Topological edge modes, which are robust against disorders, have been used to enhance the spatial stability of lasers. Recently, it was revealed that topological lasers can be further stabilized using a novel topological phase in non-Hermitian photonic topological insulators. Here we propose a procedure to realize topologically protected modes extended over a d-dimensional bulk by introducing an imaginary gauge field. This generalizes the idea of zero-energy extended modes in the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice into higher dimensional lattices allowing a d-dimensional bulky mode that is topologically protected. Furthermore, we numerically demonstrate that the topological bulk lasing mode can achieve high temporal stability superior to topological edge mode lasers. In the exemplified topological extended mode in the kagome lattice, we show that large regions of stability exist in its parameter space.
Topological lasers are of growing interest as a way to achieve disorder-robust single mode lasing using arrays of coupled resonators. We study lasing in a two-dimensional coupled resonator lattice exhibiting transitions between trivial and topological phases, which allows us to systematically characterize the lasing modes throughout a topological phase. We show that, unlike conventional topological robustness that requires a sufficiently large bulk band gap, bifurcations in topological edge mode lasing can occur even when the band gap is maximized. We show that linear mode bifurcations from si…
Recently, topologically engineered photonic structures have garnered significant attention as their eigenstates may offer a new insight on photon manipulation and an unconventional route for nanophotonic devices with unprecedented functionalities and robustness. Herein, we present lasing actions at all hierarchical eigenstates that can exist in a topologically designed single two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal (PhC) platform: 2D bulk, one-dimensional edge, and zero-dimensional corner states. In particular, multiple topological eigenstates are generated in a hierarchical manner with no bulk …
Topological lasers are a new class of lasers that seek to exploit the special properties of topological states of light. A typical limiting factor in their performance is the existence of non-topological states with quality factors comparable to the desired topological states. We show theoretically that by distributing uniform gain and loss on two sublattices of a two-dimensional higher-order topological insulator (HOTI) lattice, single-mode lasing based on topological corner states can be sustained over a wide range of pump strengths. This behavior stems from the parity/time-reversal breaking…
In comparison with conventional lasers, topological lasers are more robust and can be immune to disorder or de-fects if lasing occurs in topologically protected states. Previously reported topological lasers were almost exclu-sively based on the first-order photonic topological insulators. Here, we show that lasing can be achieved in the zero-dimensional corner state in a second-order photonic topological insulator, which is based on Kagome wave-guide array with a rhombic configuration. If gain is present in the corner of the structure, where topological corner state resides, stable lasing in …
We predict the existence of non-Hermitian topologically protected end states in a one-dimensional exciton-polariton condensate lattice, where topological transitions are driven by the laser pump pattern. We show that the number of end states can be described by a Chern number and a topological invariant based on the Wilson loop. We find that such transitions arise due to {\it enforced exceptional points} which can be predicted directly from the bulk Bloch wave functions. This allows us to establish a new type of bulk-boundary correspondence for non-Hermitian systems and to compute the phase di…
Topological lasers based on topologically protected edge states offer unique features and enhanced robustness of operation in comparison with conventional lasers, even in the presence of disorder, edge deformation, and localized defects. Here we propose a new class of topological lasers arising from the valley Hall edge states, which does not require external magnetic fields or dynamical modulations of the device parameters. Specifically, topological lasing occurs at domain walls between two honeycomb waveguide arrays with broken spatial inversion symmetry. Two types of valley Hall edge lasing…
Topological edge states exist at the interfaces between two topologically-distinct materials. The presence and number of such modes are deterministically predicted from the bulk-band topologies, known as the bulk-edge correspondence. This principle is highly useful for predictably controlling optical modes in resonators made of photonic crystals (PhCs), leading to the recent demonstrations of micro-scale topological lasers. Meanwhile, zero-dimensional topological trapped states in the nanoscale remained unexplored, despite its importance for enhancing light-matter interactions and for wide app…
We investigate the possibility of bistable lasing in microcavity lasers as opposed to bulk lasers. To that end, the dynamic behavior of a microlaser featuring two coupled, interacting modes is analytically investigated within the framework of a semiclassical laser model, suitable for a wide range of cavity shapes and mode geometries. Closed-form coupled mode equations are obtained for all classes of laser dynamics. We show that bistable operation is possible in all of these classes. In the simplest case (class-A lasers) bistability is shown to result from an interplay between coherent (populat…
We report the first observation of lasing in topological edge states in a 1D Su-Schrieffer-Heeger active array of resonators. We show that in the presence of chiral-time ($\mathcal{CT}$) symmetry, this non-Hermitian topological structure can experience complex phase transitions that alter the emission spectra as well as the ensued mode competition between edge and bulk states. The onset of these phase transitions is found to occur at the boundaries associated with the complex geometric phase- a generalized version of the Berry phase in Hermitian settings. Our experiments and theoretical analys…
Topological lasers have been intensively investigated as a strong candidate for robust single-mode lasers. A typical topological laser employs a single-mode topological edge state, which appears deterministically in a designed topological bandgap and exhibits robustness to disorder. These properties seem to be highly attractive in pursuit of high power lasers capable of single mode operation. In this paper, we theoretically analyze a large-scale single-mode laser based on a topological edge state. We consider a sizable array laser consisting of a few hundreds of site resonators, which support …
We propose a new type of laser resonator based on imaginary "energy-level splitting" (imaginary coupling, or quality factor Q splitting) in a pair of coupled microcavities. A particularly advantageous arrangement involves two microring cavities with different free-spectral ranges (FSRs) in a configuration wherein they are coupled by "far-field" interference in a shared radiation channel. A novel Vernier-like effect for laser resonators is designed where only one longitudinal resonant mode has a lower loss than the small signal gain and can achieve lasing while all other modes are suppressed. T…
We numerically determine the robustness of the lasing edge modes in a spin-torque oscillator array that realizes the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Previous studies found that the linearized dynamics can enter a topological regime in which the edge mode is driven into auto-oscillation, while the bulk dynamics are suppressed. Here we investigate the full non-linear and finite-temperature dynamics, whose understanding is essential for spin-torque oscillators-based applications. Our analysis shows that the lasing edge mode dynamics persist in the non-linear domain for a broad range of …
We investigate the effects of two dimensional confinement on the lasing properties of a classical random laser system operating in the incoherent feedback (diffusive) regime. A suspension of 250nm rutile (TiO2) particles in a Rhodamine 6G solution was inserted into the hollow core of a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) generating the first random fiber laser and a novel quasi-one-dimensional RL geometry. Comparison with similar systems in bulk format shows that the random fiber laser presents an efficiency that is at least two orders of magnitude higher.
