We develop the perturbation theory for bosons interacting via a two-body potential $V$ of vanishing mean value. We find that the leading nonpairwise contribution to the energy emerges in the third order in $V$ and represents an effective three-body interaction, the sign of which in most cases (although not in general) is anticorrelated with the sign of the long-range tail of $V$. Explicit results are obtained for a few particular two-body interaction potentials and we perform a detailed perturbative analysis of tilted dipoles in quasi-low-dimensional geometries.
We investigate the interaction-driven instability of a quadratic band crossing arising for ultracold bosonic atoms loaded into a two-dimensional optical lattice. We consider the case when the degenerate point becomes a local minimum of both crossing energy bands such that it can support a stable Bose-Einstein condensate. Repulsive contact interaction among the condensed bosons induces a spontaneously time-reversal symmetry broken superfluid phase and a topological gap is opened in the excitation spectrum. We propose two concrete realizations of the desired quadratic band crossing in lattices w…
We calculate the effective three-body force for bosons interacting with each other by a two-body potential tuned to a narrow zero crossing in any dimension. We use the standard two-channel model parametrized by the background atom-atom interaction strength, the amplitude of the open-channel to closed-channel coupling, and the atom-dimer interaction strength. The three-body force originates from the atom-dimer interaction, but it can be dramatically enhanced for narrow crossings, i.e., for small atom-dimer conversion amplitudes. This effect can be used to stabilize quasi-two-dimensional dipolar…
When quantum particles are confined into lower dimensions, an effective three-body interaction inevitably arises and may cause significant consequences. Here we study bosons in one dimension with weak two-body and three-body interactions, predict the existence of two three-body bound states when both interactions are attractive, and determine their binding energies as universal functions of the two-body and three-body scattering lengths. We also show that an infinitesimal three-body attraction induces an excited bound state only for 3, 39, or more bosons. Our findings herein have direct releva…
Ultracold atoms offer valuable opportunities where interparticle interactions can be controlled at will. In particular, by extinguishing the two-body interaction, one can realize unique systems governed by the three-body interaction, which is otherwise hidden behind the two-body interaction. Here we study one-dimensional bosons with a weak three-body attraction and show that they form few-body bound states as well as a many-body droplet stabilized by the quantum mechanical effect. Their binding energies relative to that of three bosons are all universal and the ground-state energy of the dilut…
The relationship between natural orbitals, one-body coherences and two-body correlations is explored for bosonic many-body systems of definite parity with two occupied single-particle states. We show that the strength of local two-body correlations at the parity-symmetry center characterizes the number state distribution and controls the structure of non-local two-body correlations. A recipe for the experimental reconstruction of the natural orbital densities and quantum depletion is derived. These insights into the structure of the many-body wave-function are applied to the predicted quantum-…
When the binding energy of a two-body system goes to zero the two-body system shows a continuous scaling invariance governed by the large value of the scattering length. In the case of three identical bosons, the three-body system in the same limit shows the Efimov effect and the scale invariance is broken to a discrete scale invariance. As the number of bosons increases correlations appear between the binding energy of the few- and many-body systems. We discuss some of them as the relation between the saturation properties of the infinite system and the low-energy properties of the few-boson …
We investigate a system of dipolar bosons in an optical lattice with local two and three-body interactions. Using the mean-field theory approach, we obtain the ground state phase diagram of the extended Bose-Hubbard (EBH) model with both repulsive and attractive three-body interac- tions. We show that the additional three-body on-site interaction has strong effects on the phase diagram especially on the supersolid phase. Positive values of the three-body interaction lead to the enhancement of the gapped phases at densities larger than unity by reducing the supersolid region. However, a small a…
We consider quasi-stationary scattering of interacting bosonic matter waves in one-dimensional waveguides, as they arise in guided atom lasers. We show how the truncated Wigner (tW) method, which corresponds to the semiclassical description of the bosonic many-body system on the level of the diagonal approximation, can be utilized in order to describe such many-body bosonic scattering processes. Special emphasis is put on the discretization of space at the exact quantum level, in order to properly implement the semiclassical approximation and the tW method, as well as on the discussion of the …
