Superfluid-insulator transitions in a one-dimensional mixture of two-color fermions and scalar bosons are studied within the framework of the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model. Zero-temperature phase diagrams are constructed for repulsive intraspecies interactions and attractive or repulsive interspecies couplings. In addition to the trivial Mott insulator phases, we report the emergence of new non-trivial insulator phases that depend on the sign of the boson-fermion interaction. These non-trivial insulator phases satisfy the conditions $ρ_B\pmρ_F=n$ and $ρ_B\pm \tfrac{1}{2}ρ_F=n$, with the plus (minus) sign for repulsive (attractive) interactions and $n$ an integer. Far from fermionic half-filling, the boson-fermion interaction drives a gapless-gapped transition in the spin sector. Our findings could be observed experimentally in state-of-the-art cold-atom setups.
A superfluid-insulator transition is known to occur in strongly disordered Fermi gases, in both the BCS and BEC regimes; here, we address the properties of this transition across the BEC-BCS crossover. We argue that the critical disorder strength at which superfluidity is lost changes non-monotonically with detuning from Feshbach resonance, and that a reentrant superfluid phase arises for detunings near the fermionic mobility edge. Our analysis of the intermediate regime is quantitatively valid for narrow resonances and near four dimensions, and provides a simple physical picture of this regim…
A statistical model is advanced for describing quantum turbulence in a superfluid system with Bose-Einstein condensate. Such a turbulent superfluid can be realized for trapped Bose atoms subject to either an alternating trapping potential or to an alternating magnetic field modulating the atomic scattering length by means of Feshbach resonance. The turbulent system is represented as a continuous mixture of states each of which is characterized by its own vorticity corresponding to a particular vortex.
The superfluid mixture of interacting Bose and Fermi species is a remarkable many-body quantum system. Dilute degenerate atomic gases, especially for two species of distinct masses, are excellent candidates for exploring fundamental features of superfluid mixture. However, producing a mass-imbalance Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture, providing an unambiguous visual proof of two-species superfluidity and probing inter-species interaction effects remain challenging. Here, we report the realization of a two-species superfluid of lithium-6 and potassium-41. By rotating the dilute gases, we observe the…
In this paper, we studied a generalized Bose-Hubbard model on a checkerboard lattice with topologically nontrivial flat-band. We used mean-field method to decouple the model Hamiltonian and obtained phase diagram by Landau theory of second-order phase transition. We further calculate the energy gap and the dispersion of quasi-particle or quasi-hole in Mott insulator state and found that in strong interaction limit the quasi-particles or the quasi-holes also have flat bands.
We demonstrate many-body multifractality of the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian's ground state in Fock space, for arbitrary values of the interparticle interaction. Generalized fractal dimensions unambiguously signal, even for small system sizes, the emergence of a Mott insulator, that cannot, however, be naively identified with a localized phase in Fock space. We show that the scaling of the derivative of any generalized fractal dimension with respect to the interaction strength encodes the critical point of the superfluid to Mott insulator transition, and provides an efficient way to accurately est…
Dark solitons of ultracold bosons in the vicinity of the Mott-insulator--superfluid phase transition are studied. Making use of the Gutzwiller ansatz we have found antisymmetric eigenstates corresponding to standing solitons, as well as propagating solitons created by phase imprinting. Near the phase boundary, superfluidity has either a particle or a hole character depending on the system parameters, which greatly affects the characteristics of both types of solitons. Within the insulating Mott regions, soliton solutions are prohibited by lack of phase coherence between the lattice sites. Line…
We discuss quantum fluctuations of the interface between a superfluid and a Mott-insulating state of ultracold atoms in a trap. The fluctuations of the boundary are due to a new type of surface modes, whose spectrum is similar (but not identical) to classical capillary waves. The corresponding quantum capillary length sets the scale for the penetration of the superfluid into the Mott-insulating regime by the proximity effect and may be on the order of several lattice spacings. It determines the typical magnitude of the interface width due to quantum fluctuations, which may be inferred from sin…
The standard mean-field theory for the Mott insulator-superfluid phase transition is not sufficient to describe the Mott insulator-paired superfluid phase transition. Therefore, by restricting the two-species Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian to the subspace of paired particles, and using perturbation theory, here we derive an analytic mean-field expression for the Mott insulator-paired superfluid transition boundary.
