We show that the Szekeres system with cosmological constant admits a sufficient number of conservation laws, which allow to claim the integrability of the system. The main novelty in this investigation is that we find that the unique attractor of the Szekeres system is the isotropic inhomogeneous de Sitter (-like) universe, contrary to the original system in which the attractors describe Kantowski-Sachs (-like) spacetimes. We also study the existence of quantum corrections and the emergence of classicality by considering the linear and quadratic conserved quantities at the quantum level. We perform an analysis considering different approaches, involving the Bohmian quantum potential and a probability analysis. The result is that there are no quantum corrections for the quadratic integrals, while there exists a linear case for which we find quantum corrections.
The quantization scheme is suggested for a spatially inhomogeneous 1+1 Bianchi I model. The scheme consists in quantization of the equations of motion and gives the operator (so-called quasi-Heisenberg) equations describing an explicit evolution of a system. Some particular gauge suitable for quantization is proposed. The Wheeler-DeWitt equation is considered in the vicinity of zero scale factor and it is used to construct a space, where the quasi-Heisenberg operators act. Spatial discretization as a UV regularization procedure is suggested for the equations of motion.
We explore the quantization of a $(1+1)$-dimensional inhomogeneous scalar field theory in which Poincaré symmetry is explicitly broken. We show the `classical equivalence' between a scalar field theory on curved spacetime background and its corresponding inhomogeneous scalar field theory. This implies that a hidden connection may exist among some inhomogeneous field theories, which corresponds to general covariance in field theory on curved spacetime. Based on the classical equivalence, we propose how to quantize a specific field theory with broken Poincaré symmetry inspired by standard field …
We construct states on the algebra of the Klein-Gordon field that minimize the energy density in homogeneous and in inhomogeneous spacetimes, both with compact Cauchy hypersurfaces. The energy density is measured by geodesic observers and smeared over a spacelike slab of spacetime, entirely containing a Cauchy hypersurface and extended in time. We further show that these states are Hadamard states. The present construction generalizes the construction of States of Low Energy in Robertson-Walker spacetimes presented by Olbermann (2007).
We argue that quantum theory in curved spacetime should be invariant under the continuous spacetime symmetries thaat are connected with the identity. For typical warped-product spacetimes, we prove that such invariance can be actually implemented, at least at the level of first quantization. Our approach rests on a mode decomposition which is special to the context of warped spacetimes.
It is proved that the spectrum of scalar particles generated from the initial vacuum in inhomogeneous spacetime is nearly thermal in the limit of large momentum $k$, if the momentum was defined as the variable of the Fourier transform of the coordinate in the scalar field.
We give a short account of the quantisation of the Szekeres spacetime by considering the symmetries of a reduced action principle. This is an alternative approach than the one followed in the literature for the study of inhomogeneities, which is usually based on perturbations of an inhomogeneous field on the spacetime background. Here, we examine the emergence of classicality with an exact inhomogeneous solution. We check whether the two criteria for classicality are satisfied, that is the correlations on the phase space and decoherence. We verify that these two properties indeed hold, thus th…
We discuss the algebraic quantization of a real, massive scalar field in the Poincaré patch of the (d+1)-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime, with arbitrary boundary conditions. By using the functional formalism, we show that it is always possible to associate to such system an algebra of observables enjoying the standard properties of causality, time-slice axiom and F-locality. In addition, we characterize the wavefront set of the ground state associated to the system under investigation. As a consequence, we are able to generalize the definition of Hadamard states and construct a global alg…
An algebraic quantization procedure for discretized spacetime models is suggested based on the duality between finitary substitutes and their incidence algebras. The provided limiting procedure that yields conventional manifold characteristics of spacetime structures is interpreted in the algebraic quantum framework as a correspondence principle.
In this paper we can solve a Wheeler-DeWitt equation of the some inhomogeneous spacetime models as a local solution. From the previous study of up-to-down method we derived the static restriction relating the problem of the time. Although static restriction does not commute with the general Hamiltonian constraint, the Hamiltonian constraint of some mini-superspace models commute with static restriction. We can quantize such inhomogeneous models. With obtained result we can success to simplify the general local Hamiltonian constraint.