We study binary atomic boson-fermion mixtures confined in one dimensional box potentials by few-body theory with contact interactions and mean-field many-body theory with density-density interactions. A variety of correlations and structures arise as the inter- and intra- species interactions are tuned. Both few-body and many-body results show that miscible phase and three-chunk phase separation are directly observable in the density profiles. Meanwhile, two-chunk phase separation can be inferred from the few-body correlations and many-body density profiles. We present phase diagrams of select…
The low-energy spectrum of $N$-boson clusters with pairwise zero-range interactions is believed to be governed by a three-body parameter. We study the ground state of $N$-boson clusters with infinite two-body $s$-wave scattering length by performing {\em{ab initio}} Monte Carlo simulations. To prevent Thomas collapse, different finite-range three-body regulators are used. The energy and structural properties for the three-body Hamiltonian with two-body zero-range interactions and three-body regulator are in much better agreement with the "ideal zero-range Efimov theory" results than those for …
We explore the interplay between tunneling and interatomic interactions in the dynamics of a bosonic Josephson junction. We tune the scattering length of an atomic $^{39}$K Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a double-well trap to investigate regimes inaccessible to other superconducting or superfluid systems. In the limit of small-amplitude oscillations, we study the transition from Rabi to plasma oscillations by crossing over from attractive to repulsive interatomic interactions. We observe a critical slowing down in the oscillation frequency by increasing the strength of an attractive inte…
This dissertation presents theoretical investigations of universality and finite-range corrections in few- and many-boson systems. The main focus is on ultra-cold atomic gases seen both from the three-body, many-body, and mean-field perspective. Topics include corrections to Efimov physics, the N-body Efimov effect, two-body correlations in condensates and higher-order interactions in mean-field BECs.
We analyse the ground-state properties of three-body constrained bosons in a one dimensional optical lattice with staggered hoppings analogous to the double well optical lattice. By considering attractive and repulsive on-site interactions between the bosons, we obtain the phase diagram which exhibits various quantum phases. Due to the double-well geometry and three-body constraint several gapped phases such as the Mott insulators and dimer/bond-order phases emerge at commensurate densities in the repulsive interaction regime. Attractive interaction leads to the pair formation which leads to t…
We consider the problem of a fixed impurity coupled to a small number $N$ of non-interacting bosons. We focus on impurity-boson interactions that are mediated by a closed-channel molecule, as is the case for tuneable interatomic interactions in cold-atom experiments. We show that this two-channel model can be mapped to a boson model with effective boson-boson repulsion, which enables us to solve the three-body ($N=2$) problem analytically and determine the trimer energy for impurity-boson scattering lengths $a>0$. By analysing the atom-dimer scattering amplitude, we find a critical scattering …
We propose a method of controlling two- and three-body interactions in an ultracold Bose gas in any dimension. The method requires us to have two coupled internal single-particle states split in energy such that the upper state is occupied virtually but amply during collisions. By varying system parameters one can switch off the two-body interaction while maintaining a strong three-body one. The mechanism can be implemented for dipolar bosons in the bilayer configuration with tunnelling or in an atomic system by using radio-frequency fields to couple two hyperfine states. One can then aim to o…
We investigate one-dimensional three-body systems composed of two identical bosons and one imbalanced atom (impurity) with two-body and three-body zero-range interactions. For the case in the absence of three-body interaction, we give a complete phase diagram of the number of three-body bound states in the whole region of mass ratio via the direct calculation of the Skornyakov-Ter-Martirosyan equations. We demonstrate that other low-lying three-body bound states emerge when the mass of the impurity particle is not equal to another two identical particles. We can obtain not only the binding ene…
Already a few bosons with contact interparticle interactions in small optical lattices feature a variety of quantum phases: superfluid, Mott-insulator and fermionized Tonks gases can be probed in such systems. To detect these phases -- pivotal for both experiment and theory -- as well as their many-body properties we analyze several distinct measures for the one-body and many-body Shannon information entropies. We exemplify the connection of these entropies with spatial correlations in the many-body state by contrasting them to the Glauber normalized correlation functions. To obtain the ground…
Crystallization is a generic phenomenon in classical and quantum mechanics arising in a variety of physical systems. In this work we focus on a specific platform, ultracold dipolar bosons, which can be realized in experiments with dilute gases. We review the relevant ingredients leading to crystallization, namely the interplay of contact and dipole-dipole interactions and system density, as well as the numerical algorithm employed. We characterize the many-body phases investigating correlations and superfluidity.
