In this article, a $q$-series examined by Kluyver and Uchimura is generalized. This allows us to find generalization of the identities in the random acyclic digraph studied by Simon, Crippa, and Collenberg in 1993. As one of the corollaries of our main theorem, we get results of Dilcher and Andrews, Crippa, and Simon. This main theorem involves a surprising new generalization of the divisor function $σ_s(n)$, which we denote by $σ_{s,z}(n)$. Analytic properties of $σ_{s,z}(n)$ are also studied. As a special case of one of our theorem we obtain result from a recent paper of Bringmann and Jennings-Shaffer.
Using basic hypergeometric functions and partial fraction decomposition we give a new kind of generalization of identities due to Uchimura, Dilcher, Van Hamme, Prodinger, and Chen-Fu related to divisor functions. An identity relating Lambert series to Eulerian polynomials is also proved.
In this article we extend a theorem of Andrews, Crippa, and Simon on the asymptotic behavior of polynomials defined by a general class of recursive equations. Here the polynomials are in the variable $q$, and the recursive definition at step $n$ introduces a polynomial in $n$. Our extension replaces the polynomial in $n$ with either an exponential or periodic function of $n$.
In 1984, Bressoud and Subbarao obtained an interesting weighted partition identity for a generalized divisor function, by means of combinatorial arguments. Recently, the last three named authors found an analytic proof of the aforementioned identity of Bressoud and Subbarao starting from a $q$-series identity of Ramanujan. In the present paper, we revisit the combinatorial arguments of Bressoud and Subbarao, and derive a more general weighted partition identity. Furthermore, with the help of a fractional differential operator, we establish a few more Bressoud-Subbarao type weighted partition i…
The class of Lambert series generating functions (LGFs) denoted by $L_α(q)$ formally enumerate the generalized sum-of-divisors functions, $σ_α(n) = \sum_{d|n} d^α$, for all integers $n \geq 1$ and fixed real-valued parameters $α\geq 0$. We prove new formulas expanding the higher-order derivatives of these LGFs. The results we obtain are combined to express new identities expanding the generalized sum-of-divisors functions. These new identities are expanded in the form of sums of polynomially scaled multiples of a related class of divisor sums depending on $n$ and $α$.
In a one-page fragment published with his lost notebook, Ramanujan stated two double series identities associated, respectively, with the famous Gauss Circle and Dirichlet Divisor problems. The identities contain an "extra" parameter, and it is possible that Ramanujan derived these identities with the intent of attacking these famous problems. Similar famous unsolved problems are connected with $f_K(n)$, the number of integral ideals of norm $n$ in an algebraic number field $K$. In this paper we establish Riesz sum identities containing an "extra" parameter and involving $f_K(n)$, or divisor f…
Given a multiplicative function $f$ which is periodic over the primes, we obtain a full asymptotic expansion for the shifted convolution sum $\sum_{|h|<n\leq x} f(n) τ(n-h)$, where $τ$ denotes the divisor function and $h\in\mathbb{Z}\setminus\{0\}$. We consider in particular the special cases where $f$ is the generalized divisor function $τ_z$ with $z\in\mathbb{C}$, and the characteristic function of sums of two squares (or more generally, ideal norms of abelian extensions). As another application, we deduce a full asymptotic expansion in the generalized Titchmarsh divisor problem $\sum_{|h|<n…
In a 1916 paper, Ramanujan studied the additive convolution $S_{a, b}(n)$ of sum-of-divisors functions $σ_a(n)$ and $σ_b(n)$, and proved an asymptotic formula for it when $a$ and $b$ are positive odd integers. He also conjectured that his asymptotic formula should hold for all positive real $a$ and $b$. Ramanujan's conjecture was subsequently proved by Ingham, and then by Halberstam with a power saving error term. In this paper, we give a new proof of Ramanujan's conjecture that obtains lower order terms in the asymptotics for most ranges of the parameters. We also describe a connection to a c…
Uchimura, in 1987, introduced a probability generating function for a random variable $X$ and using properties of this function he discovered an interesting $q$-series identity. He further showed that the $m$-th cumulant with respect to the random variable $X$ is nothing but the generating function for the generalized divisor function $σ_{m-1}(n)$. Simon, Crippa, and Collenberg, in 1993, explored the $G_{n,p}$-model of a random acyclic digraph and defined a random variable $γ_n^{*}(1)$. Quite interestingly, they found links between limit of its mean and the generating function for the divisor …
In this article, we study a divisor function in an arbitrary number field akin to Koshliakov's work on Vorono\"{\dotlessi} summation formula. More precisely, we generalize Koshliakov's kernel and Koshliakov's transform over any number field to obtain identities for the Lambert series associated to the divisor function in an arbitrary number field.
