The relation between the Kondo spin relaxation rate $ {τ_{sK}}^{-1} $ and the Kondo momentum relaxation rate $ {τ_{eK}}^{-1} $ is explored by using nonlocal spin valves with submicron copper channels that contain dilute iron impurities. A linear relation between $ {τ_{sK}}^{-1} $ and $ {τ_{eK}}^{-1} $ is established under varying temperatures. However, under varying impurity concentrations, ${τ_{sK}}^{-1}$ remains nearly constant despite variation of $ {τ_{eK}}^{-1} $ by a factor of 10. This surprising relation can be understood by considering spin relaxation through overlapping Kondo screening clouds and supports the physical existence of the elusive Kondo clouds.
We study a spin S=M/2--Kondo system coupled to electrons in an arbitrary nonequilibrium situation above Kondo temperature. Coupling to hot electrons leads to an increased inverse lifetime of pseudo particles, related to the Korringa width. This in turn is responsible for the increased inelastic relaxation rates of the electronic system. The rates are related to spin--spin correlation functions which are determined using a projection operator formalism. The results generalize recent findings for S=1/2--Kondo impurities which have been used to describe energy relaxation experiments in disordered…
We have used normal metal-insulator-superconductor tunnel junctions as thermometers at sub-Kelvin temperatures to study the electron-phonon (e-p) interaction in thin Aluminum films doped with Manganese, as a function of Manganese concentration. Mn in Al is known to be a Kondo impurity with extremely high Kondo temperature $T_K \sim$ 500 K, thus our results probe the e-p coupling in the fully spin compensated, unitary limit. The temperature dependence of the e-p interaction is consistent with the existing theory for disordered metals, however full theory including the Kondo effect has not been …
We study the energy distribution function of quasiparticles in voltage biased mesoscopic wires in presence of magnetic impurities and applied magnetic field. The system is described by a Boltzmann equation where the collision integral is determined by coupling to spin 1/2 impurities. We derive an effective coupling to a dissipative spin system which is valid well above Kondo temperature in equilibrium or for sufficiently smeared distribution functions in non-equilibrium. For low magnetic field an enhancement of energy relaxation is found whereas for larger magnetic fields the energy relaxation…
The temperature dependence of the spin diffusion length typically reflects the scattering mechanism responsible for spin relaxation. Within non-magnetic metals it is reasonable to expect the Elliot-Yafet mechanism to play a role and thus the temperature dependence of the spin diffusion length might be inversely proportional to resistivity. In lateral spin valves measurements have found that at low temperatures the spin diffusion length unexpected decreases. By measuring the transport properties of lateral Py/Cu/Py spin valves fabricated with different purities of Cu, we extract a spin diffusio…
We study the effects of the Coulomb interaction in the one dimensional Kondo lattice model on the phase diagram, the static magnetic susceptibility and electron spin relaxation. We show that onsite Coulomb interaction supports ferromagnetic order and nearest neighbor Coulomb interaction drives, depending on the electron filling, either a paramagnetic or ferromagnetic order. Furthermore we calculate electron quasiparticle life times, which can be related to electron spin relaxation and decoherence times, and explain their dependence on the strength of interactions and the electron filling in or…
We investigate the spin relaxation and Kondo resistivity caused by magnetic impurities in doped transition metal dichalcogenides monolayers. We show that momentum and spin relaxation times due to the exchange interaction by magnetic impurities, are much longer when the Fermi level is inside the spin split region of the valence band. In contrast to the spin relaxation, we find that the dependence of Kondo temperature $T_K$ on the doping is not strongly affected by the spin-orbit induced splitting, although only one of the spin species are present at each valley. This result, which is obtained u…
In diffusive Cu and Au quantum wires at finite transport voltage $U$ the non-equilibrium distribution function $f(E,U)$ exhibits scaling behavior, $f(E,U)=f(E/eU)$, indicating anomalous energy relaxation processes in these wires. We show that in nonequilibrium the Kondo effect, generated either by magnetic impurities (single-channel Kondo effect) or possibly by non-magnetic, degenerate two-level systems (two-channel Kondo effect), produces such scaling behavior as a consequence of a Korringa-like (pseudo)spin relaxation rate $\propto U$ and of damped powerlaw behavior of the impurity spectral …
Using a nonequilibrium renormalization group method we study the real-time evolution of spin and current in the anisotropic Kondo model (both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic) at finite magnetic field $h_0$ and bias voltage $V$. We derive analytic expressions for all times in the weak-coupling regime $\max\{V,h_0,1/t\}\gg T_c$ ($T_c=$ strong coupling scale). We find that all observables decay both with the spin relaxation and decoherence rates $Γ_{1/2}$. Various $V$-dependent logarithmic, oscillatory, and power-law contributions are predicted. The low-energy cutoff of logarithmic terms is g…