We solve the three-boson problem with contact two- and three-body interactions in one dimension and analytically calculate the ground and excited trimer-state energies. Then, by using the diffusion Monte Carlo technique we calculate the binding energy of three dimers formed in a one-dimensional Bose-Bose or Fermi-Bose mixture with attractive interspecies and repulsive intraspecies interactions. Combining these results with our three-body analytics we extract the three-dimer scattering length close to the dimer-dimer zero crossing. In both considered cases the three-dimer interaction turns out …
We investigate the problem of $N$ identical bosons that are coupled to an impurity particle with infinite mass. For non-interacting bosons, we show that a dynamical impurity-boson interaction, mediated by a closed-channel dimer, can induce an effective boson-boson repulsion which strongly modifies the bound states consisting of the impurity and $N$ bosons. In particular, we demonstrate the existence of two universal 'multi-body' resonances, where all multi-body bound states involving any $N$ emerge and disappear. The first multi-body resonance corresponds to infinite impurity-boson scattering …
We explore the properties of weakly bound bosonic states in the strongly interacting regime. Combining a correlated-Gaussian (CG) basis set expansion with a complex scaling method, we extract the energies and structural properties of bosonic cluster states with $N\le6$ for different two-body potentials. The identification of five- and six-body resonances attached to an excited Efimov trimer provides strong support to the premise of Efimov universality in bosonic systems. Our study also reveals a rich structure of bosonic cluster states. Besides the lowest cluster states which behave as bosonic…
We study the few-body dynamics of dipolar bosons in one-dimensional double-wells. Increasing the interaction strength, by investigating one-body observables, we study in the considered few-body systems tunneling oscillations, self-trapping and the regime exhibting an equilibrating behaviour. The corresponding two-body correlation dynamics exhibits a strong interplay between the interatomic correlation due to non-local nature of the repulsion and the inter-well coherence. We also study the link between the correlation dynamics and the occupation of natural orbitals of the one-body density matri…
We investigate local three-body correlations for bosonic particles in three and one dimensions as a function of the interaction strength. The three-body correlation function g(3) is determined by measuring the three-body recombination rate in an ultracold gas of Cs atoms. In three dimensions, we measure the dependence of g(3) on the gas parameter in a BEC, finding good agreement with the theoretical prediction accounting for beyond-mean-field effects. In one dimension, we observe a reduction of g(3) by several orders of magnitude upon increasing interactions from the weakly interacting BEC to …
We investigate the ground state properties of the gaseous mixture of a single species of bosons and fermions at zero temperature, where bosons are major in population over fermions, and form the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The boson-boson and boson-fermion interactions are assumed to be weakly repulsive and attractive respectively, while the fermion-fermion interaction is absent due to the Pauli exclusion for the low energy $s$-wave scattering. We treat fermions as a gas of polarons dressed with Bogoliubov phonons, which is an elementary excitation of the BEC, and evaluate the ground state…
The Mott insulator-superfluid transition for ultracold bosonic atoms in an optical lattice has been extensively studied in the framework of the Bose-Hubbard model with two-body on-site interactions. In this paper, we analyze the additional effect of the three-body on-site interactions on this phase transition in optical lattice and the transitions between the various phases that arise in an optical superlattice. Using the mean-field theory and the density matrix renormalization group method, we find the phase diagrams depicting the relationships between various physical quantities in an optica…
Ultra-cold bosons in zig-zag optical lattices present a rich physics due to the interplay between frustration, induced by lattice geometry, two-body interaction and three-body constraint. Unconstrained bosons may develop chiral superfluidity and a Mott-insulator even at vanishingly small interactions. Bosons with a three-body constraint allow for a Haldane-insulator phase in non-polar gases, as well as pair-superfluidity and density wave phases for attractive interactions. These phases may be created and detected within the current state of the art techniques.
