Real Bruhat cells give an important and well studied stratification of such spaces as $GL_{n+1}$, $Flag_{n+1} = SL_{n+1}/B$, $SO_{n+1}$ and $Spin_{n+1}$. We study the intersections of a top dimensional cell with another cell (for another basis). Such an intersection is naturally identified with a subset of the lower nilpotent group $Lo_{n+1}^{1}$. We are particularly interested in the homotopy type of such intersections. In this paper we define a stratification of such intersections. As a consequence, we obtain a finite CW complex which is homotopically equivalent to the intersection.
We compute the homotopy type for several examples. It turns out that for $n \le 4$ all connected components of such subsets of $Lo_{n+1}^1$ are contractible: we prove this by explicitly constructing the corresponding CW complexes. Conversely, for $n \ge 5$ and the top permutation, there is always a connected component with even Euler characteristic, and therefore not contractible. This follows from formulas for the number of cells per dimension of the corresponding CW complex. For instance, for the top permutation $S_6$, there exists a connected component with Euler characteristic equal to $2$. We also give an example of a permutation in $S_6$ for which there exists a connected component which is homotopically equivalent to the circle $S^1$.
In a companion manuscript, we introduce a stratification of intersections of a top dimensional real Bruhat cells with another arbitrary cell. This intersection is naturally identified with a subset of the lower triangular group: these subsets are labeled by elements of a finite group, the lift to the spin group of the intersection of a Coxeter group with the special orthogonal group. The stratification allows us to determine the homotopy type of the intersection. In this work we give more examples, particularly detailing the computation of the intersection of two open Bruhat cells in general p…
Let $X$ a complex projective variety of complex dimension $n$ with only isolated singularities of simply connected links. We show that we can endow the rational cohomology of the family of the $\overline{p}$-perverse intersection spaces $\{ I^{\overline{p}}X \}$ with compatible mixed Hodge structures.
Banagl's method of intersection spaces allows to modify certain types of stratified pseudomanifolds near the singular set in such a way that the rational Betti numbers of the modified spaces satisfy generalized Poincaré duality in analogy with Goresky-MacPherson's intersection homology. In the case of one isolated singularity, we show that the duality isomorphism comes from a nondegenerate intersection pairing which depends on the choice of a chain representative of the fundamental class of the regular stratum. On the technical side, we use piecewise linear polynomial differential forms due to…
A homotopical treatment of intersection cohomology recently developed by Chataur-Saralegui-Tanré associates a "perverse algebraic model" to every topological pseudomanifold, extending Sullivan's presentation of rational homotopy to intersection cohomology. In this context, there is a notion of "intersection-formality", measuring the vanishing of Massey products in intersection cohomology. In the present paper, we study the perverse algebraic model of complex projective varieties with isolated singularities. We endow such invariant with natural mixed Hodge structures. This allows us to prove so…
We investigate various homotopy invariant formulations of commutative algebra in the context of rational homotopy theory. The main subject is the complete intersection condition, where we show that a growth condition implies a structure theorem and that modules have multiply periodic resolutions.
In this paper we represent the Vassiliev model for the homotopy type of the one-point compactification of subspace arrangements as a homotopy colimit of an appropriate diagram over the nerve complex of the intersection semilattice of the arrangement. Furthermore, using a generalization of simplicial collapses to diagrams of topological spaces over simplicial complexes, we construct an explicit deformation retraction from the Vassiliev model to the Ziegler-Zivaljevic model.