Quantum gases in optical lattices offer an opportunity to experimentally realize and explore condensed matter models in a clean, tunable system. We investigate the Bose-Hubbard model on a microscopic level using single atom-single lattice site imaging; our technique enables space- and time-resolved characterization of the number statistics across the superfluid-Mott insulator quantum phase transition. Site-resolved probing of fluctuations provides us with a sensitive local thermometer, allows us to identify microscopic heterostructures of low entropy Mott domains, and enables us to measure loc…
The recent experimental realization of Bose-Fermi superfluid mixtures of dilute ultracold atomic gases has opened new perspectives in the study of quantum many-body systems. Depending on the values of the scattering lengths and the amount of bosons and fermions, a uniform Bose-Fermi mixture is predicted to exhibit a fully mixed phase, a fully separated phase or, in addition, a purely fermionic phase coexisting with a mixed phase. The occurrence of this intermediate configuration has interesting consequences when the system is nonuniform. In this work we theoretically investigate the case of so…
We model the superfluid to Mott insulator transition for a Bose gas on a lattice with two inequivalent sublattices. Using the Gutzwiller ansatz, we produce phase diagrams and provide an understanding of the interplay between superfluidity on each sublattice. We explore how the Mott lobes split, and describe the experimental signatures.
The Properties of the Mott insulator to superfluid phase transition are obtained through the fermionic approximation in the Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model on linear, square, SC, FCC, and BCC Bravais lattices. For varying excitation number and atom-cavity frequency detuning. We find that the Mott lobes and the critical hopping are not scalable only for the FCC lattice. At the large excitation number regime, the critical hopping is scalable for all the lattices and it does not depend on the detuning.
We observe evidence of first-order superfluid to Mott-insulator quantum phase transitions in a lattice-confined antiferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. The observed signatures include hysteresis effect and significant heatings across the phase transitions. The nature of the phase transitions is found to strongly depend on the ratio of the quadratic Zeeman energy to the spin-dependent interaction. Our observations are qualitatively understood by the mean field theory, and in addition suggest tuning the quadratic Zeeman energy is a new approach to realize superfluid to Mott-insulator …
We study the Landau damping in Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture at finite temperature. We find that at low temperature, the Landau damping rate will be exponentially suppressed at both the BCS side and the BEC side of Fermi superfluid. The momentum dependence of the damping rate is obtained, and it is quite different from the BCS side to the BEC side. The relations between our result and collective mode experiment in the recently realized Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture are also discussed.
Entanglement entropy (EE), a fundamental conception in quantum information for characterizing entanglement, has been extensively employed to explore quantum phase transitions (QPTs). Although the conventional single-site mean-field (MF) approach successfully predicts the emergence of QPTs, it fails to include any entanglement. Here, for the first time, in the framework of a cluster MF treatment, we extract the signature of EE in the bosonic superfluid-insulator transitions. We consider a trimerized Kagome lattice of interacting bosons, in which each trimer is treated as a cluster, and implemen…
We study the instability of a mixture of two interacting counter-flowing superfluids. For a homogeneous system, we show that superfluid hydrodynamics leads to the existence of a dynamical instability at a critical value of the relative velocity $v_{cr}$. When the interspecies coupling is small the critical value approaches the value $v_{cr}=c_1+c_2$, given by the sum of the sound velocities of the two uncoupled superfluids, in agreement with the recent prediction of [1] based on Landau's argument. The crucial dependence of the critical velocity on the interspecies coupling is explicitly discus…
Synthetic spin-orbit coupling in ultracold atomic gases can be taken to extremes rarely found in solids. We study a two dimensional Hubbard model of bosons in an optical lattice in the presence of spin-orbit coupling strong enough to drive direct transitions from Mott insulators to superfluids. Here we find phase-modulated superfluids with finite momentum that are generated entirely by spin-orbit coupling. We investigate the rich phase patterns of the superfluids, which may be directly probed using time-of-flight imaging of the spin-dependent momentum distribution.