We report on a Kondo correlated quantum dot connected to two-dimensional leads where we demonstrate the renormalization of the g-factor in the pure Zeeman case i.e, for magnetic fields parallel to the plane of the quantum dot. For the same system we study the influence of orbital effects by investigating the quantum Hall regime i.e. a perpendicular magnetic field is applied. In this case an unusual behaviour of the suppression of the Kondo effect and of the split zero-bias anomaly is observed. The splitting decreases with magnetic field and shows discontinuous changes which are attributed to t…
We propose a probe based on nuclear relaxation and Knight shift measurements for the Kondo scenario for the "0.7 feature" in semiconductor quantum point contact (QPC) devices. We show that the presence of a bound electron in the QPC would lead to a much higher rate of nuclear relaxation compared to nuclear relaxation through exchange of spin with conduction electrons. Furthermore, we show that the temperature dependence of this nuclear relaxation is very non-monotonic as opposed to the linear-T relaxation from coupling with conduction electrons. We present a qualitative analysis for the additi…
The Kondo effect is a cornerstone in the study of strongly correlated fermions. The coherent exchange coupling of conduction electrons to local magnetic moments gives rise to a Kondo cloud that screens the impurity spin. Whereas complete Kondo screening has been explored widely, realizations of the underscreened scenario - where only some of several Kondo channels participate in the screening - remain rare. Here we report the observation of fully screened and underscreened Kondo effects in quantum dots in bilayer graphene. More generally, we introduce a unique platform for studying Kondo physi…
We study the energy relaxation of quasiparticles in voltage biased mesoscopic wires in presence of magnetic impurities. The renormalization of the exchange interaction of Kondo impurities coupled to conduction electrons is extended to the case of a nonequilibrium electron distribution, which is determined self-consistently from a Boltzmann equation with a collision term due to Kondo impurity mediated electron-electron scattering. The approach leads to predictions in quantitative agreement with recent experiments by Pothier et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 3490 (1997)].
We investigate the effects of voltage induced spin-relaxation in a quantum dot in the Kondo regime. Using nonequilibrium perturbation theory, we determine the joint effect of self-energy and vertex corrections to the conduction electron T-matrix in the limit of transport voltage much larger than temperature. The logarithmic divergences, developing near the different chemical potentials of the leads, are found to be cut off by spin-relaxation rates, implying that the nonequilibrium Kondo-problem remains at weak coupling as long as voltage is much larger than the Kondo temperature.
Motivated by recent experiments on molecular quantum dots we investigate the relaxation of pure spin states when coupled to metallic leads. Under suitable conditions these systems are well described by a ferromagnetic Kondo model. Using two recently developed theoretical approaches, the time-dependent numerical renormalization group and an extended ow equation method, we calculate the real-time evolution of a Kondo spin into its partially screened steady state. We obtain exact analytical results which agree well with numerical implementations of both methods. Analytical expressions for the ste…
We investigate the time-dependent Kondo effect in a single-molecule magnet (SMM) strongly coupled to metallic electrodes. Describing the SMM by a Kondo model with large spin S > 1/2, we analyze the underscreening of the local moment and the effect of anisotropy terms on the relaxation dynamics of the magnetization. Underscreening by single-channel Kondo processes leads to a logarithmically slow relaxation, while finite uniaxial anisotropy causes a saturation of the SMM's magnetization. Additional transverse anisotropy terms induce quantum spin tunneling and a pseudospin-1/2 Kondo effect sensit…
Magnetic frustrations can enhance quantum zero-point motion in spin systems and lead to exotic topological insulating states. When coupled to mobile electrons, they may lead to unusual non-Fermi liquid or metallic spin liquid states whose nature has not been well explored. Here, we propose a spin current Kondo mechanism underlying a series of non-Fermi liquid phases on the border of Kondo and magnetic phases in a frustrated three-impurity Kondo model. This mechanism is confirmed by renormalization group analysis and describes movable Kondo singlets called "holons" induced by an effective coupl…
We study dynamic polarization and resistive detection of nuclear spins in a semiconductor quantum dot (QD) under the Kondo effect regime. We find that the differential conductance spectra of the QD exhibit hysteresis under the Kondo effect regime in magnetic fields. Relevance of nuclear spins to the hysteresis is confirmed by the detection of nuclear magnetic resonance signals by monitoring the differential conductance. We attribute the origin of the hysteresis to the dynamic nuclear spin polarization (DNP) induced in the QD. Using the DNP, we demonstrate nuclear spin relaxation rate measureme…
We consider the transport properties in an applied magnetic field of the spin S=1/2 Kondo model with ferromagnetic exchange coupling to electronic reservoirs, a description relevant for the strong coupling limit of underscreened spin S=1 Kondo impurities. Because the ferromagnetic Kondo interaction is marginally irrelevant, perturbative methods should prove accurate down to low energies. For the purpose of this study, we use a combination of Majorana diagrammatic theory with Density Matrix Numerical Renormalization Group simulations. In the standard case of antiferromagnetic Kondo exchange, we…
