Photonic systems with parity-time (PT) symmetry and topology are attracting considerable attentions. In this work, topological near-zero edge states are studied in PT-symmetric photonic lattice and the results indicate that the near-zero edge states can be broken spontaneously in spite of the unbroken PT symmetry. To achieve the stable topological near-zero mode, a binary lattice with carefully designed PT-symmetric is proposed. Further study shows such a structure supports a stable topological interface state experiences phase transition similar to the bulk states in infinite lattice and thus possess real-eigenvalues even with unbroken PT phase. Our study enriches the content of non-Hermitian topological physics and might have potential applications in the fields of topological lasing and quantum computation.
Propagation of the surface waves on the interface between an uniaxial hyperbolic material and an isotopical topological insulator is studied. The cases of the anisotropy axes is normal to interface or one is coplanar to interface are discussed. The dispersion relations are derived and analyzed. The conditions of the existence of the surface waves are established.
In analogous to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, one-dimensional (1D) electromagnetic (EM) crystals can exhibit nontrivial topological properties. In particular, when a nontrivial EM crystal is in contact with its trivial counterpart, a topologically protected interface state is formed. While much attention has been focused on single interface state, multiple interface states can interact collectively when under suitable conditions, giving rise to trivial or nontrivial band topologies resembling to the standard SSH model. Here, we study the topological properties of 1D metallic superlatti…
The existence of topological interface states is investigated at the boundary between a binary photonic crystal and a quaternary photonic crystal, with each possessing inversion symmetric unit cells. Conditions are established that describe where the quaternary crystal can exist in parameter space subject to constraints. The closing of band gaps is discussed for different optical path ratios. When the binary and quaternary crystals share an interface, optical states appear at the interface when the two crystals have different signs for the surface impedance. The evolution of the states is disp…
One-dimensional topological edge modes are usually studied considering the interface between two different semi infinite periodic crystals (PCs) with inverted band structure around the Dirac point. Here we consider the case where the two PCs are finite, constituting an open scattering system, and we study the influence of the size of this finite structure on the interface mode by inspecting the complex resonances. First we show the complex resonance distribution corresponding to the band inversion around the Dirac point. Perturbations from the Dirac point display the emergence of the localized…
The geometric phase and topological property for one-dimensional hybrid plasmonic-photonic crystals consisting of a simple lattice of graphene sheets are investigated systematically. For transverse magnetic waves, both plasmonic and photonic modes exist in the momentum space. The accidental degeneracy point of these two kinds of modes is identified to be a diabolic point accompanied with a topological phase transition. For a closed loop around this degeneracy point, the Berry phase is Pi as a consequence of the discontinuous jump of the geometric Zak phase. The wave impedance is calculated ana…
Effective medium theory is used to model a one dimensional lossy dielectric quaternary photonic crystal as a homogeneous slab. The unit cell of the original crystal is inversion symmetric with layer sequence ACBCA. The behavior of the branch frequency singularities in the effective refractive index is investigated as parameters in the layered structure change. A heterostructure composed of multiple photonic crystals is also modeled with effective medium theory. It is shown that the effective refractive index of such a structure possesses regions of normal dispersion that correspond to localize…
Tremendous efforts have been devoted to the search for exotic topological states, which usually exist at an interface between lattices with differing topological invariants according to the bulk-edge correspondence. Here, we show a new finding of topological states localized at the interface between two gauge-shifted Floquet photonic lattices, despite the same topological order across the entire structure. The quasienergy band structures reveal that these new interface modes belong to the Floquet π modes, which are further found to enable a robust one-way propagation thanks to the flexible con…
The past decade has witnessed a booming development of topological photonics, which revolutionizes the methodology for controlling the behavior of light. A gigantic achievement is to engineer robust confined modes localized at interfaces between topologically distinct regions, where the optical context can trigger exotic topological phenomena exclusive to photons. Here, we provide an experimentally flexible approach to engineering topologically induced interface states in the visible regime via a unique design of complex superlattice formed by connecting two component superlattices of distingu…
We experimentally observe a coexisting pair of topological anomalous Floquet interface states in a (1+1)-dimensional Discrete Photon Walk. We explicitly verify the robustness of these states against local static perturbations respecting chiral symmetry of the system, as well as their vulnerability against non-stationary perturbations. The walk is implemented based on pulses propagating in a pair of coupled fibre loops of dissimilar lengths with dynamically variable mutual coupling. The topological interface is created via phase modulation in one of the loops, which allows for an anomalous Floq…
We propose a one-dimensional nonlinear system of coupled anharmonic oscillators that dynamically undergoes a topological transition switching from the {disordered} and topologically trivial phase into the nontrivial one due to the spontaneous symmetry breaking. The topological transition is accompanied by the formation of the topological interface state in the spectrum of linearized excitations of the stationary phase. Our findings thus highlight the potential of the nonlinear systems for hosting the topological phases and uncover a fundamental link between the spontaneous symmetry breaking me…
We address linear and nonlinear topological interface states in polariton condensates excited at the interface of the honeycomb and Lieb arrays of microcavity pillars in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting in the external magnetic field. Such interface states appear only in total energy gaps of the composite structure when parameters of the honeycomb and Lieb arrays are selected such that some topological gaps in the spectrum of one of the arrays overlap with topological or nontopological gaps in the spectrum of the other array. This is in contrast to conventional edge sta…
In Hermitian systems, according to the bulk-edge correspondence interfacing two topological optical media with different bulk topological numbers implies the existence of edge states, which can trap light at the interface. However, such a general scenario can be violated when dealing with non-Hermitian systems. Here we show that interfacing two semi-infinite Hatano-Nelson chains with different bulk topological numbers can result in the existence of infinitely many edge (interface) states, however light waves cannot be rather generally trapped at the interface.