We consider bosonic atoms in an optical lattice at integer filling, tuned to the superfluid-Mott insulator critical point, and coupled to a single, mobile impurity atom of a different species. This setup is inspired by current experiments with quantum gas microscopes, which enable tracking of the impurity motion. We describe the evolution of the impurity motion from quantum wave packet spread at short times, to Brownian diffusion at long times. This dynamics is controlled by the interplay between dangerously irrelevant perturbations at the strongly-interacting field theory describing the super…
Mott insulator to superfluid quenches have been used by recent experiments to generate exotic superfluid phases. While the final Hamiltonian following the sudden quench is that of a superfluid, it is not a priori clear how close the final state of the system approaches the ground state of the superfluid Hamiltonian. To understand the nature of the final state we calculate the temporal evolution of the momentum distribution following a Mott insulator to superfluid quench. Using the numerical infinite time-evolving block decimation approach and the analytical rotor model approximation we establi…
We study a single quantized vortex in the fermionic component of a mixture of Fermi superfluid and Bose-Einstein condensate. As the density ratio between the boson and the fermion components is tuned, we identify a transition in the vortex-core structure, across which fermions in the vortex core become completely depleted even in the weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer regime. This is accompanied by changes in key properties of the vortex state, as well as by the localization of the Bose-Einstein condensate in the vortex core. The transition in the vortex-core structure can be experimental…
Quantum criticality near a tricritical point (TCP) is studied in the two-component Bose-Hubbard model on square lattices. The existence of quantum TCP on a boundary of superfluid-insulator transition is confirmed by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Moreover, we analytically derive the quantum tricritical behaviors on the basis of an effective field theory. We find two significant features of the quantum tricriticality, that are the chemical potential dependence of the superfluid transition temperature and a strong density fluctuation. We suggest that these features are directly observable in e…
We study the quantum phase transition between the superfluid and the Mott insulator in the one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Hubbard model. Using the time-evolving block decimation method, we numerically calculate the tunneling splitting of two macroscopically distinct states with different winding numbers. From the scaling of the tunneling splitting with respect to the system size, we determine the critical point of the superfluid to Mott insulator transition for arbitrary integer filling factors. We find that the critical values versus the filling factor in 1D, 2D, and 3D are well approximated by a …
We consider a mixture of two bosonic species with tunable interspecies interaction in a periodic potential and discuss the advantages of low filling factors on the detection of the pair-superfluid phase. We show how the emergence of such a phase can be put dramatically into evidence by looking at the interference pictures and density correlations after expansion and by changing the interspecies interaction from attractive to repulsive.
By means of the method of the effective potential, the phase transitions from the Mott insulating state to either the atomic or the dimer superfluid state in the three-body constrained attractive Bose lattice gas are analyzed. Due to the appearance of the Feshbach resonance coupling between the two kinds of order parameters in the derived effective potential function, it is found that the continuous Mott insulator-to-superfluid transitions can be preempted by first-order ones. Since the employed approach can provide accurate predictions of phase boundaries in the strong coupling limit, where t…
We investigate the effect exerted by spin-polarized fermions on the interaction between superfluid bosons for a Bose-Fermi mixture residing on an optical lattice, with particular emphasis on the possibility of an induced phase-separation. Using a set of microscopic parameters relevant to a $^{40}$K-$^{87}$Rb mixture, we show how the phase-separation criterion may be directly probed by means of the critical superfluid velocity of the bosonic condensate. We report quantitative results for the magnitude of the superfluid velocity and its dependence on the trap depth, the boson-fermion interaction…
Motivated by the recent experiment on p-orbital band bosons in optical lattices, we study theoretically the quantum phases of Mott insulator and superfluidity in two-dimensions. The system features a novel superfluid phase with transversely staggered orbital current at weak interaction, and a Mott insulator phase with antiferro-orbital order at strong coupling and commensurate filling. We go beyond mean field theory and derive from a microscopic model an effective action that is capable of describing both the p-band Mott insulating and superfluid phases in strong coupling. We further calculate…