We present the effect of the quantum corrections on the Szekeres spacetime, a system important for the study of the inhomogeneities of the pre-inflationary era of the universe. The study is performed in the context of canonical quantisation in the presence of symmetries. We construct an effective classical Lagrangian and impose the quantum version of its classical integrals of motion on the wave function. The interpretational scheme of the quantum solution is that of Bohmian mechanics, in which one can avoid the unitarity problem of quantum cosmology. We discuss our results in this context.
Recently it was shown that the exact cosmological solutions known as the vacuum plane-wave solutions are late-time attractors for an open set of the spatially homogeneous Bianchi universes containing a non-inflationary $γ$-law perfect fluid. In this paper we study inhomogeneous perturbations of these plane-wave spacetimes. By using expansion-normalised scale-invariant variables we show that these solutions are unstable to generic inhomogeneous perturbations. The crucial observation for establishing this result is a divergence of the expansion-normalised frame variables which ultimately leads t…
Tolman-Bondi inhomogeneous spacetimes are used as a cosmological model for type Ia supernova data. It is found that with certain parameter choices the model fits the data as well as the standard $Λ$CDM cosmology does.
We quantize the Schwarzschild spacetime with naked singularity using the affine coherent states quantization method. The novelty of our approach is quantization of both temporal and spatial coordinates. Quantization smears the gravitational singularity indicated by the Kretschmann invariant avoiding its localization in the configuration space. This way we resolve the singularity problem of considered spacetime at quantum level.
We investigate the existence of inhomogeneous Szekeres spacetimes in Einstein-æther theory. We show that inhomogeneous solutions which can be seen as extension of the Szekeres solutions existing in Einstein-æther gravity only for a specific relation between the dimensionless coefficients which defines the coupling between the æther filed with gravity. The two Szekeres classes of solutions are derived. Also a class of inhomogeneous FLRW-like spacetimes is allowed by the theory for arbitrary values of the dimensionless coefficients of the æther field. The stability of the solutions obtained is p…
Numerical investigation of a class of inhomogeneous cosmological spacetimes shows evidence that at a generic point in space the evolution toward the initial singularity is asymptotically that of a spatially homogeneous spacetime with Mixmaster behavior. This supports a long-standing conjecture due to Belinskii et al. on the nature of the generic singularity in Einstein's equations.
We discuss the quantization of an unstable field through the construction of a "one-particle Hilbert space." The system considered here is a neutral scalar field evolving over a globally hyperbolic static spacetime and subject to a stationary external scalar potential. In order to prove our results we assume spacetimes without horizons and that the theory possess a "mass gap." Our strategy consists in building a complex structure, which arises from a suitable positive bilinear form defined over the space of classical solutions of the field equation. Once the space of states of the quantum fiel…
In this paper, we find all the Conformal Killing Vectors (CKVs) and their Lie Algebra for the recently reported [cqg1] spherically symmetric, shear-free separable metric spacetimes with non-vanishing energy or heat flux. We also solve the geodesic equatios of motion for the spacetime under consideration.
We discuss the behaviour of external fields that interact with a Dirac neutral particle with a permanent electric dipole moment in order to achieve relativistic bound states solutions in a noninertial frame and in the presence of a topological defect spacetime. We show that the noninertial effects of the Fermi-Walker reference frame induce a radial magnetic field even in the absence of magnetic charges, which is influenced by the topology of the cosmic string spacetime. We then discuss the conditions that the induced fields must satisfy to yield the relativistic bound states corresponding to t…
We investigate static inhomogeneous charged planar black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell system in an asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime. Within the framework of linear perturbations, the solutions are numerically and analytically constructed from the Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole solution. The perturbation analysis predicts that the Cauchy horizon always disappears for any wavelength perturbation, supporting the strong cosmic censorship conjecture. For extremal black holes, we analytically show that an observer freely falling into the black hole feels infinite tidal force at t…
Covariant, self-interacting scalar quantum field theories admit solutions for low enough spacetime dimensions, but when additional divergences appear in higher dimensions, the traditional approach leads to results, such as triviality, that are less than satisfactory. Guided by idealized but soluble {\it non}renormalizable models, a nontraditional proposal for the quantization of covariant scalar field theories is advanced, which achieves a term-by-term, divergence-free, perturbation analysis of interacting models expanded about a suitable pseudofree theory, which differs from a free theory by …
We analyze classical and quantum dynamics of a particle in 2d spacetimes with constant curvature which are locally isometric but globally different. We show that global symmetries of spacetime specify the symmetries of physical phase-space and the corresponding quantum theory. To quantize the systems we parametrize the physical phase-space by canonical coordinates. Canonical quantization leads to unitary irreducible representations of $SO_\uparrow (2.1)$ group.
