We study the few-body dynamics of dipolar bosons in one-dimensional double-wells. Increasing the interaction strength, by investigating one-body observables, we study in the considered few-body systems tunneling oscillations, self-trapping and the regime exhibting an equilibrating behaviour. The corresponding two-body correlation dynamics exhibits a strong interplay between the interatomic correlation due to non-local nature of the repulsion and the inter-well coherence. We also study the link between the correlation dynamics and the occupation of natural orbitals of the one-body density matrix.
We suggest a time-dependent mean-field hydrodynamic model for a binary dipolar boson-fermion mixture to study the stability and collapse of fermions in the $^{164}$Dy-$^{161}$Dy mixture. The condition of stability of the dipolar mixture is illustrated in terms of phase diagrams. A collapse is induced in a disk-shaped stable binary mixture by jumping the interspecies contact interaction from repulsive to attractive by the Feshbach resonance technique. The subsequent dynamics is studied by solving the time-dependent mean-field model including three-body loss due to molecule formation in boson-fe…
Spinor bosons offer conceptually simple picture of macroscopic quantum behavior of topological order-by-disorder: Paramagnetic state of two-component dipolar bosons in orbitally degenerate zig-zag lattice is unstable against infinitezimal quantum fluctuations of orbitals towards developing non-local hidden order. Adjacent to the topological state locally correlated exact ground state with spontaneously quadrupoled lattice constant is realized for the broad parameter regime.
We investigate the ground state properties of a polarized dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a triple-well potential. By solving the dipolar Gross-Pitaevskii equation numerically for different geometries we identify states which reveal the non-local character of the interaction. Depending on the strength of the contact and dipolar interaction we depict the stable and unstable regions in parameter space.
This article reviews the recent theoretical and experimental advances in the study of ultracold gases made of bosonic particles interacting via the long-range, anisotropic dipole-dipole interaction, in addition to the short-range and isotropic contact interaction usually at work in ultracold gases. The specific properties emerging from the dipolar interaction are emphasized, from the mean-field regime valid for dilute Bose-Einstein condensates, to the strongly correlated regimes reached for dipolar bosons in optical lattices.
We present a study that investigated a quantum dipolar gas in continuous space where a potential lattice was imposed. Employing exact quantum Monte Carlo techniques, we analysed the ground state properties of the scrutinised system, varying the lattice depth and the dipolar interaction. For system densities corresponding to a commensurate filling with respect to the optical lattice, we observed a simple crystal-to-superfluid quantum phase transition, being consistent with the physics of dipolar bosons in continuous space. In contrast, an incommensurate density showed the presence of a supersol…
We consider a two-mode atomic Josephson junction realized with dilute dipolar bosons confined by a double-well. We employ the two-site extended Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian and characterize the ground-state of this system by the Fisher information, coherence visibility, and entanglement entropy. These quantities are studied as functions of the interaction between bosons in different wells. The emergence of Schroedinger-cat like state with a loss of coherence is also commented.
We study the scissors modes of dipolar boson and fermion gases trapped in a spherically symmetric potential. We use the harmonic oscillator states to solve the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation for bosons and the time-dependent Hartree-Fock equation for fermions. It is pointed out that the scissors modes of bosons and fermions can be of quite different nature.
In a recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 185304 (2013)], we proposed a scheme for realizing quantum quasicrystals using spin-orbit coupled dipolar bosons. We remarked that these quantum quasicrystals have additional ``phason''-like modes compared with their classical counterparts. A recent comment by Lifshitz [arXiv:1312.1388] contests this claim. We argue here that our enumeration of gapless modes is indeed the physically relevant one; whether the additional modes are ``phasons'' is, however, a matter of definition.
Crystallization is a generic phenomenon in classical and quantum mechanics arising in a variety of physical systems. In this work we focus on a specific platform, ultracold dipolar bosons, which can be realized in experiments with dilute gases. We review the relevant ingredients leading to crystallization, namely the interplay of contact and dipole-dipole interactions and system density, as well as the numerical algorithm employed. We characterize the many-body phases investigating correlations and superfluidity.
We study the effects of dipolar interactions on a Bose-Einstein condensate with synthetically generated Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The dipolar interaction we consider includes terms that couple spin and orbital angular momentum in a way perfectly congruent with the single-particle Rashba coupling. We show that this internal spin-orbit coupling plays a crucial role in the rich ground-state phase diagram of the trapped condensate. In particular, we predict the emergence of a thermodynamically stable ground state with a meron spin configuration.