In this letter, to reveal the effect of quasi-particle interactions in a Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture, we consider the lifetime of quasi-particle of Bose superfluid due to its interaction with quasi-particles in Fermi superfluid. We find that this damping rate, i.e. inverse of the lifetime, has quite different threshold behavior at the BCS and the BEC side of the Fermi superfluid. The damping rate is a constant nearby the threshold momentum in the BCS side, while it increases rapidly in the BEC side. This is because in the BCS side the decay processe is restricted by constant density-of-state…
In this work, we present a theoretical study for the collective oscillation modes, i.e. quadrupole, radial and axial mode, of a mixture of Bose and Fermi superfluids in the crossover from a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in harmonic trapping potentials with cylindrical symmetry of experimental interest. To this end, we start from the coupled superfluid hydrodynamic equations for the dynamics of Bose-Fermi superfluid mixtures and use the scaling theory that has been developed for a coupled system. The collective oscillation modes of Bose…
Superconductivity and superfluidity of fermionic and bosonic systems are remarkable many-body quantum phenomena. In liquid helium and dilute gases, Bose and Fermi superfluidity has been observed separately, but producing a mixture in which both the fermionic and the bosonic components are superfluid is challenging. Here we report on the observation of such a mixture with dilute gases of two Lithium isotopes, 6Li and 7Li. We probe the collective dynamics of this system by exciting center-of-mass oscillations that exhibit extremely low damping below a certain critical velocity. Using high precis…
We investigate the critical behaviors of correlation length and critical exponents for strongly interacting bosons in a two-dimensional optical lattice via quantum Monte Carlo simulations. By comparing the full numerical results to those given by the effective theory, we quantitatively determine the critical regime where the universal scaling behaviors applies for both classical Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at a finite temperature and quantum phase transition from superfluid to Mott insulator. Our results show that the critical regime can be as large as a few lattice sites in opt…
We investigate the nature of the superfluid-insulator quantum phase transition driven by disorder for non-interacting ultracold atoms on one-dimensional lattices. We consider two different cases: Anderson-type disorder, with local energies randomly distributed, and pseudo-disorder due to a potential incommensurate with the lattice, which is usually called the Aubry-André model. A scaling analysis of numerical data for the superfluid fraction for different lattice sizes allows us to determine quantum critical exponents characterizing the disorder-driven superfluid-insulator transition. We also …
Non-Hermitian quantum many-body systems are a fascinating subject to be explored. Using the generalized density matrix renormalisation group method and complementary exact diagonalization, we elucidate the many-body ground states and dynamics of a 1D interacting non-Hermitian Aubry-Andre-Harper model for bosons. We find stable ground states in the superfluid and Mott insulating regimes under wide range of conditions in this model. We reveal a skin superfluid state induced by the non-Hermiticity from the nonreciprocal hopping. We investigate the topology of the Mott insulating phase and find it…
We report the observation of many-body interaction effects for a homonuclear bosonic mixture in a three-dimensional optical lattice with variable state dependence along one axis. Near the superfluid-to-Mott insulator transition for one component, we find that the presence of a second component can reduce the apparent superfluid coherence, most significantly when it either experiences a strongly localizing lattice potential or none at all. We examine this effect by varying the relative populations and lattice depths, and discuss the observed behavior in view of recent proposals for scattering f…
We apply the theory of inhomogeneous Kibble-Zurek mechanism to understand quench dynamics from the Mott insulator to the superfluid in a cold Bose gases confined in both a two-dimensional optical lattice and a harmonic trap. The local quench time and the freeze-out region associated with the nonadiabatic transition take a nontrivial positional dependence due to the Mott-lobe structure of the ground state phase diagram of the Bose-Hubbard model. We demonstrate that the quench dynamics through the time-dependent Gutzwiller simulations, revealing inhomogeneous properties of the growth of the supe…
We consider a mixture of two-component Fermi and (one-component) dipolar Bose gases in which both dipolar interaction and s-wave scattering between fermions of opposite spins are tunable. We show that in the long wavelength limit, the anisotropy in the Fermi-Fermi interaction induced by phonons of the dipolar condensate can strongly enhance the scattering in the triplet channel. We investigate in detail the conditions for achieving optimal critical temperature at which the triplet superfluid begins to compete with the singlet superfluid.