The thermodynamical description of black holes is reviewed and critiqued. We present an alternative, microcanonical description of black holes and discuss the major differences. In particular the decay rates of black holes are compared in the two different pictures.
In this work cosmological models are considered for the low energy string cosmological effective action (tree level) in the absence of dilaton potential. A two parametric non-diagonal family of analytic solutions is found. The curvature is non singular, however the string coupling diverges exponentially.
A complete quantization of a homogeneous and isotropic spacetime with closed spatial sections coupled to a massive scalar field is provided, within the framework of Loop Quantum Cosmology. We identify solutions with their initial data on the minimum volume section, and from this we construct the physical Hilbert space. Moreover, a perturbative study allows us to introduce small inhomogeneities. After gauge fixing, the inhomogeneous part of the system is reduced to a linear field theory. We then adopt a standard Fock representation to quantize these degrees of freedom. For the considered case o…
Over the last decade a growing number of quantum-gravity researchers has been looking for opportunities for the first ever experimental evidence of a Planck-length quantum property of spacetime. These studies are usually based on the analysis of some candidate indirect implications of spacetime quantization, such as a possible curvature of momentum space. Some recent proposals have raised hope that we might also gain direct experimental access to quantum properties of spacetime, by finding evidence of limitations to the measurability of the center-of-mass coordinates of some macroscopic bodies…
We compare classical and quantum dynamics of a particle in the de Sitter spacetimes with different topologies to show that the result of quantization strongly depends on global properties of a classical system. We present essentially self-adjoint representations of the algebra of observables for each system. Quantization based on global properties of a classical system accounts properly its symmetries.
We present cosmological-scale numerical simulations of an evolving universe in full general relativity (GR) and introduce a new numerical tool, {\sc CosmoGRaPH}, which employs the Baumgarte-Shapiro-Shibata-Nakamura (BSSN) formalism on a 3-dimensional grid. Using {\sc CosmoGRaPH}, we calculate the effect of an inhomogeneous matter distribution on the evolution of a spacetime. We also present the results of a set of standard stability tests to demonstrate the robustness of our simulations.
We describe the short-distance properties of the spacetime of a system of D-particles by viewing their matrix-valued coordinates as coupling constants of a deformed worldsheet $σ$-model. We show that the Zamolodchikov metric on the associated moduli space naturally encodes properties of the non-abelian dynamics, and from this we derive new spacetime uncertainty relations directly from the quantum string theory. The non-abelian uncertainties exhibit decoherence effects which suggest the interplay of quantum gravity in multiple D-particle dynamics.
We prove that, under the standard conformal scaling, a massless field in de Sitter spacetime admits an O(4)-invariant Fock quantization such that time evolution is unitarily implemented. This result disproves previous claims in the literature. We discuss the relationship between this quantization with unitary dynamics and the family of O(4)-invariant Hadamard states given by Allen and Folacci, as well as with the Bunch-Davies vacuum.
We investigate the existence of inhomogeneous exact solutions in Weyl Integrable theory with a matter source. In particular, we consider the existence of a dust fluid source while for the underlying geometry we assume a line element which belongs to the family of silent universes. We solve explicitly the field equations and we find the Szekeres spacetimes in Weyl Integrable theory. We show that only the isotropic family can describe inhomogeneous solutions where the LTB spacetimes are included. A detailed analysis of the dynamics of the field equations is given where the past and future attrac…
We apply our model of quantum gravity to a Kerr-AdS spacetime of dimension $2 m+1$, $m\ge2$, where all rotational parameters are equal, resulting in a wave equation in a quantum spacetime which has a sequence of solutions that can be expressed as a product of stationary and temporal eigenfunctions. The stationary eigenfunctions can be interpreted as radiation and the temporal as gravitational waves. The event horizon corresponds in the quantum model to a Cauchy hypersurface that can be crossed by causal curves in both directions such that the information paradox does not occur. We also prove t…
Linearized Einstein gravity (with possibly nonzero cosmological constant) is quantized in the framework of algebraic quantum field theory by analogy with Dimock's treatment of electromagnetism [Rev. Math. Phys. 4 (1992) 223--233]. To achieve this, the classical theory is developed in a full, rigorous and systematic fashion, with particular attention given to the circumstances under which the symplectic product is weakly non-degenerate and to the related question of whether the space of solutions is separated by the classical observables on which the quantum theory is modelled.