We study the role of the Dipolar-Induced Resonance (DIR) in a quasi-one-dimensional system of ultracold bosons. We first describe the effect of the DIR on two particles in a harmonic trap. Then, we consider a deep optical lattice loaded with ultracold dipolar bosons. In order to describe this system, we introduce a novel atom-dimer extended Bose-Hubbard model, which is the minimal model correctly accounting for the DIR. We analyze the impact of the DIR on the phase diagram at T=0 by exact diagonalization of a small-sized system. We show that the DIR strongly affects this phase diagram. In part…
We present the theoretical mean-field zero-temperature phase diagram of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with dipolar interactions loaded into an optical lattice with a staggered flux. Apart from uniform superfluid, checkerboard supersolid and striped supersolid phases, we identify several supersolid phases with staggered vortices, which can be seen as combinations of supersolid phases found in earlier work on dipolar BECs and a staggered-vortex phase found for bosons in optical lattices with staggered flux. By allowing for different phases and densities on each of the four sites of the elemen…
We consider a bilayer of dipolar bosons in which the polarization of dipoles are perpendicular to the planes. Using accurate static structure factor $S(q)$ data from hypernetted-chain calculation for single layer dipolar bosons we construct effective screened interactions for intralayer particles. We adopt the random-phase approximation for interlayer interactions. We study the instability of the homogeneous bilayer system against the formation of density waves by investigating the poles of the density-density response function. The dispersion of collective modes of this system also signals th…
Mesoscopic samples of polarized dipolar atoms confined in three spatially separated traps conform an extended Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian in which different quantum phases appear depending on the competition between tunneling, on-site and long range inter-site dipole-dipole interactions. Here, by choosing an appropriate configuration of triple-wells, we analyze the role played by the anisotropic character inherent to the dipolar interaction in the phase diagram of the system. We further characterize the different phases as well as their boundaries by means of their entanglement properties.
We propose a new scheme for observing Josephson oscillations and macroscopic quantum self-trapping phenomena in a toroidally confined Bose-Einstein condensate: a dipolar self-induced Josephson junction. Polarizing the atoms perpendicularly to the trap symmetry axis, an effective ring-shaped, double-well potential is achieved which is induced by the dipolar interaction. By numerically solving the three-dimensional time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation we show that coherent tunneling phenomena such as Josephson oscillations and quantum self-trapping can take place. The dynamics in the self-in…
As dipolar gases become more readily accessible in experiment there is a need to develop a comprehensive theoretical framework of the few-body physics of these systems. Here, we extend the coupled-pair approach developed for the unitary two-component Fermi gas to a few-body system of dipolar bosons in a spherical harmonic trap. The long range and anisotropy of the dipole-dipole interaction is handled by a flexible and efficient correlated gaussian basis with stochastically variational optimisation. We calculate the eigenenergy spectrum and structural properties of two and three trapped bosonic…
We study by first principle computer simulations the low temperature phase diagram of bosonic dipolar gases in a bilayer geometry, as a function of the two control parameters, i.e., the in-plane density and the interlayer distance. We observe four distinct phases, namely paired and decoupled superfluids, as well as a crystal of dimers and one consisting of two aligned crystalline layers. A direct quantum phase transition from a dimer crystal to two independent superfluids is observed in a relatively wide range of parameters. No supersolid phase is predicted for this system.
Quantum Monte Carlo simulations of a two-component Bose mixture of trapped dipolar atoms of identical masses and dipole moments, provide numerical evidence of de-mixing at low finite temperatures. De-mixing occurs as a consequence of quantum statistics, which results in an effective attraction between like bosons. Spatial separation of two components takes place at low temperature with the onset of long exchanges of identical particles, underlying Bose-Einstein condensation of both components. Conversely, at higher temperature the system is miscible due to the entropy of mixing. Exchanges are …
Probing the radial collective oscillation of a trapped quantum system is an accurate experimental tool to investigate interactions and dimensionality effects. We consider a fully polarized quasi-one dimensional dipolar quantum gas of bosonic dysprosium atoms in a parabolic trap at zero temperature. We model the dipolar gas with an effective quasi-one dimensional Hamiltonian in the single-mode approximation, and derive the equation of state using a variational approximation based on the Lieb-Liniger gas Bethe Ansatz wavefunction or perturbation theory. We calculate the breathing mode frequencie…
We study the Josephson oscillation and self trapping dynamics of a cigar-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate of $^{52}$Cr atoms polarized along the symmetry axis of an axially-symmetric double-well potential using the numerical solution of a mean-field model, for dominating repulsive contact interaction (large positive scattering length a) over an anisotropic dipolar interaction. Josephson-type oscillation emerges for small and very large number of atoms, whereas self trapping is noted for an intermediate number of atoms. The dipolar interaction pushes the system away from self trapping to…
We explore the groundstates of a few dipolar bosons in optical lattices with incommensurate filling. The competition of kinetic, potential, and interaction energies leads to the emergence of a variety of crystal state orders with characteristic one- and two-body densities. We probe the transitions between these orders and construct the emergent state diagram as a function of the dipolar interaction strength and the lattice depth. We show that the crystal state orders can be observed using the full distribution functions of the particle number extracted from simulated single-shot images.