Ramanujan recorded five interesting q-series identities in a section that is not as systematically arranged as the other chapters of his second notebook. These five identities do not seem to have acquired enough attention. Recently, Dixit and the third author found a one-variable generalization of one of the aforementioned five identities. From their generalized identity, they were able to derive the last three of these q-series identities, but didn't establish the first two. In the present article, we derive a one-variable generalization of the main identity of Dixit and the third author from…
Motivated by two identities published with Ramanujan's lost notebook and connected, respectively, with the Gauss circle problem and the Dirichlet divisor problem, in an earlier paper, three of the present authors derived representations for certain sums of products of trigonometric functions as double series of Bessel functions. These series are generalized in the present paper by introducing the novel notion of balanced derivatives, leading to further theorems. As we will see below, the regions of convergence in the unbalanced case are entirely different than those in the balanced case. From …
The $2$-fold Bailey lemma is a special case of the $s$-fold Bailey lemma introduced by Andrews in 2000. We examine this special case and its applications to partitions and recently discovered $q$-series identities. Our work provides a general comparison of the utility of the $2$-fold Bailey lemma and the more widely applied $1$-fold Bailey lemma. We also offer a discussion of the $spt_M(n)$ function and related identities.
Farkas in \cite{Farkas} introduced an arithmetic function $δ$ and found an identity involving $δ$ and a sum of divisor function $σ'$. The first-named author and Raji in \cite{Guerzhoy} discussed a natural generalization of the identity by introducing a quadratic character $χ$ modulo a prime $p \equiv 3 \pmod 4$. In particular, it turns out that, besides the original case $p=3$ considered by Farkas, an exact analog (in a certain precise sense) of Farkas' identity happens only for $p=7$. Recently, for quadratic characters of small composite moduli, Williams in \cite{Williams} found a finite list…
We generalize recent matrix-based factorization theorems for Lambert series generating functions generating the coefficients $(f \ast 1)(n)$ for some arithmetic function $f$. Our new factorization theorems provide analogs to these established expansions generating sums of the form $\sum_{d: (d,n)=1} f(d)$ (type I) and the Anderson-Apostol sums $\sum_{d|(m,n)} f(d) g(n/d)$ (type II) for any arithmetic functions $f$ and $g$. Our treatment of the type II sums includes a matrix-based factorization method relating the partition function $p(n)$ to arbitrary arithmetic functions $f$. We also conclude…
Lucy Slater used Bailey's $_6ψ_6$ summation formula to derive the Bailey pairs she used to construct her famous list of 130 identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan type. In the present paper we apply the same techniques to Chu's $_{10}ψ_{10}$ generalization of Bailey's formula to produce quite general Bailey pairs. Slater's Bailey pairs are then recovered as special limiting cases of these more general pairs. In re-examining Slater's work, we find that her Bailey pairs are, for the most part, special cases of more general Bailey pairs containing one or more free parameters. Further, we also find ne…
A generalization of a beautiful $q$-series identity found in the unorganized portion of Ramanujan's second and third notebooks is obtained. As a consequence, we derive a new three-parameter identity which is a rich source of partition-theoretic information. In particular, we use this identity to obtain a generalization of a recent result of Andrews, Garvan and Liang, which itself generalizes the famous result of Fokkink, Fokkink and Wang. This three-parameter identity also leads to several new weighted partition identities as well as a natural proof of a recent result of Garvan. This natural p…
We consider a special case of a WP-Bailey chain of George Andrews, and use it to derive a number of curious transformations of basic hypergeometric series. We also derive two new WP-Bailey pairs, and use them to derive some additional new transformations for basic hypergeometric series. Finally, we briefly consider the implications of WP-Bailey pairs\\ $(α_n(a,k)$, $β_n(a,k))$, in which $α_n(a,k)$ is independent of $k$, for generalizations of identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan type.
The purpose of this note is to offer some partition implications of a $q$-series that is connected to the second Atkin-Garvan moment. Inequalities and relationships among the number of divisors and partitions are provided as consequences.