We study the effect of small-scale inhomogeneities for Einstein clusters. We construct a spherically symmetric stationary spacetime with small-scale radial inhomogeneities and propose the Gedankenexperiment. An hypothetical observer at the center constructs, using limited observational knowledge, a simplified homogeneous model of the configuration. An idealization introduces side effects. The inhomogeneous spacetime and the effective homogeneous spacetime are given by simple solutions to Einstein equations. They provide a basic toy-model for studies of the effect of small-scale inhomogeneities…
We develop a quantization scheme for Maxwell's equations without source on an arbitrary four dimensional globally hyperbolic spacetime. The field strength tensor is the key dynamical object and it is not assumed a priori that it descends from a vector potential. It is shown that, in general, the associated field algebra can contain a non trivial centre and, on account of this, such a theory cannot be described within the framework of general local covariance unless further restrictive assumptions on the topology of the spacetime are made.
We study the problem of quantization of thin shells in a Weyl-Dirac theory by deriving a Wheeler-DeWitt equation from the dynamics. Solutions are found which have interpretations in both cosmology and particle physics.
The Gowdy cosmologies provide a suitable arena to further develop Loop Quantum Cosmology, allowing the presence of inhomogeneities. For the particular case of Gowdy spacetimes with the spatial topology of a three-torus and a content of linearly polarized gravitational waves, we detail a hybrid quantum theory in which we combine a loop quantization of the degrees of freedom that parametrize the subfamily of homogeneous solutions, which represent Bianchi I spacetimes, and a Fock quantization of the inhomogeneities. Two different theories are constructed and compared, corresponding to two differe…
We consider here kinematical quantization: a first and often overlooked step in quantization procedures. $\mathbb{R}$, $\mathbb{R}_+$ and the interval are considered, as well as direct (Cartesian) products thereof. Some simple minisuperspace models, and mode by mode consideration of slightly inhomogeneous cosmology, have indefinite signature versions of such kinematical quantizations. The examples in the current paper build in particular toward the case of vacuum $\mathbb{S}^3$ slightly inhomogeneous cosmology's mode configuration space, which is mathematically a finite time interval slab of M…
In curved spacetimes, the lack of criteria for the construction of a unique quantization is a fundamental problem undermining the significance of the predictions of quantum field theory. Inequivalent quantizations lead to different physics. Recently, however, some uniqueness results have been obtained for fields in non-stationary settings. In particular, for vacua that are invariant under the background symmetries, a unitary implementation of the classical evolution suffices to pick up a unique Fock quantization in the case of Klein-Gordon fields with time-dependent mass, propagating in a stat…
We present a singularity free class of inhomogeneous cylindrical universes filled with stiff perfect fluid $(ρ= p)$. Its matter free $ (ρ= 0)$ limit yield two distinct vacuum spacetimes which can be considered as analogues of Kasner solution for inhomogeneous singularity free spacetime.
In order to obtain a well defined quantum gravity we define the spacetime in relation to the "phenomenology" of the physical interactions; however we shall to speculate with this "in General". Besides, we comment the reasons that give to the gravitational field a privilegied situation over the others.
Preliminaries for Many-Particle approach to quantization of Einstein-Hilbert theory of gravitation are presented in this paper. Einstein-Friedmann Spacetime is detailed discussed from this point of view. Von Neumann-Araki-Woods second quantization in Fock space of canonical Hamilton field equations is presented. In result Spacetime as system with Bose-Einstein statistics is described and thermodynamics of the system is computed.
Motivated by both concepts of R.J. Adler's recent work on utilizing Clifford algebra as the linear line element $ds = \left\langle γ_μ\right\rangle dX^μ$, and the fermionization of the cylindrical worldsheet Polyakov action, we introduce a new type of spacetime quantization that is fully covariant. The theory is based on the reinterpretation of Adler's linear line element as $ds = γ_μ\left\langle λγ^μ\right\rangle$, where $λ$ is the characteristic length of the theory. We name this new operator as "spacetime interval operator", and argue that it can be regarded as a natural extension to the on…
Purely time dependent solutions in four-dimensional Einstein-Cartan-Kalb-Ramond (ECKR) theory of gravity are shown not to be possible leading to a trivial vanishing of all Kalb-Ramond fields. This result seems to contradict previously results obtained by SenGupta et al. (Class. and Quantum Gravity 19(2002)677) where de Sitter spacetime solution is found as an example of opticaly active spacetime. It seems that only inhomogeneous KR fields are possible in four-dimensional torsioned spacetimes.