We explore the ground-state properties of bosons with dipole-dipole interactions in a one-dimensional optical lattice. Remarkably, a crystallization process happens for strong dipolar interactions. Herein, we provide a detailed characterization and a way to measure the resulting crystal phase. Using the eigenvalues of the reduced one-body density matrix we define an order parameter that yields a phase diagram in agreement with an analysis of the density and two-body density. We demonstrate that the phase diagram can be detected experimentally using the variance of single-shot measurements.
The properties of ultracold quantum gases of bosons with dipole-dipole interaction is investigated at finite temperature in the frame of the representative ensembles theory. Self-consistent coupled equations of motion are derived for the condensate and the non-condensate components. Corrections due to the dipolar interaction to the condensate depletion, the anomalous density and thermodynamic quantities such as the ground state energy, the equation of state, the compressibility and the presure are calculated in the homogeneous case at both zero and finite temperatures. Effects of interaction a…
We investigate a system of dipolar bosons in an optical lattice with local two and three-body interactions. Using the mean-field theory approach, we obtain the ground state phase diagram of the extended Bose-Hubbard (EBH) model with both repulsive and attractive three-body interac- tions. We show that the additional three-body on-site interaction has strong effects on the phase diagram especially on the supersolid phase. Positive values of the three-body interaction lead to the enhancement of the gapped phases at densities larger than unity by reducing the supersolid region. However, a small a…
In this paper, we study phase diagrams of dipolar hard-core boson gases on the honeycomb lattice. The system is described by the Haldane-Bose-Hubbard model with complex hopping amplitudes and the nearest neighbor repulsion. By using the slave-particle representation of the hard-core bosons and also the path-integral quantum Monte-Carlo simulations, we investigate the system and to show that the systems have a rich phase diagram. There are Mott, superfluid, chiral superfluid, and sublattice chiral superfluid phases as well as the density-wave phase. We also found that there exists a coexisting …
We study the dynamics of dipolar bosons in an external harmonic trap. We monitor the time evolution of the occupation in the natural orbitals and normalized first- and second-order Glauber's correlation functions. We focus in particular on the relaxation dynamics of the Shannon entropy. Comparison with the corresponding results for contact interactions is presented. We observe significant effects coming from the presence of the non-local repulsive part of the interaction. The relaxation process is very fast for dipolar bosons with a clear signature of a truly saturated maximum entropy state. W…
Recent experimental advances in creating stable dipolar bosonic systems, including polar molecules with large electric dipole moments, have led to vigorous theoretical activities. Recent reporting of observation of roton feature in dipolar erbium has provided added impetus to theoretical and experimental work. Here we discuss our mean-field theory work on 2D and quasi-2D dipolar bosons with dipoles oriented at an angle to the direction perpendicular to the confining 2D plane, i.e. for {\it non-zero tilt angles}. Using Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, we present results on a number of T=0 proper…
We present a quantum Monte Carlo study of the one-body density matrix (OBDM) and the momentum distribution of one-dimensional dipolar bosons, with dipole moments polarized perpendicular to the direction of confinement. We observe that the long-range nature of the dipole interaction has dramatic effects on the off-diagonal correlations: although the dipoles never crystallize, the system goes from a quasi-condensate regime at low interactions to a regime in which quasi-condensation is discarded, in favor of quasi-solidity. For all strengths of the dipolar interaction, the OBDM shows an oscillato…
Strongly interacting dipolar bosons in optical lattices exhibit diverse quantum phases that are rich in physics. As the strength of the long-range boson-boson interaction increases, the system transitions across different phases: from a superfluid, through a Mott-insulator to a Tonks gas and, eventually, a crystal state. The signature of these phases and their transitions can be unequivocally identified by an experimentally detectable order parameter, recently described in arXiv:1708.07409. Herein, we calculate the momentum distributions and the normalized Glauber correlation functions of dipo…
We systematically investigate the zero temperature phase diagram of bosons interacting via dipolar interactions in three dimensions in free space via path integral Monte Carlo simulations with few hundreds of particles and periodic boundary conditions based on the worm algorithm. Upon increasing the strength of the dipolar interaction and at sufficiently high densities we find a wide region where filaments are stabilized along the direction of the external field. Most interestingly by computing the superfluid fraction we conclude that superfluidity is anisotropic and is greatly suppressed alon…
