A mobility edge (ME) in energy separating extended from localized states is a central concept in understanding various fundamental phenomena like the metal-insulator transition in disordered systems. In one-dimensional quasiperiodic systems, there exist a few models with exact MEs, and these models are beneficial to provide exact understanding of ME physics. Here we investigate two widely studied models including exact MEs, one with an exponential hopping and one with a special form of incommensurate on-site potential. We analytically prove that the two models are mutually dual, and further give the numerical verification by calculating the inverse participation ratio and Husimi function. The exact MEs of the two models are also obtained by calculating the localization lengths and using the duality relations. Our result may provide insight into realizing and observing exact MEs in both theory and experiment.
We study the localization transitions for coupled one-dimensional lattices with quasiperiodic potential. Besides the localized and extended phases there is an intermediate mixed phase which can be easily explained decoupling the system so as to deal with effective uncoupled Aubry-André chains with different transition points. We clarify, therefore, the origin of such an intermediate phase finding the conditions for getting a uniquely defined mobility edge for such coupled systems. Finally we consider many coupled chains with an energy shift which compose an extension of the Aubry-André model i…
We demonstrate the existence of generalized Aubry-André self-duality in a class of non-Hermitian quasi-periodic lattices with complex potentials. From the self-duality relations, the analytical expression of mobility edges is derived. Compared to Hermitian systems, mobility edges in non-Hermitian ones not only separate localized from extended states, but also indicate the coexistence of complex and real eigenenergies, making it possible a topological characterization of mobility edges. An experimental scheme, based on optical pulse propagation in synthetic photonic mesh lattices, is suggested …
Mobility edge (ME), a critical energy separating localized and extended states in spectrum, is a central concept in understanding the localization physics. However, there are few models with exact MEs. In the paper, we generalize the Aubry-André-Harper model proposed in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 146601 (2015)] and recently realized in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 040603 (2021)], by introducing a relative phase in the quasiperiodic potential. Applying Avila's global theory we analytically compute localization lengths of all single-particle states and determine the exact expression of ME, which both sign…
The nearest-neighbor Aubry-André quasiperiodic localization model is generalized to include power-law translation-invariant hoppings $T_l\propto t/l^a$ or power-law Fourier coefficients $W_m \propto w/m^b$ in the quasi-periodic potential. The Aubry-André duality between $T_l$ and $W_m$ is manifest when the Hamiltonian is written in the real-space basis and in the Fourier basis on a finite ring. The perturbative analysis in the amplitude $t$ of the hoppings yields that the eigenstates remain power-law localized in real space for $a>1$ and are critical for $a_c=1$ where they follow the Strong Mu…
The analysis of level statistics provides a primary method to detect signatures of chaos in the quantum domain. However, for experiments with ion traps and cold atoms, the energy levels are not as easily accessible as the dynamics. In this work, we discuss how properties of the spectrum that are usually associated with chaos can be directly detected from the evolution of the number operator in the one-dimensional, noninteracting Aubry-André model. Both the quantity and the model are studied in experiments with cold atoms. We consider a single-particle and system sizes experimentally reachable.…
Higher-order topological phases of matter have been extensively studied in various areas of physics. While the Aubry-André-Harper model provides a paradigmatic example to study topological phases, it has not been explored whether a generalized Aubry-André-Harper model can exhibit a higher-order topological phenomenon. Here, we construct a two-dimensional higher-order topological insulator with chiral symmetry based on the Aubry-André-Harper model. We find the coexistence of zero-energy and nonzero energy corner-localized modes. The former is protected by the quantized quadrupole moment, while …
The Aubry-Andre model is a one-dimensional lattice model for quasicrystals with localized and delocalized phases. At the localization transition point, the system displays fractal spectrum, which relates to the Hofstadter butterfly. In this work, we uncover the exact self-similarity structures in the energy spectrum. We separate the fractal structures into two parts: the fractal filling positions of gaps and the scaling of gap sizes. We show that the fractal fillings emerge for a certain type of incommensurate periodicity regardless of potential strength. However, the power-law scaling of gap …
We study a generalized Aubry-Andre model that obeys $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry. We observe a robust $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric phase with respect to system size and disorder strength, where all eigenvalues are real despite the Hamiltonian being non-hermitian. This robust $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric phase can support an Anderson localization transition, giving a rich phase diagram as a result of the interplay between disorder and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry. Our model provides a perfect platform to study disorder-driven localization phenomena in a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system.