We study nuclear relaxation in the presence of localized electrons in a two-dimensional electron gas in a disordered delta-doped semiconductor heterostructure and show that this method can reliably probe their magnetic interactions and possible long-range order. In contrast, we argue that transport measurements, the commonly employed tool, may not sometimes distinguish between spatial disorder and long-range order. We illustrate the utility of using the nuclear relaxation method to detect long-range order by analyzing a recent proposal made on the basis of transport measurements, on the sponta…
The Kondo effect in quantum dots (QDs) - artificial magnetic impurities - attached to ferromagnetic leads is studied with the numerical renormalization group (NRG) method. It is shown that the QD level is spin-split due to presence of ferromagnetic electrodes, leading to a suppression of the Kondo effect. We find that the Kondo effect can be restored by compensating this splitting with a magnetic field. Although the resulting Kondo resonance then has an unusual spin asymmetry with a reduced Kondo temperature, the ground state is still a locally-screened state, describable by Fermi liquid theor…
When individual quantum spins are placed in close proximity to conducting substrates, the localized spin is coupled to the nearby itinerant conduction electrons via Kondo exchange. In the strong coupling limit this can result in the Kondo effect - the formation of a correlated, many body singlet state - and a resulting renormalization of the density of states near the Fermi energy. However, even when Kondo screening does not occur, Kondo exchange can give rise to a wide variety of other phenomena. In addition to the well known renormalization of the g factor and the finite spin decoherence and…
We investigate the dynamical charge response of the Anderson model viewed as a quantum RC circuit. Applying a low-energy effective Fermi liquid theory, a generalized Korringa-Shiba formula is derived at zero temperature, and the charge relaxation resistance is expressed solely in terms of static susceptibilities which are accessible by Bethe ansatz. We identify a giant charge relaxation resistance at intermediate magnetic fields related to the destruction of the Kondo singlet. The scaling properties of this peak are computed analytically in the Kondo regime. We also show that the resistance pe…
We analyze the nonequilibrium Kondo model at finite voltage and temperature by using a new formulation of the real-time renormalization group method with the Laplace variable as the flow parameter. We evaluate the energy-dependent spin relaxation rate and nonlinear conductance, and derive an approximate form for the universal line shape for the latter in the whole crossover regime from weak to strong coupling. The results are shown to agree well with exact methods in equilibrium, Fermi-liquid theory, weak-coupling expansions, and recent experiments. For the transient spin dynamics we find a un…
The real-time dynamics of a classical spin in an external magnetic field and locally exchange coupled to an extended one-dimensional system of non-interacting conduction electrons is studied numerically. Retardation effects in the coupled electron-spin dynamics are shown to be the source for the relaxation of the spin in the magnetic field. Total energy and spin is conserved in the non-adiabatic process. Approaching the new local ground state is therefore accompanied by the emission of dispersive wave packets of excitations carrying energy and spin and propagating through the lattice with Ferm…
A detailed derivation of the recently proposed time-dependent numerical renormalization-group (TD-NRG) approach to nonequilibrium dynamics in quantum impurity systems is presented. We demonstrate that the method is suitable for fermionic as well as bosonic baths. A comparison with exact analytical results for the charge relaxation in the resonant-level model and for dephasing in the spin-boson model establishes the accuracy of the method. The real-time dynamics of a single spin coupled to both types of baths is investigated. We use the TD-NRG to calculate the spin relaxation and spin precessio…
Following the recent observation of the quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect in HgTe quantum wells, an important issue is to understand the effect of impurities on transport in the QSH regime. Using linear response and renormalization group methods, we calculate the edge conductance of a QSH insulator as a function of temperature in the presence of a magnetic impurity. At high temperatures, Kondo and/or two-particle scattering give rise to a logarithmic temperature dependence. At low temperatures, for weak Coulomb interactions in the edge liquid the conductance is restored to unitarity with unusual …
Scaling and universality in the Ohmic two-state system is investigated by exploiting the equivalence of this model to the anisotropic Kondo model. For the Ohmic two-state system, we find universal scaling functions for the specific heat, $C_α(T)$, static susceptibility, $χ_α(T)$, and spin relaxation function $S_α(ω)$ depending on the reduced temperature $T/Δ_{r}$ (frequency $ω/Δ_{r}$), with $Δ_{r}$ the renormalized tunneling frequency, and uniquely specified by the dissipation strength $α$ ($0<α<1$). The scaling functions can be used to extract $α$ and $Δ_{r}$ in experimental realizations.
