase are strong transverse charge density wave fluctuations at incomme…
In the present paper, we study a system of doped antiferromagnet in three dimensions at finite temperatures by using the t-J model, a canonical model of strongly-correlated electrons. We employ the slave-fermion representation of electrons in which an electron is described as a composite of a charged spinless holon and a chargeless spinon. We introduce two kinds of U(1) gauge fields on links as auxiliary fields, one describing resonating valence bonds of antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor spin pairs and the other for nearest-neighbor hopping amplitudes of holons and spinons in the ferromagneti…
We examine a basic lattice model of interacting fermions that exhibits quadratic band crossing points (QBCPs) in the non-interacting limit. In particular, we consider spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice with nearest neighbor hopping $t$ and third-nearest neighbor hopping $t''$, which exhibits fine-tuned QBCPs at the corners of the Brillouin zone for ${t'' = t/2}$. In this situation, the density of states remains finite at the Fermi level of the half-filled band and repulsive nearest-neighbor interactions $V$ lead to a charge-density-wave (CDW) instability at infinitesimally small $V$ in…
Using a non-perturbative functional renormalization group approach involving both fermionic and bosonic fields we calculate the interaction-induced change of the Fermi surface of spinless fermions moving on two chains connected by weak interchain hopping t_{bot}. We show that interchain backscattering can strongly reduce the distance Delta between the Fermi momenta associated with the bonding and the antibonding band, corresponding to a large reduction of the effective interchain hopping t_{bot}^{*} A self-consistent one-loop approximation neglecting marginal vertex corrections and wave-functi…
A model of strongly correlated spinless fermions hopping on a checkerboard lattice is mapped onto a quantum fully-packed loop model. We identify a large number of fluctuationless states specific to the fermionic case. We also show that for a class of fluctuating states, the fermionic sign problem can be gauged away. This claim is supported by numerically evaluating the energies of the low-lying states. Furthermore, we analyze in detail the excitations at the Rokhsar-Kivelson point of this model thereby using the relation to the height model and the single-mode approximation.