Off-diagonal Aubry-André (AA) model has recently attracted a great deal of attention as they provide condensed matter realization of topological phases. We numerically study a generalized off-diagonal AA model with p-wave superfluid pairing in the presence of both commensurate and incommensurate hopping modulations. The phase diagram as functions of the modulation strength of incommensurate hopping and the strength of the p-wave pairing is obtained by using the multifractal analysis. We show that with the appearance of the p-wave pairing, the system exhibits mobility-edge phases and critical p…
We study a one-dimensional quasiperiodic system described by the off-diagonal Aubry-André model and investigate its phase diagram by using the symmetry and the multifractal analysis. It was shown in a recent work ({\it Phys. Rev. B} {\bf 93}, 205441 (2016)) that its phase diagram was divided into three regions, dubbed the extended, the topologically-nontrivial localized and the topologically-trivial localized phases, respectively. Out of our expectation, we find an additional region of the extended phase which can be mapped into the original one by a symmetry transformation. More unexpectedly,…
Observing critical phases in lattice models is challenging due to the need to analyze the finite time or size scaling of observables. We study how the computational topology technique of persistent homology can be used to characterize phases of a generalized Aubry-André-Harper model. The persistent entropy and mean squared lifetime of features obtained using persistent homology behave similarly to conventional measures (Shannon entropy and inverse participation ratio) and can distinguish localized, extended, and crticial phases. However, we find that the persistent entropy also clearly disting…
We study the quantum localization phenomena of noninteracting particles in one-dimensional lattices based on tight-binding models with various forms of hopping terms beyond the nearest neighbor, which are generalizations of the famous Aubry-André and noninteracting Anderson model. For the case with deterministic disordered potential induced by a secondary incommensurate lattice (i.e. the Aubry-André model), we identify a class of self dual models, for which the boundary between localized and extended eigenstates are determined analytically by employing a generalized Aubry-André transformation.…
We study a non-Hermitian AA model with long-range hopping, $1/r^a$, and different choices of quasiperiodic parameters $β$ to be a member of the metallic mean family. We find that when the power-law exponent is in the $a<1$ regime, the system displays a delocalized-to-multifractal (DM) edge in its eigenstate spectrum. For the $a>1$ case, a delocalized-to-localized (DL) edge exists, also called the mobility edge. While a striking feature of the Hermitian AA model with long-range hopping is that the fraction of delocalized states can be obtained from a general sequence manifesting a mathematical …
Within the framework of the Aubry-Andre model, one kind of self-dual quasiperiodic lattice, it is known that a sharp transition occurs from \emph{all} eigenstates being extended to \emph{all} being localized. The common perception for this type of quasiperiodic lattice is that the self-duality excludes the appearance of the mobility edge separating localized from extended states. In this work, we propose a multi-chromatic quasiperiodic lattice model retaining the self-duality identical to the Aubry-Andre model, and demonstrate numerically the occurrence of the localization-delocalization trans…
Here we study the phase diagram of the Aubry-Andre-Harper model in the presence of strong interactions as the strength of the quasiperiodic potential is varied. Previous work has established the existence of many-body localized phase at large potential strength; here, we find a rich phase diagram in the delocalized regime characterized by spin transport and unusual correlations. We calculate the non-equilibrium steady states of a boundary-driven strongly interacting Aubry-Andre-Harper model by employing the time-evolving block decimation algorithm on matrix product density operators. From thes…
The Aubry-André-Harper model provides a paradigmatic example of aperiodic order in a one-dimensional lattice displaying a delocalization-localization phase transition at a finite critical value $V_c$ of the quasiperiodic potential amplitude $V$. In terms of dynamical behavior of the system, the phase transition is discontinuous when one measures the quantum diffusion exponent $δ$ of wave packet spreading, with $δ=1$ in the delocalized phase $V<V_c$ (ballistic transport), $δ\simeq 1/2$ at the critical point $V=V_c$ (diffusive transport), and $δ=0$ in the localized phase $V>V_c$ (dynamical local…
We investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics of the one-dimension Aubry-André-Harper model with $p$-wave superconductivity by changing the potential strength with slow and sudden quench. Firstly, we study the slow quench dynamics from localized phase to critical phase by linearly decreasing the potential strength $V$. The localization length is finite and its scaling obeys the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. The results show that the second-order phase transition line shares the same critical exponent $zν$, giving the correlation length $ν=0.997$ and dynamical exponent $z=1.373$, which are different fro…
In this work, we investigate the Anderson localization problems of the generalized Aubry-André model (Ganeshan-Pixley-Das Sarma's model) with an unbounded quasi-periodic potential where the parameter $|α|\geq1$. The Lyapunov exponent $γ(E)$ and the mobility edges $E_c$ are exactly obtained for the unbounded quasi-periodic potential. With the Lyapunov exponent, we find that there exists a critical region in the parameter $λ-E$ plane. The critical region consists of critical states. In comparison with localized and extended states, the fluctuation of spatial extensions of the critical states is …

We study the high temperature transport behavior of the Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) model, both in the isolated thermodynamic limit and in the open system. At the critical point of the AAH model, we find hints of super-diffusive behavior from the scaling of spread of an initially localized wavepacket. On the other hand, when connected to two baths with different chemical potentials at the two ends, we find that the critical point shows clear sub-diffusive scaling of current with system size. We provide an explanation of this by showing that the current scaling with system-size is entirely governe…
We discuss and compare two recently proposed toy models for anomalous transport and Griffiths effects in random systems near the Many-Body Localization transitions: the random dephasing model, which adds thermal inclusions in an Anderson Insulator as local Markovian dephasing channels that heat up the system, and the random Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE) approach which models them in terms of ensembles of random regular graphs. For these two settings we discuss and compare transport and dissipative properties and their statistics. We show that both types of dissipation lead to similar Grif…
We study the Anderson orthogonality catastrophe, and the corresponding x-ray edge problem, in systems that are at a localization transition driven by a deterministic quasiperiodic potential. Specifically, we address how the ground state of the Aubry-Andre model, at its critical point, responds to an instantaneous local quench. At this critical point, both the single-particle wavefunctions and the density of states are fractal. We find, numerically, that the overlap between post-quench and pre-quench wavefunctions, as well as the "core-hole" Green function, evolve in a complex, non-monotonic wa…
Whether disordered and quasiperiodic many-body quantum systems host a long-lived localized phase in the thermodynamic limit has been the subject of intense recent debate. While in one dimension substantial evidence for the existence of such a many-body localized (MBL) phase exists, the behavior in higher dimensions remains an open puzzle. In two-dimensional disordered systems, for instance, it has been argued that rare regions may lead to thermalization of the whole system through a mechanism dubbed the avalanche instability. In quasiperiodic systems, rare regions are altogether absent and the…

We study an extended Aubry-Andr{é}-Harper model with simultaneous modulation of hopping, on-site potential, and $p$-wave superconducting pairing. For the case of commensurate modulation of $β= 1/2$ it is shown that the model hosts four different types of topological states: adiabatic cycles can be defined which pump particles, two types of Majorana fermions, or Cooper pairs. In the incommensurate case we calculate the phase diagram of the model in several regions. We characterize the phases by calculating the mean inverse participation ratio and perform multi-fractal analysis. In addition, we …
We study a one-dimensional quasiperiodic system described by the Aubry-André model in the small wave vector limit and demonstrate the existence of almost mobility edges and critical regions in the system. It is well known that the eigenstates of the Aubry-André model are either extended or localized depending on the strength of incommensurate potential $V$ being less or bigger than a critical value $V_c$, and thus no mobility edge exists. However, it was shown in a recent work that this conclusion does not hold true when the wave vector $α$ of the incommensurate potential is small, and for the…
We introduce and explore a family of self-dual models of single-particle motion in quasiperiodic potentials, with hopping amplitudes that fall off as a power law with exponent $p$. These models are generalizations of the familiar Aubry-Andre model. For large enough $p$, their static properties are similar to those of the Aubry-Andre model, although the low-frequency conductivity in the localized phase is sensitive to $p$. For $p \leq 2.1$ the Aubry-Andre localization transition splits into three transitions; two distinct intermediate regimes with both localized and delocalized states appear ne…
