Within the rigorous axiomatic framework for the description of quantum mechanical systems with a large number of degrees of freedom, we construct the so-called nonequilibrium steady state for the quasifree fermionic system corresponding to the isotropic XY chain in which a finite sample, subject to a local gauge breaking anisotropy perturbation, is coupled to two thermal reservoirs at different temperatures. Using time dependent and stationary scattering theory, we rigorously prove, from first principles, that the nonequilibrium system under consideration is thermodynamically nontrivial, i.e., that its entropy production rate is strictly positive.
We consider the quantised free Dirac field on oriented and globally hyperbolic ultrastatic slab spacetimes with compact spatial section and demonstrate how a gauge invariant, pure and quasifree state on the C*-completion of the self-dual CAR-algebra can be extracted from the fermionic projector construction of Finster and Reintjes. This state is analogous to the "SJ-state" of the free scalar field recently discussed in the literature. We prove that this state generically fails to be Hadamard. However, we also show how a modified version of the construction, inspired by work of Brum and Fredenh…
With the help of time-dependent scattering theory on the observable algebra of infinitely extended quasifree fermionic chains, we introduce a general class of so-called right mover/left mover states which are inspired by the nonequilibrium steady states for the prototypical nonequilibrium configuration of a finite sample coupled to two thermal reservoirs at different temperatures. Under the assumption of spatial translation invariance, we relate the 2-point operator of such a right mover/left mover state to the asymptotic velocity of the system and prove that the system is thermodynamically no…
Using the C* algebraic scattering approach to study quasifree fermionic systems out of equilibrium in quantum statistical mechanics, we construct the nonequilibrium steady state in the isotropic XY chain whose translation invariance has been broken by a local magnetization and analyze the asymptotic behavior of the expectation value for a class of spatial correlation observables in this state. The effect of the breaking of translation invariance is twofold. Mathematically, the finite rank perturbation not only regularizes the scalar symbol of the invertible Toeplitz operator generating the lea…
We study the relative entropy, in the sense of Araki, for the representation of a self-dual CAR algebra $\mathfrak{A}_{SDC}(\mathcal{H},Γ)$. We notice, for a specific choice of $f \in \mathcal{H}$, that the associated element in $\mathfrak{A}_{SDC}(\mathcal{H},Γ)$ is unitary. As a consequence, we explicitly compute the relative entropy between a quasifree state over $\mathfrak{A}_{SDC}(\mathcal{H},Γ)$ and an excitation of it with respect to the abovely mentioned unitary element. The generality of the approach, allows us to consider $\mathcal{H}$ as the Hilbert space of solutions of the classic…
We consider the discrete time dynamics of an ensemble of fermionic quantum walkers moving on a finite discrete sample, interacting with a reservoir of infinitely many quantum particles on the one dimensional lattice. The reservoir is given by a fermionic quasifree state, with free discrete dynamics given by the shift, whereas the free dynamics of the non-interacting quantum walkers in the sample is defined by means of a unitary matrix. The reservoir and the sample exchange particles at specific sites by a unitary coupling and we study the discrete dynamics of the coupled system defined by the …
We have explained and comprehensively illustrated in Part I that the generalized Pauli constraints suggest a natural extension of the concept of active spaces. In the present Part II, we provide rigorous derivations of the theorems involved therein. This will offer in particular deeper insights into the underlying mathematical structure and will explain why the saturation of generalized Pauli constraints implies a specific simplified structure of the corresponding many-fermion quantum state. Moreover, we extend the results of Part I to non-fermionic multipartite quantum systems, revealing that…
Within the rigorous axiomatic framework for the description of quantum mechanical systems with a large number of degrees of freedom, we show that the nonequilibrium steady state, constructed in the quasifree fermionic system corresponding to the isotropic XY chain in which a finite sample, coupled to two thermal reservoirs at different temperatures, is exposed to a local external magnetic field, is breaking translation invariance and exhibits a strictly positive entropy production rate. Moreover, we prove that there exists a second-order nonequilibrium quantum phase transition with respect to …
We rigorously analyze the quantum phase transition between a metallic and an insulating phase in (non solvable) interacting spin chains or one dimensional fermionic systems. In particular, we prove the persistence of Luttinger liquid behavior in the presence of an interaction even arbitrarily close to the critical point, where the Fermi velocity vanishes and the two Fermi points coalesce. The analysis is based on two different multiscale analysis; the analysis of the first regime provides gain factors which compensate exactly the small divisors due to the vanishing Fermi velocity.
We present a rigorous derivation of the BCS gap equation for superfluid fermionic gases with point interactions. Our starting point is the BCS energy functional, whose minimizer we investigate in the limit when the range of the interaction potential goes to zero.
Much of our understanding of critical phenomena is based on the notion of Renormalization Group (RG), but the actual determination of its fixed points is usually based on approximations and truncations, and predictions of physical quantities are often of limited accuracy. The RG fixed points can be however given a fully rigorous and non-perturbative characterization, and this is what is presented here in a model of symplectic fermions with a nonlocal ("long-range") kinetic term depending on a parameter $\varepsilon$ and a quartic interaction. We identify the Banach space of interactions, which…
We give a rigorous construction of the Dirac Sea for the fermionic quantization in the non-separable Hilbert spaces. These CAR-representations depend on the Axiom of Choice, hence are not unique, nevertheless they are unitarily equivalent to the classic Fock representation.
We present a rigorous and functorial quantization scheme for linear fermionic and bosonic field theory targeting the topological quantum field theory (TQFT) that is part of the general boundary formulation (GBF). Motivated by geometric quantization, we generalize a previous axiomatic characterization of classical linear bosonic field theory to include the fermionic case. We proceed to describe the quantization scheme, combining a Fock space quantization for state spaces with the Feynman path integral for amplitudes. We show rigorously that the resulting quantum theory satisfies the axioms of t…
Tensor network states, and in particular projected entangled pair states, play an important role in the description of strongly correlated quantum lattice systems. They do not only serve as variational states in numerical simulation methods, but also provide a framework for classifying phases of quantum matter and capture notions of topological order in a stringent and rigorous language. The rapid development in this field for spin models and bosonic systems has not yet been mirrored by an analogous development for fermionic models. In this work, we introduce a framework of tensor networks hav…
It is well known that one can map certain properties of random matrices, fermionic gases, and zeros of the Riemann zeta function to a unique point process on the real line. Here we analytically provide exact generalizations of such a point process in d-dimensional Euclidean space for any d, which are special cases of determinantal processes. In particular, we obtain the n-particle correlation functions for any n, which completely specify the point processes. We also demonstrate that spin-polarized fermionic systems have these same n-particle correlation functions in each dimension. The point p…