We consider the ground state of a bilayer system of dipolar bosons, where dipoles are oriented by an external field in the direction perpendicular to the parallel planes. Quantum Monte Carlo methods are used to calculate the ground-state energy, the one-body and two-body density matrix, and the superfluid response as a function of the separation between layers. We find that by decreasing the interlayer distance for fixed value of the strength of the dipolar interaction, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition from a single-particle to a pair superfluid. The single-particle superfluid i…
The concept of spontaneous symmetry breaking and off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO) are associated with Bose-Einstein condensation. However, as in the system of reduced dimension the effect of quantum fluctuation is dominating, the concept of ODLRO becomes more interesting, especially for the long-range interaction. In the present manuscript, we study the correlation dynamics triggered by lattice depth quench in a system of three dipolar bosons in a 1D triple-well optical lattice from the first principle using the multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree method for bosons (MCTDHB). Our m…
We investigate a system of two- and three-body constrained dipolar bosons in a pair of one-dimensional optical lattices coupled to each other by the non-local dipole-dipole interactions. Assuming attractive dipole-dipole interactions, we obtain the ground state phase diagram of the system by employing the cluster mean-field theory. The competition between the repulsive on-site and attractive nearest-neighbor interactions between the chains yields three kinds of superfluids; namely the trimer superfluid, pair superfluid and the usual single particle superfluid along with the insulating Mott pha…
Strongly interacting systems of dipolar bosons in three dimensions confined by harmonic traps are analyzed using the exact Path Integral Ground State Monte Carlo method. By adding a repulsive two-body potential, we find a narrow window of interaction parameters leading to stable ground- state configurations of droplets in a crystalline arrangement. We find that this effect is entirely due to the interaction present in the Hamiltonian without resorting to additional stabilizing mechanisms or specific three-body forces. We analyze the number of droplets formed in terms of the Hamiltonian paramet…
The energy of ultra-dilute quantum many-body systems is known to exhibit a universal dependence on the gas parameter $x=n a_0^d$, with $n$ the density, $d$ the dimensionality of the space ($d=1,2,3$) and $a_0$ the $s$-wave scattering length. The universal regime typically extends up to $x\approx 0.001$, while at larger values specific details of the interaction start to be relevant and different model potentials lead to different results. Dipolar systems are peculiar in this regard since the anisotropy of the interaction makes $a_0$ depend on the polarization angle $α$, so different combinatio…
We analyze the ground state of a system of dipolar bosons moving in the $XY$ plane and such that their dipolar moments are all aligned in a fixed direction in space. We focus on the general case where the polarization field forms a generic angle $α$ with respect to the $Z$ axis. We use the Path Integral Ground State method to analyze the static properties of the system as both $α$ and the density $n$ vary over a wide range were the system is stable. We use the maximum of the static structure function as an order parameter to characterize the different phases and the transition lines among them…
We directly compare the mean-field and the many-body approach in a one-dimensional Bose system in a harmonic trap. Both contact and dipolar interactions are considered. We propose a multi-atom version of the phase imprinting method to generate dark solitons in the system. We begin with a general analysis of system dynamics and observe the emergence of a dark soliton and a shock wave. Center of mass and soliton motion become decoupled because the shock wave oscillates with the trap frequency and soliton does not. A detailed investigation of frequencies reveals significant differences between re…
We systematically study the properties of dipolar Bose gases with two- and three-body contact interactions at finite temperature using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov-Popov approximation. In uniform case, we obtain an exciting new extension of the seminal Lee-Huang-Yang corrected equation of state that depends explicitly on the thermal fluctuations and on the coupling constant of the three-body interaction. We investigate, on the other hand, the effects of thermal fluctuations on the occurrence and stability of a droplet state in a Bose-Einstein condensate with strong dipole-dipole interactions. W…
We study quasi-two-dimensional dipolar Bose gases in which the bosons experience a Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We show that the degenerate dispersion minimum due to the spin-orbit coupling, combined with the long-range dipolar interaction, can stabilize a number of quantum crystalline and quasicrystalline ground states. Coupling the bosons to a fermionic species can further stabilize these phases. We estimate that the crystalline and quasicrystalline phases should be detectable in realistic dipolar condensates, e.g., dysprosium, and discuss their symmetries and excitations.