We theoretically study a one-dimensional (1D) mutually incommensurate bichromatic lattice system which has been implemented in ultracold atoms to study quantum localization. It has been universally believed that the tight-binding version of this bichromatic incommensurate system is represented by the well-known Aubry-Andre model. Here we establish that this belief is incorrect and that the Aubry-Andre model description, which applies only in the extreme tight-binding limit of very deep primary lattice potential, generically breaks down near the localization transition due to the unavoidable ap…
We have investigated scaling properties of the Aubry-André model and related one-dimensional quasiperiodic Hamiltonians near their localisation transitions. We find numerically that the scaling of characteristic energies near the ground state, usually captured by a single dynamical exponent, does not obey a power law relation. Instead, the scaling behaviour depends strongly on the correlation length in a manner governed by the continued fraction expansion of the irrational number $β$ describing incommensurability in the system. This dependence is, however, found to be universal between a range…
Sil, Maiti, and Chakrabarti (SMC) (Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 076803 (2008), arXiv:0801.2670) introduce an aperiodic two-leg ladder network composed of atomic sites with on-site potentials distributed according to a quasiperiodic Aubry-Andre potential. SMC claim the existence of multiple mobility edges, i.e. metal-insulator transitions at multiple values of the Fermi energy. SMC use numerical calculations of the conductance and den- sity of states, and an analytical result in a limiting case. In the following, we restate in the real space the change of basis done by SMC. This change of basis reduce…
We investigate localization properties in a two-coupled uniform chains with quasiperiodic modulation on interchain coupling strength. We demonstrate that this ladder is equivalent to a Aubry-Andre (AA) chain when two legs are symmetric. Analytical and numerical results indicate the appearance of mobility edges for asymmetric ladder. We also propose an easily engineered quasiperiodic ladder system which is a moiré superlattice system consisting of two-coupled uniform chains. An irrational lattice constant difference results in quasiperiodic structure. Numerical simulations show that such a syst…

Non-Hermitian effects could create rich dynamical and topological phase structures. In this work, we show that the collaboration between lattice dimerization and non-Hermiticity could generally bring about mobility edges and multiple localization transitions in one-dimensional quasicrystals. Non-Hermitian extensions of the Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) model with staggered onsite potential and dimerized hopping amplitudes are introduced to demonstrate our results. Reentrant localization transitions due to the interplay between quasiperiodic gain/loss and lattice dimerization are found. Quantized wi…
Environment-assisted quantum transport (ENAQT) is a unique situation where environmental noise can, counterintuitively, enhance the transport of an open quantum system. In this paper, we investigate how the presence of a one-dimensional single-particle mobility edge can generate strong ENAQT. For this purpose, we study the energy current of a generalized Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) tight binding model coupled at its edges to spin baths of differing temperature and dephasing noise along the system. We find that the ENAQT increases by orders of magnitude and depends on the number of localized eigen…
We introduce a self-consistent theory of mobility edges in nearest-neighbour tight-binding chains with quasiperiodic potentials. Demarcating boundaries between localised and extended states in the space of system parameters and energy, mobility edges are generic in quasiperiodic systems which lack the energy-independent self-duality of the commonly studied Aubry-André-Harper model. The potentials in such systems are strongly and infinite-range correlated, reflecting their deterministic nature and rendering the problem distinct from that of disordered systems. Importantly, the underlying theore…
We experimentally study many-body localization (MBL) with ultracold atoms in a weak one-dimensional quasiperiodic potential, which in the noninteracting limit exhibits an intermediate phase that is characterized by a mobility edge. We measure the time evolution of an initial charge density wave after a quench and analyze the corresponding relaxation exponents. We find clear signatures of MBL, when the corresponding noninteracting model is deep in the localized phase. We also critically compare and contrast our results with those from a tight-binding Aubry-André model, which does not exhibit a …