The p-wave superfluid is characterized by nontrivial topological characteristics essential for fault-tolerant quantum state manipulation. However, the practical realization of the p-wave state remains a challenging problem. We study the s- and p-wave superfluidity in mixtures of fermionic and spinor bosonic gases and derive a general set of the gap equations for these superfluid states. Numerically solving the gap equations for the s-wave state, we quantify the physical conditions for the realization of the pure p-wave state in a well-controlled environment of atomic physics in the absence of …
We reveal that the p-wave superfluid can be realized in a mixture of fermionic and F=1 bosonic gases. We derive a general set of the gap equations for gaps in the s- and p-channels. It is found that the spin-spin bose-fermi interactions favor the p-wave pairing and naturally suppress the pairing in the s-channel. The gap equations for the polar phase of p-wave superfluid fermions are numerically solved. It is shown that a pure p-wave superfluid can be observed in a well-controlled environment of atomic physics.
We perform a numeric study (Worm algorithm Monte Carlo simulations) of ultracold two-component bosons in two-dimensional optical lattices. We study how the Mott insulator to superfluid transition is affected by the presence of a second superfluid bosonic species. We find that, at fixed interspecies interaction, the upper and lower boundaries of the Mott lobe are differently modified. The lower boundary is strongly renormalized even for relatively low filling factor of the second component and moderate (interspecies) interaction. The upper boundary, instead, is affected only for large enough fi…
We investigate the structure and dynamics of a rotating superfluid Bose-Fermi mixture (SBFM) made of superfluid bosons and two-component (spin up and down) superfluid fermions. A ground-state phase diagram for the nonrotating case of a SBFM with specific parameters is given, where the ground-state configuration of a nonrotating SBFM is mainly determined by the boson-fermion interaction. For the rotating case of a SBFM with a sufficiently large rotation frequency, we show that the system supports a mixed phase and three typical layer separated phases. In particular, the visible vortex formation…
We show that the ultracold three-dimensional ${}^6$Li-${}^{40}$K mixture at unitarity can exhibit the highly exotic Larkin-Ovchinnikov superfluid phase. We determine the phase diagram for majorities of ${}^{40}$K atoms within mean-field theory taking the inhomogeneities of the fermion states into account exactly. We find two different inhomogeneous superfluid phases in mixtures with a majority of ${}^{40}$K atoms, namely the Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) phase with one inhomogeneous direction and a cubic phase (LO$^3$) where three spatial translational symmetries are broken. We determine the transit…
We report the first all-optical production of a superfluid Bose-Fermi mixture with two spin states of $^6$Li (fermion) and one spin state of $^7$Li (boson) under the resonant magnetic field of the s-wave Feshbach resonance of the fermions. Fermions are cooled efficiently by evaporative cooling and they serve as coolant for bosons. As a result, a superfluid mixture can be achieved by using a simple experimental apparatus and procedures, as in the case of the all-optical production of a single Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We show that the all-optical method enables us to realize variety of ul…
We examine two dimensional mixture of single-component fermions and dipolar bosons. We calculate the self-enregies of the fermions in the normal state and the Cooper pair channel by including first order vertex correction to derive a modified Eliashberg equation. We predict appearance of superfluids with various non-standard pairing symmetries at experimentally feasible transition temperatures within the strong-coupling limit of the Eliashberg equation. Excitations in these superfluids are anyonic and follow non-Abelian statistics.
It is common knowledge that a dark soliton can be excited in an ultra-cold atomic gas by means of the phase imprinting method. We show that, for a superfluid fermionic mixture, the standard phase imprinting procedure applied to both components fails to create a state with symmetry properties identical to those of the dark soliton solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. To produce a dark soliton in the BCS regime, a single component of the Fermi mixture should be phase imprinted only.