We identify the quantum phases in a binary mixture of dipolar bosons in two-dimensional optical lattices. Our study is motivated by the recent experimental realization of binary dipolar condensate mixtures of Er-Dy [Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 213601 (2018)]. We model the system by using the extended two-species Bose-Hubbard model and calculate the ground-state phase diagrams by using mean-field theory. For selected cases we also obtain analytical phase boundaries by using the site-decoupled mean-field theory. For comparison we also examine the phase diagram of two-species Bose-Hubbard model. Our re…
We investigate the ground state properties and tunneling dynamics of ultracold dipolar bosons in a one dimensional triple well trap from a few-body ab-initio perspective. Our focus is primarily on the distinctive features of dipolar bosons compared to the contact interacting bosons. Formation of intra-well localization is observed for very strong dipolar interaction. General population rearangement as well as fragmentation and localization effects have been found, depending strongly on the particle number. The energy spectrum for two particles exhibits avoided crossings that lead to several di…
Ground-state properties of a two-dimensional fluid of bosons with repulsive dipole-dipole interactions are studied by means of the Euler-Lagrange hypernetted-chain approximation. We present a self-consistent semi-analytical theory of the pair distribution function $g(r)$ and ground-state energy of this system. Our approach is based on the solution of a zero-energy scattering Schrödinger equation for the "pair amplitude" $\sqrt{g(r)}$ with an effective potential from Jastrow-Feenberg correlations. We find excellent agreement with quantum Monte Carlo results over a wide range of coupling strengt…
We study the topological phases in spin-orbit coupled dipolar bosons in a one-dimensional optical lattice. The magnetic dipolar interactions between atoms give rise to the inter-site interactions. In the Mott-insulating regime, this system can be described by the quantum XYZ spin model with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in a transverse field. We focus on investigating the effect of dipolar interactions on the topological phase. The topological phase can be shown when spin-orbit coupling incorporates with the repulsive dipolar interaction. We find that the dipolar interaction can broad…
We propose a scheme for precise control of tunneling dynamics of dipolar bosons in shaken triple-well potentials. In the high-frequency regimes and under the resonance conditions, we have analytically and numerically demonstrated that we can transport a priori prescribed number of dipolar bosons along different pathways and different directions by adjusting the driving parameters. These results extend the previous many-body selective coherent destruction of tunneling (CDT) schemes for nondipolar bosons in double-well potentials[Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 133002 (2009); Phys. Rev. A 86, 044102 (2012…
We investigate the quench dynamics of the dipolar bosons in two dimensional optical lattice of square geometry using the time dependent Gutzwiller method. The system exhibits different density orders like the checkerboard and the striped pattern, depending upon the polarization angle of the dipoles. We quench the hopping parameter across the striped density wave (SDW) to striped supersolid (SSS) phase transition, and obtain the scaling laws for the correlation length and topological vortex density, as function of the quench rate. The results are reminiscent of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM).…
We propose a variational approximation to the ground state energy of a one-dimensional gas of interacting bosons on the continuum based on the Bethe Ansatz ground state wavefunction of the Lieb-Liniger model. We apply our variational approximation to a gas of dipolar bosons in the single mode approximation and obtain its ground state energy per unit length. This allows for the calculation of the Tomonaga-Luttinger exponent as a function of density and the determination of the structure factor at small momenta. Moreover, in the case of attractive dipolar interaction, an instability is predicted…
We investigate the quantum phases of hard-core dipolar bosons confined to a square lattice in a bilayer geometry. Using exact theoretical techniques, we discuss the many-body effects resulting from pairing of particles across layers at finite density, including a novel pair supersolid phase, superfluid and solid phases. These results are of direct relevance to experiments with polar molecules and atoms with large magnetic dipole moments trapped in optical lattices.
We consider a minimal model to investigate the quantum phases of hardcore, polarized dipolar atoms confined in multilayer optical lattices. The model is a variant of the extended Bose-Hubbard model, which incorporates intralayer repulsion and interlayer attraction between the atoms in nearest-neighbour sites. We study the phases of this model emerging from the competition between the attractive interlayer interaction and the interlayer hopping. Our results from the analytical and cluster-Gutzwiller mean-field theories reveal that multimer formation occurs in the regime of weak intra and interl…