GeSn alloys are the most promising semiconductors for light emitters entirely based on group IV elements. Alloys containing more than 8 at.% Sn have fundamental direct band-gaps, similar to conventional III-V semiconductors and thus can be employed for light emitting devices. Here, we report on GeSn microdisk lasers encapsulated with a SiNx stressor layer to produce tensile strain. A 300nm GeSn layer with 5.4 at.% Sn, which is an indirect band-gap semiconductor as-grown with a compressive strain of -0.32 %, is transformed via tensile strain engineering into a truly direct band-gap semiconducto…
Photonic systems with parity-time (PT) symmetry and topology are attracting considerable attentions. In this work, topological near-zero edge states are studied in PT-symmetric photonic lattice and the results indicate that the near-zero edge states can be broken spontaneously in spite of the unbroken PT symmetry. To achieve the stable topological near-zero mode, a binary lattice with carefully designed PT-symmetric is proposed. Further study shows such a structure supports a stable topological interface state experiences phase transition similar to the bulk states in infinite lattice and thus…

The ability to control the chirality of physical devices is of great scientific and technological importance, from investigations of topologically protected edge states in condensed matter systems to wavefront engineering, isolation, and unidirectional communication. When dealing with large networks of oscillators, the control over the chirality of the bulk states becomes significantly more complicated and requires complex apparatus for generating asymmetric coupling or artificial gauge fields. Here we present a new approach for precise control over the chirality of a triangular array of hundr…
We clarify theoretically that the topological ring-cavity (TRC) modes propagating along the interface between two honeycomb-type photonic crystals distinct in topology can be exploited for achieving stable single-mode lasing, with the maximal intensity larger than a whispering-gallery-mode counterpart by order of magnitude. Especially, we show that the TRC modes located at the bulk bandgap center benefit maximally from the gain profile since they are most concentrated and uniform along the ring cavity, and that, inheriting from the Dirac-like dispersion of topological interface states, they ar…
We describe the formation of bulk and edge arcs in the dispersion relation of two-dimensional coupled-resonator arrays that are topologically trivial in the hermitian limit. Each resonator provides two asymmetrically coupled internal modes, as realized in noncircular open geometries, which enables the system to exhibit non-hermitian physics. Neighboring resonators are coupled chirally to induce non-hermitian symmetries. The bulk dispersion displays Fermi arcs connecting spectral singularities known as exceptional points, and can be tuned to display purely real and imaginary branches. At an int…
Topology is central to phenomena that arise in a variety of fields, ranging from quantum field theory to quantum information science to condensed matter physics. Recently, the study of topology has been extended to open systems, leading to a plethora of intriguing effects such as topological lasing, exceptional surfaces, as well as the non-Hermitian bulk-boundary correspondence. Here, we show that resonator networks with dissipative couplings can be governed by matrix-valued modified Wilson lines, leading to non-Abelian effects. This is in contrast to conservative Hamiltonians exhibiting non-d…
Topological materials exhibit edge-localized scattering-free modes protected by their nontrivial bulk topology through the bulk-edge correspondence in Hermitian systems. While topological phenomena have recently been much investigated in non-Hermitian systems with dissipations and injections, the fundamental principle of their edge modes has not fully been established. Here, we reveal that in non-Hermitian systems robust gapless edge modes can ubiquitously appear owing to a mechanism that is distinct from bulk topology, thus indicating the breakdown of the bulk-edge correspondence. The robustn…
We study the one-dimensional nonreciprocal lattices with real nearest neighboring hopping and find that the energy spectra under open boundary conditions can be entirely real or imaginary. We further investigate the spectral properties and the non-Hermitian skin effect in the one-dimensional mosaic lattices with real nonreciprocal hopping introduced at equally spaced sites. The eigenenergies of such lattices undergo a real-complex-imaginary or real-complex transition as the nonreciprocity varies. Moreover, the skin effect exhibits phase transitions depending on the period of the mosaic nonreci…

We demonstrate the first optically pumped sub-300 nm UV laser structures grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on single-crystal bulk AlN. The edge-emitting laser structures fabricated with the AlN/AlGaN heterostructures exhibit multi-mode emission with peak gain at ~284 nm. Having the goal of electrically injected, continuous wave deep-UV AlGaN laser diodes in mind, with its intrinsic material challenges of achieving sufficient optical gain, the optical cavity loss of a laser diode should be minimized. We derive an expression to quantify the effect of mirror imperfections, including…