We investigate the zero-temperature phase diagram of interacting Bose gases in the presence of a simple cubic optical lattice, going beyond the regime where the mapping to the single-band Bose-Hubbard model is reliable. Our computational approach is a new hybrid quantum Monte Carlo method which combines algorithms used to simulate homogeneous quantum fluids in continuous space with those used for discrete lattice models of strongly correlated systems. We determine the critical interaction strength and optical lattice intensity where the superfluid-to-insulator transition takes place, consideri…
We study the quantum phases of one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures in optical lattices. Assuming repulsive interparticle interactions, equal mass, and unit total filling, we calculate the ground-state phase diagram by means of both Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory and time-evolving block decimation method. We demonstrate the existence of a counterflow superfluid (CFSF) phase of polaron pairs, which are composite particles consisting of two fermions and two bosonic holes, in a broad range of the parameter space. We find that this phase naturally emerges in $^{174}$Yb-$^{173}$Yb mixtures, realiz…
We study the two-dimensional weakly repulsive Bose gas at zero temperature in the presence of correlated disorder. Using large-scale simulations, we show that the low-energy Bogoliubov cumulative density of states remains quadratic up to a critical disorder strength, beyond which a power law with disorder-dependent exponent $β<2$ sets in. We associate this threshold behavior with the transition from superfluid to Bose glass, and compare the resulting mean-field phase diagram with scaling laws and the Thomas-Fermi percolation threshold of the mean-field density profile.
We study phase-imprinted solitons of ultracold bosons in an optical lattice with a harmonic trap, which shows the superfluid (SF) and Mott-insulator (MI) shell structures. The earlier study [Konstantin V. Krutitsky, J. Larson, and M. Lewenstein, Phys. Rev. A 82, 033618 (2010).] reported three types of phase-imprinted solitons in the Bose-Hubbard model: in-phase soliton, out-of-phase soliton, and wavelet. In this paper, we uncover the dynamical phase diagram of these phase-imprinted solitons, and find another type of the phase-imprinted soliton namely, the hybrid soliton. In the harmonically tr…
We study a linear ramp of the nearest-neighbor tunneling rate in the Bose-Hubbard model driving the system from the Mott insulator state into the superfluid phase. We employ the truncated Wigner approximation to simulate linear quenches of a uniform system in 1,2, and 3 dimensions, and in a harmonic trap in 3 dimensions. In all these setups the excitation energy decays like one over third root of the quench time. The -1/3 scaling arises from an impulse-adiabatic approximation - a variant of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism - describing a crossover from non-adiabatic to adiabatic evolution when the s…
The artificial magnetic fields engineered for ultra cold gases depend on the internal structure of the neutral atoms. Therefore the components of a mixture composed of two atomic gases can exhibit a different response to an artificial magnetic field. Such a mixture can be interpreted as a mixture of two atomic gases, carrying different synthetic charges. In this article, we consider such mixtures of two superfluids with unequal synthetic charges in a ring trap subject to a uniform artificial magnetic field. The charge imbalance in such a mixture changes the distribution of excited particles ov…
An iterative scheme based on the kernel polynomial method is devised for the efficient computation of the one-body density matrix of weakly interacting Bose gases within Bogoliubov theory. This scheme is used to analyze the coherence properties of disordered bosons in one and two dimensions. In the one-dimensional geometry, we examine the quantum phase transition between superfluid and Bose glass at weak interactions, and we recover the scaling of the phase boundary that was characterized using a direct spectral approach by Fontanesi et al. [Phys. Rev. A 81, 053603 (2010)]. The kernel polynomi…
We study two models realized by two-component Fermi gases loaded in optical lattices. We clarify that multi-band effects inevitably caused by the optical lattices generate a rich structure, when the systems crossover from the region of weakly bound molecular bosons to the region of strongly bound atomic bosons. Here the crossover can be controlled by attractive fermion interaction. One of the present models is a case with attractive fermion interaction, where an insulator-superfluid transition takes place. The transition is characterized as the transition between a band insulator and a Bose-Ei…