We consider an interacting nanowire/superconductor heterostructure attached to metallic leads. The device is described by an unusual low-energy model involving spin-1 conduction electrons coupled to a nonlocal spin-1/2 Kondo impurity built from Majorana fermions. The topological origin of the resulting Kondo effect is manifest in distinctive non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior, and the existence of Majorana fermions in the device is demonstrated unambiguously by distinctive conductance lineshapes. We study the physics of the model in detail, using the numerical renormalization group, perturbative …
The anti-ferromagnetic coupling of a magnetic impurity carrying a spin with the conduction electrons spins of a host metal is the basic mechanism responsible for the increase of the resistance of an alloy such as Cu${}_{0.998}$Fe${}_{0.002}$ at low temperature, as originally suggested by Kondo . This coupling has emerged as a very generic property of localized electronic states coupled to a continuum . The possibility to design artificial controllable magnetic impurities in nanoscopic conductors has opened a path to study this many body phenomenon in unusual situations as compared to the initi…
We present analytic results for the finite-frequency current noise and the nonequilibrium ac conductance for a Kondo quantum dot in presence of a magnetic field. Using the real-time renormalization group method, we determine the line shape close to resonances and show that while all resonances in the ac conductance are broadened by the transverse spin relaxation rate, the noise at finite field additionally involves the longitudinal rate as well as sharp kinks resulting in singular derivatives. Our results provide a consistent theoretical description of recent experimental data for the emission…
We apply a recently developed nonequilibrium real-time renormalization group method in frequency space to describe nonlinear quantum transport through a small fermionic quantum system coupled weakly to several reservoirs via spin and/or orbital fluctuations. We provide an analytic and well-controlled procedure to solve the RG equations in the weak-coupling regime. Within a 2-loop analysis, we derive analytic formulas for the nonlinear conductance and the kernel determining the time evolution of the reduced density matrix. Most importantly, we present a consistent formalism how the RG flow is c…
We investigate the persistent current influenced by the spin fluctuations in a mesoscopic ring weakly coupled to a quantum dot. It is shown that the Kondo effect gives rise to some unusual features of the persistent current in the limit where the charge transfer between two subsystems is suppressed. Various aspects of the crossover from a delocalized to a localized dot limit are discussed in relation with the effect of the coherent response of the Kondo cloud to the Aharonov-Bohm flux.
We describe the mechanism of charge-spin transformation in a double quantum dot (DQD) with even occupation, where a time dependent gate voltage v(t) is applied to one of its two valleys, whereas the other one is coupled to the source and drain electrodes. The Kondo tunneling regime under strong Coulomb blockade may be realized when the spin spectrum of the DQD is formed by the ground state spin triplet and two singlet excitations. Charge fluctuations induced by v(t) result in transitions within the spin multiplet characterized by the SO(5) dynamical symmetry group. In a weakly non-adiabatic re…
We propose a scheme to realize the Kondo model with tunable anisotropy using alkaline-earth atoms in an optical lattice. The new feature of our setup is Floquet engineering of interactions using time-dependent Zeeman shifts, that can be realized either using state-dependent optical Stark shifts or magnetic fields. The properties of the resulting Kondo model strongly depend on the anisotropy of the ferromagnetic interactions. In particular, easy-plane couplings give rise to Kondo singlet formation even though microscopic interactions are all ferromagnetic. We discuss both equilibrium and dynami…
The dynamic spin susceptibility (DSS) has a ubiquitous Lorentzian form in conventional materials with weak spin orbit coupling, whose spectral width characterizes the spin relaxation rate. We show that DSS has an unusual non-Lorentzian form in topological insulators, which are characterized by strong SOC. At zero temperature, the high frequency part of DSS is universal and increases in certain directions as $ω^{d-1}$ with $d=2$ and 3 for surface states and Weyl semimetals, respectively, while for helical edge states, the interactions renormalize the exponent as $d=2K-1$ with $K$ the Luttinger-…
