In this paper we study algebras with trace and their trace polynomial identities over a field of characteristic 0. We consider two commutative matrix algebras: $D_2$, the algebra of $2\times 2$ diagonal matrices and $C_2$, the algebra of $2 \times 2$ matrices generated by $e_{11}+e_{22}$ and $e_{12}$. We describe all possible traces on these algebras and we study the corresponding trace codimensions. Moreover we characterize the varieties with trace of polynomial growth generated by a finite dimensional algebra. As a consequence, we see that the growth of a variety with trace is either polynomial or exponential.
We generalize the notion of trace identity to $J$-trace. Our main result is that all $J$-traces of $M_{n,n}$ are consequence of those of degree $\frac12n(n + 3)$. This also gives an indirect description of the queer trace identities of $M_n(E)$.
We show, how the combination of the Cayley-Hamilton theorem and a certain companion matrix construction can be used to derive Z2-graded trace identities in M_{n}(E).
In this paper we study matrix algebras with a degenerate trace in the framework of the theory of polynomial identities. The first part is devoted to the study of the algebra $D_n$ of $n \times n$ diagonal matrices. We prove that, in case of a degenerate trace, all its trace identities follow by the commutativity law and by pure trace identities. Moreover we relate the trace identities of $D_{n+1}$ endowed with a degenerate trace, to those of $D_n$ with the corresponding trace. This allows us to determine the generators of the trace T-ideal of $D_3$. In the second part we study commutative suba…
In this paper, we study almost subnormal subgroups of the general linear group $\GL_n(D)$ of degree $n\ge 1$ over a division ring $D$ that satisfy a generalized power central group identity.
Let $F$ be a field of characteristic zero, $G$ be a group and $R$ be the algebra $M_n(F)$ with a $G$-grading. Bahturin and Drensky proved that if $R$ is an elementary and the neutral component is commutative then the graded identities of $R$ follow from three basic types of identities and monomial identities of length $\geq 2$ bounded by a function $f(n)$ of $n$. In this paper we prove the best upper bound is $f(n)=n$, more generally we prove that all the graded monomial identities of an elementary $G$-grading on $M_n(F)$ follow from those of degree at most $n$. We also study gradings which sa…
In this paper we study non-central almost subnormal subgroups of the multiplicative group of a division ring satisfying a non-zero generalized rational identity. The main result generalizes Chiba's theorem on subnormal subgroups. As an application, we get a theorem on almost subnormal subgroups satisfying a generalized algebraic rational identity. The last theorem has several corollaries which generalize completely or partially some previous results.
We present new identities for determinants of matrices $(A_{i,j})$ with entries $A_{i,j}$ equal to $a_{i,j}$ or $a_{i,0}a_{0,j}-a_{i,j}$, where the $a_{i,j}$'s are indeterminates. We show that these identities are behind trace identities for $SL(2,\Bbb C)$ matrices found earlier by Magnus in his study of trace algebras.
Let $A$ be a centrally closed prime algebra over a characteristic 0 field $k$, and let $q:A\to A$ be the trace of a $d$-linear map (i.e., $q(x)=M(x,...,x)$ where $M:A^d\to A$ is a $d$-linear map). If $[q(x),x]=0$ for every $x\in A$, then $q$ is of the form $q(x) =\sum_{i=0}^{d} μ_i(x)x^i$ where each $μ_i$ is the trace of a $(d-i)$-linear map from $A$ into $k$. For infinite dimensional algebras and algebras of dimension $>d^2$ this was proved by Lee, Lin, Wang, and Wong in 1997. In this paper we cover the remaining case where the dimension is $ \le d^2$. Using this result we are able to handle …
We consider certain functional identities on the matrix algebra $M_n$ that are defined similarly as the trace identities, except that the "coefficients" are arbitrary polynomials, not necessarily those expressible by the traces. The main issue is the question of whether such an identity is a consequence of the Cayley-Hamilton identity. We show that the answer is affirmative in several special cases, and, moreover, for every such an identity $P$ and every central polynomial $c$ with zero constant term there exists $m\in\mathbb{N}$ such that the affirmative answer holds for $c^mP$. In general, h…
We construct six unitary trace invariants for 2 by 2 quaternionic matrices which separate the unitary similarity classes of such matrices, and show that this set is minimal. We prove two quaternionic versions of a well known characterization of triangularizable subalgebras of matrix algebras over an algebraically closed field. Finally we consider the problem of describing the semi-algebraic set of pairs (X,Y) of quaternionic n by n matrices which are simultaneously triangularizable. Even the case n=2, which we analyze in more detail, remains unsolved.