We use entanglement to track the superfluid-insulator transition (SIT) in disordered fermionic superfluids described by the one-dimensional Hubbard model. Entanglement is found to have remarkable signatures of the SIT driven by i) the disorder strength $V$, ii) the concentration of impurities $C$ and iii) the particle density $n$. Our results reveal the absence of a critical potential intensity on the SIT driven by $V$, i.e. any small $V$ suffices to decrease considerably the degree of entanglement: it drops $\sim 50\%$ for $V=-0.25t$. We also find that entanglement is non-monotonic with the c…
We propose a model to realize a fermionic superfluid state in an optical lattice circumventing the cooling problem. Our proposal exploits the idea of tuning the interaction in a characteristically low entropy state, a band-insulator in an optical bilayer system, to obtain a superfluid. By performing a detailed analysis of the model including fluctuations and augmented by a variational quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the ground state, we show that the superfluid state obtained has high transition temperature of the order of the hopping energy. Our system is designed to suppress other compet…
We study a mixture of two superfluids with density-density and current-current (Andreev-Bashkin) interspecies interactions. The Andreev-Bashkin coupling gives rise to a dissipationless drag (or entrainment) between the two superfluids. Within the quantum hydrodynamics approximation, we study the relations between speeds of sound, susceptibilities and static structure factors, in a generic model in which the density and spin dynamics decouple. Due to translational invariance, the density channel does not feel the drag. The spin channel, instead, does not satisfy the usual Bijl-Feynman relation,…
In this letter we show that the vortex lattice structure in the Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture can undergo a sequence of structure transitions when the Fermi superfluid is tuned from the BCS regime to the BEC regime. This is due to different vortex core structure of the Fermi superfluid in the BCS regime and in the BEC regime. In the former the vortex core is nearly filled, while the density at the vortex core gradually decreases until it empties out at the BEC regime. Therefore, with the density-density interaction between the Bose and the Fermi superfluids, the two sets of vortex lattices int…
We investigate the influence of density, interaction and harmonic confinement on the superfluid to insulator transition (SIT) in disordered fermionic superfluids described by the one-dimensional Hubbard model. We quantify the ground-state single-site entanglement via density-functional theory calculations of the linear entropy. We analyze the critical concentration $C_C$ at which the fully-localized state $-$ a special type of localization, with null entanglement $-$ emerges. We find that $C_C$ is independent on the interaction, but demands a minimum disorder strength to occur. We then derive …
We examine the effect of boson-fermion interaction in a one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixture by using the density matrix renormalization group method. We show that the boson superfluidity is enhanced by fermions for a weak boson-fermion coupling at an approximate integer boson filling factor (e.g., $0.935\le ρ_b \le 1.0$), and this enhancement is produced both in a fermion metallic state and in a fermion insulating state. A metal-insulator phase transition of fermions induced by boson-fermion interaction is observed even though there is no fermion-fermion interaction in the parent Hamiltonian. F…
We study transport dynamics of ultracold cesium atoms in a two-dimensional optical lattice across the superfluid-Mott insulator transition based on in situ imaging. Inducing the phase transition with a lattice ramping routine expected to be locally adiabatic, we observe a global mass redistribution which requires a very long time to equilibrate, more than 100 times longer than the microscopic time scales for on-site interaction and tunneling. When the sample enters the Mott insulator regime, mass transport significantly slows down. By employing fast recombination pulses to analyze the occupanc…
We present numerical evidence from Monte Carlo simulations that the superfluid-insulator quantum phase transition of interacting bosons subject to strong disorder in one dimension is controlled by the strong-randomness critical point. At this critical point the distribution of superfluid stiffness over disorder realizations develops a power-law tail reflecting a universal distribution of weak links. The Luttinger parameter on the other hand does not take on a universal value at this critical point, in marked contrast to the known Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like superfluid-insulator transi…