We study strong interaction effects in a one-dimensional (1D) Boson gas across a narrow confinement induced resonance (CIR). In contrast to the zero range potential, the 1D two-body interaction in the narrow CIR can be written as a polynomial of derivative $δ$-function interaction on many-body level. Using the asymptotic Bethe ansatz, we find that the low energy physics of this many-body problem is described by the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid where the Luttinger parameters are essentially modified by an effective finite range parameter $v$. This parameter drastically alters quantum criticality a…
We make use of a simple pair correlated wave function approach to obtain results for the ground-state densities and momentum distribution of a one-dimensional three-body bosonic system with different interactions in a harmonic trap. For equal interactions this approach is able to reproduce the known analytical cases of zero and infinite repulsion. We show that our results for the correlations agree with the exact diagonalization in all interaction regimes and with analytical results for the strongly repulsive impurity. This method also enables us to access the more complicated cases of mixed i…
A zero range approach is used to model resonant two-body interactions between three identical bosons. A dimensionless phase parametrizes the three-body boundary condition while the scattering length enters the Bethe-Peierls boundary condition. The model is solved exactly at zero energy for any value of the scattering length, positive or negative. From this solution, an analytical expression for the rate of three-body recombination to the universal shallow dimer is extracted.
When describing the low-energy physics of bosons in a double-well potential with a high barrier between the wells and sufficiently weak atom-atom interactions, one can to a good approximation ignore the high energy states and thereby obtain an effective two-mode model. Here, we show that the regime in which the two-mode model is valid can be extended by adding an on-site three-body interaction term and a three-body interaction-induced tunneling term to the two-mode Hamiltonian. These terms effectively account for virtual transitions to the higher energy states. We determine appropriate strengt…
The out-of-equilibrium quantum dynamics of a Bose gas trapped in an asymmetric double well and interacting with a finite-range interaction has been studied in real space by solving the time-dependent many-body Schrödinger equation numerically accurately using the multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree method for bosons (MCTDHB). We have focused on the weakly interacting limit where the system is essentially condensed. We have examined the impact of the range of the interaction on the dynamics of the system, both at the mean-field and many-body levels. Explicitly, we have studied the maxim…
Four identical spinless bosons with purely attractive two-body short-range interactions and repulsive three-body interactions under external spherically symmetric harmonic confinement are considered. The repulsive three-body potential prevents the formation of deeply-bound states with molecular character. The low-energy spectrum with vanishing orbital angular momentum and positive parity for infinitely large two-body $s$-wave scattering length is analyzed in detail. Using the three-body contact, states are classified as universal, quasi-universal, or strongly non-universal. Connections with th…
Fermionization is what happens to the state of strongly interacting repulsive bosons interacting with contact interactions in one spatial dimension. Crystallization is what happens for sufficiently strongly interacting repulsive bosons with dipolar interactions in one spatial dimension. Crystallization and fermionization resemble each other: in both cases -- due to their repulsion -- the bosons try to minimize their spatial overlap. We trace these two hallmark phases of strongly correlated one-dimensional bosonic systems by exploring their ground state properties using the one- and two-body de…
Periodic driving of a quantum (or classical) many-body system can alter the systems properties significantly and therefore has emerged as a promising way to engineer exotic quantum phases, such as topological insulators and discrete time crystals. A major limitation in such setups, is that generally interacting, driven systems will heat up over time and lose the desired properties. Understanding the relevant time scales is thus an important topic in the field and so far, there have only been few approaches to determine heating times for a concrete system quantitatively, and in a computationall…
We report on the condensation of bosons in the 4th band of an optical chequerboard lattice providing a topologically induced avoided band crossing involving the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Bloch bands. When the condensate is slowly tuned through the avoided crossing, accelerated band relaxation arises and the zero momentum approximately $C4$-invariant condensate wave function acquires finite momentum order and reduced $C2$ symmetry. For faster tuning Landau-Zener oscillations between different superfluid orders arise, which are used to characterize the avoided crossing.
