I consider non-relativistic bosons interacting via pairwise potentials with infinite scattering length and supporting no two-body bound states. To lowest order in effective field theory, these conditions lead to non-interacting bosons, since the coupling constant of the Lieb-Liniger model vanishes identically in this limit. Since any realistic pairwise interaction is not a mere delta function, the non-interacting picture is an idealisation indicating that the effect of interactions is weaker than in the case of off-resonant potentials. I show that the leading order correction to the ground state energy for more than two bosons is accurately described by the lowest order three-body force in effective field theory that arises due to the off-shell structure of the two-body interaction. For natural two-body interactions with a short-distance repulsive core and an attractive tail, the emergent three-body interaction is repulsive and, therefore, three bosons do not form any bound states. This situation is analogous to the two-dimensional repulsive Bose gas, when treated using the lowest-order contact interaction, where the scattering amplitude exhibits an unphysical Landau pole. The avoidance of this state in the three-boson problem proceeds in a way that parallels the two-dimensional case. These results pave the way for the experimental realisation of one-dimensional Bose gases with pure three-body interactions using ultracold atomic gases.
The time-evolution of few number of interacting, harmonically confined one-dimensional bosons is numerically obtained for arbitrary two-body $δ-$potential interaction strengths. It is demonstrated that the period of the motion in a Newton's cradle configuration undergoes two crossovers as a function of interactions. Furthermore, through the evaluation of the structure factor, the dependence of Bragg-scattering peaks on the interaction strength ranging from the weak coupling regime to the impenetrable Tonks-Girardeau case is illustrated.
We investigate the dynamical mode population statistics and associated first- and second-order coherence of an interacting bosonic two-mode model when the pair-exchange coupling is quenched from negative to positive values. It is shown that for moderately rapid second-order transitions, a new pair-coherent phase emerges on the positive coupling side in an excited state, which is not fragmented as the ground-state single-particle density matrix would prescribe it to be.
The quantum dynamics of one-dimensional bosonic Josephson junctions with attractive and repulsive interparticle interactions is studied using the Bose-Hubbard model and by numerically-exact computations of the full many-body Hamiltonian. A symmetry present in the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian dictates an equivalence between the evolution in time of attractive and repulsive Josephson junctions with attractive and repulsive interactions of equal magnitude. The full many-body Hamiltonian does not possess this symmetry and consequently the dynamics of the attractive and repulsive junctions are differen…
We show that the dark soliton of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) that describes the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) density of a system of weakly repulsive bosons, also describes that of a system of strongly repulsive hard core bosons at half filling. This connection establishes a relationship between the GPE soliton and the magnetic soliton of an easy-plane ferromagnet, where the BEC density relates to the square of the in-plane magnetization of the system. This mapping between well known solitons in two distinct physical systems provides an intuitive understanding of various characteristi…
We explore the interplay between tunneling and interatomic interactions in the dynamics of a bosonic Josephson junction. We tune the scattering length of an atomic $^{39}$K Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a double-well trap to investigate regimes inaccessible to other superconducting or superfluid systems. In the limit of small-amplitude oscillations, we study the transition from Rabi to plasma oscillations by crossing over from attractive to repulsive interatomic interactions. We observe a critical slowing down in the oscillation frequency by increasing the strength of an attractive inte…
In these two papers, we solve the N body 1D harmonically trapped spinless Boson or spin 1/2 Fermions with repulsive delta function interaction in the limit $N\to \infty$.
Repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate, where the short-range interaction is included up to the third order by the interaction radius, demonstrates existence of a bright soliton in a narrow interval of parameters. This soliton is studied here for the boson-fermion mixture, where spin-1/2 fermions are consider in the regime of full spin polarization. Influence of fermions via the boson-fermion interaction is considered up to the third order by the interaction radius. Fermions themselves are considered by hydrodynamic model including the pressure evolution equation. Interaction between fermions is c…
Superfluid-insulator transitions in a one-dimensional mixture of two-color fermions and scalar bosons are studied within the framework of the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model. Zero-temperature phase diagrams are constructed for repulsive intraspecies interactions and attractive or repulsive interspecies couplings. In addition to the trivial Mott insulator phases, we report the emergence of new non-trivial insulator phases that depend on the sign of the boson-fermion interaction. These non-trivial insulator phases satisfy the conditions $ρ_B\pmρ_F=n$ and $ρ_B\pm \tfrac{1}{2}ρ_F=n$, with the plus (minus…
We study the phase diagram of repulsively interacting spin-1 bosons in optical lattices at unit filling, showing that an externally induced quadratic Zeeman effect may lead to a rich physics characterized by various phases and phase transitions. We find that the main properties of the system may be described by an effective field model, which provides the precise location of the phase boundaries for any dimension, being in excellent agreement with our numerical calculations for one-dimensional systems. Our work provides a quantitative guide for the experimental analysis of various types of fie…
In a mixture of two kinds of identical bosons there are two types of pairs, identical bosons' pairs, of either species, and pairs of distinguishable bosons. In the present work fragmentation of pairs in a trapped mixture of Bose-Einstein condensate is investigated using a solvable model, the symmetric harmonic-interaction model for mixtures. The natural geminals for pairs made of identical or distinguishable bosons are explicitly contracted by diagonalizing the intra-species and inter-species reduced two-particle density matrices, respectively. Properties of pairs' fragmentation in the mixture…
We demonstrate the possibility of creating a self-bound stable three-dimensional matter-wave spherical boson-fermion quantum ball in the presence of an attractive boson-fermion interaction and a small repulsive three-boson interaction. The three-boson interaction could be attractive or repulsive whereas the fermions are taken to be in a fully-paired super-fluid state in the Bardeen- Cooper-Schreifer ( quasi-noninteracting weak-coupling) limit. We also include the Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) correction to a repulsive bosonic interaction term. The repulsive three-boson interaction and the LHY correctio…
We study the decay of two repulsively interacting bosons tunneling through a delta potential barrier by direct numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The solutions are analyzed according to the regions of particle presence: both particles inside the trap (in-in), one particle in and one particle out (in-out), and both particles outside (out-out). It is shown that the in-in probability is dominated by exponential decay, and its decay rate is predicted very well from outgoing boundary conditions. Up to a certain range of interaction strength the decay of in-out probabilit…
Two generically different but universal dynamical quantum many-body behaviors are discovered by probing the stability of trapped fragmented bosonic systems with strong repulsive finite/long range inter-particle interactions. We use different time-dependent processes to destabilize the systems -- a sudden displacement of the trap is accompanied by a sudden quench of the strength of the inter-particle repulsion. A rather moderate non-violent evolution of the density in the first "topology-preserved" scenario is contrasted with a highly-non-equilibrium dynamics characterizing an explosive changes…
Using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations we study the quantum phase diagram, thermodynamics and criticality of one-dimensional spin-1 bosons with strongly repulsive density-density and antiferromagnetic spin-exchange interactions. We analytically derive a high precision equation of state from which the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid physics and quantum critical behavior of the system are computed. We obtain explicit forms for the scaling functions near the critical points yielding the dynamical exponent $z=2$ and correlation length exponent $ν=1/2$ for the quantum phase transitions driven by …
We investigate magnetism and quantum phase transitions in a one-dimensional system of integrable spin-1 bosons with strongly repulsive density-density interaction and antiferromagnetic spin exchange interaction via the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz method. At zero temperature, the system exhibits three quantum phases: (i) a singlet phase of boson pairs when the external magnetic field $H$ is less than the lower critical field $H_{c1}$; (ii) a ferromagnetic phase of atoms in the hyperfine state $|F=1, m_{F}=1>$ when the external magnetic field exceeds the upper critical field $H_{c2}$; and (iii) a…
Clarifying the interplay of interactions and disorder is fundamental to the understanding of many quantum systems, including superfluid helium in porous media, granular and thin-film superconductors, and light propagating in disordered media. One central aspect for bosonic systems is the competition between disorder, which tends to localize particles, and weak repulsive interactions, which instead have a delocalizing effect. Since the required degree of independent control of the disorder and of the interactions is not easily achievable in most available physical systems, a systematic experime…
For systems of identical Bosons, it is necessary to reformulate the notions of separability and entanglement in algebraic terms shifting the emphasis from the particle aspect of first quantization to the mode description typical of second quantization. Within this new framework, we show that, unlike for systems consisting of distinguishable qubits, negativity is an exhaustive bipartite entanglement witness for systems with fixed number of Bosons; further, we investigate the impact of dephasing noise in relation to the use of such many-body Bosonic systems in metrological applications.