We discuss the relation between `bare' cosmological parameters as the true spatial average characteristics that determine the cosmological model, and the parameters interpreted by observers with a `Friedmannian bias', i.e., within a homogeneous space geometry. We may say that the latter are `dressed' by the smoothed-out geometrical inhomogeneities of the surveyed spatial region. We identify two effects that quantify the difference between `bare' and `dressed' parameters: `curvature backreaction' and `volume effect'. An estimate of the latter is given in terms of a simple geometrical example.
We investigate non-inertial and gravitational effects on quantum states in electromagnetic fields and present the analytic solution for energy eigenstates for the Schrödinger equation including non-inertial, gravitational and electromagnetic effects. We find that in addition to the Landau quantization the rotation of spacetime itself leads to the additional quantization, and that the energy levels for an electron are different from those for a proton at the level of gravitational corrections.
We perform the canonical quantization of a relativistic spinless particle moving in a curved and static spacetime. We show that the classical theory already describes at the same time both particle and antiparticle. The analyses involves time-depending constraints and we are able to construct the two-particle Hilbert space. The requirement of a static spacetime is necessary in order to have a well defined Schrödinger equation and to avoid problems with vacuum instabilities. The severe ordering ambiguities we found are in essence the same ones of the well known non-relativistic case.
We study the quantization of the curved spacetime created by ultrarelativistic particles at Planckian energies. We consider a minisuperspace model based on the classical shock wave metric generated by these particles, and for which the Wheeler - De Witt equation is solved exactly. The wave function of the geometry is a Bessel function whose argument is the classical action. This allows us to describe not only the semiclassical regime $(S\to\infty),$ but also the strong quantum regime $(S\to0).$ We analyze the interaction with a scalar field $ϕ$ and apply the third quantization formalism to it.…
We study the propagation of bubbles of new vacuum in a radially inhomogeneous background filled with dust or radiation, and including a cosmological constant, as a first step in the analysis of the influence of inhomogeneities in the evolution of an inflating region. We also compare the cases with dust and radiation backgrounds and show that the evolution of the bubble in radiation environments is notably different from that in the corresponding dust cases, both for homogeneous and inhomogeneous ambients, leading to appreciable differences in the evolution of the proper radius of the bubble.
A way to encode acceleration directly into fields has recently being proposed, thus establishing a new kind of fields, the accelerated fields. The definition of accelerated fields points to the quantization of space and time, analogously to the way quantities like energy and momentum are quantized in usual quantum field theories. Unruh effect has been studied in connection with quantum field theory in curved spacetime and it is described by recruiting a uniformly accelerated observer. In this work, as a first attempt to demonstrate the utility of accelerated fields, we present an alternative w…
We study gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric inhomogeneous dust cloud in the Lovelock theory without cosmological constant. We show that the final fate of gravitational collapse in this theory depends on the spacetime dimensions. In odd dimensions the naked singularities formed are found to be massive. In the even dimensions,on the other hand, the naked singularities are found to be massless. We also show that the curvature strength of naked singularity is independent of the spacetime dimensions in odd dimensions. However, it depends on the spacetime dimensions in even dimension.
The Wightman function i.e. vacuum two-point function, for a massless free scalar field in Fock quantization is inversely proportional to the invariant distance squared between the corresponding spacetime points. Naturally it diverges when these two points are taken to be infinitesimally close to each other. Using a combination of analytical and numerical methods, we show that the Wightman function is bounded from above in polymer quantization of scalar field. The bounded value of the Wightman function is governed by the polymer scale and its bounded nature can be viewed as if the spacetime has…
We examine the dependence of quantization on global properties of a classical system. Quantization based on local properties may lead to ambiguities and inconsistency between local and global symmetries of a quantum system. Our quantization method based on global characteristics has sound foundation. Presented results give insight into the nature of removable type singularity of spacetime at the quantum level.