We revisit the momentum independent many-body t-matrix approach for boson systems developed by Shi and Griffin~\cite{sg} and Bijlsma and Stoof~\cite{bs}. Despite its popularity, simplicity, and expected advantage of being its applicability to both normal and superfluid phases, we find that the theory breaks down in the normal phase of bosons. We conjecture that this failure is due to neglecting of momentum dependence on the t-matrix.
The two and three-body contacts are central to a set of univeral relations between microscopic few-body physics within an ultracold Bose gas and its thermodynamical properties. They may also be defined in trapped few-particle systems, which is the subject of this work. In this work, we focus on the unitary three-body problem in a trap, where interactions are as strong as allowed by quantum mechanics. We derive analytic results for the two and three-body contacts in this regime and compare with existing limiting expressions and previous numerical studies.
Using the adaptive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method, we numerically investigate the expansion dynamics of bosons in a one-dimensional hard-core boson model with three-body interactions. It is found that the bosons expand ballistically with weak interaction, which are obtained by local density and the radius $R_n$. It is shown that the expansion velocity $V$, obtained from $R_n=Vt$, is dependent on the number of bosons. As a prominent result, the expansion velocity decreases with the enhancement of three-body interaction. We further study the dynamics of the system, wh…
We demonstrate that many-body localization of two-dimensional weakly interacting bosons in disorder remains stable in the thermodynamic limit at sufficiently low temperatures. Highly energetic particles destroy the localized state only above a critical temperature, which increases with the strength of the disorder. If the particle distribution is truncated at high energies, as it does for cold atom systems, the localization can be stable at any temperature.
The linear-response theory of the multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree for bosons method for computing many-body excitations of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 88}, 023606 (2013)] is implemented for systems with general interparticle interaction. Illustrative numerical examples for repulsive and attractive bosons are provided. The many-body linear-response theory identifies the excitations not unraveled within Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations. The theory is herewith benchmarked against the exactly-solvable one-dimensional harmonic-interaction model. As a complementar…
We propose an efficient stepwise adiabatic merging (SAM) method to generate many-body singlet states in antiferromagnetic spin-1 bosons in concatenated optical superlattices with isolated double-well arrays, by adiabatically ramping up the double-well bias. With an appropriate choice of bias sweeping rate and magnetic field, the SAM protocol predicts a fidelity as high as 90% for a sixteen-body singlet state and even higher fidelities for smaller even-body singlet states. During their evolution, the spin-1 bosons exhibit interesting squeezing dynamics, manifested by an odd-even oscillation of …
Systems consisting of identical bosons with a large scattering length satisfy universal relations determined by 2-body physics that are similar to those for fermions with two spin states. They require the momentum distribution to have a large-momentum 1/k^4 tail and the radio-frequency transition rate to have a high-frequency 1/omega^{3/2} tail, both of which are proportional to the 2-body contact. Identical bosons also satisfy additional universal relations that are determined by 3-body physics and involve the 3-body contact, which measures the probability of 3 particles being very close toge…
The dynamics of many-body systems spanning condensed matter, cosmology, and beyond is hypothesized to be universal when the systems cross continuous phase transitions. The universal dynamics is expected to satisfy a scaling symmetry of space and time with the crossing rate, inspired by the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. We test this symmetry based on Bose condensates in a shaken optical lattice. Shaking the lattice drives condensates across an effectively ferromagnetic quantum phase transition. After crossing the critical point, the condensates manifest delayed growth of spin fluctuations and develop…
We develop an analytical many-body wave function to accurately describe the crossover of a one-dimensional bosonic system from weak to strong interactions in a harmonic trap. The explicit wave function, which is based on the exact two-body states, consists of symmetric multiple products of the corresponding parabolic cylinder functions, and respects the analytically known limits of zero and infinite repulsion for arbitrary number of particles. For intermediate interaction strengths we demonstrate, that the energies, as well as the reduced densities of first and second order, are in excellent a…
I consider non-relativistic bosons interacting via pairwise potentials with infinite scattering length and supporting no two-body bound states. To lowest order in effective field theory, these conditions lead to non-interacting bosons, since the coupling constant of the Lieb-Liniger model vanishes identically in this limit. Since any realistic pairwise interaction is not a mere delta function, the non-interacting picture is an idealisation indicating that the effect of interactions is weaker than in the case of off-resonant potentials. I show that the leading order correction to the ground sta…