We show that the intersection of three subgroups in a free group is related to the computation of the third homotopy group $π_3$. This generalizes a result of Gutierrez-Ratcliffe who relate the intersection of two subgroups with the computation of $π_2$. Let $K$ be a two-dimensional CW-complex with subcomplexes $K_1,K_2,K_3$ such that $K=K_1\cup K_2\cup K_3$ and $K_1\cap K_2\cap K_3$ is the 1-skeleton $K^1$ of $K$. We construct a natural homomorphism of $π_1(K)$-modules $$ π_3(K)\to \frac{R_1\cap R_2\cap R_3}{[R_1,R_2\cap R_3][R_2,R_3\cap R_1][R_3,R_1\cap R_2]}, $$ where $R_i=ker\{π_1(K^1)\to …
Let X be a pseudomanifold. In this text, we use a simplicial blow-up to define a cochain complex whose cohomology with coefficients in a field, is isomorphic to the intersection cohomology of X, introduced by M. Goresky and R. MacPherson. We do it simplicially in the setting of a filtered version of face sets, also called simplicial sets without degeneracies, in the sense of C.P. Rourke and B.J. Sanderson. We define perverse local systems over filtered face sets and intersection cohomology with coefficients in a perverse local system. In particular, as announced above when X is a pseudomanifol…
We give homotopy invariant definitions corresponding to three well known properties of complete intersections, for the ring, the module theory and the endomorphisms of the residue field, and we investigate them for the mod p cochains on a space, showing that suitable versions of the second and third are equivalent and that the first is stronger. We are particularly interested in classifying spaces of groups, and we give a number of examples. This paper follows on from arXiv:0906.4025 which considered the classical case of a commutative ring and arXiv:0906.3247 which considered the case of rati…
We introduce the (general) homotopy groups of spheres as link invariants for Brunnian-type links through the investigations on the intersection subgroup of the normal closures of the meridians of strongly nonsplittable links. The homotopy groups measure the difference between the intersection subgroup and symmetric commutator subgroup of the normal closures of the meridians and give the invariants of the links obtained in this way. Moreover the higher homotopy-group invariants can produce some links that could not be detected by the Milnor invariants. Furthermore all homotopy groups of spheres…
Intersection homology is a topological invariant which detects finer information in a space than ordinary homology. Using ideas from classical simple homotopy theory, we construct local combinatorial transformations on simplicial complexes under which intersection homology remains invariant. In particular, we obtain the notions of stratified formal deformations and stratified spines of a complex, leading to reductions of complexes prior to computation of intersection homology. We implemented the algorithmic execution of such transformations, as well as the calculation of intersection homology,…
A number of compactifications familiar in complex-analytic geometry, in particular, the Baily-Borel compactification and its toroidal variants, as well as the Deligne-Mumford compactifications, can be covered by open subsets whose nonempty intersections are Eilenberg-MacLane spaces. We exploit this fact to describe the (rational) homotopy type of these spaces and the natural maps between them in terms of the simplicial sets attached to certain categories. We thus generalize an old result of Charney-Lee on the Baily-Borel compactification of A_g and recover (and rephrase) a more recent one of E…
Let $\mathcal{A} $ be a complexified-real arrangement of lines in $\mathbb{C}^2.$ Let $H$ be any line in $ \mathcal{A} $. Then, form a new complexified-real arrangement $ \mathcal{B}_H = \mathcal{A} \cup \mathcal{C} $ where $ \mathcal{C} \cup \{H\} $ is a pencil of lines with multiplicity $ m\geq 3 $, the intersection point in the pencil is not a multiple point in $ \mathcal{A}, $ and every line in $ \mathcal{C} $ intersects every line in $ \mathcal{A}\setminus \{H\} $ in points of multiplicity two. In this article, we show that for $ H_1, H_2 \in \mathcal{A} $ we may have that $ \mathcal{B}_{…
We derive conditions under which the reconstruction of a target space is topologically correct via the Čech complex or the Vietoris-Rips complex obtained from possibly noisy point cloud data. We provide two novel theoretical results. First, we describe sufficient conditions under which any non-empty intersection of finitely many Euclidean balls intersected with a positive reach set is contractible, so that the Nerve theorem applies for the restricted Čech complex. Second, we demonstrate the homotopy equivalence of a positive $μ$-reach set and its offsets. Applying these results to the restrict…
In this paper, we initiate a study of motivic homotopy theory at infinity. We use the six functor formalism to give an intrinsic definition of the stable motivic homotopy type at infinity of an algebraic variety. Our main computational tools include cdh-descent for normal crossing divisors, Euler classes, Gysin maps, and homotopy purity. Under $\ell$-adic realization, the motive at infinity recovers a formula for vanishing cycles due to Rapoport-Zink; similar results hold for Steenbrink's limiting Hodge structures and Wildeshaus' boundary motives. Under the topological Betti realization, the s…
A virtual string is a scheme of self-intersections of a closed curve on a surface. We study algebraic invariants of strings as well as two equivalence relations on the set of strings: homotopy and cobordism. We show that the homotopy invariants of strings form an infinite dimensional Lie group. We also discuss connections between virtual strings and virtual knots.