Topological notions in physics have become a powerful perspective that leads to the discoveries of topological interface states (TISs). In this work, we present a scheme to achieve negative refraction by leveraging the properties of TISs in a valley photonic crystal (VPC). Due to the chiral characteristics, one type of the TISs deterministically possesses negative dispersion relation, which can cause an obliquely incident wave to undergo a negative lateral shift. By stacking multiple VPC interfaces, the TIS-induced lateral shifts can relay in the transmitted wave towards the far side of incide…
The advance of topological photonics has heralded a revolution for manipulating light as well as for the development of novel photonic devices such as topological insulator lasers. Here, we demonstrate topological lasing of circular polarization in a polymer-cholesteric liquid crystal (P-CLC) superlattice, tunable in the visible wavelength regime. By use of the femtosecond-laser direct-writing and self-assembling techniques, we establish the P-CLC superlattice with a controlled mini-band structure and a topological interface defect, thereby achieving a low threshold for robust topological lasi…
Nonlinear topological photonics has been attracting increasing research interest, as it provides an exciting photonic platform that combines the advantages of active all-optical control offered by nonlinear optics with the unique features of topological photonic systems, such as topologically-protected defect-immune light propagation. In this paper, we demonstrate that topological interface modes and trivial edge modes of a specially designed graphene metasurface can be coupled in a tunable and optically controllable manner, thus providing an efficient approach to transfer optical power to top…
On-chip chiral quantum light-matter interfaces, which support directional interactions, provide a promising platform for efficient spin-photon coupling, non-reciprocal photonic elements, and quantum logic architectures. We present full-wave three-dimensional calculations to quantify the performance of conventional and topological photonic crystal waveguides as chiral emitter-photon interfaces. Specifically, the ability of these structures to support and enhance directional interactions while suppressing subsequent backscattering losses is quantified. Broken symmetry waveguides, such as the non…
The application of topology in optics has led to a new paradigm in developing photonic devices with robust properties against disorder. Although significant progress on topological phenomena has been achieved in the classical domain, the realization of strong light-matter coupling in the quantum domain remains unexplored. We demonstrate a strong interface between single quantum emitters and topological photonic states. Our approach creates robust counter-propagating edge states at the boundary of two distinct topological photonic crystals. We demonstrate the chiral emission of a quantum emitte…
Polaritons in polar biaxial crystals with extreme anisotropy offer a promising route to manipulate nanoscale light-matter interactions. The dynamical modulation of their dispersion is great significance for future integrated nano-optics but remains challenging. Here, we report a momentum-directed strategy, a coupling between the modes with extra momentum supported by the interface and in-plane hyperbolic polaritons, to tailor topological transitions of anisotropic polaritons in biaxial crystals. We experimentally demonstrate such tailored polaritons at the interface of heterostructures between…
We consider periodically modulated Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with gain and loss. This model, which can be realized with current technology in photonics using waveguides, allows us to study Floquet topological insulating phase. By using Floquet theory, we find the quasi-energy spectrum of this one dimensional PT symmetric topological insulator. We show that stable Floquet topological phase exists in our model provided that oscillation frequency is large and the non-Hermitian degree is below than a critical value.
We investigate laser emission at the interface of a topological and trivial phases with loss and gain. The system is described by a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with site-dependent hopping parameters. We study numerically and analytically the interface states. The ground state is described by the Jackiw-Rebbi mode with a pure imaginary energy, reflecting the non-Hermiticity of the system. It is strictly localized only at the A sites. We also find a series of analytic solutions of excited states based on SUSY quantum mechanics, where the A and B sites of the bipartite lattice form SUSY partners. …
The recent realization of topological phases in insulators and superconductors has advanced the quest for robust quantum technologies. The prospects to implement the underlying topological features controllably has given incentive to explore optical platforms for analogous realizations. Here we realize a topologically induced defect state in a chain of dielectric microwave resonators and show that the functionality of the system can be enhanced by supplementing topological protection with non-hermitian symmetries that do not have an electronic counterpart. We draw on a characteristic topologic…
A driven-dissipative nonlinear photonic system (e.g. exciton-polaritons) can operate in a gapped superfluid regime. We theoretically demonstrate that the reflection of a linear wave on this superfluid is an analogue of the Andreev reflection of an electron on a superconductor. A normal region surrounded by two superfluids is found to host Andreev-like bound states. These bound states form topological synthetic bands versus the phase difference between the two superfluids. Changing the width of the normal region allows to invert the band topology and to create "interface" states. Instead of dem…
Topological photonic interfaces support topologically non-trivial optical modes with helical character. When combined with an embedded quantum emitter that has a circularly polarised transition dipole moment, a chiral quantum optical interface is formed due to spin-momentum locking. Here, we experimentally realise such an interface by integrating semiconductor quantum dots into a valley-Hall topological photonic crystal waveguide. We harness the robust waveguide transport to create a ring resonator which supports helical modes. Chiral coupling of quantum dot transitions, with directional contr…