Weak potential wells (or traps) in one and two dimensions, and the potential wells slightly deeper than the critical ones in three dimensions, feature shallow bound states with localization length much larger than the well radii. We address a simple fundamental question of how many repulsively interacting bosons can be localized by such traps. We find that under rather generic conditions, for both weakly and strongly repulsive particles, in two and three dimensions--but not in one-dimension!--the potential well can trap infinitely many bosons. For example, even hard-core repulsive interactions…
We investigate the properties of an impurity immersed in a dilute Bose gas at zero temperature using quantum Monte-Carlo methods. The interactions between bosons are modeled by a hard sphere potential with scattering length $a$, whereas the interactions between the impurity and the bosons are modeled by a short-range, square-well potential where both the sign and the strength of the scattering length $b$ can be varied by adjusting the well depth. We characterize the attractive and the repulsive polaron branch by calculating the binding energy and the effective mass of the impurity. Furthermore…
We show that the dark soliton of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) that describes the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) density of a system of weakly repulsive bosons, also describes that of a system of strongly repulsive hard core bosons at half filling. As a consequence of this, the GPE soliton gets related to the magnetic soliton in an easy-plane ferromagnet, where it describes the square of the in-plane magnetization of the system. These relationships are shown to be useful in understanding various characteristics of solitons in these distinct many-body systems.
The effect of strongly repulsive interactions on the tunneling amplitude of hard-sphere (HS) bosons confined in a simple cubic (sc) optical lattice plus tight external harmonic confinement in continuous space is investigated. The quantum variational Monte Carlo (VMC) and the variational path integral Monte Carlo (VPI) techniques are used at zero temperature. The effects of the lattice spacing $π/k$ on the tunneling amplitude is also considered. The occupancies of the lattice sites as a function of the repulsion between the bosons are further revealed. Our chief result is, that for a small numb…
The driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model can be experimentally realized with either negative or positive onsite detunings, inter-site hopping energies, and onsite interaction energies. Here we use one-dimensional matrix product density operators to perform a fully quantum investigation of the dependence of the non-equilibrium steady states of this model on the signs of these parameters. Due to a symmetry in the Lindblad master equation, we find that simultaneously changing the sign of the interaction energies, hopping energies, and chemical potentials leaves the local boson number distributio…
We study the system of multi-body interacting bosons on a two dimensional optical lattice and analyze the formation of bound bosonic pairs in the context of the Bose-Hubbard model. Assuming a repulsive two-body interaction we obtain the signatures of pair formation in the regions between the Mott insulator lobes of the phase diagram for different choices of higher order local interactions. Considering the most general Bose-Hubbard model involving local multi-body interactions we investigate the ground state properties utilizing the cluster mean-field theory approach and further confirm the res…
We investigate the mechanical instability toward density collapse and the transition temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation in the weakly coupled boson-fermion many-body mixture of single-component boson and fermion gases, in the case of the repulsive boson-boson and attractive boson-fermion interactions; no fermion-fermion interaction is assumed due to the Pauli exclusion because of the diluteness of the mixture. The mechanical instability occurs in the part of bosonic gas in the case where the induced boson-boson attraction mediated by the fermion polarization overcomes the boson-boson re…
The problem of an impurity particle moving through a bosonic medium plays a fundamental role in physics. However, the canonical scenario of a mobile impurity immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) has not yet been realized. Here, we use radio frequency spectroscopy of ultracold bosonic $^{39}$K atoms to experimentally demonstrate the existence of a well-defined quasiparticle state of an impurity interacting with a BEC. We measure the energy of the impurity both for attractive and repulsive interactions, and find excellent agreement with theories that incorporate three-body correlations, …
We analyse the ground-state properties of three-body constrained bosons in a one dimensional optical lattice with staggered hoppings analogous to the double well optical lattice. By considering attractive and repulsive on-site interactions between the bosons, we obtain the phase diagram which exhibits various quantum phases. Due to the double-well geometry and three-body constraint several gapped phases such as the Mott insulators and dimer/bond-order phases emerge at commensurate densities in the repulsive interaction regime. Attractive interaction leads to the pair formation which leads to t…