The non-equilibrium dynamics of small boson ensembles in a one-dimensional optical lattice is explored upon a sudden quench of an additional harmonic trap from strong to weak confinement. We find that the competition between the initial localization and the repulsive interaction leads to a resonant response of the system for intermediate quench amplitudes, corresponding to avoided crossings in the many-body eigenspectrum with varying final trap frequency. In particular, we show that these avoided crossings can be utilized to prepare the system in a desired state. The dynamical response is show…
The role of an intrinsic four-body scale in universal few-boson systems is the subject of active debate. We study these systems within the framework of effective field theory. For systems of up to six bosons we establish that no four-body scale appears at leading order (LO). However, we find that at next-to-leading (NLO) order a four-body force is needed to obtain renormalized results for binding energies. With the associated parameter fixed to the binding energy of the four-boson system, this force is shown to renormalize the five- and six-body systems as well. We present an original ansatz f…
We calculate thermodynamic properties of soft-core lattice bosons with on-site $n$-body interactions using up to twelfth and tenth order strong coupling expansion in one and two dimensional cubic lattices at zero temperature. Using linked cluster techniques, we show that it is possible to exactly renormalize the two-body interactions for quasiparticle excitations and ground-state energy by resumming the three and four body terms in the system, which suggests that all higher-body on-site interactions may be exactly and perturbatively resummed into the two-body terms for similar system observabl…
A correlated many-body calculation is presented to characterize the Shannon information entropy of trapped interacting bosons. We reformulate the one-body Shannon information entropy in terms of the one-body probability density. The minimum limit of the entropy uncertainty relation (EUR) is approached by making $N$ very small in our numerical work. We examine the effect of correlations in the calculation of information entropy. Comparison with the mean-field result shows that the correlated basis function is indeed required to characterize the important features of the information entropies. W…
Basing on the analogy between the coherent states of light and separable states of $N$ bosons, we demonstrate that the violation Cauchy-Schwarz inequality for any-order correlation function signals the entanglement among the constituent particles. Rather than restricting to the correlations between the positions of particles, we consider the broadest set of measurements allowed by quantum mechanics. Our result is general -- it applies to any quantum system of bosons, even when the number of particles is not fixed, provided that there is no coherence between different number states. We also dem…
Wave-particle duality in quantum mechanics allows for a halo bound state whose spatial extension far exceeds a range of the interaction potential. What is even more striking is that such quantum halos can be arbitrarily large on special occasions. The two examples known so far are the Efimov effect and the super Efimov effect, which predict that spatial extensions of higher excited states grow exponentially and double exponentially, respectively. Here, we establish yet another new class of arbitrarily large quantum halos formed by spinless bosons with short-range interactions in two dimensions…
We apply the logic of the quench action to give an exact analytical expression for the time evolution of the one-body density matrix after an interaction quench in the Lieb-Liniger model from the ground state of the free theory (BEC state) to the infinitely repulsive regime. In this limit there exists a mapping between the bosonic wavefuntions and the free fermionic ones but this does not help the computation of the one-body density matrix which is sensitive to particle statistics. The final expression, given in terms of the difference of the square root of two Fredholm determinants, can be nu…
We investigate the ground state phase diagram of hard-core boson system with repulsive two-body and attractive three-body interactions in one-dimensional optic lattice. When these two interactions are comparable and increasing the hopping rate, physically intuitive analysis indicates that there exists an exotic phase separation regime between the solid phase with charge density wave order and superfluid phase. We identify these phases and phase transitions by numerically analyzing the density distribution, structure factor of density-density correlation function, three-body correlation functio…
We investigate the dynamical mode population statistics and associated first- and second-order coherence of an interacting bosonic two-mode model when the pair-exchange coupling is quenched from negative to positive values. It is shown that for moderately rapid second-order transitions, a new pair-coherent phase emerges on the positive coupling side in an excited state, which is not fragmented as the ground-state single-particle density matrix would prescribe it to be.