Let $F$ be a finite field of $char F > 3$ and $sl_{2}(F)$ be the Lie algebra of traceless $2\times 2$ matrices over $F$. In this paper, we find a basis for the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-graded identities of $sl_{2}(F)$.
Let K be a field of characteristic 0 and L be a G-graded Lie PI-algebra, where G is a finite group. We define the graded Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of L. Then we measure the growth of the Z_n-graded polynomial identities of the Lie algebra of n x n traceless matrices sl_n(K) giving an exact value of its Z_n-graded Gelfand-Kirillov dimension.
Let $F$ be a finite field of $char F > 3$ and $sl_{2}(F)$ be the Lie algebra of traceless $2\times 2$ matrices over $F$. This paper aims for the following goals: Find a basis for the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-graded identities of $sl_{2}(F)$; Find a basis for the $\mathbb{Z}_{3}$-graded identities of $sl_{2}(F)$ when $F$ contains a primitive 3rd root of one; Find a basis for the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}\times \mathbb{Z}_{2}$-graded identities of $sl_{2}(F)$.
This paper deals with the variety of commutative algebras satisfying one of the four families of degree four identities found by Carini, Hentzel and Piacentini-Cattaneo in 1988. We give a characterization of representations and irreducible modules on these algebras. Our results require that the characteristic of the ground field be different from 2,3.
For each irreducible finite dimensional representation of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$ of $2\times 2$ traceless matrices, an explicit uniform upper bound is given for the multiplicities in the cocharacter sequence of the polynomial identities satisfied by the given representation.
Let $A$ be a residually finite dimensional algebra (not necessarily associative) over a field $k$. Suppose first that $k$ is algebraically closed. We show that if $A$ satisfies a homogeneous almost identity $Q$, then $A$ has an ideal of finite codimension satisfying the identity $Q$. Using well known results of Zelmanov, we conclude that, if a residually finite dimensional Lie algebra $L$ over $k$ is almost $d$-Engel, then $L$ has a nilpotent (resp. locally nilpotent) ideal of finite codimension if char $k=0$ (resp. char $k > 0$). Next, suppose that $k$ is finite (so $A$ is residually finite).…
We find explicitly the multiplicities in the (mixed) trace cocharacter sequence of two $3\times 3$ matrices over a field of characteristic 0 and show that asymptotically they behave as polynomials of seventh degree. As a consequence we obtain also the multiplicities of certain irreducible characters in the cocharacter sequence of the polynomial identities of $3\times 3$ matrices.
The categories of almost modules and almost algebras are introduced as a convenient setting for the development of Faltings' method of almost etale extensions. After some preliminaries of general "almost homological algebra" we construct the almost version of the cotangent complex and we use it to generalise some results of Faltings on the lifting of almost etale morphisms and almost etale algebras over nilpotent extensions. We also study the "almost trace" of an almost flat and almost finitely presented morphism, in particular we show that the almost trace is (almost) perfect if and only if t…
Consider the algebra M(n,F) of n x n matrices over an infinite field F of arbitrary characteristic. An identity for M(n,F) with forms is such a polynomial in n x n generic matrices and in σ_k(x), 0<k\leq n, coefficients in the characteristic polynomial of monomials in generic matrices, that is equal to zero matrix. This notion is a characteristic free analogue of identities for M(n,F) with trace. In 1996 Zubkov established an infinite generating set for the T-ideal T(n) of identities for M(n,F) with forms. Namely, for t>n he introduced partial linearizations of σ_t and proved that they togethe…
Two matrices $A$ and $B$ are called unitary (resp. orthogonal) equivalent if $AU=VB$ for two unitary (resp. orthogonal) matrices $U$ and $V$. Using trace identities, criteria are given for simultaneous unitary, orthogonal or complex orthogonal equivalence between two sets of matrices.