We model two bosons in an optical lattice near a Feshbach or photoassociation resonance, focusing on the Bose-Hubbard model in one dimension. Whereas the usual atoms-only theory with a tunable scattering length yields one bound state for a molecular dimer for either attractive or repulsive atom-atom interaction, an atom-molecule theory gives two bound states that may represent attractively and repulsively bound dimers occurring simultaneously. Such unusual molecular physics should be observable for an atom-molecule coupling strength comparable to the width of the dissociation continuum of the …
In this paper, we consider the bosonic t-J model, which describes two-component hard-core bosons with a nearest-neighbor (NN) pseudo-spin interaction and a NN hopping. To study phase diagram of this model, we derive effective field theories for low-energy excitations. In order to represent the hard-core nature of bosons, we employ a slave-particle representation. In the path-integral quantization, we first integrate our the radial degrees of freedom of each boson field and obtain the low-energy effective field theory of phase degrees of freedom of each boson field and an easy-plane pseudo-spin…
Path integral molecular dynamics (PIMD) has been successfully applied to perform simulations of large bosonic systems in a recent work (Hirshberg et al., PNAS, 116, 21445 (2019)). In this work we extend PIMD techniques to study Green's function for bosonic systems. We demonstrate that the development of the original PIMD method enables us to calculate Green's function and extract momentum distribution from our simulations. We also apply our method to systems of identical interacting bosons to study Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition around its critical temperature.
The Fredholm equations for one-dimensional two-component Fermions with repulsive and with attractive delta-function interactions are solved by an asymptotic expansion for A) strong repulsion, B) weak repulsion, C) weak attraction and D) strong attraction. Consequently, we obtain the first few terms of the expansion of ground state energy for the Fermi gas with polarization for these regimes. We also prove that the two sets of the Fredhom equations for weakly repulsive and attractive interactions are identical as long as the integration boundaries match each other between the two sides. Thus th…
We solve the three-boson problem with contact two- and three-body interactions in one dimension and analytically calculate the ground and excited trimer-state energies. Then, by using the diffusion Monte Carlo technique we calculate the binding energy of three dimers formed in a one-dimensional Bose-Bose or Fermi-Bose mixture with attractive interspecies and repulsive intraspecies interactions. Combining these results with our three-body analytics we extract the three-dimer scattering length close to the dimer-dimer zero crossing. In both considered cases the three-dimer interaction turns out …
We study a system of penetrable bosons embedded in a spherical surface. Under the assumption of weak interaction between the particles, the ground state of the system is, to a good approximation, a pure condensate. We employ thermodynamic arguments to investigate, within a variational ansatz for the single-particle state, the crossover between distinct finite-size "phases" in the parameter space spanned by the sphere radius and the chemical potential. In particular, for radii up to a few interaction ranges we examine the stability of the fluid phase with respect to a number of crystal-like arr…
Many-body effects are at the very heart of diverse phenomena found in condensed-matter physics. One striking example is the Mott insulator phase where conductivity is suppressed as a result of a strong repulsive interaction. Advances in cold atom physics have led to the realization of the Mott insulating phases of atoms in an optical lattice, mimicking the corresponding condensed matter systems. Here, we explore an exotic strongly-correlated system of Interacting Dual Mott Insulators of bosons and fermions. We reveal that an inter-species interaction between bosons and fermions drastically mod…
We consider a few number of identical bosons trapped in a 2D isotropic harmonic potential and also the $N$-boson system when it is feasible. The atom-atom interaction is modelled by means of a finite-range Gaussian interaction. The spectral properties of the system are scrutinized, in particular, we derive analytic expressions for the degeneracies and their breaking for the lower-energy states at small but finite interactions. We demonstrate that the degeneracy of the low-energy states is independent of the number of particles in the noninteracting limit and also for sufficiently weak interact…
In recent years, controlled dissipation has proven to be a useful tool for probing of a quantum system in the ultracold setup. In this paper we consider dynamics of bosons induced by a dissipative local defect. We address superfluid and supersolid phases close to half-filling that are ground states of an extended Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. To this end, we solve the master equation using the Gutzwiller approximation and find that in the superfluid phase repulsive nearest neighbour interactions can lead to enhanced dissipation processes. On the other hand, our mean-field approach indicates that t…
Systems consisting of identical bosons with a large scattering length satisfy universal relations determined by 2-body physics that are similar to those for fermions with two spin states. They require the momentum distribution to have a large-momentum 1/k^4 tail and the radio-frequency transition rate to have a high-frequency 1/omega^{3/2} tail, both of which are proportional to the 2-body contact. Identical bosons also satisfy additional universal relations that are determined by 3-body physics and involve the 3-body contact, which measures the probability of 3 particles being very close toge…
Four identical spinless bosons with purely attractive two-body short-range interactions and repulsive three-body interactions under external spherically symmetric harmonic confinement are considered. The repulsive three-body potential prevents the formation of deeply-bound states with molecular character. The low-energy spectrum with vanishing orbital angular momentum and positive parity for infinitely large two-body $s$-wave scattering length is analyzed in detail. Using the three-body contact, states are classified as universal, quasi-universal, or strongly non-universal. Connections with th…
We examine a system of three-bosons confined to two dimensions in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field within the framework of the adiabatic hyperspherical method. For the case of zero-range, regularized pseudo-potential interactions, we find that the system is nearly separable in hyperspherical coordinates and that, away from a set of narrow avoided crossings, the full energy eigenspectrum as a function of the 2D s-wave scattering length is well described by ignoring coupling between adiabatic hyperradial potentials. In the case of weak attractive or repulsive interactions, we find …
We study measurable quantities of bosonic and fermionic mixtures on a one-dimensional ring. These few-body ensembles consist of majority atoms obeying certain statistics (Fermi or Bose) and an impurity atom in a different hyperfine state. The repulsive interactions between majority-impurity and majority-majority are varied from weak to strong. We show that the majority-impurity repulsion is mainly responsible for the loss of coherence in the strongly interacting regime. The momentum distribution follows the $\mathcal{C}/p^4$ universal behaviour for the high momentum tail, but the contact $\mat…
We consider a system of N trapped bosons with repulsive interactions in a combined semiclassical mean-field limit at positive temperature. We show that the free energy is well approximated by the minimum of the Hartree free energy functional - a natural extension of the Hartree energy functional to positive temperatures. The Hartree free energy functional converges in the same limit to a semiclassical free energy functional, and we show that the system displays Bose-Einstein condensation if and only if it occurs in the semiclassical free energy functional. This allows us to show that for weak …
We investigate separations of trapped balanced two-component atomic Fermi gases with repulsive contact interaction. Candidates for ground-state densities are obtained from the imaginary-time evolution of a nonlinear pseudo-Schrödinger equation in three dimensions, rather than from the cumbersome variational equations. With the underlying hydrodynamical approach, gradient corrections to the Thomas-Fermi approximation are conveniently included and are shown to be vital for reliable density profiles. We provide critical repulsion strengths that mark the onset of phase transitions in a harmonic tr…
Quantum Monte Carlo simulations of a two-component Bose mixture of trapped dipolar atoms of identical masses and dipole moments, provide numerical evidence of de-mixing at low finite temperatures. De-mixing occurs as a consequence of quantum statistics, which results in an effective attraction between like bosons. Spatial separation of two components takes place at low temperature with the onset of long exchanges of identical particles, underlying Bose-Einstein condensation of both components. Conversely, at higher temperature the system is miscible due to the entropy of mixing. Exchanges are …
Three-body systems that are continuously squeezed from a three-dimensional (3D) space into a two-dimensional (2D) space are investigated. Such a squeezing can be obtained by means of an external confining potential acting along a single axis. However, this procedure can be numerically demanding, or even undoable, especially for large squeezed scenarios. An alternative is provided by use of the dimension $d$ as a parameter that changes continuously within the range $2\leq d \leq 3$. The simplicity of the $d$-calculations is exploited to investigate the evolution of three-body states after progr…
We consider a mixture of two bosonic species with tunable interspecies interaction in a periodic potential and discuss the advantages of low filling factors on the detection of the pair-superfluid phase. We show how the emergence of such a phase can be put dramatically into evidence by looking at the interference pictures and density correlations after expansion and by changing the interspecies interaction from attractive to repulsive.
We consider a finite number $N$ of interacting bosonic atoms at zero temperature confined in a one-dimensional double-well trap and study this system by using the two-site Bose-Hubbard (BH) Hamiltonian. For systems with $N=2$ and $N=3$, and $N=4$ bosons we analytically solve the eigenproblem associated to this Hamiltonian and find its lowest energetic state. We investigate the structure of the ground state by varying the strength of the boson-boson interaction from the strongly attractive regime to the deep repulsive one. We characterize the ground state of the two-site BH Hamiltonian by calcu…
We report the creation and the study of the stability of a repulsive quasi-homogeneous spin-$1/2$ Fermi gas with contact interactions. For the range of scattering lengths $a$ explored, the dominant mechanism of decay is a universal three-body recombination towards a Feshbach bound state. We observe that the recombination coefficient $K_3\propto ε_\text{kin} a^6$, where the first factor, the average kinetic energy per particle $ε_\text{kin}$, arises from a three-body threshold law, and the second one from the universality of recombination. Both scaling laws are consequences of Pauli blocking ef…
We study the ground state of two interacting bosonic particles confined in a ring-shaped lattice potential and subjected to a synthetic magnetic flux. The system is described by the Bose-Hubbard model and solved exactly through a plane-wave Ansatz of the wave function. We obtain energies and correlation functions of the system both for repulsive and attractive interactions. In contrast with the one-dimensional continuous theory described by the Lieb-Liniger model, in the lattice case we prove that the center of mass of the two particles is coupled with its relative coordinate. Distinctive feat…
The detailed mean-field treatment of the Bose polaron problem in two and three dimensions is presented. Particularly, assuming that impurity is immersed in the dilute Bose gas and interacts with bosons via the hard-sphere two-body potential, we calculate the low-momentum parameters of its spectrum, namely, the binding energy and the effective mass. The limits of applicability of the mean-field approach to a problem of mobile impurity in Bose-Einstein condensates are discussed by comparing our results to the Monte Carlo simulations data.
Small weakly-bound droplets determine a number of properties of ultracold Bose and Fermi gases. For example, Efimov trimers near the atom-atom-atom and atom-dimer thresholds lead to enhanced losses from bosonic clouds. Generalizations to four- and higher-body systems have also been considered. Moreover, Efimov trimers have been predicted to play a role in the Bose polaron with large boson-impurity scattering length. Motivated by these considerations, the present work provides a detailed theoretical analysis of weakly-bound $N$-body clusters consisting of $N-1$ identical bosons (denoted by "B")…
We consider two-dimensional imperfect attractive Fermi and repulsive Bose gases consisting of spinless point particles whose total interparticle interaction energy is represented by $a N^2/2 V$ with $a=-a_{F}\leq 0$ for fermions, and $a=a_{B}\geq 0$ for bosons. We show that in spite of the attraction the thermodynamics of $d=2$ imperfect Fermi gas remains well defined for $0 \leq a_{F}\leq a_{0}=h^2/2πm$, and is exactly the same as the one of the repulsive imperfect Bose gas with $a_{B}=a_{0}-a_{F}$. In particular, for $a_{F}=a_{0}$ one observes the thermodynamic equivalence of the attractive …
A harmonically trapped ultracold 1D spinor Fermi gas with a strongly attractive 1D even-wave interaction induced by a 3D Feshbach resonance is studied. It is shown that it has two different super Tonks-Girardeau (sTG) energy eigenstates which are metastable against collapse in spite of the strong attraction, due to their close connection with 1D hard sphere Bose gases which are highly excited gas-like states. One of these sTG states is a hybrid between an sTG gas with strong $(\uparrow\downarrow$ attractions and an ideal Fermi gas with no $(\uparrow\uparrow)$ or $(\downarrow\downarrow)$ intera…
